Discussion of ‘Ordinary Grace’ by William
Kent Krueger, facilitated by CASTLE Instructor
Ric Jacobsen. It is a story about tragedy,
grief, and grace in small-town New Bremen,
Minnesota, in the summer of 1961. Books are
available to checkout at the Library OR can

Depression was an unparalleled period
of economic collapse, social upheaval,
and change in American history. It also
marked the rise of radio, film, and mass
market paperbacks. Learn about the
period through iconic images, songs, and
words that captured the angst of a nation.
Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m.,
Sept 4 & 11, 18 & 25 at the NU
Community Center, lower level,
600 N German. Learn about all things
watercolor with lecture and hands-on
painting lessons from one of New Ulm’s
foremost artists and CASTLE member,
Ruth Lindemann. There will be a $10
per person charge for supplies.
Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m.,
October 2 – 23 at the New Ulm
Community Center, lower level. This
will be the first of several CASTLE
culture courses .The fall World Culture
sessions will include two classes
about Scandinavian Life, the history,
literature, art, and philosophies of the
Scandinavian peoples; from the Viking
Age to modern day, led by Professor
Emeritus Roger McKnight. The
next two classes on Spanish Life will
explore it’s roots in Roman, Arab &
Jewish culture to modern influences,
led by educator and CASTLE member
Kathleen Sullivan.
The Great Depression Through Pop
Culture and the Media. Monday
afternoons at 2:00 p.m., Sept 9 - 30,
at the New Ulm Community Center,

Ulm. Led by Ben Leonard. The Great
Cooking Whole
Heart Gourmet
will be October 22, 29, Nov 12 & 19
at 6:30 p.m. at the NUHS Home
Ec. Room. During these evening
sessions, Chef Mimi Hendel will
instruct and prepare several gourmet
dishes, demonstrate bread-baking and
create display fruits & vegetables for a
unique buffet presentation. Be ready to
cook with Mimi for this course, thanks
to a Healthy Activity grant from Allina
Health.

Led by Ric Jacobsen. If you’re like most of us, you don’t know what you don’t know about quirky British humor and it’s time you
find out! You’ll be the hit of any party with your newfound familiarity with British comedies. Come and have some fun
while we watch about 40 minutes of British television humour at each session. You’d be surprised how many people will
be singularly impressed with your knowledge.
New Ulm Murder Tour
To top off this wide-range of
educational selections, we will hold the ‘New Ulm Murder Tour’, on September 10
at 2:00 p.m. at Turner Hall. Public evidence will be covered on several unsolved and
solved murders and we will tour a few of the sites. We make no promises to keep the
‘creepy’ level reasonable.
Musilm Journeys Special Events
The New Ulm Public
Library, in partnership with CASTLE, received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities
and the American Library Association to host a five-part reading and discussion series titled “Let’s Talk
About It: Muslim Journeys.” Brett Wilson, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Macalester College,
is the project scholar and will facilitate the program.The first discussion on Oct 17 at 6 pm will explore
“In the Country of Men” by Hisham Matar.

Ben Leonard
Ben Leonard received a BA in History from the University of
Minnesota – Morris and an MA in History from Arizona State
University. Ben has been the Executive Director of the Nicollet
County Historical Society since 2004. Prior to that he spent 4 ½
years working for the Minnesota Historical Society. He resides in
St. Peter, MN with his wife four children, two dogs, and he’s pretty
sure he still has a cat.
Michael Plocher
Mike Plocher currently teaches at St. Paul’s Lutheran School
in New Ulm, MN, focusing, on science, math, and technology
applications. He has done graduate work in the area of
meteorology and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in
Educational Technology. He enjoys weather watching and over the
years has had some of his images and videos of severe weather
and tornadoes broadcast on local news stations.
Roger McKnight
Roger McKnight is an emeritus professor of Scandinavian
Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College with a Ph.D. in
Scandinavian Studies from the University of Minnesota,. He
is the author of several books including Watonwan County,
Minnesota: Past, Present, and Future. He teaches Swedish language
and culture; interests in 19th- and 20th-century Scandinavia.
Ruth Lindemann
Ruth Lindemann has taught pottery, ceramics, painting and drawing
in New Ulm. Before marrying and moving to New Ulm, Ruth was
originally from Boston, Massachusetts. Her art work can be seen on
display at various exhibits in New Ulm.
Kathleen Sullivan
Kathleen Sullivan, M.S. has taught students in Minnesota for many
years. She received her Master’s Degree in Linguistics . Her hobbies
and interests include foreign languages, particularly Spanish and French
as well as the performing arts. Recently, she has become a volunteer
instructor for the safe driving courses.
Richard Jacobsen
Ric Jacobsen will instruct the British Comedies class. Besides enjoying
good humor and getting to know new people, he is the pastor at
Oakwood Methodist Church. Ric was senior pastor of the Union
Church of Rio de Janeiro, and became a pastor to missionaries and
Area Director for mission outreaches in Mexico and the Caribbean.
He is author of The Spirit of Tocayo: Ancient Insights for a New Age.
Mary A. Hendel
Mary ‘Mimi’ Hendel catered professionally in downtown San Francisco
for five years. In1992 she moved to Kodiak, Alaska where she and her
husband opened a restaurant and catering business. In 1998 they moved
to New Ulm and Mimi managed 20th Street Grill for six years. She
taught Continuing Education Adult cooking classes in 2007. Currently,
she manages the Auxiliary Coffee Shop at the New Ulm Medical Center.
