Our own faculty members are leading several sessions and we have approximately 33% of our teaching staff giving up their weekend to participate. This conference is more fully explained in the next page but we are enthusiastic about thought leaders in the world of enhanced learning through effective use of technology. Also, in our efforts to stay connected to members of our parent community, I am holding meetings with our largest non-English speaking populations this year. The first meeting will be with the Korean parents and will be held on Tuesday, 18 February at 18:00 in the Centre For the Arts Black Box. Translation will be provided. Meetings with the Vietnamese and Japanese parents will be held later in the Spring. plan to attend to attend the games next Friday and Saturday on our fields. UNIS Hanoi hosts major technology conference After lunch, a change of pace, with an exciting afternoon of 34 different presentations for delegates to explore; from digital literacy in the Early Years to 3D Printing and Math, Creating a MOOC in Hanoi, Minecraft Gamification and Geogebra! The conversations will continue with Cocktails at the Intercontinental Hanoi Westlake (conference sponsors) and on Sunday morning, delegates will have the choice of a further 20 workshops featuring leadership workshops, ePortfolios and even “Driven to Digital Distraction!”. This weekend more than 170 educators from 30 different schools and organizations, from 6 different countries, on 3 different continents will converge on UNIS Hanoi for 52 workshops in 3 days! The popularity of VTC 2014 builds on the success of the inaugural conference held last year at Saigon South International School and it promises to be an inspirational weekend for all! UNIS Hanoi is hosting the Vietnam Tech Conference 2014, an annual educational technology conference targeting international schools in Vietnam and designed for teachers, administrators and support staff to network, share effective practices and continue to move the use of technology forward. UNIS Hanoi (founding partners of the conference with Saigon South International School) is hosting this conference for the first time and we are delighted to be leading what promises to be an exhilarating programme, thanks to our team of passionate presenters and generous support from sponsors; Finalsite, 21st Century Learning, Intercontinental Hanoi Westlake and FPT. Launching the conference theme (Learning, Responsibility, Community) will be our keynote speaker, Patrick Green Apple Distinguished educator, Google certified teacher and trainer, leading Google Bootcamp presenter and closing speaker at Google Summit in Kuala Lumpur; recognized as a You Tube ‘star teacher’ and someone with extensive experience in supporting teachers in “flipping” the classroom. Following on his heels will be a giant Speedgeek in our Sports Centre, during which our 170 delegates will be able to ‘sample’ some of the upcoming presentations and gain a quick (6 minute!) insight into a range of 18 different, fascinating ways of integrating technology with learning. Fast and furious fun! I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Tet Break? It has been several weeks since I have contributed to the Tin Tuc. My absence in print has been due to teacher recruitment activities. Each year our Head of School and the Division Principals spend a great deal of time and energy recruiting faculty. To secure the very best faculty UNIS Hanoi attends recruitment fairs where highly qualified teaching candidates interview with school administrators. This year the UNIS Admin Team attended recruitment fairs in Melbourne, Bangkok, London, Cedar Falls (Iowa), and Boston. The competition among schools for talented educators is fierce. Fortunately UNIS Hanoi is a highly sought after school among international educators. Nevertheless, it is a long and exhaustive process but well worth the effort. One of the most important elements in a top caliber school is the ability to hire and retain highly qualified student centered educators. As such, I am happy to report that we have secured a cohort of fantastic teachers who are thrilled to be joining the UNIS community for the 2014-2015 school year. Semester 1 Reports were made available on ISIS family shortly before Tet Break. As such, Honor Roll (GPA: 6.0 – 6.49) and Principal’s List (GPA: 6.5 and above) were calculated. Students earning Honor Roll or Principal’s List status as well as those who were awarded Grade Level Awards were recognized during separate MS and HS assemblies. Please see the list of MSHS award recipients on pages 5-6. Trip Week is coming! Just a reminder that students in Grades 6 – 11 will participate in UNIS Hanoi’s grade level Trip Week programme. Trip Week will take place March 17 – 21. Grade Level Leaders will be sending trip overviews home in the very near future. Upcoming: Feb. 19 – 23: APAC Theatre (Shanghai) and Band (Taejon) Festivals. Feb. 20 – 23: MRISA Junior Soccer (UNIS). Feb. 26, 18:00: Transition from Grade 5 to Grade 6 Parent Evening. Late February – Mid March: MSHS Course Registration for the 2014-2015 school year. Information regarding required subjects, academic expectations and elective offerings will be forthcoming. March 17 – 21: MSHS Trip Week Enjoy a relaxing weekend and stay warm! A little ISA background…. In October 2013, over 33 000 students in 129 schools worldwide took the ISA test. Combined with figures from the February test session, Parents of students in Grades 3-9 should have received an email from the school office earlier this week informing them how to access the ISA report through ISIS. Please join us on Monday, 17 February in the Community Room from 18:00-18:45 for an information session on the ISA report and to have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the test in general. We will run through the following topics and then have time for questions: What is the ISA and who takes this test? How do we read the parent report? What data does the school receive about your child? How does the school use the data from ISA? Why has the school chosen to use ISA? Please consider attending this session if you are new to UNIS Hanoi or to the ISA test. If you wish to follow up your child’s results, you may arrange a time with the relevant teacher by contacting the Elementary or Middle/High Schools’ offices. this means that over 300 schools now use ISA every year. The test takes into account the cultural diversity of students who will take it, and schools are compared against those with a similar English language learner profile. Each year, UNIS Hanoi administers two standardized tests: International Students’ Assessment (ISA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) These are complementary and each has its own advantages. It is very important to remember that this type of test is independent of the school’s curriculum and its main purpose is to triangulate our own assessment data and the observations we make as students learn. The other purpose is to enable us to make comparisons with other schools to ensure we are maintaining a good quality programme of teaching and learning. In addition to ISA, we offer the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests in the autumn and again in the spring. The main differences between ISA and MAP are as follows: Once a year Twice a year Paper and pencil test Online test Mathematics, reading and Mathematics and two writing tasks (narrative and expository) Varied responses including open-ended writing, explaining reasoning and generating ideas Test items are aligned with the Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA) skills framework in Reading and Mathematical literacy reading Multiple choice responses Test items are aligned with the Descartes skills continua that are, in turn, aligned with the US common core curriculum You can read more about the ISA test on its website. Janet Field, Director of Learning dol@unishanoi.org A joint SCO Parent/Tech session was held on Tuesday, 14 January. Our discussion centered around four main areas: Physical Social Educational Digital Citizenship You can click on SCO Parent Session to find the information from our joint meeting. Come and hear from the students some of the exciting ways that they are using technology in their classes. Elementary students will be showcasing their work with blogs and digital portfolios, Middle School students will be sharing their ideas about gamification of education through Minecraft and the value of digital citizenship, and High School students will show how they have created “flipped classrooms” of their own. Please email techdirector@unishanoi.org if you plan to attend the session. All UNIS student tablets have a program called ManicTime installed. ManicTime tracks student use of programs on the tablet. ManicTime was installed in order to help students make better decisions about their use of their tablet. If you are interested in looking at the data from your own child, simply send an email to techdirector@unishanoi.org and we will use the workshop to help you understand what the results actually mean. We will also show you how to access the data yourselves in order to have conversations with your child regarding tablet use. : Get to know about tech tools and parent tips that work! This is the chance to share practical examples of successful use of technology in school and at home. Speedgeeking works exactly like Speed Dating - we will introduce you to a great variety of ideas in a short amount of time. Parent volunteers needed! Please email mmatias@unishanoi.org if you are interested in sharing during the session. : Find out how UNIS Hanoi is working to lead the region in educational technology and innovative learning. Thank you for supporting local families at Tet Time! A group investigating School Culture and Partnerships for Learning is looking at a variety of community-related issues including: How do we know we are providing a good, supportive environment in terms of students’ health and wellbeing? UNIS faculty and staff are currently exploring this question as part of a wider school self-study that is taking place over the next few months. Such a self-study is a key part of being a reflective learning community dedicated to continuous improvement. STANDARD F1 A school climate characterized by fairness, trust, and mutual respect shall support student learning and well -being. This covers: “A culture of shared responsibility for the social and emotional well-being and protection of students is promoted by the school leadership and teachers through programmes to address awareness, prevention and responsiveness to issues such as child abuse, sexual harassment, substance abuse, hazing and bullying, and discrimination in any form.” The self-study is part of a process set by the Council of International Schools (http://www.cois.org/) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (http:// www.acswasc.org/). These accreditation agencies provide standards and indicators against which we measure ourselves. In its regular accreditation cycle, UNIS Hanoi has reached the mid-point of a 10-year accreditation period and so we are currently reflecting on the school’s current stage of development, prior to compiling a Five Year report. “policies, procedures, and practices that promote and What standards apply to health and well-being? Celebration of students’ efforts and achievements The CIS standards address student health and well-being in several ways. Under the umbrella of Access to Teaching and Learning, the self-study looks at learning support, language support, counselling and health services. STANDARD E5 The school shall provide appropriate health care and promote the practices of healthy living to serve student well-being and enhance access to learning opportunities. This covers: Health care services on campus and at school events Programmes, services and an environment that address the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students and staff.” Appreciation of diversity and a climate of mutual respect Fairness in dealing with students’ concerns Confidentiality of personal information Each standard is being investigated by a committee of faculty and staff, including those with specific responsibilities in these areas. They will make evidencebased evaluations and suggest areas for development. The self-study is informed by data from the annual climate survey that invites parents, students, staff and board members to express their views - you may remember contributing to this last November. Representatives of other stakeholder groups will be consulted later in the process, which will continue until our visit from the representatives of WASC and CIS in December 2014. Janet Field, Director of Learning dol@unishanoi.org encourages the adoption of healthy lifestyle choices Building awareness of local health services and requirements, and potential health concerns Building understanding and responding to potential health hazards in the local and wider community.
