As such our publication’s content has consistently reflected our product and service development efforts. Despite a rather challenging past year, we pulled through unscathed and maintained our performance. We started 2012 with a bang when we signed the IPv6 MOU with DualStak Networks. We also lined up a number of strategic initiatives that will further strengthen our business operations. As in previous editions, PERNEC Corporation Bhd participated in one of the most important events in its calendar, the MSAM or Minggu Amanah Saham Malaysia organised by Permodalan Nasional Berhad. This year’s event was held in Sabah from 19-29 April. Thanks to the enthusiastic response from the Sabahan crowd, MSAM 2012 turned out to be the biggest fair ever since its inception 12 years ago with over 268,000 visitors attending the nine-day event. During this year’s MSAM, PERNEC announced its status as a premier developer of WiFi Solutions in the country. The event was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The MSAM fair has become an increasingly viable platform for PERNEC to introduce our new products and services to the public. Some of the new initiatives that we showcased were IPv6, PERNEC Green, PERNEC Katchi, helo Ads, heloNET netbook and PERNEC WiFi hot spots as well as our corporate social responsibility project – the he- Editorial Team Che Wan Esah Dafizeck Daud Afizah Azmi Hudda Mohd Adzhair Amaluddin Mohammad Norazreen Zainal loNET Community (hNC) programme. Through the hNC, we have been able to provide the exclusive helo English online learning programme to deserving students who show potential through specific engagement programmes with them. The objective of helo English is to help students improve their spoken, reading and writing abilities. There are many features in the programme that allow students to develop their language skills such as grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading expression as well as oral and written expression. The momentum of interaction between PERNEC and the public significantly increased after the launch of the hNC by the Prime Minister at last year’s MSAM. At this year’s event, our booth continued to be the main attraction especially among students. Our objective for hNC is simple and clear - we want to help develop students who are not afraid to explore their own ideas, develop new skills and nurture self-confidence through the use of technology. Here’s wishing you a good read as this issue brings you more news on the strides we have taken to make Malaysia a more digitally wired and informed nation. We must share this combined knowledge so we can find answers. We must break the barrier particularly against the sharing of tacit knowledge. Together we must invoke a sense of crisis due to a decline in business opportunities in a saturated market. We must create a sense of pro-activeness in addressing the turbulent market and create a sense of urgency in order to save the day. Pernecitizens must work together to contribute towards resolving business challenges under the current economic climate. This involves all of us and all touch points related in our daily activities. Innovation is about being more efficient. It does not necessarily need to be triggered by the management as innovation can easily be initiated by any individual. Normally, an individual who innovates out of passion will go the extra mile to see it through. It can also be triggered by a self-organising team in pursuit of operational excellence. Irrespective of being explicit or tacit, knowledge becomes obsolete. Therefore, we also need to create new knowledge to fuel innovations. We must also look into the future and anticipate changes in the market, technology, competitors and products. We should strive to innovate new things – preferably something entirely NEW and not an incremental innovation meant for our legacy and mainstream business. Innovation is best explained by the analogy of ‘fresh ways of thinking’. These can be achieved through strategic initiatives such as Innovative Creative Circle, Change Management and such. There are challenges to build innovative capacity. We need to provide equilibrium in visionary ideals versus chaotic reality. We need to create dy- namism for innovation and internalise the culture of innovation group-wide. Knowledge and innovation are central to competitive success. We will need to innovate to remain relevant in the market. Please note that every little piece of innovation and reinvention is going to add to the company’s ability to compete and grow in the long term. We will embark on this two-pronged approach. Traditional innovation for current mainstream business will be conducted by our Business Units while our approach on new innovations will be undertaken by the New Business Initiatives Division. Initiatives for innovation will be developed gradually. We need to create a space for ‘safe’ experimentation. We intend to create ‘small projects’ with minimum investments (so that in the event of failure, the cost is bearable), deploying the art of iteration and reiterations while inculcating the culture of continuous innovations. The company’s new agenda addresses the emergent market and this warrants us to risk failure because without it, I feel we will not succeed. The idea is to experiment, execute and consequently scale our programmes up to an equitable quantum. This would challenge the existing mental model to a new mental domain, a foreign matter to many of us. It would also require us to put more thinking as technoentrepreneurs. Nevertheless, we do not expect to get it right the first time. ”The future will belong to the people endowed with Knowledge”. Best Regards ABDUL KARIM SALLAM Group Managing Director 03 NADA PERNEC AUGUST 2012 n an environment where the only certain thing is the existence of uncertainties, we need to develop relevant skills and mindsets to cope. We must acquire the ability to break away from the past and move into new unchartered territories for opportunities. There is no one clear and simple answer to our current business challenges; the business environment is complex and highly commoditised. The telecommunications industry is going through a phase of saturation - mobile penetration exceeds 100 percent with almost 70 percent for broadband. The market size of infrastructure development has also shrunk. This however has created a window of opportunity for Over the Top (OTT) offerings than can be exploited over telecommunication pipes such as found in cloud-based applications. The explosion of broadband, mobile broadcast and OTT delivery is challenging the industry to embrace transformational changes as broadband and broadcast come together. The whole eco-system is becoming more complex with most of the impact coming from social media. Market dynamics are changing towards an emergent market and the future will belong to those who can somewhat predict it. For some of you who can recall, in my monthly message on ‘Read’, I shared the idea or concept behind the approach to use ‘knowledge as a competitive resource’. For PERNEC, the strength of our organisation lies in the intangible assets comprising explicit knowledge like technological knowhow, product design, marketing abilities, excellent customer engagement and to a certain extent, personal experience, creativity and innovation (tacit knowledge). We have tacit knowledge than spans the last 40 years. We must learn to create a balance between nurturing in- pernec payPoint WiFi hot spots changing our lives for the better 70% 04 NADA PERNEC AUGUST 2012 T he WiFi hot spots developed and maintained by PERNEC for their clients has helped the country continue to register encouraging economic trends in tandem with the robust growth of broadband WiFi usage. The latest published WiFi penetration rates show between 60 and 70 per cent of the population is digitally connected. PERNEC Group Managing Director Abdul Karim Sallam said this achievement was something PERNEC could be proud of, given it had indirectly contributed to this growth with its nationwide WiFi hot spots. With over 4,000 WiFi hotspots built by PERNEC, WiFi usage is expected to spur more opportunities. The company also installed a WiFi hotspot under its corporate social responsibility programme in Pulau Banggi, Sabah. Speaking of the economic benefits of using WiFi, Abdul Karim said that simple things like using wireless infrared sensors to count cars for signalchanging rather than waiting at timed 60% POPULATION lights could save billions in fuel costs while reducing the need for additional road construction by 20%-30%. What’s more, wireless collision avoidance detection in major intersections, for example, has been shown to save billions in health care and longterm disability costs. The potential of the local wireless broadband in day-to-day applications for machine-to-machine or internetof-things will far exceed the use of today’s Internet. The economics of wireless broadband is just starting, and there are new technology upgrades in WiFi that would place it significantly in the mobile eco system. Abdul Karim made these comments at the launch of the Celebration of PERNEC’s Achievement In Becoming The Premier WiFi Network Builder In Malaysia at MASAM 2012 on 29 April. The event was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin at the Kompleks Sukan Likas, Kota Kinabalu during the official closing ceremony of MSAM 2012. P ERNEC Corporation Bhd together with NEC Corporation of Japan organised a seminar to introduce the benefits of iNEC Cloud technology to a select audience of PERNEC’s business partners. Mr. Sinya Kukita, Chief Manager, NEC International Sale and Operations conducted the seminar that was attended by heads of IT from various customer companies of PERNEC. It was held at the Le Meridien Hotel in Kuala Lumpur in December last year. Speaking about the seminar, PERNEC Group Managing Director Abdul Karim Sallam said cloud computing was an important development in the ICT landscape, having evolved from a futuristic technology into a commercially viable alternative for companies in search of cost-effective storage and server solutions. At the seminar, participants were told that it has been forecast that by this year alone, 80 percent of Fortune 1000 enterprises would pay for some form of cloudcomputing service, while 30 percent will pay for cloud-computing infrastructure. While the technology has its fair share of drawbacks such as privacy and security concerns, the benefits would far outweigh the risks. Some of the inherent benefits of cloud computing shared with the participants were: Scalability: IT departments anticipating an enormous uptake in user load need not scramble to secure additional hardware and software with cloud computing. Instead, an organisation can add and subtract capacity as its network load dictates. Since cloud-computing follows a utility model in which service costs are based on consumption, companies pay for only what they use; Easy Implementation: Without the need to purchase hardware, software licences or implementation services, a company can get its cloud-computing arrangement off the ground in record time — and for a fraction of the cost of an on-premise solution; Skilled Practitioners: When a particular technology becomes popular, it is not uncommon for a whole slew of vendors to jump on the bandwagon. In the case of cloud computing, however, 05 NADA PERNEC AUGUST 2012 From left: Mr Takayuki Kano, Assistant General Manager, NEC Corporation, Mr Kukita, Mr Mitsuhiro Mikami, Manager, NEC Corp, En Norizal Mohd Tahir and En Karim. INFO & ACTIVITIES Seminar on benefits of cloud computing vendors like NEC Corporation have typically been reputable enough to offer customers reliable service and large enough to deliver huge data centres with endless amounts of storage and computing capacity; and Freeing Up of Internal Resources: By placing storage and server needs in the hands of an outsourcer, a company essentially shifts the burden placed on its in-house IT team to a third-party provider. The result - in-house IT departments can focus on business-critical tasks without having to incur additional costs in manpower and training. Furthermore, although there has been plenty of concern surrounding cloud computing, in particular its security risks, a lot of companies do not realise that many vendors rely on strict privacy policies, as well on sophisticated security measures, such as proven cryptographic methods to authenticate users. Abdul Karim added that companies could choose to encrypt data before even storing it on a third-party provider’s servers. As a result, many cloud-computing vendors offer greater data security and confidentiality than companies that choose to store their data in-house. Considering the powerful benefits of cloud computing, the main objective of the seminar was to enable a “hype-free” discussion on cloud computing and align participants to a common understanding of how cloud computing could be beneficial for their businesses. pernec telco BETTER PROSPECTS FOR PERNEC WITH SMALL CELL SOLUTIONS 06 NADA PERNEC AUGUST 2012 W ith the introduction of the ground-breaking small cell Long Term Evolution or better known as LTE, PERNEC can tap into opportunities in future mobile communications network growth. Announcing the availability of the latest mobile network telecommunication technology at MSAM (Minggu Amanah Saham Malaysia) 2012, PERNEC Group Managing Director Abdul Karim Sallam said small cell solutions offer an enhanced, cost-effective mobile network that enables operators to provide premium mobile services. Small cell solutions consist of a broad range of technology components high function processor with a volume of less than 10L, a weight of less than 10kg and an output power of 2 x 5W (MIMO). Furthermore, the base station can serve up to 200 subscribers, in spite of its small radius of coverage. The series also features advanced SON (self-organising network) for autonomous network configuration, optimisation and automated network management, which reduces time for deployment and enables telecom carriers to reduce their CAPEX (capital expenditure) and OPEX (operational expenditure). “Telecom carriers are working to boost capacity by introducing LTE technology and enhancing the efficiency of wireless capacity in response pernec telco 200 subscribers to the rapid growth in communication traffic accompanying the increased use of smartphones and tablets," Abdul Karim said. There is also greater demand for environments that ensure stable communications in areas where communication speeds are likely to fall due to heavy traffic or where radio waves are weak. Moreover, compatibility with multiple manufacturers' products in a single network facilitates the flexible construction and operation of base stations and results in high communication quality. LTE COMPACT WIRELESS BASE STATION WIRELESS FIBER VARIATION BY SMALL CELL SOLUTION High speed data communication To Small Cell Optimum enviroment for cloud/SaaS and application Automotion Quickly tailored Coverage building QoS High density cell Device diversitication/low consumption Attractive access way for your lifestyle 07 NADA PERNEC AUGUST 2012 that address connectivity and service management challenges faced by mobile operators. PERNEC’s vision of the LTE roll out in future mobile networks in the local market is based on the assumption that services and applications will demand higher throughput in both uplink and downlink. The compact all-in-one LTE base station system allows for a wide range of installation options in areas with limited space, such as rooftops and compact indoor spaces. “This series paves the way for more cost effective installation of small cell base stations, helps boost capacity and improves overall performance,” said Abdul Karim. The classes, held from 13-17 February 2012 were sponsored by the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) and organised in partnership with DualStak Networks Sdn Bhd and Nephos6 Inc. The first batch of trainees attending the IPv6 Forum Certified IPv6 Network Engineer Level 1 also known as CNE6 Silver class included participants from Celcom, Redtone, Jaring, OCE, Extreme BB, IMPACT, Packet-1, GITN, MAMPU, and Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA). The course featured, among others, back-to-back training sessions for both Level 1 (CNE6 Silver) and Level 2 (CNE6 Gold). The CNE6 Silver courses are intended for network and system engineers who need to understand the new features and operational characteristics of networks based on IPv6. The CNE6 Gold courses meanwhile are for enterprise network engineers to enable them to set up and configure IPv6 networks and associated services, and implement the migration of existing networks to support IPv6 in various architectures. These programmes were developed by the IPv6 Forum through its IPv6 Education Logo (v6eLogo) Programme to increase engineering quality by certifying solid curricula and recognising educated engineers. deployment in tandem with cloud offerings. Getting IPv6-ready pernec telco P T he driver for the push of the IPv6 agenda will not be the technology per se but the business drive. PERNEC Group Managing Director Abdul Karim Sallam said this at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with DualStak Networks and Nephos6, Inc. PERNEC through collaborations with its partners aims at becoming the prime mover for IPv6 as it views the migration from IPv4 to IPv6 as “inevitable” while believing that there will be a transition period of co-existence between the two protocols i.e. transition from pure IPv4 to hybrid IPv4/IPv6. There are three ways to enable IPv4 and IPv6 to coexist. The simplest is called dual stack. As the name implies, it is the creation of totally discrete and separate networks to handle each of the addressing schemes. Incoming packets are then examined and sent to the proper system. PERNEC’s partnerships with DualStak Networks and Nephos6 mark a significant development for IPv6 adoption in the region and will significantly ease the rollout of IPv6 in Asia. IPv6 adoption in Asia is anticipated to increase many times over and PERNEC together with its partners aim to be at the forefront of this explosion. 011 NADA PERNEC AUGUST 2012 ERNEC Corporation Bhd signed a strategic alliance with DualStak Networks Sdn Bhd and Nephos6 Inc to ride on the momentum of the anticipated demand for Internet Protocol version Six or IPv6-compliant solutions and hardware. The agreement was signed in Kuala Lumpur between PERNEC Group Managing Director Abdul Karim Sallam, DualStak Networks Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Lawrence E. Hughes and Nephos6 Inc chief operating officer Yurie Rich. Deputy Minister of Information, Communication and Culture Datuk Joseph Salang was present at the event. According to Abdul Karim, the main objective of the Memorandum of Understanding was to provide the highest level of service to clients, existing and potential, by combining resources and expertise to promote IPv6 in Southeast Asia. Under the terms, all members will co-operate efforts, combine skills, technology, resources and knowledge to promote IPv6 in Southeast Asia and undertake projects such as IPv6 education certification, transition planning and any other activities that members may mutually agree to pursue. The strategic partnership will provide the necessary expertise to organisations so they can establish a roadmap for migrations and the various options available to undertake the migration. Abdul Karim noted that the bigger bandwidth offerings by the cellular and fixed service providers provided the opportunity for more applications to be driven into the network. This would include the exponential growth of social networking and connected devices that would in turn create the push for more IP addresses and pressure to migrate to a cost effective IPv6 pernec paypoint PERNEC introduces its POC public telephone booth 012 NADA PERNEC AUGUST 2012 P ERNEC Paypoint Sdn. Bhd was proud to introduce its Proof of Concept (POC) public telephone booth at the Malacca International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh recently. The telephone booth utilises energy efficient components as well as recyclable materials. PERNEC PayPoint CEO Tengku Asmaluddin Tengku Arshad said proof of concept was a common idea in the business world as it was a means in which organisations demonstrate the commercial and financial viability of their products or services. The analysis would provide the basis for commercial production at a later stage. Tengku Asmaluddin added that the practice of innovation was not just about creating new products but about discovering completely new markets that met previously unknown and therefore untapped customer needs. He elaborated that in the age of Internet connectivity, the act of innovation became an even greater challenge, making the drive towards selecting and executing the right ideas and bringing them to market before your competitors did, more urgent than previously known. He explained that technology and control of quality and cost were not the only driving forces behind innovation these days. Creativity and the growth of the organisation towards a future state of competiveness were equally important. The POC public telephone booth is an innovation that can be replicated economically and satisfies a specific need in the marketplace. pernec corporation MINGGU AMANAH SAHAM MALAYSIA 2012 MSAM ENHANCES PERNEC’S PREMIER STATUS T housands of Sabahans got a rare opportunity to get acquainted with the wide range of products and services offered by PERNEC Corporation Bhd when the company participated in the Minggu Amanah Saham Malaysia (MSAM) 2012 in Kota Kinabalu recently.
