Another General Meeting of
Volunteers is in the books. The
enthusiasm, excitement and
camaraderie that this event
brings each year is truly
amazing. We have such wonderful volunteers at TSRHC,
and to bring so many of you together in one room, at the
same time, makes for quite an incredible experience. To
hear your stories and to know the amount of time each of
you has dedicated to supporting the patients and patient
families makes me proud to be part of this volunteer
community. I am truly honored to represent each of you this
year as president of the Volunteer Executive Committee
and I thank you for your commitment and dedication.
I would also like to extend my congratulations to our
two award winners from this year’s meeting: Bill Marble is
our Sampson Wiener Volunteer of the Year and Bruce
Neustadt is our Paul Taylor, D.D.S Trailrider Award
recipient. These two gentlemen have made outstanding
volunteer contributions to the hospital and I would like to
thank both of them for everything they do. If you see Bill
and Bruce around the hospital, be sure to congratulate
them.
I am looking forward to a great year at the hospital.
There is so much to be excited about, particularly the yearlong celebration of TSRHC’s 90th birthday, and I am
counting down the days to the festivities on Thursday,
October 13, at Treasure Street! (Coincidentally, that’s my
birthday, too.) I hope to see many of you there.
In closing, I would like for each of you to know that I
am always available for you. If you have suggestions,
ideas or just want to grab a cup of coffee and chat … I am
open to your thoughts. You can contact
me via email at: Loren.Koziol@ubs.com
or on my cell at 214-808-3252.
Kind regards,
Volunteers Saddled Up for the Bike Rodeo
On Saturday, April 9, the Rotary Club of
Dallas partnered with Texas Scottish Rite
Hospital for Children (TSRHC) to host the
10th annual Rotary Club of Dallas Bike Rodeo
and Child Safety Day. The bike rodeo gives
children from around the Dallas community the
opportunity to learn about safety in a fun,
family-oriented environment. The children met local heroes, including
firefighters, police officers and emergency responders; and
participated in many activities, including a bike rodeo skills course. The
hospital’s Volunteer Services department provided 46 volunteers for
the event, who assisted with the bike raffle, traffic sign bingo, face
painting and many other assignments that helped make the event a
great success.

Farm and Ranch Day
Thanks to all the volunteers, including mother/daughter teams from
the National Charity League, who helped make Farm and Ranch Day on
Saturday, May 21, a rousing success. More than 1,600 patients, family
members and friends from the community converged at Reverchon Park
to enjoy great weather, entertainment and the importance of Texas
agriculture in our everyday lives. Participants enjoyed a variety of fun,
hands-on activities including face painting, hat decorating, and snacking
on popcorn and snow cones. We also appreciate the Dallas Park and
Recreation Department, the local 4-H Clubs and the Southwest Dairy
Museum, who each provided support to make the day run smoothly.

New Volunteer Services Summer Intern
Each summer, TSRHC invites a college student to intern in the Volunteer
Services department and experience firsthand the important work TSRHC
volunteers do, supporting and encouraging patients and families who come
through the hospital’s doors. This year, we welcome Jennifer Brooks.
Jennifer is not new to TSRHC, having spent two summers in the Junior
Volunteer program when she was in high school.
“I am really excited to be back. I love the culture and the fun-loving
environment that the volunteers work so hard to provide for patients and
families,” Jennifer says. During her time at TSRHC this summer, Jennifer will
be assisting David Kim with the Junior Volunteer program and helping make
the annual summer book sale a success. Jennifer attends Texas Christian
University and plans to graduate in December with a degree in marketing. Be
sure to say, “Hello!” to Jennifer and welcome her back to TSRHC.

Services intern.
Award Recipients
Samson Wiener Award
The Samson Wiener Volunteer of the Year Award was
awarded this year to William “Bill” Marble. The award is
named in honor of Samson Weiner, a 33rd-degree Mason
who served Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
(TSRHC) for more than 40 years, initially as a volunteer
reading to young patients and eventually as vice-chairman
of the TSRHC Board of Trustees. The award was
established in his name in 1985, and is presented annually
to an individual or group who has demonstrated exemplary
commitment to TSRHC patients through meritorious
voluntary service.

2011–2012 Volunteer Executive
Committee Officers
Samson Wiener award recipient Bill Marble is
congratulated by TSRHC staff, Loren Koziol,
and his wife, Kate, also a volunteer.
Mr. Marble is a former business executive who works
with the hospital’s Property Management department.
Although he began volunteering as recently as January
2010, he has contributed 873 hours to TSRHC. Mr. Marble’s assistance and business experience saved the hospital
thousands of dollars; and he gave invaluable advice on a project in the department. Although Mr. Marble was unable to
attend the General Meeting, with the help of his wife and fellow hospital volunteer, Kate, the Volunteer Services
department managed to surprise him at a special lunch held in his honor to present the award.
Trailrider Award
This year’s Paul Taylor, D.D.S., Trailrider Award was
presented at the General Meeting to volunteer Bruce
Neustadt. This award was established in 2004 and named in
honor of Paul Taylor, D.D.S., who served on the hospital’s
dental staff for 40 years and continued to support the dental
service after his retirement in 1986. The award is presented
each year to a volunteer whose tenacity and long-standing
commitment to the hospital merits recognition.
Mr. Neustadt has volunteered at TSRHC for more than
22 years and has provided more than 4,400 hours of service
to the hospital. He is an evening volunteer who is always willing

recipient Bruce Neustadt is joined by

many events, including the Dallas White Rock Marathon, the
Katy Trail 5K, Treasure Street and TSRHC night at the
Mesquite Championship Rodeo. Mr. Neustadt also provides tours of the hospital and promotes it at every turn. He is
a Mason who always shares information about hospital events and donor opportunities at his Masonic Lodge, and he
is a great recruiter of new volunteers. He also works to improve things for patients and volunteers, and served on a
committee that chose the new volunteer uniform in 2008. Mr. Neustadt embodies the long-standing commitment that is
the hallmark of the Paul Taylor, D.D.S., Trailrider Award.
Loren Koziol,
President
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) is
pleased to announce the 2011–2012 Volunteer Executive
Committee Officers. The Volunteer Executive Committee
is charged with developing new and additional ways to
support the hospital’s volunteers, so they may best serve
the patients and families of TSRHC. They serve as a
volunteer advisory board for Volunteer Services, represent
the hospital at local and state volunteer functions,
participate in hospital fundraising activities and represent
the volunteers at hospital special events.
Loren Koziol (president) is a five-year volunteer,
serving primarily Wednesday evenings and as a special
events volunteer. He has served in several other capacities
on the Volunteer Executive Committee as president-elect,
treasurer, recruitment and orientation chair and special
events chair. Loren is employed by UBS Financial Services
Inc. as a financial advisor.
Karen Kantner,
President-Elect
Ken Hill,
Secretary
Audra Rowell,
Treasurer
Karen Kantner (president-elect) has volunteered in the
TSRHC clinics for three years and formerly worked at
the popcorn stand. She has served on the TSRHC
Executive Committee as treasurer and volunteer activities
chair. Karen is a long-time community volunteer with a
professional background in medical technology. She loves
combining volunteer service with her medical experience.
TSRHC. This year, the hospital
recognized Lew Kravetz and
Jason Shelton, who have each
volunteered more than 12,500
hours at TSRHC. Mr. Kravetz
works in the plaster clinic, cast
room and wherever he is needed.
He has volunteered at the hospital
every Christmas Day since 1975,
when he began volunteering. Mr.
Shelton handles volunteer uniforms
and also works in the cafeteria
greeting patients, staff and
volunteers. John Speirs, Jr., was
also thanked for giving 7,500 hours
of service to the hospital and Mary
Lou Magee reached the 5,000
hour mark this year.
During the meeting, volunteers
elected new officers for the
Volunteer Executive Committee.
Loren Koziol was elected
president, and Karen Kantner was
voted the committee’s presidentelect. Ken Hill was elected
secretary, and Audra Rowell was
voted committee treasurer.
Ken Hill (secretary) is a five-year volunteer who has
served Thursday evenings and as a special events
volunteer. In addition to his role as secretary, Ken has
served as the special events chair. “It is a privilege to
volunteer at TSRHC because we always take away more
than we can possibly bring,” says Ken, an architect with
NADC Architects LLC.
Audra Rowell (treasurer) has volunteered as a tour
guide, and with Creative Capers and special events during
the six years she has been connected to TSRHC. She
has also served as secretary, recruitment and orientation
chair and Junior League of Dallas liaison to the TSRHC
Executive Committee. Audra is employed by Irving
Independent School District as an elementary gifted and
talented coordinator.
