Mayor’s Message
I anticipated that 2013 would be a busy
year and now that we are almost half way
through we are seeing many of Council’s
projects coming to life.
The new playground has opened in
Burwood Park and is now an exciting and
adventurous recreational space for
children of all ages and their families. The
upgrades were part of a quarter of a
million dollar program to rejuvenate
playgrounds including St Pauls Close and
Keith Smith Park.
Work has commenced on the Woodstock
Community Hall and the development
application for the Burwood Library and
Community Hub has been approved by
the Joint Regional Planning Panel. In
addition, a proposal was recently
approved for a multipurpose stage in
Burwood Park to cater for events and
community groups.
Wangal Park is moving ahead with the
Draft Plan of Management and Masterplan
on public exhibition and construction of
the park’s access and service lines
underway. Detailed designs of the
wetlands and the greater park are also
being prepared.
Coinciding with these major projects is
our regular capital works program to
maintain community roads and footpaths.
It’s an exciting time for the community
and Council with a busy schedule of
innovative projects to cement our
community’s position as the hub of the
Inner West.

A glimpse into Burwood’s future
Modern designs complementing
existing architecture is what the
artist’s impressions of the new
Burwood Library and Community
Hub illustrate.
The library will be enhanced with
state-of-the-art facilities to cater
for the community. The features of
the historic building will be
sustained and will greatly contribute
to the library’s role in providing and
preserving the cultural history and
heritage associated with Burwood.
A breath of new life will also be
injected into Burwood’s iconic
Woodstock Community Centre.
Construction has commenced on a
new community hall that will adjoin
the historic centre.
Council has allocated $1.6 million to
the project, which will feature a
new hall subdivided into two areas,
a small coffee shop, and a lift to
make the upper levels of the
building more accessible. The hall
will cater for a variety of activities
including theatre performances,
dance
and
music
recitals,
educational activities, expos and
functions.

I am determined to keep our community a
safe place to live, work and visit. That is
why I have concerns over the property on
the corner of Burwood Road and Duff
Street. A wired temporary fence surrounds
the derelict site and may not comply with
our current policy. I have asked Council to
investigate options to be taken and
whether we are able to serve an order to
ensure the safety of people passing by. If

Council is pleased to report that
over 63 per cent of residents were
very satisfied or satisfied, and an
additional 30 per cent somewhat
satisfied.
Only 5 per cent were not satisfied
and 1 per cent not at all satisfied.
While this is a pleasing result there
is always room for improvement. In
particular, in light of the results of
the survey, Council will continue to
concentrate on the following

Earlier this year Council undertook
a Residents Satisfaction Survey to
seek the community’s feedback on
39 different services Council
provides ranging from traffic, roads
and footpaths to cleanliness,
graffiti removal, communications,
and youth and senior services.
The survey was conducted by
independent
firm
Micromex
Research and was done over the
phone with 500 randomly selected
residents. The survey was then
followed by two focus groups with
24 residents, at which a number of
specific issues were explored and

These objectives are included in
Council’s long term strategic plans,
such as the Community Strategic
Plan, which form the blueprint of all
activities Council will undertake in
the next four to ten years.

survey and the focus groups.
New playground
equipment in full swing
Three community playgrounds have been
transformed into more exciting, adventurous and
user-friendly spaces.
More than a quarter of a million dollars was spent
on renovating and installing new play equipment at
Burwood Park, St Pauls Close and Keith Smith Park.
Some of the new play equipment includes: double
swing sets, track rides and slides, all designed for
children aged two to twelve.

Graffiti not tolerated
Graffiti makes the community look unsightly and
can also impose costs on local businesses, individuals
and Council.
Burwood Council has a dedicated graffiti removal
team that removes tags as soon as possible. To
report incidences of graffiti residents should call
Council on 9911 9911.
Burwood Council takes a tough stance on graffiti
Residents are also encouraged to report the crime
to the Police Assistance Line (PAL) 131 444 or Crime
Stoppers 1800 333 000.

Mosaic masterpieces
Iconic war memorial
turns ninety
Unveiling of the war memorial arch 1923
One of Burwood’s most recognisable
landmarks, the Burwood Memorial
Arch, has turned ninety this year.

All the pieces have come together for Council’s Community Mosaic,
recently unveiled at the Enfield Aquatic Centre.
The colourful and intricately designed mosaics, celebrating International
Women’s Day and Neighbour Day, were developed over a series of
community workshops bringing together the diversity of the Burwood
community.
Featured in countless photos, the arch
was unveiled by the Governor
General, Lord Forster, on Anzac Day
1923 in recognition of the men and
women from the area who enlisted to
serve in World War I.
Since its unveiling in Burwood Park in
1923, the arch has become a symbol
for all Australians who have paid the
ultimate price for this nation.

Pool open for winter
Even as the weather is
getting
cooler,
the
Enfield Aquatic Centre is
open for community use.
The heated indoor pool
will be operating as usual
and there will be a busy
schedule of activities
over the winter months
with
learn-to-swim
classes,
aqua-fitness
classes and swim squad
training. Access will be
via the Portland Street
entry.

New rules for pools
A reminder that all pool owners are required to register their pool on a
new state-wide online register from the end of April and must have
completed registration by 29 October 2013.

Fridges end to end from Burwood to Grafton
If all the 43,000 fridges the
program has collected were
placed end to end it would
cover 650kms, which is about
the distance from Burwood to
Grafton. In Burwood, 219
people have had their fridges
collected saving residents
$65,000 on their power bills
each year.
Fridge Buyback is a residential
energy savings program to
help save the environment and
reduce power bills by collecting
old fridges and upright
freezers.
A $35 rebate is paid with free
collection from homes with six
steps or less. The fridges or
upright freezers must be in
regular use, built before 1996
and 200 litres or greater in size.

Recycle your old mobile
phone at Burwood Council
Simply bring in old mobile phones
and accessories and place them in
the Mobile Muster Box located in
Customer Services at Council
Chambers.
MobileMuster aims to keep old
mobile phones, batteries, chargers
and accessories out of landfill by
recycling them in a safe, secure
and ethical way. This free recycling
service is a not for profit program,

onset of spring with a festival for
over a quarter of a century. The
festival has blossomed over the
years to become the biggest
community event in the Inner West
with stalls, rides, entertainment,
roving performances, model boats
and an animal farm.
