Matt... Dear Parish Family, Periodically we get small opportunities to gesture ourselves and tip our hats to very special people. This weekend, we take joy in that kind of opportunity with you, our mothers. One of my favorite poets, T.S. Elliot, wrote about you. This one expresses my own personal affection: “Now that lilacs are in bloom She has a bowl of lilacs in her room And twists one in her fingers while she talks. ‘Ah, my friend, you do not know, you do not know What life is, you who hold it in your hands.” I can only echo in a much lesser way what maybe some of you already experience with your own sons and daughters, but I join them in greeting you, mothers, with the vibrant joy of our Creator. And in a special way, I am also writing this for you, mom, to thank you for giving me life and for putting pride in the name that you gave me 32 years ago. You, mothers, are the first love of boys and the last of husbands – the prime of creation, the pinnacle of the first six days from which launched the flow of our human existence. If no one has ever said it to you, thank you. Thank you for being woman, for being the source of joy in our homes and the glue of every society in the world. Thank you for picking us up if ever our families were left alone by the loss of fathers and in your singularity acted as parents and baked brownies and brewed beers to mark a balance. But thank you also, fathers, who took on the torch of sacred motherhood and raised us up with whatever maternal strength you had hidden within you. And if no one has ever said it to you, I’m sorry. I’m sorry if, for whatever reason, you never received the love that you, mothers, deserved or the adoration that belonged to you who are the most sacred space on earth and whose feminine genius and lineage once housed the Son of God in the womb of Mary. If no one has ever said it to you, We love you. We love you for your smiles and your tears, which were always a gift to us and perhaps to your husbands who don’t always find it so easy to carve and shed their own. We, your children, love you for feeding us with your own body when we were being formed in your womb, for travelling the far reaches of the globe to find us and adopt us as your own, for feeding us with your own food when we were seated with you at table, and most especially for feeding us with the Bread of Life when you knew that there existed a love greater than anything this world could ever give. It all comes down to you, moms – without you, the loveliness of creation cannot continue and the meaning of beauty itself would decay. You are the chosen vehicle of the most maternal side of the affection of the God who loves this world. You do what men, even with all their sciences, will never be able to replicate – you are the bearers of life and the joy of families. You are the completion of the creation of mankind and even God would not have found a way into this world without the willingness, the love, and the affection of Mary, the New Eve. God doesn’t always choose the easiest roads, but as you’re probably aware, the labor of life seems to trace through the most difficult and painful situations. It is in the impossible and the painful, afterall, that life finds its home, since true life and freedom and love, when defined by other analogies, can only be summarized by the sacrifices we make. And you, mothers, hold the dearest sacrifice of all, since you bear the cross of life in your very wombs, wherefrom we step out into this world as a precursor to our future resurrection into eternal life. And in that garden of paradise, you will stand as Easter lilies surrounding many empty tombs signifying the lives you helped birth into heaven. ‘Ah, my friend, you do not know, You do not know What life is, You who hold it in your hands.” For this, and so much more, we tip our hats to you. Happy Mothers Day, Fr. Matthew Shane Page 4 SECOND COLLECTION FOR TUITION ASSISTANCE OUR STEWARDSHIP Year Actual Year Prior Next weekend, May 14-15, $ 22,210 $ 1,808 $ 24,018 4/26/15 $ 22,731 $ 2,647 $ 25,378 there will be a second collection for the St. Theresa School Tuition Assistance Fund. 4/24/16 Basket Online Total 5/1/16 Basket Online Total 5/3/15 $ 22,171 $ 2,434 $ 24,605 $ 19,835 Pending This collection will fund Tuition Assistance for school families for the entire 2016-2017 school year. Her priests I will clothe with salvation and her saints will shout for joy. Psalm 132:16 A pearl of wisdom from Fr. Dennis Stafford’s book “A Courageous Leap of Faith”: …conversion is not necessarily radical behavior change but the opening of the soul to embrace a new imagination, an imagination that avoids the pitfalls of selfishness and embraces the broader aspect that we dare not do this alone. Share this thought with friend and stranger: (Mary) stood before the Cross and gazed tenderly on the wounds of her Son, because she was waiting, not for her Son’s death, but for the salvation of the world. St. Ambrose Enjoy learning the basics of a ‘new’ evangelization with Fr. Stafford’s book, A Courageous Leap of Faith - Becoming A Disciple of Jesus in the New Evangelization Available at www.Amazon.com The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at 2:45pm, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois.
