David Kehne As we come to the end of another school year, we celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2015. They have proven themselves committed to the “Lancer Legacy” in many ways. The last weeks of the year are busy with many state and national tests but also many celebratory activities. Senior Salute will be on June 1 at 7 pm in the auditorium. The following morning, June 2, we will have our undergraduate awards ceremony, starting at 9:10 am in the main gym. Graduation, admission with ticket only, will be held on June 2 at 7 pm at Mt. St. Mary’s University. Our PTSA is again sponsoring a Safe and Sane event for all graduating seniors, which will be held all night following the graduation. It is not too late for students to sign-up to attend Safe and Sane. For more information, contact Co-Chairs Melissa and Chip Harner at harner_lhs_safeandsane@verizon.net. Finally, we expect to transition to an electronic newsletter starting this coming fall. This will allow us to make our newsletter more timely and include a greater variety of school news. We plan to publish our newsletter via Find Out First. Parents who’ve not signed up for Find Out First or who want to update their preferences to receive LHS news specific to their child’s grade level or interests should do so by accessing Find Out First at www.fcps.org. While cumulative grade point averages, both weighted and unweighted, are calculated using final course grades, it is important for students and parents to remember that eligibility to participate in fall activities is determined by term 4 grades. Students must have at least a 2.0 term 4 GPA with no failing term grades. Term 4 report cards are to be mailed on Friday, June 26. Students are advanced to the next grade level by earning credits. Students must have at least 6 credits to be sophomores, at least 12 credits to be juniors, and at least 18 credits to be seniors. Seniors will complete the Senior Survey between May 18 and 22. As part of the survey, seniors will request their final transcripts to be sent to the college of their choice and to report scholarships offered by community organizations and colleges. Juniors should start the college search process this summer. Juniors and their parents should consider visiting college campuses this summer, possibly as part of vacation plans. Frederick County Public Schools has implemented the Naviance College and Career Readiness Curriculum which provides a platform for the college application process. Members of the Class of 2016 will be the first students to be introduced to the Naviance e-documents system when school begins in August to assist them with the college application process. Frederick County Public Schools will run summer school programs with the following options: Traditional (TRAD) High School Summer Session • Audience: TRAD is designed for students who benefit from a structured learning environment. Merit level, core content courses are offered. • Duration: Tuesday, June 23 – Wednesday, July 29 (6 weeks; no Friday classes) • Dates and Times: Mondays-Thursdays from 8 AM-Noon (No class Monday, June 22) • Location: Governor Thomas Johnson MIDDLE (large parking lot left side entrance) Partially Online Summer School (POSS) • Audience: POSS is designed for independent, self-motivated learners. POSS offers online honors courses and electives. • Duration: Tuesday, June 23 -Thursday, July 30 (6 weeks long; no Friday classes) • Dates and Times: Each class meets 1 day/week as assigned from 9-11:30 AM. Different courses meet on different days; please check the website for specific class meetings. • Location: Governor Thomas Johnson MIDDLE (front door entrance) Site-Based Summer Session (SBSS) • Audience: SBSS is designed for students who benefit from a structured learning environment and need to recover core content area credits required for graduation. Courses are taught at the merit level. Only limited course offerings will be available. Students and parents should contact a school counselor to discuss options. • Duration: Monday, June 22 – Thursday, July 30 (6 weeks; no Friday classes) • Dates and Times: Mondays-Thursdays from 8:30 – 11:30 AM Please see program details at https://education.fcps.org/flex/summer2015. The cost of all summer school classes is $200 per course. Students and parents are encouraged to meet with their school counselor before June 10th to discuss summer school course options. Students must be registered in courses by June 12th and must pay for courses on-line by June 18th. Students and parents are reminded that during the summer, a school counselor is at Lingnaore from 7:30 am until 2:30 pm each day, Monday through Thursday, except for the week of June 29 to July 3 when the student system is being updated. During the summer, please call 240-566-9730 to contact the counselor on duty for that day. Student schedules for the 2015-2016 school-year will be mailed on Thursday, July 30th. Students are welcome to visit school once schedules are received in order to walk their schedule and orient themselves to the building. In conjunction with Frederick Community College, Linganore will be offering the dual enrollment courses of English 101 and Psychology 101 next year. Students must show college readiness through SAT or ACT test scores or passing the Accuplacer exam given by FCC. Members of the Class of 2016 should discuss this option with their school counselor if interested. 3 Are you a parent, community leader, or FCPS staff member who has an interest in working collaboratively to support needs attributed to students with disabilities? The Frederick County Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee (SECAC) needs you! Who is SECAC? SECAC is an active group of Frederick County citizens committed to evaluating local special education services and advising the FCPS Office of Special Education and Psychological Services, as well as the Frederick County Board of Education on ways to improve the performance and achievement of children with disabilities. Lee Standifer • 240-566-9700 Linganore High School 4 Memorial Day As Memorial Day approaches, it is time to pause and consider the true meaning of this holiday. Memorial Day represents one day of national awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died while defending our Nation and its values. While we should honor these heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made to secure our Nation’s freedom, we should honor them especially on Memorial Day. The LHS Performing Arts Department has lots of things going on in May, and we encourage everyone to mark your calendars for the following events. • Saturday, May 16 – Maryland State Solo and Ensemble Festival. • Monday, May 18 – Spring Chorus Concert, 7:00 pm, LHS Theater. • Friday, May 22 – Spring Dance Showcase, 7:00 pm, LHS Theater. On Wednesday, May 20, Linganore will host the James Miltenberger Jazz Quartet in concert at 7:00 pm in our theater. Dr. Miltenberger is a Grammy-nominated pianist who has been teaching at West Virginia University for over 50 years. In addition to Dr. Miltenberger on piano, the group features Dr. Scott Green on bass guitar, renowned saxophonist Curtis Johnson, and LHS teacher Kevin Lloyd on drums. This summer, the group will perform a three-week concert tour of Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and The Netherlands. Early marching band rehearsals begin in mid-May. Juniors Polite and Prepared During Interviews Juniors developed a resume and cover letter in English class this semester and learned the importance of preparing for an interview. On April 16, juniors were interviewed by local business representatives. Donna Dorman from Dorman Home Remodeling in Mt. Airy said, “I would absolutely hire every student I interviewed today”. Bill Butts with Retirement Solutions described the juniors as “impressive and passionate about possible future careers”. Juniors expressed appreciation for the opportunity to interview. Megan Durbin is currently looking for a summer job. She said she received valuable tips for making her resume even stronger and advice on finding a good job. Seniors who pre-ordered will receive their yearbooks at the Senior Picnic, on Friday, May 15, during 4th block. There will be a supply of yearbooks available to purchase for $70 at that time, CASH ONLY. Any seniors not at the picnic can see Mrs. Bozzonetti in room A206 any day AFTER the 14th, either before or after school, to pick up their yearbook or to purchase one. Underclassman will receive their yearbooks on May 22 during their lunch shifts. Please bring your receipt. If we have any extras, they will be available on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE basis right after school on JUNE 3 in room A206. For students needing to catch a bus, a RESERVE TICKET will be issued and the student can stop by before school the next day to pay and get the yearbook. Please be sure to order the 2016 yearbook early during Back to School Night so you don’t miss out!! Attention Parents of Juniors: Mark your calendars for Senior Picture Days from June 9, 10 & 11, to be held in the LHS Auditorium. As usual, we are requiring all students to use our school photographer, Herff Jones Victor O’Neill Photography, for their portrait that will appear in next year’s yearbook. This way we will be able to produce the senior section in color and all portraits will look consistent and of the highest quality. So, it is very important that your student makes their scheduled sitting date. There will only be two make-up days in September. Victor O’Neill will be mailing you directly with your sitting date and time. The fee for the traditional sitting will be $10 which will include your yearbook pose and 2 casual poses. You are then welcome to purchase additional poses and portrait packages from Victor O’Neill for an additional fee. You are also welcome to use an outside photographer for your senior portrait packages for family and friends, just bear in mind you will not be able to use that picture in the yearbook. Please call them directly with additional questions at 1-800-320-2894. Also don’t forget to start thinking about a Baby Ad for their Senior Year. Look for an order form in the mail.
