Harkey (R-Dana Point) Diane L. Harkey (R-Dana Point) was elected to the California State Assembly in 2008 to represent the 73rd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Dana Point, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Oceanside, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Aliso Viejo. Harkey, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, graduating Cum Laude from the University of California, Irvine, has enjoyed a successful career spanning 30 years in Corporate Banking and Finance. She has been actively involved with public service throughout most of her adult life. Appointed by the County of Orange to the Architectural Review Board in 1987, Diane took an active leadership role in advocating for the incorporation Dana Point in 1989. Since then, she has been a part of countless grassroots efforts for issues affecting local communities and self governance. As Mayor for the City of Dana Point, Diane successfully implemented a balanced budget and a reserve policy for the City. She championed efforts to reform government by promoting business development, encouraging regional planning and cooperation to save taxpayer dollars, increasing citizen involvement by promoting new candidates for public office, and working towards common sense solutions for growth and development. As a representative of the people, Diane has spent much of her time promoting cost effective transportation solutions to improve mobility in the region. As a Mayor, Councilmember and liaison to regional committees, she fought hard to ensure transportation dollars are allocated to regions of South Orange County and Northern San Diego County. Diane has been a strong advocate for working with local elected officials and municipalities to develop thoughtful solutions to shared concerns. Diane has been married to her husband, Dan, for twenty-five years. Together they have a daughter, Jaclyn, a recent graduate of USC’s Marshall School of Business. 4 To: All NAIFA Members and AHIA Members From: NAIFA AHIA Government Relations Life Insurance? Then Keep Reading Members of Congress will be in recess during the next few weeks - that means they will be back home looking for feedback and input from constituents who take the time to speak up. The recess (August 3 to September 4 for House members/August 10 to September 7 for Senators) offers opportunities to influence lawmakers on the critical issues of health care reform and how to pay for it. Even if you have recently communicated with your senators and representative, we ask you to do so again during the August Recess. There are millions of voices in this debate and NAIFA members must keep encouraging our lawmakers to consider thoroughly the total consequences of the proposals before they vote on something we'll all regret. Speak Up NAIFA is asking you to seek opportunities to speak face-to-face with your two senators and representative. • SCHEDULE a meeting in the lawmaker's office and bring other members of your local association and business clients to the meeting. • ATTEND Town Hall meetings, they are also a great venue to connect with your senators and representative. The Issues: • Health Care Reform • Paying for Health Care Reform NOW is also the time to engage your clients in the Health Care Reform debate, especially your small business clients. Let them know that the House Tri-Committee bill contains a surtax on successful small businesses that would range from 2% to 5.4%. Additionally, Congress is looking at other “creative” ways to pay for “reform,” including the taxation of life insurance and annuity products. Lastly, please report the results of your meetings to apic@naifa.org. It’s critical that your NAIFA staff learn what your lawmaker told you. For more information: Contact Matthew Laptew at (703) 770-8154. 5 + What’s At Stake…….. If you are one of the over 160 million American workers receiving healthcare from your employer, you should know your coverage may be at risk. Congress is debating the future of healthcare and many lawmakers want to create a new government bureaucracy that could replace your workplace healthcare. We should build on healthcare that works for millions of Americans and cover the more than 45 million who still need coverage. We must also address rising costs to make healthcare affordable for everyone. More government bureaucracy will only create more problems, not solve the ones we have. Congress should build on the current employer-sponsored system, with subsidies for those who need them, to cover more Americans and ensure continued access to quality, affordable healthcare.
