Dear Friend,
Happy New Year! This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of public
broadcasting in Rochester. In 1958 a group of educators, community leaders and
concerned citizens came together to form the Rochester Area Educational Television
Association (RAETA). They believed in the possibilities and the promise of public
television. They believed that television was a perfect tool to educate, inform and
inspire the largest possible audience.
We have strived over this half-century to keep alive the spirit of those pioneers. Over the years, WXXI
has grown from one television station to an organization that now serves the Rochester community with five
television channels and six radio services including Reachout Radio, our radio reading service (in partnership
with ABVI/Goodwill) for those who are visually impaired or print handicapped.
A lot has changed since 1958, but one thing has remained core to our mission – education. Every day WXXI
provides programs that stimulate and expand thought while promoting understanding of diverse community
issues. Services like Reachout Radio help bridge some of the challenges people face, while other innovative
programs spotlight remarkable individuals who have overcome challenges. For example, this month marks our
sixth year presenting, with Al Sigl Center, Dialogue on Disability: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz Community
Series. This week-long programming initiative, which kicks off Monday, January 14, is designed to stimulate
community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with disabilities. This partnership with Al Sigl
Center has yielded some amazing stories of courage and determination from across the country and across our
region. (You can learn more about this initiative on page 8, and I encourage you to visit WXXI.org/dod.)
I believe our founding board members would have been surprised and pleased to know how many WXXI
programs are seen across the nation. This month we are proud to present a new national television series. Biz
Kid$ is a program designed to teach young people about financial literacy and how to manage their own money.
With fun graphics, fast pacing and peer entrepreneurs, kids teach kids about money and business.
While Biz Kid$ is our newest program to hit the air, we’ve been producing educational shows for young
audiences for nearly five decades – since RAETA launched Assignment: The World (ATW) in 1959. Now the
longest running instructional program on television, ATW delivers news and current events in a safe environment
for children. This fall, it too will celebrate its 50th anniversary! Programs like ATW and Homework Hotline, our
live call-in show, still provide instructional programming to area schools, but today we also deliver educational
content over the Internet (so it can be more useful to teachers and students). It is our intent with Biz Kid$ that
it be utilized in the schools as well. We believe the real impact of the program will come from how it is used in
the classroom. With 49% of youth thinking they are more likely to become millionaires by staring in a reality TV
series rather than by learning how to budget and save wisely, the need for a show like this is apparent.
We’re looking forward to a great New Year filled with exciting anniversary celebrations, new productions
like Biz Kid$ and Taste of New York (our series about New York food and wine that will premiere this spring), and
as always – great television and radio programs that educate, entertain and engage. Please know that we are
grateful for your support, which helps make our work possible. Like the visionary men and women who started
RAETA, you know the value of your public broadcasting station. Thank you and again, please accept my best

Rap music, rocking chairs, candy, and custom skateboards
— at first glance, they don’t have much in common. Yet each of these represents the dreams and hard work
of a Biz Kid! You’ll find these business-savvy young people on the new series Biz Kid$, airing every Friday at
5:30 p.m., beginning January 11, 2008 and again on Sundays at 10 a.m., beginning January 13, 2008 on WXXITV 21 (cable 11). Through clever skits, comedy sketches, and messages from the kid hosts, Biz Kid$ teaches the
basics of saving, budgeting, investing, building a business and giving back to the community. Tune in with your
children and they can learn to be Biz Kids, too.
Produced by the team from the Emmy award-winning series Bill Nye the Science Guy, Biz Kid$ introduces
some amazing young entrepreneurs and philanthropists. You’ll meet Rebecca Charbonneau, a teenager who
fulfilled her dream of opening a candy store in her community and also managed to help revive the ailing business district at the same time. Skateboard designer and web site creator Jordan Wilsted and social entrepreneur
Ben Weymiller also share their stories. (Jordan launched two successful businesses based on his favorite
hobbies and Ben raised over $85,000 to provide rocking chairs for the hospitals in his community.)
Compelling adult stories are also included in some episodes. Chris “Kharma Kazi” Rolle’s story is one
motivating example. Abandoned as a baby, and then in and out of foster care, Kazi overcame unimaginable
obstacles. Through sheer will, determination, and the support of a youth program called Art Start, he rebuilt
his life. Today, he is a successful rap artist, movie producer, actor, and philanthropist. In 1991, Rolle founded
Art Start’s Hip-Hop Project, an after-school program that connects teens with music industry professionals to
produce their own albums. Using hip-hop as a tool to entice kids to participate, Kazi’s true mission is all about
social entrepreneurship, self-empowerment, and overcoming personal obstacles.
With only 10% of America’s youth graduating high school with any kind of instruction in personal finance,
this series is a must see! So, grab your kids and watch Biz Kid$ together. They’ll be sure to profit and you
might learn a few financial facts, too.

Just what is the elephant in the room?
What role has prayer
played in shaping
the development and
history of America?
A new two-part documentary,
Prayer in America, airing
January 6 and 13 at 11 p.m. on
WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), explores
contemporary debates about the role of prayer
through the lens of history. By asking rhetorically,
“How did we get here?” the show examines the
ways in which prayer has contributed to and
continues to shape the American experience.
The film is inspired by and serves as the
companion to Prayer in America (originally
published by Doubleday as One Nation Under
God: The History of Prayer in America by James
P. Moore, Jr.). In his highly original approach
to the history of the United States, Jim Moore
suggests that prayer has historically, and through
to the present day, been a significant influence on
the political, cultural and economic development
of the United States.
The documentary reflects diverse, and
sometimes conflicting, perspectives that inspire
viewers to examine the role religion and prayer
play in their personal lives, politics, and culture.

Did you know that the Rochester Americans have retired only two
sweater numbers in their history. The first was No. 6 in honor of Norm
“Red” Armstrong following his death from a fall in a construction accident in 1974 at age 35. No. 9 was later retired in honor of Dick Gamble
and Jody Gage. Gage broke Gamble’s team scoring records with the
Amerks during his long tenure with the team.

Meet Mark Grube, recently named WXXI’s
Employee of the Year. Mark started working for
Reachout Radio in 1996 and within two years was
producing and hosting his own weekly radio show,
What’s New (Saturdays at 9 p.m. on AM1370). In
1999, he joined the membership department as
the station’s Development Producer. Mark runs
the membership drives, and produces fundraising
spots. He is also host of Mystery Train, heard on
WRUR-FM at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Q. Why are membership drives so important
to the station? Aren’t there better ways to
raise money?
A. Just about everything seen and heard on
our stations grows directly from the generous
impulse of individual members of the audience.
The most effective way, by far, to reach those
members is to use airtime on TV and radio.
Drives account for 2% of that time over the
course of a year. There are other methods, and
we make use of them, but nothing else brings
it down to the level of one viewer or listener
connecting with the programs they enjoy.
Q. Radio membership drives vs. TV membership drives - which do you prefer and why?
A. I started in radio here and am still part of that
department, so I’d have to lean toward radio. On
the other hand, I’m not really a morning person,
so getting up at 4:30 a.m. is always tough. Either
way, the best part is hearing comments from
new members who are so glad they finally did
it. Pledge drives are not an annoyance for them.
They’re a welcome mat, happily crossed.
Q. How did you come up with the name for
your WRUR show Mystery Train?
A. It’s a Junior Parker tune (and a Jim
Jarmusch film) but I thought it summed up what
I was after for the feel of the show: a journey
where you didn’t know what was coming next...
soul, folk, funk, blues, jazz, zydeco, gospel, etc.
Q. What’s the last CD you purchased, or
song you downloaded?
A. I don’t own an iPod. I still miss LP’s, actually! But the last CD I bought was Aretha
Franklin: Rare and Unreleased. I was talking to
Scott Wallace (host of Rejuvenation on WRUR)
and he called it the “Holy Grail of soul music.”

DIALOGUE ON DISABILITY: The Herman & Margaret Schwartz
Community Series is a week-long programming initiative, beginning
January 14, designed to stimulate community dialogue about the perspectives and abilities of people with disabilities. At the heart of this initiative is
programming, broadcast on WXXI-TV and AM1370 that delves into the lives
of people with disabilities.
The centerpiece of the week is the premiere of two national television
productions. You’re Not Alone, airing Thursday, January 17 at 9 p.m. on
WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), follows a multicultural group of families facing the
relentless challenges of raising special needs children. The Teachings of
Jon, airing Thursday, January 17 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11),
is an insightful and humorous documentary by Jennifer Owensby about her
brother Jon, a 40-year-old man affected by Down syndrome. Jon has an IQ
of 20, is unable to talk and earns less than $13 a year — yet he has found
that his greater purpose is to teach others how to love.
Bob Smith, host of 1370 Connection and Elissa Orlando, host of
Healthy Friday — both heard on AM1370 and WXXI-FM HD2 — will focus
on disability issues on their programs the week of January 14. In addition,
AM1370 and WXXI-FM HD2 radio will broadcast two national productions.
The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal, airing Saturday, January 19
at 3 p.m. on AM1370, is based on Jonathan Mooney’s book of the same
name. Many kids with learning disabilities are medicated and segregated
during schooling. Some are forced to ride the “short bus.” A short bus
rider himself, Mooney recently bought a short bus and took it on a 35,000
mile journey across the US to seek out kids who shared this experience.
Musical Abilities, airing Saturday, January 19 at 3:30 p.m. on AM1370,
features interviews with singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt and Def Leppard
drummer Rick Allen, who explain how they adapted new techniques and
relearned how to play music after accidents left them with a disability.
Need to Know will also present a special Dialogue on Disability
segment on Friday, January 18 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11).
Other television programming includes: Today’s Man (1/8 at 10 p.m.), a
film by Lizzie Gottlieb who searches to understand her brother’s strange and
extraordinary life after he’s diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Mapping
Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita (1/15 at 10 p.m.) brings the stem
cell debate to the forefront and examines the constantly evolving interplay
between the promise of new discoveries, the controversy of modern science
and the courage of people living with devastating disease and injury. In
Rolling, (1/27 at 7 p.m.) three individuals in wheelchairs are asked to record
their day-to-day experiences.

AMERICANS
Following over 350 years of Jewish-American history, this three-part documentary series written and directed
by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker David Grubin examines the struggle of a tiny minority to make its way
into the American mainstream. Beginning with the first Jewish people to arrive in New Amsterdam in the 17th
century, the film offers a revealing portrait of a people who epitomize the immigrant experience. Even as they
have faced bigotry and rejection, they have embraced American culture while keeping alive their traditions
and heritage.
The first episode, airing Wednesday, January 9 at 9 p.m., covers the period from the 1700s, when the
first Jews arrive in America to the early 20th century, when more than two million Eastern European Jews,
fleeing poverty and oppression, emigrate. Gravitating to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, they develop their
own unique cultural institutions. The second episode, airing Wednesday, January 16 at 9 p.m, looks at the early
20th century, when Anti-Semitism is on the rise even as some Jews succeed in mainstream pursuits; in
the 1920s, Jewish immigrants come to dominate Hollywood. The final episode, airing Wednesday, January 23 at
9 p.m., presents the post-war period, when discrimination against
Jews in daily life begins to abate and Jews enter professions such
as medicine, law and banking in record numbers.
While the story of Jewish life in America is emblematic of
the American immigrant story, it is also a unique story of ongoing
discrimination and stereotyping coupled with some of the most
remarkable accomplishments in American history, the arts, commerce,
science and academia.

THE 21ST CENTURY
Jim Lehrer gathers influential Americans to draft a “Declaration of Citizenship
for the 21st Century” during the course of a four-day conference in
Colonial Williamsburg. The convocation brings together a diverse group of
approximately 50 influential Americans, including leaders in finance, education,
academics, sports, science, technology, religion, politics, law, journalism, the
military, health and medicine, visual and performing arts, social networking,
and auto racing, who offer their views on the rights and responsibilities of
citizens and government in modern-day America in both small and larger group
discussions. Their conversations are informed by presentations from a wide
range of American leaders, including musician, educator and activist Branford
Marsalis; playwright David Henry Hwang; historian Gordon Wood; columnist
and linguist John McWhorter; writer and social critic Howard Rheingold; and
history professor Carol Berkin.
WXXI was one of 12 cities selected to participate in the By the People’s
national conversation. On October 20, 2007 one hundred local citizens and
a panel of experts participated in discussions on healthcare costs, access
and quality at Rochester Institute of Technology. Footage from the Rochester
conversation will air during this broadcast.

MAPPING STEM CELL RESEARCH
Bringing the stem cell argument to the forefront,
Independent Lens discovers the constant interplay between the promise for new discoveries,
the controversies of modern day science, and
the courage of people living with debilitating
diseases. This program is part of Dialogue on
Disability, a WXXI and Al Sigl Center programming
initiative to stimulate community dialogue about
the perspectives of people with disabilities. See

Backstage Pass
With Christopher O’Riley, host of NPR’s From the Top,
in Rochester to record his show at the Callahan Theater at
Nazareth College on Sunday, January 20th, Julia Figueras
couldn’t resist inviting him into the Epstein Studio for the next
Backstage Pass. Mr. O’Riley will speak with Julia about the
upcoming Rochester performance, about the show itself and
share some of his piano transcriptions from alternative rock
band Radiohead, and singer-songwriter Nick Drake.

A TRIBUTE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Don’t miss the Choral Arts Society of Washington and guests
perform inspirational spirituals, rousing gospel and traditional
hymns associated with the Civil Rights movement. Guest
soprano Janice Chandler and the National Symphony
Orchestra, under the baton of Leonard Slatkin join in this live
concert from the Kennedy Center.
Known as the most popular annual classical
music concert in the world, this annual New
Year’s Day event is broadcast live from the
Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna.
Hosted by NPR’s Korva Coleman (pictured),
this year’s concert is conducted by Georges
Prêtre.

bands between two string quartets. The horsehair

From the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu on the beautiful island of Oahu, this week’s show features four
teenage soloists and an exciting youth opera chorus
from Honolulu.
From the Caldwell Auditorium in Tyler, Texas, this
week’s show features five terrific young soloists,
including two Texans. Three of these young soloists
play a new game called “Finish the Famous Musical
Phrase.”
From the Top surfs over to the Castle Theatre at the
Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Maui, Hawaii for an
exciting lineup of young performers, including two
five-piano ensembles from Honolulu, and a special

the Odds
Celebrated journalist Ellis Cose profiles the
incredible journey of Abass Hassan Mohamed.
Originally from Somalia, Mohamed managed to get the highest
grade in all of northeastern Kenya on his secondary school
completion exams, despite having spent much of his life in a
Kenyan refugee camp. He will soon begin his junior year at
Princeton University, where he is excelling — just as he has
throughout his life.
Cose takes listeners to Dadaab, the camp where Mohamed
grew up, to meet the young man’s teachers and parents. He also
visits with Mohamed at Princeton, documenting the incredible
transition he has made — from sharing a one-room shack and an
outdoor toilet with his entire family to succeeding at one of the
most prestigious and demanding universities in the world.
Mohamed’s story invites listeners to consider several issues:
educational mobility, the state of refugees and the prospects for
improving life outcomes for those without social advantage.

Hear Me?
Over the years, the relationship between African Americans and
Jewish Americans has been a relationship of common interests
and mutual recriminations. During the Civil Rights Movement of
the 1960’s the Jewish concept of “Tikkun Olam” or Repairing the
World was a driving force for young Jewish activists who went
to the South to register Black voters and link arms with Black
protesters. African Americans embraced these Jews as brothers
and sisters from another oppressed group. However, with the
rise of Black Nationalism at home and increased turmoil in Israel,
this hopeful period was followed by an angry break between the
two groups, resulting in racism and anti-Semitism. “Can You
Hear Me” looks at how these two cultures have worked towards
reconciliation through a rediscovery of their common humanity.
