Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina Pine Knoll Shores North Carolina BULK RATE U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 5 SALTER PATH, N.C.28575 Annual Report -2012- THE YEAR IN REVIEW 2012 BOARD OF MANAGERS Penn Perry Executive Director For Trinity Center, 2012 was a bit better year than 2011. Income in both Conferencing and Sound to Sea Residential was up from the prior year, and total income was up almost $90,000 from 2011. For a not-for-profit hospitality business struggling through a difficult recession, that $90,000 makes a huge difference. I believe our increased income results from hard work on the part of Trinity Center’s staff, both our income generators and our service providers. We solicited in new and smarter ways for our business, and we offered Trinity hospitality to all our guests. Trinity Center staff members continue to amaze me with their dedication to this place and its many ministries. In fact, increased employee expense from 2011 to 2012 is mostly due to more of our staff members going full-time and taking advantage of our benefits package. I am glad to see this trend, even though it results in greater expenses for the center, for I believe that an invested staff is a better staff. Trinity Center continues to remain in a precarious position financially. We still do not make enough in net revenue to cover the costs of operational upkeep of this facility on an island off the coast of North Carolina. We are struggling to attract new business in a very competitive hospitality market. We are attempting to attract that new business primarily through our growing web presence. We continue to refine our new website, we have increased our presence on Facebook, and we now have a regularly updated Trinity Center blog designed to highlight opportunities for retreat at Trinity Center. Attracting new business is only half the battle; we must then offer new groups high-quality Trinity hospitality to encourage repeat business. Our lack of a sizable endowment fund and the challenging economy necessitates that I solicit for grants and donations on a regular basis. Donors continue to be generous to Trinity Center. Contributions to our Annual Fund actually grew slightly in 2012. I find this fact amazing, given that the Diocese of East Carolina is now actively engaged in the public phase of a capital campaign to endow Trinity Center. Ms. Anna Fay Campbell (Chair) The Rev. Episcopal Church Hodgin Farmville Grifton NC NC Anne Sneed Greenville NC Jeff Glick Cuyahoga Falls Oh A Sincere Thank You To All Our Generous Donors. Your Thoughtfulness Is Truly Appreciated. Trinity Center should be putting slightly more than two hundred thousand dollars a year into property just to fund depreciation. The Trinity and Beyond Capital Campaign has a stated goal of six million dollars for Trinity Center. The first million dollars will be used immediately for critical maintenance projects, with the other five million dollars held in trust by the Episcopal Foundation so that yearly disbursements might help with future operational maintenance. As the capital campaign moves through its public phase, Trinity Center is already regularly requesting from funds gathered for critical maintenance projects. We have added a new section to our annual report because of the Trinity and Beyond Capital Campaign. The section highlights the $257,625 disbursed in 2012 from funds gathered for critical operational needs. In addition, we have listed projects completed because of those funds. We hope to attract new business as we continue to renovate our facilities. We hope to have a sizable endowment fund that will disburse yearly for planned operational upkeep of our beloved center. Such an endowment would also help us survive the major weather events that are sure to happen on this island. As I walk property and see the work made possible by the generosity of our many donors, I know that others care about Trinity Center just as I do, and I cannot but be hopeful for Trinity Center’s future.
