The Circuit ...and a word or two from the President's seat — Skip Carter In case you hadn't noticed, the Circuit hasn't exactly been on time the last couple of months. My apologies for that. Unfortunately, it's a period that has a lot of personal issues going on for me, but I expect things to settle down in the next couple of months. There is a lot to be thankful for in spite of a few rough spots. Meanwhile, Suesan and I are in Keystone, Colorado for the 54th Porsche Parade. It's the 4th of July, and the final day of the event. I'm hoping finish this issue today and get it uploaded to our printer tonight so they get in the mail by mid week. We should have copies at Breakfast Club next Saturday, July 11th. The Parade had been wonderful. Mostly sunny, mid70s temperature but a scattered thunderstorm here and there. Keystone is about 90 miles West of Denver in the middle of the Rocky Mountains at 9,400 ft. elevation. To say that it is beautiful is a gross understatement. To say that the people and facilities are wonderful is also a gross understatement. On the Cover... Most of the photos you see in the Circuit are taken by Jimmie Mitchell, including this month's cover from our June Breakfast Club meeting at Frisco's Car Hop Grill. The rain didn't hurt our attendance. As a matter of fact, our Porsches looked spectacular with rain drops beaded up on the paint. There were plenty of 4 - 8 hour organized or selfguided tours setup for us. Suesan and I have driven a few. From abandoned mines to the famous Opera House in Leadville, to the Hotel d'Paris in Georgetown, 12,000 ft. Loveland Pass, Vail, Aspen and more. You can see elk, moose, deer, fox and more as you drive through the mountains. In the August issue we'll publish some photos. I'm sure you can go to the parade web site at www.pca.org for a taste. Our trip home is going through the San Juan mountains to Ouray, Mexican Basket, the Grand Canyon, Prescott and Sedona, Arizona before we get back home to San Diego. You'll see a couple of upcoming GPX event flyers on the next few pages. One is for our October 5 Day Away from Work Drivers Ed / Autocross. The other is our September 26th Octoberfest BBQ. Rick and Kathy Mills are hosting the BBQ at their Long Beach home. It's a Saturday afternoon event that should be quite casual and fun. Mark your calenders. In this issue you'll also see coverage of our May 16 Queen Mary Concours. Dal Lee and his team did a fabulous job. One thing we forgot to do was count total Porsches. Something well over 100 for sure. There had to be over 30 912s and a dozen 356s. You'll see some great cars in the photos... maybe even yours. By the way, the Grand Prix Region is bringing home a 1st place trophy from Parade for the newsletter contest. Regions are divided into five classes, depending on membership. GPX is in Group 3, so The Circuit was considered the best newsletter in regions our size in 2008. We were again joined by the 912 Registry, and there were several cars from the Porsche 356 Club as well. It was a great place to be if you enjoy hanging out with a bunch of Porsche folks on a wonderful Southern California day. Richard Elliott and his 2002 Boxster S Josh & Dyan Hoffman's 1984 Cab Attendance at this event was the highest in memory with well over 100 Porsches coming through the gates. Dal Lee and his team did a fabulous job in his first year as the GPX Concours chair. Mike & Lisa Wilson's 1963 356B There were some very special cars in attendance. Bob Weber brought Peter Gregg's IMSA champion 934.5, and Wayne Dempsey brought his very rare Porsche 959. Chris Toy brought one of the most interesting cars, a very well done 356 Outlaw sporting a 930 engine. An extremely nice looking '64 Coupe. Roy Lock's Bali Blue 356B Roadster was a hit, and there were so many fabulous examples of exquisitely restored 912s, it was hard to choose a favorite. We want to thank Pacific Porsche for their support. Pacific sponsored our great trophies in addition to Carl Toffelmire bringing one of the new 997 PDK's for us to ogle over. Dr. Colorchip and Taylor's Cigar Lounge were also sponsors. As usual, the Grand Prix Region volunteers made this a very well run event, starting with Suesan Way and the whole registration process. Chuck Bartron & his 1984 930 Brett Mohr cleaning his 1966 912 Josh & Dyan Hoffman & Cayman S All in all it was a very well run and very well attended concours. You can see from the photos, the variety and quality of cars on display was pretty impressive. Thanks to Dal Lee and his team. You guys did an awesome job, and I can't wait until next year. Most people had already left. They had just driven 3 hours in horrible traffic and got there late. They had seen the flyers featuring the 934.5 and had come to see it. It takes some time to pack this car up, and I was just ready to drive to the trailer when they walked up. They asked if I could open the car up and let them look at it — which I did. They asked questions and took pictures. Spencer Lee The grandfather had seen Peter race in the '70s and was in awe of him. He had told the stories about the 934.5 and 935s and Porsche racing dominance to his grandson, who wasn't even born when the Brumos 934.5 was raced by Peter. But the grandson was in awe also of the stories, and asked this grandfather to come see the car. The grandson was hooked on Porsche from stories of the fire breathing 935s and wanted to see and hear one in person. Even though they arrived late, they got to see one of the cars that put Porsche racing on the map in America. They were both so grateful to relive some memories from the past as the grandfather explained the racing escapades of Peter Gregg. They were creating their own memories. That memory is priceless, right? It's a defining moment in someone's life. That memory is what burns inside of you and me! A new generation, totally hooked on computers and electronic gadgets, absolutely love the raw, unsophisticated power of these 934.5s and 935s! Amazing. Earlier, two twentyish year olds came up to me — in total awe of the 934.5. They too had heard of Peter Gregg and saw pictures from the '70s. One had just purchased his first 911 because of the racing heritage from the '70s. They absolutely loved the fact that the car was "old technology" — no computer controls, all mechanicals, driven by pure finesse and the superior human ability that Peter Gregg had. This was another priceless moment for me. Twenty year olds loving a 1977 race car! A defining moment in their lives also. Dal Lee asked if he could place his young son, Spencer, in the cockpit seat and take a picture of his proud son behind the wheel. You know that picture will be around for generations to come. And this young boy will also own a Porsche, for sure. A priceless moment. And defining moment in time. So, that's what makes my day — making people happy and sharing the dream that I had years ago. We are only "caretakers/stewards of the history" and "keepers of the flame" as Dave Aase, the previous 934.5 owner, said to me as we signed the sales papers. So true. Thank you again for having me come to your concours Bob Weber . Jim Thomas 14 July 09 Coming next year — A Tour to the Anza Borrego Desert In our own back yard is an amazingly beautiful area that most Southern Californians have never seen — the Anza Borrego Desert. While some people enjoy it year round, even when the temperature reaches 115 plus, we're talking about a day tour in the cooler months when you can walk around in the sunshine without risk of a heat stroke. There are always incredible sights, but the best is a few short weeks after a wet winter (I know, hasn't happened lately) when the wildflowers are just unbelievable. If it is a wet winter, there will not be much notice for the tour. Otherwise, we'll have plenty of time to set it up. Watch for more information early in 2010 4445 E. Anaheim St Long Beach, CA 90804 562-301-4929 15 The Circuit Breakfast Club Meeting Report — June 6 by Skip Carter photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter The last several Breakfast Club meetings have conflicted with other major Porsche events in the Los Angeles area, and June was no exception. The Porsche 356 Club's "Friends of Steve McQueen Car Show" at the Boy's Republic in Chino was the same morning, and several of our regular attendees were helping out in Chino, which was a good thing. The Grand Prix Region has been very happy to support this event. Besides being raised there, Steve McQueen was a huge Porsche guy and a great PCA member. I'm writing this article while at the Porsche Parade in Keystone, Colorado. At our first banquet, special recognition was given to Panorama Editor Betty Jo Turner. Betty Jo has been our editor for 40 years! You should have seen the photos of her climbing under cars and interviewing the absolute biggest names in Porsche history. She has done it with grace and quality second to none. The reason I'm mentioning Betty Jo is that it was she, in the pits at Sebring decades ago, who got Steve McQueen to join the Porsche Club of America. This is just one of the reasons we all owe such gratitude to Betty Jo. 16 2 1 4 3 5 6 July 09 7 8 9 The other thing at June Breakfast was the rain. If there is one thing that makes a Porsche more beautiful (in my humble opinion), it is rain drops glistening on them. You'll see in some of these photos. In spite of the rain and McQueen event, we still almost record attendance. Frisco's has proved to be a wondering venue for GPX. We really appreciate the quality of their service. We had lots of new members this month, and a special door prize from Los Angeles Helicopters, headquartered at Long Beach Airport. GPX member, Lars Fallman, is Chief of Maintenance and a partner there. They donated a "30/30" prize... 30 minute ground school and a 30 minute flight... very cool. The prize went to Albert Franco, who promptly gave it back to us to raffle for ASUDEC (Africa's Sustainable Development Council - see article in this issue). What a guy!!! 10 Anyway, June was a great Breakfast, and July is being pushed to the 11th because of the 4th falling on the first Saturday. In retrospect, I'm not sure we needed to do that, but too late to go back. 11 See you all on the 11th of July. 12 13 1. Robert Venezia and his new 997 2. Jeff Haas made his first trip to Friscos 3. The problems facing the people of Burkina Faso lie primarily in its high level of poverty, the illiteracy of its population, the lack of business opportunity in its rural environment and the traditional banking approaches of financial institutions that prioritize their own need for survival as an institution. In our article in the May Circuit, Suesan and I shared with you how ASUDEC helps the Burkinab people rise above a seemingly insurmountable state of poverty through the implementation of a poverty reduction program administered by ASUDEC Mutual, ASUDEC’s micro credit institution. ASUDEC avoids handouts in its approach to encourage self-promotion and constructive risk-taking. This is why ASUDEC adopted Heifer International's practice of passing on the gifts, which ASUDEC adapted to the culture of African solidarity to promote an interdependent system of development. For example, when ASUDEC grants ten hens to a family, it also provides all the veterinary care for at least 12 months, the time necessary for the recipient to reproduce at least 300 hens and to become convinced of the advantages of and adopt the good practices ASUDEC has taught them during that 12 months. From this stock, ASUDEC takes back only 20 hens, 10 of which are passed on to a new family in need and 10 of which are used to contribute to the enormous costs of the program supported by ASUDEC. In the majority of Burkinab villages, the need for construction or repair of infrastructures such as schools, wells and pumps, maternities often greatly exceed the intervention capacities of the Burkinab government. And, any required contribution, even for the repair of something as seemingly insignificant as a water pump, is frequently the subject of serious conflict within the village. In order to reduce these kinds of conflicts and to contribute directly to the community’s local development, ASUDEC proposes that each of its recipients who benefit directly from its projects, contribute a small amount of their financial growth towards their community’s expenses. The extent to which an aid recipient is expected to contribute to their village varies depending on the village needs. The nature and rate of contribution is designated by the Local Sustainable Development Council of ASUDEC elected within the village. The village’s Local Sustainable Development Council is responsible for the management of these resources, and is accountable before the village assembly. By adopting this self-sustaining system, ASUDEC’s recipients become aid givers, not only to other families, but also to their own communities. This strategy makes it possible to extend the project both over time and geographically to new recipients while at the same time contributing to the recipient’s family’s well-being and to the recipient’s community’s development. Please join GPX in its commitment to support ASUDEC’s efforts to help the people of Burkina Faso become self-sustaining. Your generosity to this honorable endeavor will be rewarded! Lovely car. $155,000 USD BUYER’S AND SELLER’S REMORSE COUNSELING AVAILABLE 21 The Circuit Book Review for Porschephiles Bruce Herrington by Bruce Herrington, Riverside Region Porsche: The Sports Racing Cars 1953-72 by Anthony Pritchard Published by Haynes Publishing, UK, this book is one of two books available from Motorbooks that deal with Porsche racing in the 60s and 70s (the other is Porsche Racing Cars 1953 to 1975 by Brian Long). Both books are based heavily on the Porsche archives, but present their material differently. Porsche The Sports Racing Cars 1953-72 contains so much information about the races and the competition that it might be subtitled ‘Porsche Racing’… or even ‘Sports Car Racing’ and could be of interest to enthusiasts of a variety of marques – Ferrari, Lotus, BRM, Borg-Ward! (Remember the Spyder-like Borg-Ward race cars? The sedans maybe?) Pritchard’s book is organized by the cars, describing their development, evolution and race experiences. A lot of information is presented about engine bore/stroke/compression and suspension changes during the race seasons. Though the graphic layout is visually spare with large blocks of the very informative text, the book is illustrated, sparsely perhaps, with salon quality pictures. Some of the pictures are never before published items from the Porsche archives. The race reports it presents are so detailed that the book reads like a contemporary Road & Track. For example: “Two hours before the 3PM start, the sky became heavily overcast and a heavy shower soaked the circuit.”; “Elford pulled into the pits because the control-rod between the slide rod and fuel injection unit broke.” Less than half of the book is devoted to the 4 cylinder era, the bulk being devoted to the 6 and 8 cylinder racers, with almost one third of the book devoted to extensive and intensive coverage of the 917s. To this reviewer, the reports of the Factory’s participation in Formula 1 (and its abortiveness), with the 804 single seat car, are more comprehensive than any others ever read. Pritchard provides a set of appendices of unique reference value. Included are – Drivers biographies 22 with portraits; car specifications; race results (all series) by year; World Championship results by year; detailed descriptions of individual 917s by chassis number; and the inside story of the development of the 917, by chief designer Hans Mezgar. The indices (Cars, People, Races) are more useful than they at first appear, and include a reference to the 1971 CanAm race at Riverside. They will be available at the July Board Meeting for those who would like a copy. July should be printed and mailed to everyone in addition to the electronic distribution. If you arenot receiving email notices from us, which includes the electronic version of the Cirdcuit, contact Skip with your email information. There was some discussion regarding advertising costs versus the cost of producing the Circuit. Skip to do some analysis and report back to the board. President’s Report: We are continuing to look for event sponsorship for our Track days and Concours. Circle is currently not in a position to provide full sponsorship as they have done in the past, which it is even more important to support our sponsors in these economic times. We still have the metal Porsche sign to sell. Chair Reports: Treasurer’s Report – Account in the black. Membership - As of May 31 our total membership is 587 with 12 non renewals. Tech Sessions - Rick Mills will look into a tech session at LA Helicopters – Skip to check possible dates and get back to Rick. We are also considering splitting a Saturday between two shops: Art Arredondo and Kenny Bornstein in August. We are also working with Benton Performance. Social - Oktoberfest is set for Saturday, September 26 at the home of Rick & Kathy Mills. Cost will be $10.00 per person - Brats and beer/soda. Tours - Newcomb Ranch tour is on June 13. Marty and Brita are also looking into a Santa Paula tour and possibly a trip to Catalina in December. In 2010 they are looking at tour to Borrego Springs and others. 26 Parade 2009: The annual Porsche Parade will be at Keystone Colorado with 23 GPX members registered. Michael Dolphin is hosting a Zone 8 reception and is asking regions to contribute $20.00 for each entrant to cover costs. The board approved the request for GPX. October Day Away: The next Day Away from Work Drivers Ed / Autocross will be on October 5th at Streets of Willow. Michael Dolphin thinks we need a way of letting drivers know their times as soon as possible. When we purchased our timing equipment, we put off buying a large, wireless display. The board decided it was time to make the purchase, so Marty Goldsmith will look into costs so it will be operational by October 5th. A Tech Inspection Committee is to be formed to improve and standardize our procedures for Tech Inspections. Greg Schill will work with Richard Clewett to make it happen. Meeting Adjourned July 09 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races August 14-16, 2009 Celebrating Porsche's 60th Anniversary Claude Mitchell Somehow I neglected to include Claude's 12th year anniversary as a Porsche Club of America member in the April Anniversaries — my apologies — Claude is a regular at Breakfast Club and most GPX social events, and a fixture on the grid team at the California Festival of Speed each year. We're thrilled to have him as a GPX member! PCA ZONE 8 CONCOURS The Los Angeles Region of the Porsche Club of America is pleased to announce the relocation of our annual concours to the famous Greystone Mansion on Loma Vista Drive in Beverly Hills. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Porsche cars, the move to this historic venue more closely aligns the event with values embodied by Porsche since its inception in 1948. Gothic and Neoclassic architectural features of the mansion evoke the spirit of the birthplace of Porsche — the man and the car.
