March is “Music in Our Schools Month” across New York State. RCS is proud to have a music program that offers opportunities for music instruction for all ability levels. From our classroom music curriculum to active participation in Band and Chorus, the RCS music program is very active both in and out of the community. Students often become involved in the music program in fifth grade and continue through to our award-winning Band and Chorus ensembles in the middle and high schools. Students participate in numerous concerts, All-County Festivals, and Solo and Ensemble Festivals sponsored by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA). They also have the opportunity to participate in our extracurricular ensembles including jazz ensemble and select chorus. Students in the program often perform at least two grade levels above their peers in reading and written language. Scholars meets once a week for two and a half hours. Challenge Math The Challenge Math Program is open to students in grades 3 to 5. The Challenge Math Program is for students identified to be of high academic ability in the area of mathematics. Activities in this program are meant to enrich the classroom experience by exposing students to a more complex and advanced curriculum. Challenge Math groups meet for one pull-out session weekly for one hour. MS Accelerated Program This program offers seventh and eighth graders the opportunity to take advanced and high school earth science and math courses. Advanced Placement The AP program provides students with an opportunity to take college-level courses and, with passage of the AP exams, potentially earn college credits. Even if credits are not available, the courses provide students with an advantage when applying to colleges. University in High School The University in High School Program provides high-performing students an opportunity to take college-level courses during the school day at RCS. The courses, such as American History 101 and Biology 100, are taught by RCS teachers approved by the University at Albany. New Visions/BOCES Through a partnership with Capital Region BOCES, the New Visions Program provides seniors an opportunity for in-depth, on-the-job training in medical, journalism and other professions. Setting high expectations for students and rewarding positive behavior are only some of the ways we encourage character growth. Lessons often extend beyond the classroom and into the community, where RCS students strive to increase awareness of global and local issues. Here are a few ways that RCS students stretched themselves last year: Elementary schools 4 For seven weeks, 17 students grades 4 and 5 at A.W. Becker trained to run the 28th Annual Freihofer’s 1 Mile Kids Run. The students' training included coming to school early three days a week and preparing their bodies to run the race by learning how to stretch, how to pace themselves and how to mentally prepare and endure distance running. 4 The grades 4 and 5 Student Government officers and representatives of A.W. Becker volunteered at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York in December. 4 Grade 5 students at Pieter B. Coeymans were part of a wonderful musical experience that took place at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady. Students took in the sights and sounds of the Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) as they performed musical selections of American composers including Charles Ives and Aaron Copland. 4 48 Pieter B. Coeymans grades 4 and 5 students enjoyed a spirited run on a perfect Friday afternoon. The annual cross country race was nearly a mile, along the perimeter of the school. The emphasis is on fun and fitness every year, and every participant received a post-race ribbon. Middle School 4 More than 60 students were recognized for their academic performance, citizenship, perfect attendance and outstanding achievement. 4 20 middle school students – 19 in grade 7 and one in grade 9 – were inducted this spring into the National Junior Honor Society. 4 Six middle school students received the Sandra G. Morley Physical Education Leadership Awards. 4 Grade 7 student Gillian Bartlett and her "dream team" raised more than $1,100 for the RCS Best Buddies program. 4 The Middle School Science Olympiad team placed third regionally and competed at the state level. High School 4 Graduating seniors were recognized at the annual Senior Awards Night with Hall of Fame honors, certificates of achievement, medals and a total of more than $72,850 in scholarships and awards. Many of the 47 students and their families were in attendance for the recognition. 4 29 high school students were inducted into the National Honor Society. Candidates must first have a cumulative grade point average of at least 90.0% and are then selected by a Faculty Council as meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. 4 Brian Netkin, Karra Douglas and John Greene demonstrated superior career skills by placing third statewide during the Skills USA Career and Technical Education (CTE) competition in Syracuse. 4 More than 100 RCS elementary and secondary students performed instrumental and vocal solos during the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Evaluation Festival at Voorheesville High School. 4 Three RCS band students were selected to participate in rehearsals and perform with the Capital Region Wind Ensemble. The three students – Emmalyn Knapp, Kathryn Rowzee and Benjamin Andrews – were among the 24 area students selected to participate this year. 4 A total of 515 high school students, representing 90 percent of the school's entire population, participated in the second quarter Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) Recognition Bagel Breakfast in February. The high school group hailed from the school's Diversity Club, led by Jessica Doer, an RCS High School social worker. They talked with the younger students about what bullying is, issues that stem from bullying and answered their questions on the topic. In an effort to demonstrate the Diversity Club's mantra of recognizing and appreciating the diversity in all students, the high school group bridged the age gap by eating lunch and participating in recess with the elementary students. During some kickball and football games, the high school students demonstrated positive peer interactions for the younger students. 4 Grade 10 student Zachary Clouse was recognized on Tuesday, April 18, for his efforts to bring school supplies to needy RCS families last summer. He was recognized during the Capital District YMCA's Student and Education Award Recognition breakfast held at the Appel Inn in Altamont. A 10-year member of the Ravena Troop 1067 Boy Scouts, Zachary's service project was to raise more than $2,000 in donations from the community and local businesses to distribute 113 backpacks filled with school supplies to families in need in the RCS district. The collaboration was in conjunction with St. Patrick's Food Pantry in Ravena. 4 The RCS Sports Association, Inc., a non-profit organization that promotes, enhances and supplements the RCS Athletic programs and athletes, began a GoFundMe fund-raising effort his year to raise money for a new concession stand. 4 RCS Middle and High School students sent 51 cards and well wishes to Ella Wetterhahn, a 93-year-old World War II nurse who lives in Albany. Ella, also known at Stella, lives in Albany and served as an Army Nurse in the European Theater during WWII. She has been the subject of two Albany Times Union articles over the years about her World War II experiences in which she served with conviction and bravery. NEW!
