The Ruins Of Modernity:
A Darwinian Nightmare
In the “modernity” of the early 20th century, artists used
images of ruins to depict a breakdown in society. Today, we
have our own images of ruins: photographs of marine and
land habitats that are now at risk. This course provides an
ecological reading of Darwin’s great masterpiece, the Origin
of Species, that prompts us to ask the following questions:
Has the natural world been irretreviably damaged by
human beings? If so, what kind of world will we leave for
our grandchildren? The text for this course is a selected
edition of the Origin of Species, available for purchase at the
Parksville VIU campus.

Italian Immigration To BC: 1858-1970
Good Bugs/Bad Bugs
Italian emigration has been described as the “largest exodus
ever from on European nation”. Driven by poverty and
desperation, Italians went to wherever in the world there
was a need for men with strong backs who would work
for low wages. They were called “scabs” by labour unions,
“undesirable” by the federal government, and “enemy aliens”
by the RCMP. Their story in BC mirrors the history of the
province.

The Art Of Photography
Who Knew Writing Could Be Fun!?
There will be a practical component in this course – the
basics of all cameras and how they need to be used to make
artful images, but the how is less important than the what.
The goal of the course is to motivate an attitude toward
composition and technique that opens the door to artful
photography – photography that you would be happy to see
in a frame and hanging in a prominent location in a public
space. A working knowledge of how to use your camera is
recommended.
Afraid to put pen to paper? This course will focus on the
process of writing and the pleasure in hearing other’s stories.
There will be no editing advice! Try this user-friendly
workshop. By writing in a safe, non-critical environment
you will avoid the “editor-in-your-head” and discover you
have something to say. Supplies required.

discussion will focus on a selection of his earlier novels and

Beyond Mini-Bridge: A Very Basic
Introduction To Bidding
NEW
The course is intended for people familiar with mini-bridge
(“bridge without the bidding”), or who played bridge in the
past and are considering taking up the game again. It will
offer a very basic introduction to the American Standard
bidding system, and will teach the earliest steps in the
bidding process. Because the course assumes familiarity
with bridge terms and many aspects of how the game is
played, it is unsuitable for absolute beginners.

NEW
At the beginning of the First World War, the poet-soldiers
who rushed to the trenches were educated in literature at the
universities of Great Britain and Europe. A hundred years
later, we venerate their war poems as definitive of poetry
for the “modernity” of our recent past. We also have images
of violence, brutality, and destruction, technologically
immortalized on our behalf. Is there a difference? In 1931,
the League of Nations invited Einstein to correspond with
another thinker of his choice on a topic of his choosing.
Einstein chose Freud on the topic of war. In January 1933,
their correspondence was published in the form of a
pamphlet under the title Why War? When Hitler came to
power, two months later, circulation was banned. Only 2,000
copies were printed in English, most of which were lost
during the war. The text for this course is Why War? A copy
of the text is available online in a pdf format. A printed copy
of selected readings from the text is available on request.

Paint, Politics, And Persuasion
Safe Driving For Seniors
This course will examine the reciprocal relationship
between selected works of art and the historical and
political milieu in which they were created. It will look at
how historical events motivated and shaped the creation
of art and how, in turn, art sometimes attempted to
influence and advance political and ideological agendas.
The 19th century selections will focus on the responses
to revolutionary changes; the 20th century selections will
focus on reactions to war.
An informative seminar on driving issues, preparing for reexamination, and how aging affects driving.
