AzA Gazette The Azteca America Newsletter 2 Changes February has been an important month for programming changes, with a new lineup for primetime. We have introduced several new exclusive formats and we won’t stop until we have the right product balance. Buenas Noches América brings the familiar face and light humor of Fernando Arau to many viewers and is building a strong following. At the same time our pre-prime programming is more solid than ever. We still have a few adjustments to make, but we’re confident that we’ll be heading into our 2012-2013 upfront season with our strongest lineup ever. On the local front, we profile in this issue two new programming efforts, Entre Nos, which runs on the Azteca Stations Group in the mornings, and an uplifting concept for Azteca Oregon. Our Station Spotlight is focused on KEMO 50 in San Francisco. We’re also welcoming to the fold KAKZ in Palm Springs. As a final note, we’ll be in New York for upfronts on May 14.We’ll maintain our successful infront strategy of customized presentations that allow for enriching dialog especially regarding product integration and multi-platform solutions. But we’ll be kicking things off with a party at the Top of the Standard. Thanks for your interest, Martin Breidsprecher CEO Watch & Win Campaign Supports Buenas Noches América Launch Azteca America’s marketing team launched a multi-platform “watch & win” campaign entitled “Gana $1,000 diarios con Buenas Noches América” (Win $1,000 daily with Buenas Noches América) to support the Feb. 6 premiere of the namesake program. The promotions included a three-week crescendo of print, radio, social media and on-screen ads primarily in Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver and Phoenix. Viewers throughout the entire network were invited to participate with on-screen promos. Participants sent by SMS a special code word that appeared on the screen during the first two weeks of the show and winners were selected in random drawings. An accumulated total of about 100,000 text messages were received. Winners were geographically diverse, representing: Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver and Phoenix, among other markets. The promotion was also an opportunity to enrich the network’s social media fan club. AzA Gazette 3 The Azteca America Newsletter Liga Azteca FLM Soccer Update The 2012 “clausura” season of FLM soccer is off and running, as the passion for the world’s most popular sport continues. Seven weeks into the season, Azteca America’s Liga Azteca teams are fairing well. Morelia, Cruz Azul and Tijuana are all fighting for the top spots of the overall standings. Morelia was in second place at the time of publishing, with only one loss and important victories against Chivas de Guadalajara and Santos de Torreon, two teams that started the season as favorites to win it all. The Xolos de Tijuana, who were struggling at the start of the season to avoid being sent back to the minor league, are now just two points out of first place. Cruz Azul was the only team that was still undefeated, three points behind the overall league leader. In the coming weeks we’ll know if Cruz Azul has what it takes to contend for the championship when they play against Pumas and Morelia, two teams that have been made strong showings in recent playoff series. A little further down the standings, is Puebla, who continues to stave off a fall back to the minors, and Jaguares, who despite very high levels of play, has not met expectations with final scores. Nevertheless, as chips fall more in their favor, we expect them become playoff contenders. Don’t miss all the excitement and adrenaline of top soccer games in la Liga Azteca, Fútbol Mexicano only on Azteca America, Tu Canal Mexicano!! Azteca America Stations Present the Morning Show Entre Nos The morning magazine show Entre Nos has made its debut. Produced in Los Angeles, the program hosted by Patricia Arbulu is broadcast at 10 am in Los Angeles, New York and Miami / 9 am in Chicago. Entre Nos is an informative, controversial, educational, but most importantly entertaining program that touches on an array of topics of social concern, seeking advice and solutions that help the Latino community. The goal of the program is to increase awareness and help those who are most in need of information to improve their lives. AzA Gazette The Azteca America Newsletter 6 Station Spotlight Azteca 50, KEMO, San Francisco Mark Paretchan, GM KEMO, Channel 50, San Francisco became part of the Azteca America network last year when it was purchased by Una Vez Mas, our largest affiliate group. For Terry Crosby, Chairman and CEO of Una Vez Mas, the acquisition marks a homecoming of sorts. The call letters were chosen to honor Terry’s father, Leon Crosby, who owned the original KEMO-TV in the 1970’s, which was the very first Spanishlanguage television station in San Francisco. In perhaps an even more unusual turn of events, Mark Paretchan, who as teenager used to work at the original KEMO sweeping the studio floors, is now back as its General Manager. Mark, a Bay Area native, has been part of the Azteca America family since 2003. KEMO-TV represents another upgrade to the Azteca America network, replacing a leased sub-channel in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now as a UVM owned and operated station, KEMO will be pushing operations to a new level of service. “We now have even more incentive to make lasting upgrades that will benefit both viewers and clients,” says Mark. On the air since October 2011, Azteca 50 is kicking into high gear. As a full-power station, Azteca has prime channel position on Comcast (channel 31), and mirrors its over-the-air position on DISH and DirecTV. It soon will be added to AT&T U-verse line-up as well. Mark says the coming months will include intensive grass roots promotions that will include street teams, billboard and bus ads, radio and participation in local events such as county fairs, local soccer leagues, and Mexican celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, Día de Muertos and Virgin of Guadalupe celebrations. “Our local clients are excited about the new station, that continues to air Azteca’s popular programming with enhanced coverage,” adds Mark. Aside from local news, anchored by the highlyregarded television journalist Juan Barragán, who also appears on the hit Azteca America network program Al Extremo, Mark and his team are also developing several communitybased entertainment and public service programs to better serve viewers. All the best to Mark and his growing crew!!! The exposition, entitled “Viaje al patrimonio arquitectónico de México. La mirada de Peabody, Kahlo y Vázquez” is on display at the Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT) and was organized by Fomento Cultural Grupo Salinas with the support of Mexico’s National Council of the Arts and Culture, CONACULTA. The exposition features a collection held by Azteca Chairman Ricardo Salinas Pliego and brings together work by Guillermo Kahlo (1842-1941) and the American photographer Henry Greenwood Peabody (1855-1951). The work is part of commission that was made to commemorate the Mexican Centennial of Independence (1910), and includes mirror images taken by the contemporary Mexican photographer Rodrigo Vázquez. KAKZ Signs on in Palm Springs A warm welcome to Eric Grunfeld and his team at KAKZ, Channel 4, the newest Azteca America affiliate in Palm Springs. Although the total population of the Coachella Valley is a modest 350,000, about 50% are of Hispanic descent. KAKZ looks to soon develop a local news broadcast, as well as local programming to cover the Indio Date Festival, Tamale Festival and other important community events. “Our community needs more local programming in Spanish and Azteca America is widely known for its great programming, especially its sports programming,” said Eric AzA Gazette The Azteca America Newsletter 8 Grupo Elektra to Acquire Advance America Azteca America’s sister company Grupo Elektra is preparing for entry into the U.S. financial services market. The purchase of Advance America, a short term lender present in 29 states throughout the country, would be the first foothold in the United States for Grupo Elektra. The proposed transaction is worth about $780 million, and includes all outstanding stock plus the payment of company debt. The deal is subject to regulatory approval. “We are eager to expand our services to the United States and to continue meeting the needs of the financially underserved,” said Ricardo Salinas.
