AMERICAN GRADUATE—LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN
COMING UP:
Intelligence Squared US: Does affirmative action on
campuses do more harm than good? Affirmative action, when
used as a factor in college admissions, is meant to foster diversity and
provide equal opportunities in education for underrepresented
minorities. But is it achieving its stated goals and helping the
population it was created to support? What impact will this have on
high school graduates looking to attend college? Airs Sunday, May
4, 2014 at 9 p.m. on AM1370 WXXI Radio & wxxi.org/listen.
WXXI is dedicated to building
awareness of the national and
local issues that have led to an
alarming dropout rate and to help
our community find solutions to
ensure a greater number of
graduates in the future.
Intelligence Squared US: Is the future of the university
online? Does the traditional classroom stand a chance? Will
online education be the great equalizer, or is a campus-based
college experience still necessary? More clicks fewer bricks?
Airs Sunday, May 11, 2014 at 9 p.m. on AM1370 WXXI Radio

three parts on consecutive Tuesdays beginning May 13, 2014, on WXXI. The three episode series tells the story of Wes
Moore’s search for answers to some of the most difficult questions related to returning from war. Moore’s journey takes him

many – find a new mission.

 Leave it to Beaver - A growing number of scientists, conservationists and grass-roots environmentalists have come
to regard beavers as overlooked tools when it comes to reversing the disastrous effects of global warming and
worldwide water shortages. Once valued for their fur or hunted as pests, these industrious rodents are seen in a new
light through the eyes of this novel assembly of beaver enthusiasts and “employers” who reveal the ways in which the
presence of beavers can transform and revive landscapes. Using their skills as natural builders and brilliant hydroengineers, beavers are being recruited to accomplish everything from finding water in a bone-dry desert to recharging
water tables and coaxing life back into damaged lands. Airs 5/14 at 8-9 p.m.
NOVA - http:/pbs.org/nova/ - School year re-record rights.
 Escape from Nazi Alcatraz - Airs 5/14 at 9-10 p.m.
 Bombing Hitler’s Dams - Airs 5/21 at 9-11 p.m.

Nazi Mega Weapons - http://pbs.org/program/nazi-megaweapons/ - Nazi Mega Weapons recounts Germany’s engagement in
World War II from a unique perspective, uncovering the engineering secrets of iconic megastructures, telling the stories of the
engineers who designed them and revealing how these structures sparked a technological revolution that changed warfare forever.
Airs 5/14 at 10-11 p.m. School year re-record rights.
Escape from a Nazi Death Camp - October 14, 2013 was the 70th anniversary of an event that shook the Nazi party to its core. In
east Poland, at the remote Nazi death camp of Sobibor, 300 Jewish prisoners staged a bloody break out. To mark the anniversary,
this film travels back to Sobibor with the last remaining survivors to reveal their extraordinary story of courage, desperation and
determination. The film uses brutally honest drama-reconstruction and first hand testimony to reveal the incredible escape story.
The multi-layered plot unfolds like a Hollywood blockbuster – from the last-minute change to the escape plan forced by and
unexpected arrival of a train load of SS soldiers, to the systematic luring of individual camp guards to separate locations and
different, highly creative deaths, yet every terrible and inspiring moment of this story is absolutely true . Airs 5/20 at 9-10 p.m.
School year re-record rights.
Hitler’s Favorite Royal - Hitler's Favorite Royal is the extraordinary but little known royal story of the British prince who became a
convicted Nazi. Prince Charles Edward was Queen Victoria's youngest grandchild. Brought up at Claremont House and educated at
Eton until he was 14, Charles Edward was forced by Queen Victoria to take up the Dukedom of Coburg in Germany after a series of
unexpected deaths of uncles and cousins. Transformed overnight from a British Prince to a German Duke, the course of his life was
altered in ways he could never have imagined as he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Narrated by Oscar-winner
Tilda Swinton Hitler's Favourite Royal features interviews with one of the Duke's grand-daughters who had never spoken publicly
about him before. Airs 5/24 at 5-6 p.m. School year re-record rights.
D-Day 360 - D-Day was a logistical effort on a scale never seen before or since. On the day itself, 14,000 planes dropped 23,000
airborne troops behind German lines, and 5,000 ships delivered 30,000 military vehicles and 160,000 soldiers onto the beaches.
Once on shore, the troops had to negotiate six million mines buried in the sand, 500,000 fearsome beach obstacles and hundreds
of miles of barbed wire, while dodging the shells and bullets fired by half-a-million German defenders. This film takes advantage of
LiDAR technology to re-create the landscape and allow viewers to switch effortlessly between the macro and the micro – pulling
back for the pig picture and zooming in to a close-up of a single soldier on the battlefield. Airs 5/27 at 9-10 p.m. No re-record
rights listed.

Illustration Contest: Win $300!
Specials:
On Saturday, April 26, The Little
Theater hosted an event centered
on a film called “Jodorowsky’s
Dune.” A cult documentary from an
indie underground director.
Carnegie Hall Spring For Music with the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, singers from the
Eastman School of Music Opera Department, and the EastmanRochester Chorus perform a concert version of Howard
Hanson’s Merry Mount at Carnegie Hall in New York City on
May 7. WXXI is proud to present a live broadcast of this concert
– Carnegie Hall Spring For Music with the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 7:30
p.m. on Classical 91.5
The short version is this film tells
the story of the best sci fi movie
never made. One of the things that
really excites people about the film
is its concept art – spaceships,
aliens, characters, architecture, you
name it – all made in this futuristic
yet retro, mildly hallucinogenic
style.
This opera in three acts was written by American composer,
conductor and music educator Howard Hanson, who led the
Eastman School of Music from 1924-1964.
As a special offering for the event, we’re opening an illustration
contest to artists to come up with a Jodorowsky’s Dune-inspired
piece. It could be anything space-y/Dune-y – aliens, spaceships,
whatever.
Performers include: Richard Zeller, baritone; Sara Jakubiak,
soprano; Charles Austin, bass; Christopher Pfund, tenor; Keith
Brown, baritone; Ashley Hibbard, mezzo-soprano; Samuel Krall,
baritone; Anthony Web, tenor; Matthew Valverde, tenor; Joshua
Ooms, baritone; Nicholas Kilkenny, bass; Migle Zaliukaite,
mezzo-soprano; Trevor Cook, baritone;David Gleichman, var;
Anna Bekker, mezzo-soprano; Adam Daughton, boy soprano;
Caitlin Glasonbury, child soprano; Bach Children’s Chorus of
Nazareth College; Eastman-Rochester Chorus; Michael Christie,
conductor.
The staff’s favorite piece will win $300, and will also get the
artist’s name, website, etc. and art piece on a Little Theatre preshow slide for a month (a $1,200 value) and will also get their
design printed on a line of limited edition t-shirts.
Here’s the fine print: designs need to submitted as an
electronic file to pbwayner@gmail.com. Files should be at
least 800 kb, but bigger is always better. We want these to
look good on the screen after all, so highest resolution
possible is appreciated.
Contest entries must be received by Monday May 5th at
noon.

We’ll be putting all the finalists on our website, thelittle.org, and
we reserve the right to use these images as promotional tools for
the film.

American popular music from Stephen Foster to Stephen
Sondheim. These weekly "radio essays," illustrated by
recordings, won the 1994 George Foster Peabody Award for
letting "our treasury of popular tunes speak (and sing) for itself
with sparkling commentary tracing the contributions of the
composers and performers to American society." The Peabody
citation called Fascinatin' Rhythm "a celebration of American
