Dear Members
Be Different and BETTER
“SMART” Fitness will make you feel better, has quicker and more long
lasting results, and it’s far less boring!
The best way ensure weight loss is to create a daily caloric deficit by
burning calories through Smart exercise and cutting calories. Over
the course of a week, you may cut
250 calories per day by switching
from mayonnaise to mustard on
your sandwich and snacking on
Light & Fit Yogurt instead of Fruiton-the-Bottom types. (Check the
sugar content of these so called
“diet foods”). You can burn an extra
250 calories a day by walking for an
hour throughout the day, or a halfhour jog.
Losing weight isn't as easy as it
sounds on those TV commercials!
Don’t try to lose more than a pound
or two each week. Don’t eat fewer
than 1,200 calories per day. Low-calorie diets will deprive your body
of nutrients, and, may actually slow down your metabolism, making
it much tougher to keep the weight off, as your metabolism slows
down. Genetics also plays a role in weight loss. BUT, everyone can
be a leaner version of themselves by developing and maintaining
SMART exercise and eating habits. Here are some SMART guidelines
for weight loss:
How often you need to do cardio for weight loss: You probably
need five workouts a week. I always recommend trying to be active
every day. Life does get in the way, but, planning for daily exercise,
ensures 5-6 days for most of us.
• How long your workouts should last for weight loss: Here’s
another dose of reality: You should aim for 45 minutes of
exercise, a mix of cardio and strength training six days per
week. You don’t need to do all this at once, but for the pounds to
come off, the calories you burn need to add up. Weight lifting will
challenge your muscles and ensures that you lose the FAT not the
lean tight muscle.
• How hard you need to push for weight loss: You may have heard
that exercising at a slow pace is more effective for weight loss than
working out more intensely. During low-intensity aerobic exercise,
your body does use fat as its primary fuel source. However, picking
up the pace allows you to burn more total calories, as well as more
fat calories. As you get more fit, try to
vary the pace in the same workout.
For example 15 minutes EASY, 15
minutes MODERATE (barely huff
and puff ), and 15 minutes of HIGH
INTENSITY effort. You can build up to
this, and no one can “sprint” for 15
minutes, but the idea is that the High
Intensity portion should be difficult
relative to YOUR ability. If you stick
with it, your ability will get better
and better with time!
Are you ready to make permanent
positive changes in your daily
exercise and eating plan?
This always works, and the results are lasting!
That’s the plan . . .I have seen this work on MANY members. Try it,
and report back!

Q. Why are cell phones prohibited in the locker rooms and not on the
fitness floor?
A. On the fitness floor we do not prohibit cell phones, but, we ask
members to be courteous to other members by keeping conversations brief and as quiet as
possible. We reserve the right to ask a member to move to a more private area if he or she is
disturbing other members. In the locker rooms, the issue is not the phone itself but the camera.
Today’s smart phones have cameras and internet access, and the potential for privacy issues is
obvious. Even if a member is only texting or answering email, other members may be made
uncomfortable by an internet enabled camera being used in the locker room. We ask your
cooperation, therefore, in not using your cell phone in the locker room.
Also, so that all members may enjoy their experience, please silence your cell phone in your locker
or during classes.
Q. Why do I have to swipe my membership card at the front desk? All the front desk people
know me.
A. To protect the value of your membership we want to limit access to the Club to active
members and their guests. Also, for everyone’s security we think it is important that we know
who is in the Club at all times. For these reasons we ask members to swipe in at the front
desk and to register their authorized guests with the front desk staff. Membership cards are, of
course, non-transferable.
Our front desk staff takes pride in knowing many members names, but with the number of
members and OAC staff working various shifts, it is impossible to be 100%. We’ll keep trying, but
we appreciate your cooperation in bringing your card.
Congratulations
May: We are
collecting nonperishable food items to assist local, lowincome families receiving assistance through
food banks.
June: Please help us collect back-to-school
supplies and new/gently used backpacks for
400-500 local, low-income students. Families
may be experiencing financial hardship/
poverty and desperately need backpacks,
pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, glue, folders,
scissors, and notebooks for the upcoming
school year.
Oxford cares is our monthly program
to support worthy organizations in our
community. With the dedication and support
of our members and employees, we have
assisted 130 different organizations since the
program’s inception. Oxford Cares has been
regionally recognized for our community
enhancement. For more information on

Ask the Therapist
Q. I have had significant heel and Achilles tendon pain for over a year.
My doctored gave me cortisone shots to help calm down the pain. He also
recommended that I see a physical therapist. What type of treatments
would you incorporate to help relieve my pain?
A. Thanks for your question! Allegheny Chesapeake Physical Therapy is
making an exciting new therapy option available at our Wexford office:
Astym® treatment. Astym® treatments target scarring and degeneration
in soft tissues like muscles, tendons, and ligaments, without needles or
other invasive techniques. While you are getting Astym® treatments, you
are encouraged to continue your daily routine and exercise programs.
During therapy, a certified Astym® clinician uses specialized tools, applied
with gentle to moderate pressure along the problematic muscle, joint,
or tendon; this locates areas of unhealthy tissue and encourages healthy
tissue growth to replace it. Then it is time for your part: your therapist will

Is Pilates for Men?
Answer: YES
Pilates practice is one of the longest lasting forms of exercise and is still
growing and adapting through 100 years. Pilates founder, Joseph Pilates,
used this vehicle to train male/female elite athletes.
Though men have always been part of the Pilates scene, its popularity
in recent years has been mostly women participants and instructors.
This has led to the impression that the Pilates method is more suited to
women. When Joseph Pilates moved from Germany to New York, he was
popularized by the attendance of ballerinas.
Fortunately, this trend is being broken, and is now being seen as a
form of exercise and rehabilitation for all. Pilates is still one of the
fastest growing fitness trends in the world, and men should take
advantage of Pilates many benefits.
Why Pilates Works Well for Men
Core strength, flexibility, balance, and efficient movement patterns - all
are hallmarks of Pilates training and highly relevant to men’s fitness. The
integrative component of Pilates can be especially beneficial for men,
whose workouts often emphasize a part-by-part approach to muscular
development, such as in weightlifting.
Pilates emphasizes moving from the center of the body, the powerhouse,
and developing core strength in the deep muscles of the center to
stabilize the trunk and protect the back. This kind of core training
makes Pilates an excellent technique for whole-body fitness, as well as
a foundation for cross-training with other kinds of sports and exercise.
Increasing flexibility is a goal that Pilates addresses in a way that men
often feel comfortable with Pilates works toward “functional” fitness. That
is, the ability to have the strength, balance, and flexibility that allows one
to move through daily-life tasks with grace and ease. It helps relate the
member to daily use and sport specific movements.
Welcome to

Tips for Men Who Are New to Pilates
One might find that women outnumber
men in a Pilates class by quite a bit. Most
men take Personal Pilates Training first to get
acquainted to the apparatus before taking a
group class.
There is nothing different about Pilates
training for men, especially in the beginning. The Pilates method is
the same for all. Developed on a man's body, and taught with input
from both men and women, Pilates is founded on healthy movement
principles for the human body. It concentrates on working the body
from the inside out. Men might find that their muscles are a little tighter
than women’s, especially in the hips and hamstrings, but exercises can be
easily modified to allow those areas to stretch out gradually.
All of our OAC Pilates instructors are well educated and aware of what
modifications are needed. If an injury is present or healing, the instructor
must be aware of the situation and will modify accordingly.
We require each member to take four one hour personal Pilates sessions
with a trainer before staring a regimen of classes. Once the four sessions
are completed, the trainer
will then guide you to an
appropriate class. Packages
are available for Personal
Pilates
Training
and
Group Equipment Classes.

You’ve always been able to feel the power of our Spinning program…now
you can see it!
We continue to bring our members the best in the fitness industry. The
newest addition to our Spinning Program is no exception. We are pleased
to announce the purchase of Spinner® Blade ION bikes, which will set
us apart from all other facilities in the area that feature indoor cycling
programs. OAC is the first Spinning facility in the region to offer this
equipment.
Special features:
• Watts computer, which allows users to
monitor their power output as well as heart rate,
cadence, and time with a workout summary
after every ride.
• Backlit display features simple controls and
large easy-to-read characters that let you focus
on your ride.
•New fore-aft adjustability for the
handlebars adds even more adjustment
level to accommodate riders of every size
and ability.
• Powerful heavy duty chain drive system
delivers an authentic riding feel.
In recent years, increasing numbers of cyclists, triathletes, and runners
have enhanced their training regimens by measuring power output
to attain personal fitness or competitive
achievement goals. With new technology now
available for the Spinner® bike, we can apply
the same sophisticated training methods to
the Spinning program. The power meter is
the latest tool in a program that continues
to blend the physical and mental benefits of
cycling with the accessibility and camaraderie
of group exercise.

On April 14, 2014, “I Lost It At The Club” participants were invited
to attend an awards banquet where the winners of the inaugural
Oxford Train –were announced. Over 180 members took part in the
Body Composition Competition and approximately 80 members
participated in the Best Effort Competition that began on January
11, 2014.
Participants were paired up with OAC fitness professionals as a
“coach” throughout the 12-week program, for fitness advice or
follow-up measurements. A bi-weekly “Lose Letter” was distributed
offering fitness advice, nutrition tips, recipes, and exercises to help
bolster everyone’s chance for success.
For the Best Effort Competition, tracking cards were provided every
week for members to take to fitness classes and programs so they
could accrue points. Members could join both competitions, if
desired.
Oxford Train program concept is unparalleled in the area and just
one of the many reasons why our club is in the top tier of private
fitness clubs in the country! It was our pleasure to show you the
value of working with fitness and nutrition professionals to achieve
your goals.
If you missed the train this year, you will have a chance to “get on
board” when it arrives at the station again in 2015!
In addition, Maggie Stilly, RD, LDN, offered a Nutrition Open House
to review their diets or food items they consumed during the
program to be sure they were “staying on track”.

MASSAGE BENEFITS:
Studies have found that massage really does work to ease those sore muscles after a tough
workout. Just a 10-minute massage can reduce inflammation, which can help your body recover.
However, the health benefits of touch extend beyond simply soothing aches and pains. Of
course, the stressed-out have been proponents of this anxiety-busting procedure for decades.
But a growing body of research suggests that a massage is even better for you than you think.
Here are some surprising health benefits of massage.
MANAGE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION
For the same reasons that a massage is relaxing, it can also soothe anxiety and depression.
Massage reduces levels of the stress hormone
“cortisol,” resulting in lifted spirits and often

EASE PAIN
According to a 2011 study, massage helped
people in pain feel and function better compared to people who didn’t receive any massage
treatment. Massage has also been linked to
decreased stiffness and pain, as well as better
range of motion in people with osteoarthritis.

L
ift your spirits with an Endoscopic Brow Lift
Our eyes are a communication tool—truly the windows to our soul. Our
eyes are what people focus on when we converse or socialize. The younger
our eyes look, the better we present . Our appearance is important to us
because it affects the way we think about ourselves and react toward
others. It can also influence the way others perceive us. When aging causes
the eyelids to droop, it can make us seem like we are angry, upset or even
tired. Often with age, we feel our facial features do not reflect our youthful
spirit and energy level. Our patients are looking for ways to refresh their
appearance. The endoscopic brow lift, also known as the forehead lift, can
help the eyes become more open, thus enhancing our looks. It restores the
healthy, happy expression of our youth.
There is usually a three step approach to the aging face. Depending on age,
genetics, and the specific areas that need attention, facial rejuvenation can
be done in phases. The three steps are medical injections, laser treatment
and surgery, or any combination of the three.
Why have Brow Lift surgery? This type of surgery repositions
a low or sagging brow, and will raise the eyebrows to a more
alert and youthful position It will also minimize the crease that
develops across the forehead, or those that occur high on the
bridge of the nose, commonly referred to as frown lines.
When deciding whether or not a patient is a good candidate
for brow lift surgery, the entire face is evaluated rather than
just facial zones. The hallmark of a youthful face is the smooth
transition from zone to zone. Some examples would be from
the brow to eyelid, eyelid to cheek, and jawline to neckline.
It often comes as a surprise to a patient seeking an eyelid lift,
to be told that in addition to that procedure, a brow lift is also
recommended. Full facial rejuvenation is often the best option,
rather than localized isolated procedures. No brow or forehead
lift is complete without consideration of rejuvenating at least
the upper eyelid. However, the final decision is always that of
the patient.
The results will be long lasting. The advantages of the minimally
invasive endoscopic brow lift are the shorter recovery period,
minute incisions, and the natural looking results. The best way
to maintain your rejuvenated appearance is to minimize sun
damage by using an effective sunscreen and to maintain a
healthy lifestyle.
Although Brow Lift and Face Lift surgeries can be done at any
time of the year, patients seem to prefer them most often in the
winter months. During the snowy season, they can hibernate
during recovery without being missed socially. With winter
approaching, if this is a surgery you may be considering, call
our office to schedule your consultation appointment. Maybe
you will spring into 2012 with a more wide eyed look!

THE OUTDOOR POOL OPENS SATURDAY, MAY 24, 2014, 11AM
Outdoor Pool Hours: M-F 11am-8pm; Sat-Sun 11am-6:45pm
Pool Guidelines
Here are a few guidelines to keep you and your family safe this summer season.
In accordance with Allegheny Country regulations, swimming pools are
only open when a lifeguard is on duty. No one
is permitted to enter any club pool without a
lifeguard’s supervision.
During an electrical storm or thunderstorm,
the indoor/outdoor pools and whirlpool will
be cleared of all swimmers at the first sound of
thunder or flash of lightning. The pool will be
re-opened 30 minutes after the last sound of
thunder or flash of lightning.
Proper bathing suits must be worn and thong
bathing suits are prohibited. Women are not
permitted to tan topless. OAC staff has the right to
determine if any specific garment is inappropriate.
Children under the age of 8 must have a parent or
guardian accompany them to pool area.
Children requiring floatation devices must be accompanied in the water
within an arms reach of an adult. Only approved PFD are allowed in
the pools.
Parents are responsible for their children in the baby pool. Baby pool is for
children under the age of 6.
Swim Team
Supplied kickboards and aerobic equipment are for adult use only.
Members may not bring alcohol to the club.
Waterguns, tennis balls, and footballs are not
permitted in any of the pools.
Lap lanes are for lap swimming only.
The sand volleyball court and playground area
is open during open swim hours. The volleyball
sand is to be used for volleyball only; there is a
sandbox located in the playground for children’s
use.
Shoes are not permitted on the Splash Pad.
The lifeguard on duty has authority to make and
enforce safety rules. Please respect the pool rules
and the lifeguard’s decisions. The lifeguards also have the right to make
and enforce additional rules and deny usage to anyone for any reason,
including but not limited to unsafe behavior, disruptive behavior, and
violation of Club policies.
The outdoor pool area will close at 5pm the following dates for home
swim meets, come out and cheer on the Orcas!
Thursday, 6/26, Tuesday, 7/1, Tuesday, 7/8,
and Thursday, 7/17, 2014
Joan Baxter
ext 4139 or jbaxter@oxfordathleticclub.com
Congratulations to the Orcas for a great season in the WCPSL. The
Orcas finished their winning season with a Championship meet at
Steubenville, OH on March 29, 2014. Almost all of the swimmers
finished with their best times. Congratulations to Rebecca Melanson
who was the high point trophy winner for the 7-8 year old girls.
Rebecca finished 1st in all 3 of her events contributing 48 points to our
team score. The Orcas finished 7th of 13.
The summer season will start May 5,
2014. As Champions of the 2013 NHSSL
Silver Division, the Orcas will move up to
the Gold Division and face some pretty
fierce competition. Head Coach Joan
will joined by returning coaches Tammy,
Abby, and Jonathan.
Coach Joan handed out some very special awards at the Championship
meet. In addition to Melanson’s outstanding performance, Alex
Zubrow and Michaela Hinkson were the Swimmers of the Meet.
Zubrow dropped at total of 16.05 seconds in his 3 events and Hinkson
dropped 8.18 seconds off her 3 events. Attendance awards at practice:
1st Anna Mott, 2nd Rebecca Melanson, and 3rd Emily Adkins.
We look forward to a spectacular summer season!
