Dear Friend,
I’ve just returned from the PBS Showcase, an annual meeting that highlights new public
television programs and services. I’m pleased to report that our WXXI KIDS schedule,
already among the best, most viewed children’s programming in Rochester, is about to
get even stronger!
Production is underway on a revival of a show that your kids (or perhaps you)
grew up with – The Electric Company. This “70’s Classic” is being redone to meet the
expectations of today’s younger viewers with music and cutting-edge dance routines. It will also have a focus on
Literacy, a topic we’re hearing a lot about in our community. Expect to see episodes of The Electric Company on
WXXI-TV early next year.
Literacy will also be a theme of another new children’s series, Martha Speaks, featuring, what else?
A talking dog! Modeled after a successful children’s book series, Martha will help spark an interest in reading in
our most impressionable viewers. And we’re not skipping science and math, either, as we prepare to welcome
Sid the Science Kid to WXXI this fall. Sid is aimed at promoting discovery and science among preschoolers.
Add to this our popular on-going series like Sesame Street, Curious George and WXXI’s own Biz Kid$
(a financial literacy series now airing on more than 300 PBS stations throughout the nation), and you can see why
PBS remains the most trusted choice in children’s television. I can also share that public television will be working
to fight the problem of childhood obesity, an issue that WXXI has been taking the lead on in our community.
In addition to a preview of new programs, we met the new host of Masterpiece/Mystery, Scottish actor
Alan Cumming. You may recognize him from his roles from Chekhov and Euripides, as well as appearances in
X-Men and James Bond movies (he also won a Tony as the emcee in Cabaret.) Alan will be introducing a season
that includes the conclusions of Foyle’s War, and the Inspector Lynley series and a spin-off of Inspector Morse.
Finally, many of you watched our new season of the Rochester International Jazz Festival last month,
leading up to the Jazz Festival itself this month. If you go to the Festival, you will see WXXI as we will be
recording more concerts at Kilbourn Hall, as well as footage in and around the Festival site itself. Also, please
join us at the Eastman Theatre on Sunday, June 15, as WXXI will be presenting screenings of our nostalgic
At the Top series from the 1970s. It features the Rochester appearance of such great jazz performers as the
Modern Jazz Quartet and Stéphane Grappelli, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Oscar Peterson. The free Jazz
Festival Film Series begins at 4:00 p.m. and we look forward to seeing you there!
By the way, if you became a member of WXXI during our May radio membership campaign let me welcome
you. If you renewed your membership during the drive, thank you! I’m pleased to report that, with your help, we
made our goal. That means WXXI can continue to bring quality programs from NPR and services so many rely
on (such as the recent outstanding, on-the-scene coverage of the earthquake in China). It again proved the value
of NPR, a service that has expanded its foreign bureaus and international coverage, while other networks have
been cutting back.
WXXI’s 40th Anniversary Auction wrapped up in May and was another success. I hope you had a chance
to bid and bring home a bargain while helping to support your local, independent public television and radio
stations! And, for those of you who attended the André Rieu event, it was nice to see you there. We were thrilled
to bring André to Rochester, and just as thrilled to hear so many people express what a great time they had.
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO

SPOTLIGHT ON A WXXI BUSINESS PARTNER
Rochester
City School District
“With literacy-based programs
like Sesame Street, Curious George,
Clifford, and WordGirl, WXXI
provides the perfect setting for
our message to parents and
families who want the best
for their children academically
and socially.”
—Jean-Claude Brizard,
Superintendent of Schools,
Rochester City School District
Established in 1841, the Rochester City School District serves 33,000
students in pre-K through grade 12 and 10,000 adult students.
Jean-Claude Brizard, Superintendent of Schools, described one of the challenges
facing the Rochester City School District: “Our pre-K program is rated the best in the
nation by independent evaluators. It’s offered free. We also want more parents to
take advantage of this tremendous opportunity to start their children off on the right
foot when it comes to learning, growth, and development. We know that children
enrolled in pre-K and kindergarten enter the elementary grades better prepared for
success in school. Our primary need is to reach parents of young children of the age
to enter pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, and to encourage them to register those
children for school in the Rochester City School District.”
When asked about partnering with WXXI, Superintendent Brizard explained, “As
we researched local media opportunities for connecting with our target audience of
parents of young children in the City of Rochester, we determined that partnering
with WXXI allowed us to directly reach our audience through the top-notch children’s
programming the station broadcasts. Our message dovetails perfectly with WXXI’s
educational children’s programming. Like us, WXXI is concerned with children’s
learning in the crucial early years; learning that actually makes a difference in the
likelihood of a child staying in school and graduating. Rochester views WXXI as the
station offering engaging programs that develop a love of learning in children that
carries into adulthood. WXXI provides the Rochester City School District with the
perfect venue for the messages we want to share with parents about the valuable
educational opportunities we offer their children.”

Julie Addair Levy
Education Training
Coordinator
Julie Addair Levy is the station’s PBS Ready
to Learn trainer and community liaison.
She is the education consultant for Homework
Hotline and the curriculum coordinator for
online education support services.
Julie also writes an education blog for
teachers and parents that can be found
at http://interactive.wxxi.org/.
Q. How do WXXI-TV’s children’s
programs help to prepare young
children for school?
A. WXXI-TV’s programming for children is
research based and contains multiple
elements that expose children to
essential early literacy and reasoning
skills. Letter and number awareness,
critical thinking and social interaction are
just a few of the vital skills that could be
developed by watching these shows and
that help prepare children for school.
Q. What kind of educational training
and outreach do you offer?
A. WXXI’s Ready-to-Learn program
offers workshops to parents, childcare
providers, and preK-3 teachers to
increase emergent literacy skills through
appropriate use of television as an
educational tool combined with books
and activities. Teacher professional
development offered includes workshop
series and online training for teachers
through PBS Teacherline.
Q. What’s your favorite PBS Kids show
and why?
A. I enjoy too many to pick just one favorite,
but a few that I like the most are Sesame
Street, Super Why!, WordGirl and Curious
George. Not only are these shows
entertaining and educational for kids,
they are just as much fun for adults to
watch and learn from as well.

WXXI Remembers Pat Andrus
with its Volunteer of the Year
WXXI posthumously named Pat Andrus its Volunteer of the Year during the
station’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner in April. Mrs. Andrus was a long-time
WXXI volunteer who passed away in August 2007 after fighting a courageous battle
against cancer. The Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year award, dedicated to the
late Charles (Chuck) Wise – a loyal WXXI volunteer for many years, stands as a
testament to Wise’s unwavering spirit of volunteerism.
Mrs. Andrus served on the Speaking of Women’s Health Steering Committee
where she played an active role in helping to generate awareness and increase
attendance for this national women’s health conference that WXXI brought to
Rochester in 2003. Her efforts resulted in a sold-out crowd at the conference for
the past two years. Mrs. Andrus was also very active in the WXXI Auction, and
encouraged her husband and children to volunteer at the station as well. Pat’s
husband Ed Andrus accepted the award on her behalf. In addition to the award,
WXXI adopted a tree at Highland Park in her honor.
Gifts of Stock
Did you know that you can make a membership gift to WXXI with appreciated stock?
A gift of stock entitles you to a tax deduction for the fair market value of the donated
stock on the date that the gift is made.
Making an electronic transfer of stock
is a simple process. It is very important
that you or your broker notify WXXI before
making an electronic transfer. WXXI needs
to know the name of the stock, the number
of shares and your name and address so
that we can credit the gift properly. We can
then give you or your broker the complete
transfer instructions.
A gift to WXXI is truly a gift to the entire
community. Nearly everyone is touched
in some way by the programming and
services we offer. We are happy to work
with you or your broker to help you invest
in our community through WXXI.
Please call Kathy Russell, Director of Major
and Planned Giving at 258-0319 for further
instructions on how to make a gift of stock
to WXXI.

ANYONE AND EVERYONE tells the
stories of families from Utah to North Carolina
and Wyoming to New York, all connected by a
common thread — a gay child. Produced by
first-time filmmaker Susan Polis Schutz (also
the parent of a gay son), it reveals a family’s
struggle and desire to accept a child’s homosexuality. The film features parents from a wide
range of religions, nationalities and political
leanings, all of whom discuss their initial reactions to their child’s coming-out. While some
showed unconditional support, others struggled
with their child’s sexual orientation, either fearing alienation from their extended family, their
church or their community. Some simply did not
understand the universal nature of homosexuality, and that it can affect anyone and everyone.
Whether Japanese, Cherokee, Mormon,
Catholic or Hindu, these families all share a
deep love for their children, along with a struggle for acceptance, both in their own home and
within society as a whole.

WordWorld is a colorful, word-rich place where
friends have fun and meet challenges through word
play. Each episode is a fun narrative built around a
wacky troupe of WordFriends, who are characters
first and words second. Shy Sheep loves to pretend;
cautious Frog is the brainiac and word “expert”;
impetuous Duck is still learning his letters; gregarious
Pig lives in the moment; pragmatic Ant is always on
the go; affable Dog is a WordFriend’s best friend.

THE CLEVELAND INTERNATIONAL
Piano
Competition
RUSSIAN PIANIST ALEXANDER GHINDIN
(pictured) won first prize at the 2007
Cleveland International Piano Competition.
From the opening rounds the 30-yearold Ghindin was the clear favorite, as
Donald Rosenberg stated in his coverage
for The Plain Dealer, “A full week before
he won first prize in the 2007 Cleveland
International Piano Competition… Russia’s
Alexander Ghindin leapt to the front of the
piano pack.” He clinched his victory with a
performance of Rachmaninoff No. 3 with
the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction
of Jahja Ling.
This Competition is held biennially over a ten-day period that begins with the
candidates performing solo recitals for the audience as well as an esteemed international panel of judges. Candidates are eliminated by vote of the jury until four
finalists remain. These talented individuals perform concertos with The Cleveland
Orchestra to determine the winner. The final rounds are held over a two-night
period at Severance Hall. The winner is announced following the final performance.
Tune in for breathtaking performances during an exhilarating marathon of music
– every Sunday night in June!
THE CLEVELAND INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION airs Sundays at

From the Top takes a trip down memory lane to
feature some of the best music and stories from our

already started medical school, a teenage cellist
from Kentucky, one of the finest teenage trombone
quartets in the country, and a young cellist with a
life like a screwball comedy.
From one of America’s best summer music venues,
the Aspen Music Festival, we’ll hear the inspiring

performed by an outstanding 17-year-old violinist.
This week’s program comes from the Virginia Arts

The traveling berry-picking seasonal farm laborers of Scotland and Ireland picked up songs and

Australia and New Zealand have thriving Celtic

CLASSICAL PROGRAMMING
DTV is already available, and starting in February 2009,
it will be the only way to broadcast in America. The new
system looks and sounds great, but changing over does
raise a few questions.
What exactly is DTV?
DTV can refer to either: the system for sending higher quality,
digital television signals over the air; the higher quality, digital
television signals themselves; or the TV set that displays digital
television signals.
Is DTV the same thing as HDTV?
No. HDTV, or high definition television, is the highest quality form
of digital television. Not all DTV is high definition.
What are my options?
If your TV receives its signal over the air with an antenna and
does not have a digital tuner, you have three options to continue
receiving TV after February 17, 2009:
1
DTV Basics:
What You Need to
Know About the
Transition to DTV
2
3
Purchase a TV converter box. A TV converter box will cost
$40.00 - $70.00. The Government is offering coupons to
reduce the cost of the boxes. To request coupons or learn
more about the coupon program, call 1.888.DTV.2009 or
visit www.dtv2009.gov;
Connect your TV to cable, satellite or another pay service; or
Replace your TV with a new digital tuner equipped TV.
A wide range of DTVs are available starting at $100.00.
What about digital cable, FiOS, IPTV and all that?
These TV sources depend on digital information and should not
be affected by the current transition to DTV, which affects over
the air broadcast television.
Is anything else about DTV different?
You’ll enjoy a higher quality picture and CD quality sound.
You’ll also be able to view program information from your
TV. Depending on the channel and show, your DTV tuner or
converter box might display information describing the show
and the TV schedule. You also may have read about “multicasting.”
That’s a technology that allows a station to send multiple
channels at the same time. In addition to WXXI-TV (cable 11/
DT21.4), WXXI multicasts three additional digital channels:
WXXI-HD (cable 1011/DT21.1), WXXI-World (cable 524/DT21.2),
and Create/ThinkBright (cable 433/DT21.3).

Hidden Kitchens
Narrated by legendary country singer Willie Nelson,
Hidden Kitchens Texas is a lively, illuminating hour of stories about
experiencing Texas through food. All told by people who find it, grow
it, cook it, sell it, celebrate with it, and write about it, the program also
features Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Dallas-born actress Robin Wright
Penn. The hidden kitchen stories unfold against a soundtrack of soulful
Texas music that conveys a deep sense of time and place.
Hidden Kitchens Texas presents several wild and moving tales
about the state, including cowboy kitchens, oil barrel barbeques, ice
houses, oystermen on Galveston Bay, church suppers, a car wash
kitchen in El Paso, the tamale lady at Fuel City in Dallas, a restaurant
hidden down a driveway in Fort Worth, NASA’s space kitchens, and the
first barbeque pit on the moon.
Hidden Kitchens Texas airs Saturday, June 28 at 3 p.m. on AM1370/HD91.5-2

AMERICA ABROAD:
Holy Diplomacy
THE VIDEO GAME
VIOLENCE DEBATE
Almost 3 out of 4 Americans consider it a worthy goal to do something
to temper the violence in our media, yet violent movies, television
and video games are extremely popular. Do violent games, like the
recently updated Grand Theft Auto series, along with other violent
entertainment, chip away at our sensitivities about violence and
impact our notions about conflict resolution? There are authors and
academics who defend the presence of violence in the games rated for
adults, and question the strength of the research studies that suggest
that exposure to violent entertainment correlates with aggression and
desensitization toward violence. On the other side, there are those
who decry the violence, believe the negative effects research to be
true and call for tighter restrictions on violent game sales and content.
Tune in to hear from both sides of the conversation.

The Catholic Church is one of the world’s
longest-standing institutions, and throughout
its history has played a unique role on the
global stage. The Church figured prominently
in the fall of communism and contributed
to solving conflicts across the globe. Holy
Diplomacy travels to the Vatican to examine
the inner workings of the Holy See’s foreign
policy machinery, and to Colombia, where the
Catholic Church is attempting to build peace
in a troubled country.
