STUDIOONESALONROCHESTER.COM It is possible to have healthy, beautiful hair with sustainable products. Owner & Stylistwww.DowntownRochesterMI.com 5 Letter from the Director I t has been a busy start to the year. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, there is a lot of activity downtown with the construction of two parking platforms underway. The East Street Parking Platform will be completed by the end of June, with construction on the west side platform completed before we flip the switch on The Big, Bright Light Show this year. The addition of these two parking platforms will make it that much easier to come and enjoy downtown. And speaking of enjoying downtown, I’m pleased to report that last year’s most popular promotion, the Rochester Explorers Club, is returning to downtown again this year. The original concept was simple – to create a program that would encourage families to get out and explore all that our downtown has to offer. So when we kicked it off at Sidewalk Sales last year, we were hoping for a few hundred participants for our first year. By the end of Sidewalk Sales, we had 788 little explorers signed up and ready to roll. I can’t even explain how much we loved seeing everyone all over Rochester – dipping their toes in the Paint Creek, touching a fire truck at the Fire Hall, visiting the playground and so much more. And the response from the explorers and their parents was overwhelmingly positive and always centered around the same theme. People thanked us for creating a promotion that allowed them to spend quality time with their children, engaging in fun, free activities right in their own backyard. So with feedback like this, how could we not do it all again?! So we’re expanding this year, offering 31 days of activities. A few of your favorites will be back, but we’re hard at work coming up with new ideas so it will truly be an adventure for you and your family. And knowing us, I think we’ll have a few surprises in store for you, too! Check out the article on page 27 for all the details. We’re already off to a great start this year – and we can’t wait to see you downtown! 6 Kristi Trevarrow, Executive Director Rochester DDA www.DowntownRochesterMI.com InTown The Downtown Rochester Magazine SPRING/SUMMER 2015 Produced by the Rochester Downtown Development Authority 308 1/2 Main Street Rochester, Michigan 48307 248/656-0060 • Fax: 248/656-1954 www.DowntownRochesterMI.com http://www.facebook.com/DowntownRochester http://twitter.com/RochesterDDA http://www.pinterest.com/dtownrochester DDA STAFF Kristi Trevarrow, Executive Director Kristi@DowntownRochesterMI.com Nancy Voges, Marketing Coordinator Nancy@DowntownRochesterMI.com Stephanie Hellebuyck, Events Coordinator Stephanie@DowntownRochesterMI.com Design: Quill Communications Photography: Mitch Warde Stylist: Maureen Follis PSD BOARD OF DIRECTORS Cathy Daldin Jeffrey Franklin, Secretary Suzette Louise Linda Lucaj, DDA Liaison Mary Kaverley Patrick Mulrenin, Vice Chairman Tiffany Piggee-Taylor Alan Smith, Chairman PROMOTIONS COMMITTEE Robert Elnicky Linda Gallaher Hillary Heacock Sheri Heiney Stephanie Hellebuyck, DDA Events Coordinator Sue Keels Christina Licari Linda Lucaj, Chairperson Amber Luciano Tami Salisbury Alan Smith, PSD Liaison Marion Tobkin Kristi Trevarrow, DDA Executive Director Nancy Voges, DDA Marketing Coordinator Janice Weaver Sara Whedon What’sHAPPENING Things to do in and around Downtown Rochester 2 MAY DOWNTOWN ROCHESTER FARMERS’ MARKET OPENING DAY Every Saturday, May 2 – October 31 Corner of East Third & Water 8:00 am – 1:00 pm Join us for the opening of the 16th season of the Farmers’ Market! Main, 248/656-5066, mainstreetdeli.rocks , Celebrating 25 Years of Business . It all started when she was 13 years old, washing dishes at her parent’s restaurant. From there, she rapidly garnered experience that would become the foundation for her next endeavor. At just 23, she took all her combined experience and opened Main Street Deli to peruse her curiosity where it led her. Now at 43, she’s working hard to make Main Street Deli more than just a place to get tasty food, although it does that very well. A heart for people, Linda has always looked for ways to build relationships with the people who visit the deli. She wants you to feel that sense of welcoming, of everyone knowing your name and being happy to see you. Customers are more than an order, they’re friends in the making. Linda Lucaj When you stop by and have a few minutes, ask her about Jerry - it’s a story to warm your heart! ~ written by Jennifer Grant You’ll need: • • • • • 10-12 oz. fresh spinach // washed + cleaned 4 large fresh grilled chicken breasts 1 c. whole walnuts // gives AMAZING texture 1 red pepper, thinly sliced // healthy + colorful red grapes, large bunch // beautiful color + burst of flavor For the caramelized onion: For the dressing: • Walnut Balsamic Vinaigrette • • • 2 large red onions // Why not try red? 3 T. clarified butter 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar Make the dressing by mixing 1/2 c. roasted walnut oil, 1/4 c. balsamic vinegar, 4 tsp. Dijon mustard and adding sea salt to taste. Or sub your favorite vinaigrette. Pomegranate is excellent, too! 1. Sauté the onions with the butter until translucent and beginning to caramelize (10 min). Add the sugar and continue to sauté (10 min). Add the balsamic vinegar. 2. While the onions are cooking grill the chicken. 3. While the onions and chicken are cooking mix the dressing ingredients. 4. Assemble the salad ingredients. Add the warm caramelized onions. Add the grilled chicken. Drizzle with dressing. This hearty spinach salad will wake up your senses and put you in the mood for spring! www.DowntownRochesterMI.com 25 tween scene Tweens have a unique style all their own! 1 1 3 2 Dynomighty Stash Bag, Washi Tape Mighty Case & Recycled Change Purse Cockeyed Sock Company (inside South Street Skateshop) 410 Main, 248/651-0555 2 The Puffin Classics Collection Talulah Belle 307 Main, 248/453-5054 3 ‘Inspire Me’ Marker Paper & Graphik Line Painters Green’s Art Supply 429 Main, 248/651-3900 4 Roller Blades by Mongoose The Funky Frog Children’s Resale Boutique 433 Main, 248/656-1937 5 Moai Statues of Easter Island by Nanoblock Froggy’s Toy Stop 114 E.
