Greenville Regional Hospital Annual Report 2014
Reflections
Annual Report / 2014
Dr. Boyd E. McCracken
1923 - 2015
Greenville Regional Hospital’s Board of Directors and
staff are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Boyd E.
McCracken and would like to offer their condolences
to his family, friends, and patients.
As one of the founding fathers of Greenville Regional
Hospital, Dr. Boyd E. McCracken was vital in the
formation and architectural design of the hospital,
in addition to serving as the first president of the
hospital board of directors in May of 1956. As the board
president, he helped the hospital apply for many federal
and state funds, organized fundraising efforts, and
oversaw the budget of $800,000 for the construction
of the 32 - 40 bed Edward A. Utlaut Memorial Hospital.
With his wife, Julia, as one of the organizers of the Utlaut
Hospital Auxiliary, Dr. McCracken also supported the
development of the auxiliary. Throughout his years as
a practicing physician, he treated many thousands of
patients and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the hospital in 2005.
Today, we remember the impact that Dr. McCracken
made on the hospital by “Boyd’s Bears,” which are teddy
bears given to Greenville Regional Hospital’s young
patients to provide them comfort and warmth. The gift
of the bear makes a very fitting tribute to a man who
spent his life providing warmth, comfort, and care to the
Greenville community.

GRH TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR PATIENT SAFETY INITIATIVES
State program recognizes GRH employees for a job well done
Illinois Provider Trust (IPT) is a
hospital professional/general liability
program serving Illinois hospitals and
their affiliated physicians, including
GRH. On an annual basis, IPT
offers a Risk Exposure Adjustment
Program (REAP). This program is an
opportunity for hospitals to receive
a credit (total of 7%), which results
in financial savings, but it can also
cause the hospital to receive a debit
(total of 16%), which means an
additional cost to the hospital.
Each year, IPT reviews recent claim
trends. This information is collected
and broken down into criteria based
on clinical issues. Part of this year’s
REAP focused on the obstetrics,
surgery, and emergency departments.
Two other areas for review, which
touched many departments, were in
relation to Intravenous (IV) access
and Pressure Ulcer Prevention.
Many departments played a role

CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE
Measures of Success
Greenville Regional Hospital employees improved the quality of care we provided our patients, and thus, earned the
hospital $90,000 through the Medicare Value Based Purchasing (VBP) incentives program. As a hospital, we earned
improvement points for our efforts in these four categories:
1. Outcome-Measures: 30-day mortality rates for Heart Attacks, Heart Failure,
Pneumonia, Patient Safety Indicators, and Central Line Blood Stream Infection rates.
30%
2. HCAHPS Survey: Patient perception of their hospital experience.
3. Core Measures: Providing appropriate care for our patients with
Heart Attack/Chest Pain, Heart Failure, Pneumonia, Surgery, Stroke, and
preventing our patients from developing blood clots during their stay.
4. Medicare Spending: How much it costs us to provide care to our Medicare

In 2014, we were extremely proud
to be recognized by the Illinois
Hospital Association (IHA) for our
low early elective delivery rates —
those that occur before 39 weeks
gestation and are not triggered by a
medical need or spontaneous labor.
At the invitation of the IHA, GRH
participated in a presentation to
state health care organizations
(including the Illinois Department
of Public Health, Blue Cross, the
Illinois Hospital Association and
member hospitals) to show how a
small, rural hospital can meet and
sustain low rates. A corresponding
storyboard, illustrating this
accomplishment, was highlighted
on the organization’s web site.
The IHA also commended GRH for
the strides we’ve made in reducing
patient re-admissions. This
achievement was highlighted in

COMMUNITY IMPACT
More than half of Greenville Regional Hospital’s operating expenses – over $18.1 million – consist of salaries and benefits for
its employees. This equates to 375 jobs for the community, including a $14.3 million payroll; funds that turn over an average of
five to six times before leaving the community, resulting in an estimated $74.4 million impact on the local economy.
