Ricardo Salinas Presides Over
Graduation Ceremony
at Plantel Azteca
Ricardo Salinas presided over the ceremony for the 610 students from the 14th graduating
class of Plantel Azteca’s middle school, and the 155 students from its 11th graduating
high school class.
Over the last 16 years, Plantel Azteca has awarded thousands of scholarships for low-income
youth. Over 8,000 students have graduated with academic excellence.
“It’s not the same going to school as having an education; they’re two very different things.
And what we’re seeing here, the explanation of ideas, the participation in teams: that’s
education,” said Ricardo Salinas during his talk.

Letter to Readers
With the arrival of summer, yet another school year is coming to a close. It’s time to
recognize advancement, and at Grupo Salinas, we celebrate the graduation of this year’s
high school and middle school classes from the Plantel Azteca School. Our chairman,
Ricardo Salinas, made some stirring remarks to the graduates, highlighting the level of
excellence of the thousands of students who have graduated from our school.
La entrevista con Sarmiento also celebrated its 16th anniversary, consolidating itself as
a “crucial space for dialogue and freedom” in Mexican television.
In this issue, we present a review of some new shows at Azteca and the exclusive launch
of an advanced model of cellular telephony.
Getting in touch with future leaders is another essential issue for us —and not only in our
own country— as shown by the lectures that Advance America executives offered business
administration students at the University of South Carolina, which we feature in this issue.
We invite you to get to know more about our activities and, as always, we thank you for
your interest in Grupo Salinas.

16th Anniversary
La entrevista con Sarmiento,
Another Year
of Ethical Journalism
In June we celebrated the 16th anniversary of La entrevista con Sarmiento,
one of Azteca 13’s emblematic programs. The celebration highlightedthe
career of journalist, writer, and president of Caminos de la Libertad, Sergio
Sarmiento, who has hosted around 2,500 broadcasts.
At the event were Ricardo Salinas Pliego; Mexico City Mayor Miguel
Ángel Mancera; and Dr. Yoloxóchitl Bustamante Díez, the director of the
National Polytechnic Institute, among other well-known figures from
Mexican political, cultural, and business spheres.
Miguel Ángel Mancera, Ricardo Salinas,
and Sergio Sarmiento
Ricardo Salinas said that La entrevista is
“a crucial space for dialogue and freedom,”
classifying it as “the dean of opinion
programs on Mexican television.”
In his 16 years on the air, Sergio
Sarmiento has interviewed figures like
Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa, and
Mikhail Gorbachev, among many others.

Iusacell made an exclusive launch for the Mexican market of the world’s slimmest smartphone,
the Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra HD.
The new cellular phone, one of the most sophisticated on the market, has three distinguishing qualities: design, price, and functionality. It was also a sensation at one of the world’s
most important technology events, the Consumer Electronics Show 2013, because of its
dimensions: it’s only 6.45 mm thick.
The Alcatel Idol has a Dual Core 1.2 GHZ processor and an Android Jellybean operating
system, a 4.7-inch screen, an 8-megapixel camera, an ergonomic cover that makes it lighter,
and a special fingerprint-resistant film.
As always, Iusacell offers the best plans for purchasing your new cellphone.

Patrick O’Shaughnessy shares his vision of leadership
Advance America recently held a breakfast conference at the University of South Carolina’s
Upstate College of Business and Economics. Distinguished company executives like Advance
America’s CEO Patrick O’Shaughnessy and CFO Jim Ovenden participated in a series of
one-on-one meetings and group sessions with business administration students to offer
advice based on their experience in the field.
Each executive spoke to their area of expertise, tackling student questions on marketing,
finance and accounting, operations management and human resources. In addition, the
team shared recommendations for acing an interview, preparing a strong resume, dressing
for success, and tips for securing a job and beginning a career.
“The Advance America management team truly welcomes the opportunity to speak with
and mentor the next generation of business leaders,” said O’Shaughnessy. “Each one of us
benefitted from having exceptional role models throughout our own careers.”

Culmination of a Series of Forums
Azteca America Organizes
Conference on Immigration
in Chicago
Antonio Olivo, Xóchitl Bada,
Tamar Jacoby, Jaime
Domínguez, and Carolina TapiaRuano discuss the implications
of immigration reform
Azteca America has successfully concluded a series of forums on immigration with a conference in Chicago. The event, organized jointly with Fundación Azteca America and Zocalo
Public Square, boasted an outstanding panel of experts who discussed the topic “What
Does Immigration Reform Mean for Chicago?”
The panel was moderated by Antonio Olivo, an urban and immigration affairs reporter for
the Chicago Tribune. He shared the podium with immigration attorney Carolina TapiaRuano; Jaime Domínguez, an expert in political science from Northwestern University;
Xóchitl Bada, a sociologist from the University of Illinois at Chicago; and Tamar Jacoby,
the president of ImmigrationWorks USA.
Chicago is home
to more than 1.4 million
immigrants
The discussion dealt with different facets of the issue,
but the most important conclusion was that Chicago
is ready for the approval of an immigration reform at
any time. According to the experts, the city has the
capability of dealing with all the paperwork involved
in legalizing the status of migrants now residing there
and in integrating them and giving them jobs.
Tamar Jacoby summed up the discussion about the need for immigration very simply:
“This law is bringing the legislation up to date to jibe with the reality of the United States.”

Let’s Support Immigration Reform
Mexico and the United States are much
more than just neighbors. We are partners. And the progress of one translates
into wellbeing for the other. Let’s consider,
for example, the following from a recent
Woodrow Wilson Center study: (1) Mexico
is the second most important destination
for exports from the United States; (2) our
bilateral trade totals more than US$400
billion in goods and services; and (3) six
million jobs in the United States depend
on trade with Mexico.
However, many xenophobic politicians still miss the point. They will fade away, but Mexico
and the United States will continue to strengthen their ties of friendship and trade because
a prosperous region is in the interest of us all. Today there is an issue on the table that only
the United States can resolve, but will nonetheless affect our relationship for decades to
come: immigration reform. We should support it because the future of millions of people
on both sides of the border depends on it.
