We are gearing up for the Community Wide Holiday Giveaway (CWHG). This year we have made some major changes to make the process so much easier on the participating businesses. This is the busiest time of the year for our retail members and we needed to look at ways to simplify the process. Ticket rolls will only have one ticket and will be given to the customer at the same rate (1 ticket for every $10 spent). The business will not have the other ticket to worry about. That means they will not have to tear apart or keep tickets in the little box or bags, and so will not need to turn in tickets to the Chamber each week. The Dec. 19th drawing will be a lottery style drawing with ping pong balls. The numbers will be pulled randomly from a hopper. We will have to gather up all the outstanding rolls of tickets right before the drawing night to make sure we don’t have an undistributed ticket number announced. We need your support to make this the best CWHG ever! Remember that your business can be a “sponsor” of the CWHG event without participating in the ticket distribution. The cost is only $250 per business. This program is in place to help draw shoppers into our members' doors. In 2012 we distributed over 1,400,000 tickets with each ticket representing $10 in sales. The purpose of the CWHG is to promote our retail businesses and the “Shop Ponca First” campaign. It allows our businesses to show appreciation to their customers by giving them the chance to win thousands of dollars in “Santa Bucks.” This is a fantastic way to drive customers into your store. Since the prizes are given in “Santa Bucks,” they will only be able to be cashed in at our participating businesses. This keeps shoppers in Ponca City and keeps them spending at our member businesses. The CWHG kickoff is November 2nd with the big drawing being held the evening of December 19th! Be sure to listen to one of the 5 local radio stations to hear the winning numbers. This Christmas I pledge to shop small, spend local, eat local, enjoy local, and support the local Ponca City businesses that support me and my community. I hope you will too. By shopping Ponca first you are helping to not only keep our retail base strong but also to keep those sales tax dollars in Ponca City. And remember to ask for your CWHG tickets at participating businesses beginning Saturday, November 2. Call the Chamber Office today at 765-4400 if you want to participate. There is still time to sign up. Don’t forget Chamber Bucks! They make a great gift item! Volume 35, Issue 10 www.poncacit ychambe r.com Page 7 ONE STEP FORWARD, ONE PERCEPTION BACK David Myers—Ponca City Development Authority I received something from a Ponca City business over the summer that started out by referring to a time years ago when “…area businesses were booming.” I cringed. Perhaps today is not 2008, the high point for the Ponca City economy, but it’s very close and getting closer. Perhaps this particular business, call them Company A, can be forgiven for not knowing this since their clientele came disproportionately from another company that greatly reduced their workforce in Ponca City over the past ten years. As a result, Company A has indeed suffered. Company A, however, is the exception, not the rule. The truth is that area businesses are, for the most part, doing well. Those that have adapted to the changes in the economy, in general, are reaping the benefits of their course change. There are no guarantees, however. There are certainly businesses that see the changes and have made course corrections yet continue to struggle due to a variety of reasons. In some extreme cases, the market has simply said that the demand for their product or service no longer exists while for others, they have recognized the need to change but may have guessed wrong on how to change. This is not unique at all to Ponca City. The very businesses that continue to lag here are, in general, lagging elsewhere. This is not about what “the merger” did. It’s about what a new market wants. Running a business is difficult in the best of times. It requires very long hours, creativity and above all commitment. Studies have consistently shown that the number one attribute for a successful business is persistence. Not giving up, putting in the hours, making changes until you find your niche, etc.. This diligence characterizes successful small businesses nationwide, including Ponca City. If, however, that persistence is doing the same thing over and over and not changing to meet market demands, that persistence will not be rewarded. You have no doubt heard the old saying that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. This certainly holds true for businesses. Consumer behavior has changed dramatically, perhaps exponentially over the last ten years. That this has coincided with the same time period in Ponca City where we have dealt with “the merger” is really just a coincidence. Make no mistake, there were and perhaps still are a few businesses that relied heavily upon that old company for their bread and butter. There was pain and some businesses had all or a majority of their customer base on the South side of South Street. For many, there was no adapting to the loss of those customers and the economy, and by this I mean the global economy not just the Ponca City economy, simply was not creating this type of job anymore. But the overall economy, including the Ponca City economy, did replace the jobs. They were in other industries and at other locations but they were replaced and replaced at comparable wages. The problem for some is that the new jobs were not held by their old customers or by people who were likely to become their customers. You can likely see it in yourself. You are probably not buying products or services the way you used to do, (or have modified at least some of your behavior in this regard). We may want everyone to get a loan from the local bank which invests here, rather than from a symbolic tree online. We may lament that many people are not buying their insurance from the local broker but instead from a Gecko in cyber space but unfortunately many are doing just that. Today, going out to eat is becoming synonymous with “grabbing” dinner, not a special occasion. As a chamber member, you no doubt support buying local. That’s good. It may sound like just a political slogan but it does not have to be. I found when I moved here from California ten years ago that I actually saved money by getting my insurance through a local insurance broker. I got my home loan locally for the same rate as the online alternative. I got good deals on cars here and so forth. Perhaps in the economy today you can save money online and everything is DIY (do it yourself). This may not be true but it is up to each business to make sure their customers know what their advantages are. How you communicate with your customers has, of course, also changed dramatically. A business that has not changed how they communicate with their customers will simply not be in business long enough to worry about it. Page 8 www.poncacitychamber.com Volume 35, Issue 10 September Business after Hours hosted by Parker Pest Control, Inc. Parker Pest Control, Inc. hosted the September Chamber Business after Hours on Tuesday, September 24th. The evening was also a celebration of Parker Pest Control's 50th anniversary! I mentioned Ponca City as a possible destination in one of these meetings and everyone agreed that a trip to our close neighbor could be fun and informative. I contacted Rich Cantillon with the Ponca City Chamber, and was overwhelmed by his welcoming and hospitable response. Rich got us really excited about our trip. Ponca City wildly exceeded our group’s expectations! Beginning with Rich and the Ponca City Chamber, every person we came in contact with was equally friendly and happy to welcome us. Ponca City is a cheerful community, and it is evident to us that it is really easy to live in such a cool place. We spent our planning time at Marland Mansion. David Keathly was a superb host, and we appreciate the time he dedicated to making us feel at home. Daren Wilson, owner of Albright Insurance, hosted us at his cabin on Lake Ponca during our first evening. Additional Ponca City Chamber members joined us, including Natalie Fraser with Lindsay Manufacturing; Barry Bickle with Eastman National Bank; Bill Coleman with Team Radio; Austin Unruh with the Ponca City Chamber; John Robertson with the Blackwell Chamber; and Janet Purdy with the Tonkawa Chamber. The friendliness of this group made a huge impression on our leadership team from Tulsa. We equally enjoyed the beautiful views of Lake Ponca. Your community is fortunate to have such a beautiful piece of nature right in your backyard. On our final day in Ponca City a few of us decided to play golf while the rest of the group headed to the airport to eat some of Oklahoma’s best Mexican food. While the golfers ate lunch, we ran into even more of what we now call ‘some of the friendliest people in Oklahoma’. One such couple was Danny and Carey Head. We explained to Danny that each of us has his products in our pantries and refrigerators, so we felt as though we were meeting a celebrity! Danny and Carey gave us Head Country golf balls, which turned out to be good luck since I hit the first hole-in-one of my life with one of those balls. I will forever have a Head Country golf ball in my office! The friendliness continued throughout the rest of our day. Everyone we came in contact with shook our hands, introduced themselves and offered to be helpful to us. As we drove out of Ponca City that evening we all realized that we only thought we knew a lot about your community. Our short trip emphasized to our entire team how wonderful Ponca City is and how lucky you are to have people like Rich, Danny, Carey, Daren, Natalie, David, Barry, Bill, Austin and other community leaders we never had the chance to meet during our short trip. We have all vowed to tell everyone we come in contact with just how special Ponca City is, and we will never forgot our journey to your beautiful and wonderful community.
