Save Percentage Subtract goals allowed from shots on target to determine saves. Then divide saves by shots on target. A save is awarded to a goalkeeper only if a shot otherwise would have gone into the goal. A goalkeeper cannot receive credit for a save on a cross. The Way It Was The more things change, the more things stay the same, at least as it pertains for the Yavapai College soccer program. The Roughriders have been consistent in its approach and the results have reflected that over the past twenty-five years. The Roughriders have been ranked in the national poll every week since the first poll of 1990, including 79 times as the number one team in the country. Below is the 1990 NJCAA men’s soccer poll prior to the national tournament. During their 1990 post-season run, Yavapai defeated Glendale (Ariz.), Hesston College (Kan.), defending champion St. Louis-Flo Valley (MO), Ulster (NY), Herkimer (NY) and Passaic (NJ) en route to their first national championship. Did you know? Michael Pantalione’s first day on the job at Yavapai College took place on 8-8-88; 88 was the high temperature in New York City and on that same day, the Cubs & Phillies attempted to play the 1st night game ever at Wrigley Field before rain postponed the event in the 4th inning. 30 ★★★★★★★ The back four defense, led by sophomores Chris Hunter, Dirk Petersen (#11), Evan McNiel and Jeff Bendwald, were the key factor in an effort that posted 15 shutouts and not allowing more than one goal in a match throughout the 2008 season. First Playoff Starting Lineup (Oct 27 1990): Front Row—Bell, Bilsback, DeNardis, Orona, Macias, Washington. Back Row—Cassler, Kozul, Robson, Rico, Corona. The number of players that have worn the Roughrider jersey, not counting all-time legends Boom Boom Bartosa and Chick Corvette, is 442. Abrego is the first alphabetically, and Zimmermann the last. Forty players have surnames beginning with B and forty other players starting with the letter M. Ten families have brothers that played for Yavapai including Ball, Bendawald, Dickey, Fimbrez, Garcia, Hardie-Jordan, McMillen, Rico, Salazar and Savage. In addition, a combination of a father and two sons played as well. That was the Rico’s, leading all Yavapai families in goal scoring with a combined 59 tallies. Numerous Yavapai players not related, but have the same surname include—Arellano (2 players), Becerra (2 players, both won national titles in two different centuries), two Bells (not including Coach Bell), four Brown’s (not counting Browne), Diaz (4 players), Espinoza (2), Flores (3), Garcia (5, four were members of national title teams), Gordon (2), Heredia (2), Hughes (2 players; trust me, not related), Hunter (2), Johnson (2), Jones (2), Kelly (2), Macias (2), Martin (3, although it may seem like four considering the same person played on both the 1997 title team and returned as a key member of the 2003 title team), Miranda (2), Nelson (2), Nixon (2), Pacheco (2), Rivera (2), Smith (yes, only two), Sterling (2, see Hughes), Turner (2), Wallace (2), White (2), Williams (2, see Sterling), Wright (2, see Williams). Green’s father played basketball for Yavapai and the duo of Brooks and Stringham shared a few common denominators. Many players had hyphenated last names. Surnames that begin with “al” often refer to the place where someone’s ancestors were born. This was the case pertaining to Al-Raqaya. Beside the two McMillen’s, five other surnames starting with Mc suited up for the Roughriders including McArdle, McDonnell, McKee, McKenna and McNiel in addition to one given name, McKay. Oh, there were a couple of O’s, O’Farrell and O’Sullivan. The state of Texas, site of three of Yavapai’s seven national championships, is represented with given names including Dallas, Tyler and Austin. No one with the last name beginning with U or X have represented the program. And, of course, there’s only one Cassler. That’s Marvin. All of these players have one thing in common. The front of their jersey read—Yavapai, which means winning (YAVA) soccer (PAI).
