Stuck in the hole More Than One Way to Get Stuck Nothing is as discouraging as becoming "stuck in the hole", yet is it not uncommon in drilling. While there are many ways you can be stuck in the hole, they all have the potential to stall operations and result in lost productivity. 6 Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. Certain ground conditions can lead to your equipment being jammed. Clay can swell enormously when water is introduced and this swelling can trap the rod and drill bit. Coming across sand can also be harmful as the sand can collapse around the drilling equipment. On the other hand, the rod string can also break, either from too much pressure or by being dropped, and you will need to try and retrieve it. Finally, a bit that has melted and fused to the rock is a bad situation that will stop operations quickly. In each case, especially if you have achieved a significant depth in drilling over a long period of time, it is preferable to try and retrieve what equipment you can than to start over drilling a new hole. Different methods and products are available depending on the situation. Tools can help If you have dropped your rod or it has broken in the hole, you can use recovery tools, fishing tools, or casing cutters to try and retrieve the rod. If unsuccessful, wedges can be used to deviate from your original borehole. Some guidance in proper hole maintenance, and how to use water to improve conditions can also be helpful. Our technical onsite support team can visit a drill site and offer corrective solutions quickly so you are up and running as soon as possible. 7 FORDIA.COM Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. Hole Deviation 8 Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. Dealing with a deviated hole Drill holes can be very unpredictable in the path that they take, so drillers often have to deal with hole deviation. Hole deviation is when the hole ends up going in a direction other than the chosen trajectory. Multiple factors can play a role in causing this to happen, such as rock formation in the ground that you are drilling, the type of bit used, the weight on the bit, type of rods and tooling, the set-up of the drill rig and its location, among others. Prevent it or correct it Fortunately, equipment and accessories are now available to help prevent or correct hole deviation. These include wedges, measurement tools and more. Reducing Water Consumption Environmentally safe practices Are you struggling to find ways to reduce your water consumption? Water shortages, emphasis on environmentally safe practices, government restrictions and regulations for drilling and mining companies – all combine to increase pressure on companies to find ways to reduce and recycle the water they use. Until recently, water treatment systems very large, expensive machines with limited efficiency and functionality. Now transportable systems exist that whose primary function is to separate cuttings from water so that the same water can be re-used. 10 Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. "Growing emphasis on green or environmentally safe practices means that customers find themselves under pressure to recycle water. Our water treatment system is an innovative and economical option." Extending Bit Life A Great Way to Increase Productivity Getting the longest life possible for a drill bit is key consideration if you want to run a productive and profitable drilling operation. Changing a bit takes time especially the farther down the hole it is, and the time spent replacing a bit is not productive. 12 Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. For example, given that a bit averages approximately 125 meters, if you have to drill 1.000 meters you can expect to change the bit 8 times. If you can extend the life of a bit by only 15%, you can expect one less drill bit replacement. The further into the hole you’ve drilled, the more time saved this represents. At about 800-1.000 meters, it can take up to 4 hours to replace a bit. In shallow depths, you may be able to achieve your objectives with only one bit, if you use the current methods and products that have been developed to extend bit life. By learning how to choose the right matrix and the best water way configuration, you can easily extend the life of your bit considerably. Drilling in Flowing Sands 32 Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. Overcoming a sandy situation A major challenge for any driller is trying to drill with flowing sands. The term flowing sands refers to a mixture of fine sand and water that infiltrates drilling equipment. This problem often arises when using hollow stem augers to perform SPT tests. The flowing sands will enter the hollow stem auger and prevent a driller from obtaining an accurate sample. As you advance an auger to 3 or 4 meters beyond the water table, fine sand particles try to make their way into the auger. The deeper you go, the more difficult the situation can become. The annulus of the borehole contains a large amount of water. When the volume of water on the outside of the augers becomes greater than the volume of water on the inside of the auger, the pressures want to equalize. This means that water from the outside of the auger wants to travel to the inside of the augers and there are only 2 ways it can get there. It can either be forced in from the bottom or it can flow in from the auger joints. Another common example is during the installation of stand pipes or piezometers. If you are trying to install a piezometer at a depth of 20 meters, you may have difficulty making connections at 10 meters. Once you reach 20 meters, you may notice 3 meters of sand inside your augers. Unfortunately, it is impossible to set a piezometer in place without removing the sand. Learn about the two types of augers we offer on page 44 Prevention can be the key The solution is to prevent the flowing sands from entering the auger early. You can add water to your hollow stem auger every time you make a new connection which will help equalize the pressure. You can also use dry auger connections which come with an O-ring on the pin and a compression seal in the box end. This will seal the augers and prevent material from entering through loose or worn connections. Using a drilling additive such as Sand Drill is also recommended as it can help bind the sand and stabilize the hole. There are other options available but why not contact a tech support technician for advice? 33 FORDIA.COM Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. Vane Shear Testing Geotechnical testing to ensure safety A vane shear test is a method of testing soil characteristics on site, or in-situ. The data you get from a vane shear test can help develop guidelines for construction of foundations and other geotechnical needs. Unlike other types of tests, it doesn’t require that a soil sample be taken or the use of additional lab equipment to analyze the soil. 34 Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier. A vane shear test is a method of testing soil characteristics on site, or in-situ. The data you get from a vane shear test can help develop guidelines for construction of foundations and other geotechnical needs. Unlike other types of tests, it doesn’t require that a soil sample be taken or the use of additional lab equipment to analyze the soil. This makes it a popular choice since it requires less time and cost. It is also able to test soft clay found at a great depth where obtaining a sample can be difficult. The soil sample must be able to retain water throughout the test. The test is not suitable for unsaturated, highly permeable soil or on fissured clay. A easy test done on-site The vane test is done by drilling to a depth just above where you want to test the soil. The vane shear is attached to AWJ rods and inserted into the clay or silt. Using a torque wrench, the vane shear is slowly rotated and how much torque is required to shear the soil is measured. Certain situations may require variations of this test or that the test is repeated. Requesting technical support can save time and money. 35 FORDIA.COM Drilling is hard work. Fordia makes it easier.
