MILLICENT HILLEBRAND 1910
- 2OO3
On 1Sth April this year Millicent Hillebrand passed peacefully away at the age of g3. Our
"Millie" was a stalwart of Leicester Civic Society. Membership Secretary from 1977 to
1987, Millie was the voice of the member militant and she did not hesitate to defend the
principles on which the Society is founded. Millie was no respecter of persons when she
suspected "wet" views were being expressed on the quality of the built environment. A
long time resident of Gotham Street in South Highfields Conservation Area, Millie was an
indefatigable champion of inner urban areas. Active in the Conservation Area she was
also an enthusiast of Radio Leicester and a parlicipator who frequently had a cross word
for Morgan Cross on the "CrosstalK'programme.
Always keen to defend her "corner" in committee she was not above offering to "box the
ears" of younger members. However she will be fondly remembered for her great
kindness and her often outrageous sense of humour, together with an uproarious laugh
that served to deflate the pomposity of several consecutive chairmen!
The funeral service was held at the Tudor House Chapel, Welford Road on 7th May and a
donation to the British Heart Foundation was made in lieu of flowers at Millie's request.
Rest in peace good and faithful friend.
