POPE: JESUS WANTED UNITED CHRISTIANS
January 16, 2015
(Vatican Radio) On Sunday and before the Angelus, the Pope recalled the
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and its theme, "Give me a drink", the sentence uttered by Jesus to the Samaritan woman.
He told the faithful gathered that the "desire for unity" of the disciples of Jesus
is part of our "thirst not only material for water, but above all our thirst for a
full life, free from the slavery of evil and death."
He went on to say that "Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promises because it is
he who gives to the Holy Spirit, the 'living water' that quenches our restless
hearts, hungry for life, love, freedom, peace : thirsty for God.
Pope Francis continued on the theme of unity by saying that, “It is a bad thing
that Christians are divided, Jesus wants us united, one body. Our sins, history
has divided us. For this we must pray that the Holy Spirit bring us together
again".”
Joining the Holy Father were a boy and a girl from the Catholic Action Rome
movement who were part of a group of thousands in the square marking the
annual January "Caravan of Peace". They, along with Pope Francis launched
white doves from the window of his studio.
Following the Angelus, the Pope also remembered the World Day for Sufferers of Leprosy, saying, “I express my closeness to all the people who suffer
from this disease, as well as to those who care for them, and to those who
struggle to remove the causes of the disease, that is, living conditions unworthy of man. Let us renew our commitment of solidarity to these brothers and
sisters. "And finally bringing his Angelus address to a close, and in light of his
recent visit to Asia, the Holy Father had greetings for the Filipino community
in Rome, thanking them for their strong and joyful faith.

A Brief History of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a devotion that focuses attention on the physical
Heart as the symbol of His redemptive love. Although tradition often situates the beginning of
the practice of the devotion to the year 1000, it might be more accurate to place its birth during the time of the great mystics [St. Anselm and St. Bernard] between 1050 and 1150. By the
middle ages, because of a strong emphasis on the Passion of our Lord, and because of the efforts of St. Bonaventure and St. Gertrude the Great, the devotion became popularized as a
means of worshipping the mystery of Christ, living in the Church.
This devotion was promoted by great Saints, including St. Albert the Great, St. Catherine of
Siena, St. Francis de Sales, as well as the great religious orders, such as the Benedictines, the
Dominicans, and the Carthusians. However, it must be recorded that the Saint who is most
often associated with this devotion is St. Margaret Mary Alacoque [1647-1690]. After she received the Vision of the Sacred Heart, which popularized the devotion, she was scorned by
her mother superior who thought her to be delusional. The Saint took ill. Mother superior told
St. Margaret Mary that she would believe the miracle of the vision if the Saint were cured. She
was and St. Margaret was able to promote the devotion under the guidance of her spiritual
director, St. Claude Colombiere. Several books have been published on her extensive letters,
sayings and the revelations given to her by Our Lord.
Her private revelations promoted the establishment of a liturgical feast day and the practice of
offering reparation for the outrages committed against the Blessed Sacrament on the First Fridays and the Promises of the Sacred Heart.
St. Alphonsus was heavily influenced by St. Margaret Mary in his own devotion to the Sacred
Heart.
In modern times it was Pope Pius IX who, in 1856, established the Feast of the Sacred Heart
and encouraged the efforts of the Apostleship of Prayer - a confraternity of faithful Catholics
who encourage groups, families, and communities to consecrate themselves to the Sacred
Heart. In 1928 Pope Pius XI issued his encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor on reparation to
the Sacred Heart. In 1956 Pope Pius XII published his encyclical Haurietis aquas on the nature
of devotion to the Sacred Heart.
The modern devotion to the Divine Mercy is a contemporary expression of devotion to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRAYER BEFORE MASS
Almighty and ever-living God, I approach the sacrament
of Your only-begotten Son Our Lord Jesus Christ. I come
sick to the doctor of life, unclean to the fountain of mercy, blind to the radiance of eternal light, and poor and
needy to the Lord of heaven and earth. Lord, in your
great generosity, heal my sickness, wash away my defilement, enlighten my blindness, enrich my poverty,
and clothe my nakedness. May I receive the bread of
angels, the King of kings and Lord of lords, with humble
reverence, with the purity and faith, the repentance and
love, and the determined purpose that will help to bring
me to salvation. May I receive the sacrament of the
Lord's Body and Blood, and its reality and power. Kind
God, may I receive the Body of Your only-begotten Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ, born from the womb of the Virgin
Mary, and so be received into His mystical body and
numbered among His members. Loving Father, as on my
earthly pilgrimage I now receive Your beloved Son under the veil of a sacrament, may I one day see him face
to face in glory, who lives and reigns with You for ever.
Amen.

THANKSGIVING AFTER MASS
I thank you, holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God,
who deigned to feast me, sinful and unworthy servant,
with the precious body and blood of your Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord, not for any merit of mine, but only because of your merciful goodness. And I pray that this
Holy Communion, far from condemning me to punishment, may bring about my pardon and salvation, encompassing me with the armor of faith and the shield of
a good will. By it let my vices be done away, all lustful
desires extinguished. May it advance me in charity, patience, humility, obedience, and every other virtue. Let it
be strong defense against the wiles of all my enemies,
visible and invisible, allaying for me every disturbance
of flesh and spirit, binding me firmly to you, the one true
God, and bringing my last hour to a happy close. I pray,
too, that it may be your pleasure to call my sinful self
one day to that banquet, wonderful past all telling,
where you, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, feast your
saints with the vision of yourself, who are true light, the
fulfillment of all desires, the joy that knows no ending,
gladness unalloyed, and perfect bliss: through the same
Christ our Lord. Amen.

This is also an evening to spend with old friends and to make new ones. If you are

Free Child Care is Available IF you RSVP by Wednesday, February 11th.

but this is open to anybody who is open to it.
Is Date Night only for St. Theresa Parishioners? No. Feel free to bring friends from other parishes… provided you
RSVP.
Do I need to have a date? No. Many people come alone.
Why must I RSVP? Dinner is prepared from scratch by volunteers, and we want to provide the best experience possible. Be kind… RSVP.
