BECKER A PLACE TO LEARN AND GROW Special Area Staff Exploratories: Art, Music, PE, Library Gifted & Talented: Scholars & Challenge Math Remedial Reading Speech Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy Pupil Personnel Services AWB SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA PROGRAM DANIELLE DEFEO • The AWB Library Media Program develops curriculum units that align with the NYS Common Core. Serving all students in grades K-5, the library media specialist collaborates with teaching staff on research projects and literacy lessons. The mission of library is to ensure that the students are effective users of ideas and information. Students have opportunities in library to research and analyze print, as well as computer resources. In addition, they are able to check out a library book once a week. YOUNG • Students in K-5 will explore a wide range of art projects, media and forms. • Media includes drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, weaving, mask making and collage. • Concepts explored include color theory, balance and symmetry, perspective, pattern and texture. • Projects will help to develop skills such as cutting, gluing, mixing colors, drawing from observation, painting techniques and handbuilding with clay. • Art projects frequently reinforce concepts from other disciplines such as math concepts, technology , science and language arts. • Students will also be introduced to other cultures and time periods through the context of art. Some of these include Adobe architecture, ancient Egypt, pre-historic cave paintings and Op-Art. • Grades are based on effort and successful completion of assignments. By nature, art is highly individualized, and each student will be graded according to his or her own ability level. PHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH MR. HERWICK AND MS. LOUGHLIN WHY DO WE TAKE PE? A. W. Becker K-5 Music Program *Through General Music (K-5), Band (5) & Chorus (5), students at AWB will meet the NYS and National Core Arts Standards for Music. *All grade K-5 students are scheduled for General Music for 45 minutes each week. *All grade 5 students have the opportunity to join Band & Chorus. Each ensemble meets twice a week for 30 minutes. Students in Band will have additional small group lessons each week. Students in the Challenge Math program meet for an hour, once a week, and are exposed to a variety of mathematical concepts. Some concepts mirror what is taught in their regular classroom, but meet with a higher level of complexity and rigor. Students are also exposed to math content that is outside of the regular, grade-level curriculum (ex. Algebraic equations in 3rd, Fibonacci sequence in 4th, and function tables in 5th). Scholars • The Scholars program is an ELA based program that incorporates a strong Science and/or Social Studies component. Students in this program (gr. 4 & 5) meet once a week for three hours. They work through a variety of units including, but not limited to: The Brain & Neuromarketing, Greek Mythology, Invention & Engineering, and Folktales. Most units have an accompanying novel/assigned reading, a research component, a writing component, and a culminating project. Additionally, students are continuously immersed in either Latin & Greek roots or a systematic vocabulary program depending on the grade level. REMEDIAL READING MRS. CAMPBELL, MRS. DALEY, MRS. STAGNITTA, MRS. STEWART, MRS. WHEELER, MRS. RENALDI Make reading a part of every day • Share conversations with your child over meal times and other times you are together. • Read together everyday. • Be your child’s best advocate. • Be a reader and a writer. • Visit the library often. IF YOUR CHILD IS JUST BEGINNING TO “LEARN” TO READ At home you can help by… 1. Practicing the sounds of language. (Read books with rhymes, teach your child rhymes, short poems, and songs. Play simple word games.) 2. Helping your child take spoken words apart and put them together. (Help your child separate the sounds in words, listen for beginning and ending sounds, and put separate sounds together.) 3. Practicing the alphabet by pointing out letters wherever you see them and by reading alphabet books. IF YOUR CHILD IS READING… At home you can help your child by… 1. Rereading familiar books. (Children need practice in reading comfortably and with expression in books they know.) 2. Building reading accuracy. (As your child is reading aloud, point out words he has missed and help him read words correctly.) 3. Building reading comprehension. (Talk with you child about what she is reading. Ask about new words. Talk about what happened in the story. Ask what new information she has learned from the nook. Encourage her to read on her own.) PUPIL PERSONNEL SERVICES MS. VAN ETTEN As the school psychologist, I work with parents, faculty, and staff to support students who have learning, behavioral, or social problems. I perform assessments on students for the Committee on Special Education and the Child Study Team. When students are at-risk for social or behavioral problems, I work with students in the Check-In/Check-Out program and support teams in creating individualized behavior plans. MR. TRAINOR As a Guidance Counselor, I provide education, prevention and intervention services in the school setting. This includes facilitating individual and group counseling, providing direct instruction in the classrooms, and supporting teachers and parents with specific strategies to enhance a student’s coping mechanisms and resiliency. I assist in planning for all students across grade levels to ensure that they meet academic goals and behavioral expectations. I am a member of the Pupil Personnel Services team, which provides school wide support to all students, and classrooms. MS. BRUSIC Working in a school environment as a social worker the emphasis of my practice is to support students and help them to be ready to learn. This can encompass using strategies that are preventative such as whole classroom interventions. This is done using the Second Step curriculum. This program provides students with the information and strategies to manage their emotions. This program is implemented in kindergarten through 5th grade classes. As a member of the PPS team we assess and address the social emotional needs of the whole student body. MRS.LYLE AND MRS.
