Welcome to AZA’s and BBG’s second annual East Coast Kallah weekend!
As we work to put the final touches on our Order’s second ‘ECK’, we remain blown
away at how quickly this new experience has evolved into one of the largest and most
popular program opportunities offered each year worldwide. When we learned of the
idea for this ‘experimental weekend’ last year, there’s no way that our predecessors
would have known that this ‘dream’ they threw around late one night at Perlman Camp
a couple summers ago would ultimately grow into the mega-interregional Kallah that
we love today.
This year we expanded the reach of ECK to include twice as many regions and more
than 200 additional spots. We’ve also taken a big step forward in strengthening our
global relationships and proudly have delegations from Bulgaria, Israel and Argentina
with us this weekend. The interest in this convention has been unprecedented, and the
demand beyond capacity. We’re inspired by all of you: the 630 teens that wanted to
spend a weekend together learning about Judaism, building our Movement and our
responsibility to impact the world that we’ll lead sooner than we realize.
When we selected the theme for this weekend, “Call Them Not Your Children, Call Them
Your Builders” - an empowering line from the Talmud - we felt it fit because we wanted
to build upon the momentum our Orders, the Aleph Zadik Aleph and B’nai B’rith Girls,
are currently championing. With the establishment of our teen-initiated and teen-led
campaigns ‘Stand Up for Those in Need’, the launch of ‘Speak Up for Israel’ and our
newest effort ‘Stand Up for Each Other’, we wanted to build a convention that affirmed
for our networks that we’re a Movement built upon millenia of proud tradition with truly
limitless potential for making a difference in the lives of others and the world around us.
For the next 3 days, we will be 630 teens from across the Mid-Atlantic coming together
with peers from around the world to celebrate Jewish traditions, explore important issues,
and further our commitment to building one global Jewish teen community, all the while
having an amazing time, reuniting with ‘summer programs friends’, and building new
relationships too. While we know our actions this weekend won’t singularly solve global
crises or raise enough funds to support every initiative, we embrace the lessons of Pirkei
Avot: “It is not your responsibility to finish the work [of perfecting the world], but you are
not free to desist from it either.”
We hope you have a great weekend as we assume the reigns of being our community’s
and generation’s next leaders, while having a ton of fun.
