He was nicknamed “The Red Priest” because he was a Catholic priest with red hair. A virtuoso violinist, Vivaldi was a prolific composer of music ranging from chamber music to sacred choral works. Gloria, a twelve movement work, was composed in 1715. Domine Fili Unigenite, the seventh movement, follows Domine Deus for soprano solo, and preceeds Domine Deus, Agnus Dei for alto solo and chorus. The literal translation of Domine Fili Unigenite is: O Lord our Savior, only Son of God, Christ Jesus. It is my feeling (and that of most editors and arrangers) that this work should only be sung in the original Latin, and therefore there is no alternate English text in this music. Fo r un pro law m ful otio to na co l u py se or on pr ly int Originally for SATB voices and orchestra, this arrangement for SAB (Soprano, Alto, Baritone) voices affords choirs of many sizes and abilities the opportunity to sing this great work. The ranges for all voices, especially the baritone, do not extend beyond ease of singing. In addition, the piano part has been simplified. This work should be sung with pure vowels and accented attacks and phrases as dictated by the music to capture the excitement of the work. Realize all text accents within the phrases. For example: Do-mi-ne, fi-li, Je-su, Chri-ste A main characteristic of this piece, and of Baroque is the dotted-eighth sixœ Œ b music, œ œ .sixteenth œ . note, teenth note patterns. These should be sung as&an œeighth rest and a Do - mi - ne sixteenth note for greater stylistic clarity. For example: œ. œ œ. œ Œ &b œ &b œ Do - mi &b œ ne - œ. œ œ. œ Œ œ ≈œ œ ≈œŒ Do - mi ne - Should be sung: &b œ œ ≈œ œ ≈œ Œ Do - mi ne - In addition, Do - mia slight ne “h” in the separation of the dotted-eighths and sixteenths might addb greater rhythmic ≈ œ ≈œ Œ b ≈ œ ≈ clarity œ Œ such as: & œ &b œ œ Do - mi &b & œ œ œ ≈œ œ ≈œŒ - ne Do - mi - (hi) ne œ œ Do - mi - (hi) ne (he) (he) ≈œ œ ≈œŒ œ to maintain the integrity of this timeless movement, considered by many to I haveœtried Do - Vivaldi’s mi - (hi) ne (he) choral work, and hope you enjoy singing this arrangement. be from greatest Russell Robinson, Arranger CM9405 Domine Fili Unigenite 3 from Gloria for SAB Voices with Piano ANTONIO VIVALDI Arranged by Russell Robinson Allegro q = 120 3 4 Fo r un pro law m ful otio to na co l u py se or on pr ly int Piano 3 4 mf 5 9 Soprano Alto Do mi ne Fi li U ni ge ni Fi li U ni te, Je Baritone Do CM9405 mi ne ge ni te, Copyright © 2015 by Carl Fischer, LLC.
