Start off your day at Eagle Run which offers marked trails along the AuSable River that go from level to gently and moderate rolling hills. Continue onto the Highbanks Trail.This footpath begins at Iargo Springs and continues 6.5 miles to Sidtown, passing along the way the historical place of Lumberman’s Monument. Hikers, Skiers and Snowshoers will travel over the same ridges of the sandy high banks that loggers used to roll their timber into the river.Trails are ungroomed in the winter months. Reid Lake Trail Area consists of 12 miles of trails. Adventurers will find a large beaver pond, many marshes and bogs. Back country skiers will enjoy the well-marked trails. Hoist Lake encompasses 22 miles of trails which offer a unique chance to climb a ridge and perch on the crest to take in the panoramic view. This quiet sanctuary sits amongst 10,600 acres creating the finest backpacking, back country skiing and attractive remote campsites. Corsair Skiing and Hiking Trails are renowned for their 44 miles of groomed trails nestled in the Silver Valley. Where the AuSable River meets Lake Huron you can view all types of Gulls, including California, Icelandic, Glaucious and Blackback; not to mention Caspian Foster, plovers and ducks. Not far away the former Air Force Base has turned into vast grassland. You may catch a glimpse of Grasshopper and Savannah Sparrows, Bobolinks, Horned Lakes, American Pipits and Kestrel. Tuttle Marsh is home to nesting Osprey, Marsh Wrens, Bitterns (American and Least), and many Warblers including the Golden Winged. While Clarke’s Marsh boasts the most productive Eagle’s nest in the area along with numerous marsh birds. Our area also supports a Kirtland’s Warbler habitat and the lower AuSable is an "Important Bird Area" for the wintering Trumpeter Swan. With over 10,000 acres, the area’s steep rolling hills provide beautiful vistas. 2 Reid Lake Foot Travel Area Established as a non-motorized recreational area, the trails are located on gently rolling terrain. The area is excellent for fishing and is open throughout the year. 3 AuSable Vista Recognized as a National Forest Scenic Overlook, this vista offers a spectacular view of Alcona Pond and the AuSable River Valley area. It is also a stop on the Jack Pine Wildlife Viewing Tour. 4 Sturgeon Point Lighthouse Built in 1869, the 70’ lighthouse is still in operation and features restored light keeper’s quarters and a maritime museum. Located five miles north of Harrisville on Lake Huron, the museum is open daily 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from Memorial Day through the color tour season. (989) 724-6297. 5 Iargo Springs Located on the River Road Scenic Byway, this site, considered a holy place by Native Americans, offers a breathtaking view of the AuSable River Valley from a 30’ high observation deck. For the adventurous, walk down 294 steps and enter a mystical place where underground springs come together and form cold water streams. Walk along the elevated boardwalk and enjoy the serenity. 6 Highbanks Hiking Trail The Highbanks Trail is a 7-mile trail that starts at Iargo Springs and ends at Sawmill Pointe Campground. The trail follows the AuSable River and enroute you will pass the Canoer’s Memorial, Lumberman’s Monument and see spectacular views of the AuSable River. 7 Canoer’s Memorial The monument is a memorial to all paddlers who challenge the AuSable River past, present, and future. The site offers a beautiful panorama of the AuSable River Valley and a chance to see eagles soaring below. 8 Lumberman’s Monument A U.S. Forest Service Interpretive Center honors the lumbering era. Spectacular lookouts across the AuSable River Valley, a gift shop, handicap trail, lumbering artifacts, displays, programs and a magnificent 14’ bronze statue. Site of the Snowbox Derby. 10 AuSable River Queen Take a paddle wheel boat trip down the AuSable River and enjoy the summer and fall scenery. Eagle Run Cross Country Ski and Nature Trails Just west of Oscoda on River Road, Eagle Run provides groomed trails for skiing and hiking along the AuSable River. Mountain bikes are permitted on this trail. 15 Clark’s Marsh Wildlife Area 14 Clark’s Marsh is a collection of still woodland ponds and old growth forest. Its flat grassy trails make it a perfect place for visitors to view rare native wildflowers & wild birds. 16 AuSable-Oscoda Historical Museum Situated on East River Road, in downtown Oscoda, the Historical Museum offers free admission. For information on the area call 1-877-8-OSCODA. 19 Tuttle Marsh Wildlife Area Deer, fox, coyote, muskrat, beaver, otter, weasel and many species of birds can be found in this 5,000 acre enhanced wildlife management area in the Huron National Forest. 20 Corsair Skiing and Hiking Trails Nestled in the pines of the Huron National Forest, 44 miles of groomed trails are offered for winter cross country skiing and summer nature hiking.
