Feb. 19 Board Meeting -All Board meetings held at 10:00 am at the Italian Cottage restaurant 2234 Esplanade, Chico. Members welcome and encouraged to attend our first Board meeting of the year and help plan the coming year. Mar. 19 Training Meeting-Oroville Sierra Foothill Laboratory, Colusa Welcomes Kristin Baker to the Staff Born in Lancaster, California, her family relocated to Gridley and Oroville where she grew up, and graduated from Oroville High School in 2009. She was continuing her education at Butte College in Early Childhood Education when we were able to convince her to come to work for us in Colusa last May. Her husband Jeremy Cain works for the City of Colusa as a Mechanic/Operator for the Streets Department. They have an adorable 20 month old daughter Kylie. We all love to spoil Kylie with cookies and candy just so we can see that smile she has. After spending many months commuting from Oroville they found a house to rent here in Colusa. She no longer falls asleep at the lab bench! Kristin spends her days preparing Bacti Media for all of Sierra Foothill Laboratory locations. She has also quickly learned to run Ammonia and TKN distillations, set up and read Coliform samples and will soon be proficient at BOD determinations. Kristin also serves as a back up courier for Twila when she is on vacation. She still talks of pursuing a career working with children, so we try to be childish as often as possible to keep her here. So if you get a chance to meet Kristin while she is driving the courier route, or get to talk to her on the phone, (We might let her attend a training session one of these days so you can meet her.) please wish her a warm welcome and put in a good word for a career in Wastewater. By the way if the name Cain sounds familiar, Kristin’s father in law is the Public Works Administrator for the City of Colusa. 3 President’s Message by Nolan Randall/CH2M HILL November Meeting in Yuba City: Our last training of the year was held in Yuba City. We had some slight miscommunication with one speaker, but the crew adapted and put on a great day of training. With our first speaker missing it allowed more time for the other speakers to talk and they had a lot to talk about. While our second speaker was setting up, April improvised and we went around the room everyone introducing themselves and telling where they worked and what they did. Gary Doty and Derek Walker of Hach and Pat Posthumus of Yuba City were soon finished setting up and our meeting continued. Gary , Derek and Pat gave a presentation of the Hach TNT+ Tests for TKN and Nitrate; Keith Bourgeous of Carollo Engineering presented a talk on UV Disinfection; and Andrew O’Keefe of Electro Scan Company showed how their technology works to detect leaks. All talks were very interesting and topped off with an amazing lunch provided compliments of the Yuba City Wastewater Facility. The next time you see a training event on the calendar in Yuba City, go! Not only will you experience some great training, you will enjoy a great lunch too. A tour of the Sunsweet Fruit Processing facility followed lunch. I was not able to go on the tour this year, but did take the tour a couple years ago at a training in Yuba City and it was a very interesting tour. Year in Review: The year included some great training (and great food, of course) in Oroville, Colusa, Grass Valley, Redding, and Yuba City. For 2013 we also added a fun event where we spent an evening at the sprint car races in Chico. There was a small CWEA crowd, but all who attended had a great time. Look for it again on the calendar for 2014. We toured some interesting facilities in addition to the normal wastewater facilities and equipment: a Chinese Temple, mushroom production facility, and a fruit processing plant. The year also had some down points as we lost a couple good friends in Jim Hawley and Greg Cash. With that I leave you with the hopes for a better 2014. 2013 Awards Banquet: Our annual awards banquet will be held on February 1st at the Feather Falls Casino in Oroville (see more information elsewhere in this newsletter). As proven last year, the food will be great, the company will be greater, and the fun will never end… Pic’s top to bottom Pat Posthumus demonstrating the Hach nitrogen test The attentive crowd at the Yuba City WWTP Kieth Bourgeous discussing UV disinfection 4 Northern Sacramento Valley Section Corporate Sponsors 5 Northern Sacramento Valley Section Corporate Sponsors gcjc2@juno.com mikeambrosi@aquadyneassociates 6 Northern Sacramento Valley Section Corporate Sponsors 7 Northern Sacramento Valley Section Corporate Sponsors 8 2014 NORTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY SECTION MEMBERSHIP, ADVERTISEMENT & NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION N.S.V.
