The Esperanza Azteca National Symphony Orchestra finished up the year with a
gala concert in early December at Mexico City’s National Auditorium. The performance also paid homage to the 2012 London Paralympic Games medal-winners.
Grupo Salinas chairman Ricardo Salinas presented the outstanding sportsmen and
women with the Esperanza Azteca Medal in recognition of their effort and achievements. “I believe that one of the contributions a citizen can make is undoubtedly to
be an example, and you have been examples of striving Mexicans, great athletes,
and exceptional human beings.” After this, the children and young people of the

Two hundred forty-five children representing Esperanza Azteca orchestras and
choirs from all over the country moved us with their talent.
This ambitious program, which offers an unparalleled opportunity for development, is made up of 54 orchestras in 29 states, a total of 12,000 youth. Our goal
is to make it grow even more in the coming years.
In this issue, we also detail Ricardo Salinas’ participation in the Mexico Business
Summit and the presentation of the Caminos de la Libertad “A Life for Freedom”
Prize, awarded to Mikhail Gorbachev, ex-president of the former Soviet Union.
We will also tell you about Italika’s participation in Expo Moto, in addition to an
interesting agreement by Totalmovie to widen its entertainment offering, among
other topics.
We wish you our best for this 2012 and everything that is to come.

Excellence in the Use of Resources
Grupo Salinas Receives National Prize
for Energy Savings
For the second occasion, Grupo Salinas was recognized for its energy saving
measures, this time by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the Trust
for Energy Savings (FIDE). It was awarded first place for the National Prize for
Electrical Energy Savings in the category of Commercial Companies and Large
Service Providers.
Energy savings came to 14% of its electricity consumption, but the most important
thing was having maintained that savings over the last four years. In quantitative
terms, the energy savings came to 135,000MWh.
How did we do it?
What do these savings represent?
• We changed more than 40,000
lamps to LED technology and
other low-consumption
options.
• We replaced more than 850
air-conditioning units.
• We installed a remote management system for energy
consumption, with more than
560 advanced remote
monitoring systems in Mexico
and Latin America.
• We improved monitoring of
electricity contracts and
verification of billing with the
CFE through different
follow-up systems.
• We improved and broadened
the “Seal of Energy” guidelines document as a catalog of
products validated as
efficient and with appropriate
guarantees.

Meeting on Global Topics
Ricardo Salinas Speaks at the Business
Summit about the Role of the Entrepreneur
At the Mexico Business Summit held in the city of Querétaro, Ricardo B. Salinas
participated in the final session in a dialogue with former White House advisor
and economist Todd Buchholz. Mr. Salinas shared his vision of business and the
obstacles that regulations pose.
The Mexico Business Summit, a forum organized by
Miguel Alemán and Claude Smadja, brings together the
most outstanding figures in public life, the private sector, and civic organizations to share experiences, ideas,
and points of view about global issues that impact our
country’s development.
“Small companies are the
ones most affected
by excessive regulation.”
Ricardo B. Salinas
This year, the conference was attended by then PresidentElect Enrique Peña Nieto; Álvaro Uribe, the former president of Colombia; Carlos
Mesa Gisbert, former president of Bolivia; Laura Chinchilla, President of Costa
Rica; and other distinguished global business and political leaders.
Ricardo Salinas participated in the panel “Being Successful in a Changing World,”
where he dialogued with Todd Buchholz, author of the book Rush, and Claude
Smadja. Mr. Salinas mentioned that excessive regulations and a series of unnecessary taxes are obstacles to job creation by companies, but that, above all, small
businesses are the ones most affected by these kinds of policies.

When he took the floor, Gorbachev expressed his thanks for

is very sweet, but the road is bitter. However, I think that as
long as my heart beats and I have clarity of mind, I have to
act, I have to continue what we started.”
“A Life for Freedom” is given in the framework of the awards

outstanding figures who have defended and fought for freedom. Past recipients are Felipe González, former president

Teams Make a Good
Showing
The Grupo Salinas soccer squads, Monarcas Morelia, Jaguares de Chiapas, and Neza FC, played outstanding matches in
their respective tournaments in the second half of the year.
Monarcas Morelia once again made the playoffs, better
known as the “Liguilla,” by finishing in fifth place during the
regular season. The team credits its success to consistency,
commitment, and high performance.
Monarcas Morelia seeks another championship
Since the 2008 Opening Tourney, Monarcas has never scored
less than 22 points per tournament, and over the last four
years it has ended up in the finals, the semi-finals, and two
quarter finals.
Jaguares de Chiapas placed tenth, leaving it out of the Liguilla. However, the team never gave up in attempts to qualify.
Jaguares has gone through a complete transformation since
joining Grupo Salinas, turning into a winning team, reaching
the playoffs in two of the last four tourneys.
During the Opening 2012 season, Neza FC placed second
during the regular season of the feeder league, making it
to the quarter finals for the fourth time in a row. This is a
reflection of its solid teamwork and shows the evenness
that characterizes the squad. They also had the league’s
leading scorer, Rodrigo Prieto. At the MX Cup, they made
the semifinals, after defeating Pachuca in the quarter finals.

Winning Audience Preferences
Azteca America Audience
Grows in November
Azteca America reported strong gains in its prime-time ratings in November,
bolstered by broadcasts of MX Soccer League Liguilla matches.
Audience share grew 14% from last year in the same month among 18-34-yearolds and 13 percent among 25-54-year-olds.
Thanks in large part to the Liguilla broadcasts, male viewers increased 20%
for men between 18 and 49 and between 25 and 54.
La Isla reality show broadcasts also raised audience participation 35% in the
8-9 p.m. time slot among 18-to-34-year-olds.
Ratings among women between 18 and 49 rose 17% with the program Al
Extremo in the 9 p.m. time slot.
Azteca America Sports a New Image
As part of its new campaign, Azteca America proudly presented its new image, with the slogan “Tu Casa.”
“The new image is very modern, reflecting the way we see our audience and how we want to be interpreted: looking
forward into the future. The design and colors evoke our audience’s diversity and programming,” said Azteca America
CEO Martin Breidsprecher.
The slogan “Tu Casa” awakens strong emotional ties with the Hispanic audience and welcomes its customs and culture.
Azteca America is continuing to grow and evolve, spurred by innovation and creativity, but deeply rooted in Hispanic
values and heritage.

Mexico’s Leading Motorcycle Brand
Italika Featured at Expo Moto 2012
Italika, Mexico’s leading motorcycle brand, participated once
again in Expo Moto, one of the country’s most important
motorcycle exhibitions.
This year, like the two previous ones, Italika was the event’s
main sponsor and had an attention-grabbing stand.
Italika presented 10 new chopper, sportsbike, scooter, and
all-terrain vehicle models. Some of the models on display
already have the brand’s new LED lighting technology, which
improves visibility for riders with a cutting-edge look.
Italika also took advantage of the event to offer special promotional deals.
“La Casa del Box”
Explosive Márquez-Pacquiao Boxing Bout
Once again, Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Márquez and Manny Pacquiao showed off
their talent in a fourth bout chock full of thrills and intense exchanges of blows
and a knockout, viewed by millions on Azteca 7.
“Dinamita” Márquez KO’d Manny Pacquiao in the sixth round in front of 16,348
fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
This fourth fight settled any lingering doubts when Juan Manuel Márquez landed
a jab that dropped Pacman to the canvas. This was the first time in 12 years that
Manny had been knocked out.
Box Azteca was at the big fight with the best broadcast and coverage and the
best pre-fight, in-fight, and post-fight analysis and commentary.

Advance America Initiative
“You Might Be Surprised”
Attracts Almost a Million Visitors
To educate consumers about their credit choices and to illustrate how
different types of credit can meet varied needs, Advance America
partnered with the Community Financial Education Foundation on a
multi-media initiative called “You Might Be Surprised” (YMBS). Since
its launch in the spring of 2011, nearly one million people have obtained valuable personal finance information and resources through
the project, which includes advertising and an interactive website,
YouMightbeSurpised.com.
YMBS provides information about an array of credit options, including
payday advances, but also home equity loans, title or auto equity
loans, bank loans, pawn lawns, credit cards, 401(k) loans and overdraft
protection. The website features financial literacy tools and budget
tips, including an online quiz to help consumers identify their best
credit option based on their individual needs.
Nearly 10,000 people have completed the quiz since the campaign’s
launch last year, and the website has attracted more than 830,000
visitors. It has a series of quality questionnaires and can be accessed
on Twitter.
As a leading provider of consumer financial services in the United
States, Advance America believes that consumers should have all the
facts about their credit options so that they are empowered to make
sound short- and long-term financial decisions. While YMBS does not
focus exclusively on services offered by Advance America – in fact,
of the site’s visitors, 75 percent had never used Advance America’s
services – it does feature several customers’ compelling personal
stories. They share their own financial challenges and describe why
they turned to the company for help.
These testimonials illustrate the critical role short-term credit plays in
consumers’ lives, providing a perspective that is often overlooked in
media coverage and legislative debates. They appear on the YMBS
website and in promotional materials associated with the campaign,
including online, radio and TV ads, as well as in two-minute YouTube
videos.

Introduced at the 2012
International Book Fair
Guadalajara’s International Book Fair was the site for the launch of the book Emprendedores sociales, lo que todos necesitan saber (Social Entrepreneurship: What
Everyone Needs to Know), by David Bornstein and Susan Davis, with a prologue
by Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego.
The launch was hosted by Mr. Salinas, with the participation of David Bornstein
and Armando Laborde, the director of the Ashoka México foundation.

Borstein and Davis also write about the learn-learn model through working with
communities to deal with very specific problems, but above all to show readers
how to get involved.
Author David Borstein
“In times of crisis like today, we need to test ideas to keep alive

The Best of Ricardo
Salinas’ Blog
Investing in Our Youth
Experience, common sense, and even economists have demonstrated that the
most profitable social investment is the health and education of children. For
me, the most tangible sign of the failure of a society is a sick, malnourished, or
illiterate child. Even sadder is to see a child without hope.
During the recent gala concert of the Esperanza Azteca National Youth Orchestra we were witness to the power of music for transforming lives and filling our
hearts with hope. It’s been five years since we launched our first orchestra, I have
seen many children fill with hope and joy at the prospect of transforming their
futures.
The Future Belongs to Latin America
At a recent dialogue in Washington D.C., I said that the future belongs to
Latin Americans, and that the United States can actively participate in our
progress or just be one more outside observer, as it apparently has been in
recent years. I think it’s very important for inhabitants of the region, especially Mexicans, to actively push back against the strong conservative attacks
against Latin America. In the face of groups that seek to close borders to
immigration and trade, we need to talk about the vast opportunities in our
region.
