What’s to come in 2016 – A look at upcoming projects in the Near Westside
By Maarten Jacobs
It is quickly shaping up to be another big
year for the Near Westside. With lots of
great ongoing programming, new projects,
tons of community events, and new partners,
2016 will bring more exciting progress to the
neighborhood. Below are just a few things to
keep an eye out for this year:
NuVal coming to Nojaim
Bros. Grocery Store
Have you noticed some new signs at Nojaim
Bros. Grocery Store that say “NuVal” on
them? Wondering what they are? NuVal is
an innovative new way to help you figure out
what are the healthiest food items available
in the store, within each food category. NuVal
scores every item in the store from 1 to 100
(100 being the healthiest) and encourages you
to “trade up” by eating foods that are similar
to those you eat now, but have a higher score
(thus being healthier for you). Keep visiting
Nojaim’s to learn more about NuVal, to be
part of in-store food demonstrations, and to
find healthy foods in each isle. NuVal will
be rolled out in the entire store throughout
the year with frequent events, giveaways,
and free information on how to eat healthy
without impacting your budget.
Weekly Community Events
For the last six months, many of the local
service agencies have been getting together
to plan a community calendar of events,
aimed at hosting 50 events in 50 weeks.
These events will range in location and
topic, but will all be hosted in the Near
Westside and will be open to the public with
the goal of creating fun, positive, and safe
opportunities for our neighborhood. All of
the events will be part of a larger “Take Back
the Streets” initiative (look for more info on
this next month) that will be well publicized
throughout the community.
New Salt Quarters Artist
in Residence
Two news artists moved into the Near
Westside at the Salt Quarters Artist in
Residence space in January. Patty Ortiz,
coming from Texas, is an amazingly
talented artist and curator. Her work
this year will focus on the concept of
“work” and will be hiring people from the
community throughout the year to assist
her with different art installations. Justin
Mastrangelo is our local artist in residence,
coming to Salt Quarters from Oswego, New
York. Justin is a skilled artist with a
passion for silkscreening. Justin will spend
much of his residency hosting silkscreening
workshops and “drink and draw” events
aimed at inviting people into Salt Quarters
to meet one-another and to create artwork.
Community Theater Space in
Case Supply Building
At the end of 2015, the NWSI was generously
funded by Senator John DeFrancisco to
construct a community theater inside
the Case Supply Building located on the
corner of Marcellus and Wyoming Streets.
Look for construction to start on a 125+
person theater as well as two rehearsal
studio spaces that will be accessible to
the entire community for performances
and events. The space will finally give
local arts organizations an affordable place
to preform and will give individuals and
groups a place to gather for everything from
exercise classes to poetry readings.
Keep checking back each month to learn
more about these exciting projects and
others in 2016!

Three newer parks on the Near Westside
When I was researching for my last column on Skiddy Park I came
across information about three newer parks which are also located in
our neighborhood: Jack’s Place, Ward Bakery Park, and Lipe Art Park.
This month, even though they are under cover of snow, I will introduce
you to their humble beginnings and then perhaps in the Spring you
may want to wander through the area and pay them a visit.
On Congress Ave. there is a pocket park, as Syracuse Parks and
Recreation likes to calls it. “Jack’s Place” is a senior park. This pocket
park was formerly a vacant lot and Jack Breen started cleaning it up
around 1990. Many of us on this end of town keep vacant lots near us
cleaned up. Gradually seniors began to gather there. With the help of
John “Uncle Bubba” Cannon and Mary Alice Smothers, at that time our corner //
working for Weed & Seed Program through Home Headquarters, it
became what is know today as Jack’s Place. There are benches and
a covered pavilion, even grills. It is a place where one can see checker games, barbecues,
birthday parties, weddings, yard sales, baby showers, etc. I recently asked Mary Alice
Smothers, now of PEACE, Inc., to give me a quote: “ A place where seniors and youth connect,
the past, present and future.” Just last summer, our artist in residence, Brendan Rose,
installed a new sculpture. It is definitely worth walking over to check that out.
When I moved here in 1972 there was a bakery in the neighborhood: Ward Bakery on
Shonnard Street. We always knew when they were baking, we could smell it everywhere.
Over time though they went out of business and we had an abandoned building; it sat there
tempting children to come play in it. In 1995 it was demolished and then we had an empty
lot. At some point after this the City asked the residents what we wanted; they had an idea
to take the 1.5 acre lot and build houses. The residents responded loud and clear that we
wanted a green space! In the fall of 1998 TNT Westside worked with 33 Syracuse University
architecture students and the result of that is what is now called Ward Bakery Park. Not
only is there a green space, which is often used for community gatherings, but there is also
a small playground area which receives a lot of use. It has definitely added a much-needed
green space to our neighborhood.
comenzaron a reunirse allí.
Lipe Art Park. What is that? Where is that?
South Geddes Street toward downtown, approximately two acres. The property this de juegos, que recibe una gran cantidad de uso. Definitivamente ha añadido un espacio verde

New local artist in residence
joins SALTQuarters in 2016
By Michelle Reynolds
SALTQuarters is excited to announce
our newest local artist-in-residence
for 2016:Justin Mastrangelo. Justin is
a graphic artist, printmaker, and art
educator. He earned a Masters of Art
from the State University of New York
at Oswego in 2013. His work deals
with contemporary forms of design,
illustration, and printmaking that
expand on traditional methods utilized
by visual artists. Justin works in both
digital and analog processes, creating
work that uses type, image, and selective
use of color to engage viewers.
While a printmaker by trade, Justin
also enjoys engaging with the public
in a variety of community based art
experiences. In the past few years, he has
helped organize community based art
and music events as well as assisted in
the organization and promotion of events
for artist communities. While his project
for SALTQuarters is still in the works,
he is certainly excited to get started. Be
sure to say hi when you see Justin in the
neighborhood!
SALT Quarters se complace en anunciar
nuestro nuevo artista en residencia local
para 2016: Justin Mastrangelo. Justin es
un artista gráfico, grabador, y educador
de arte. Obtuvo una Maestría en Arte
por la Universidad Estatal de Nueva York
en Oswego en 2013. Su trabajo es con
las formas contemporáneas de diseño,
ilustración y el grabado que se expanden
en los métodos tradicionales utilizados
por los artistas visuales. Justin trabaja
Mientras
que su proyecto para SALT Quarters se
encuentra todavía en las obras, esta sin
duda emocionado de empezar. Saludara
cuando vea Justin en el barrio!
PARKS
FROM PAGE 2
park is located on what was a former railroad
yard; it does run right along the railroad
tracks. The park’s beginning was around 2006,
and was started by a sub-group of a local nonprofit, 40 Below and a group of artists located
in the Gear Factory. (They call themselves
park stewards.) Because of its location, right
next to an extremely busy city street, it can be
challenging to get to it. There is no parking
there. There is no playground, but it is a nice
green space, a couple of benches and picnic
tables. I have seen people utilizing the tables
throughout the good weather. But what is there
is an interesting variety of sculptures, art
forms, flower beds and lots of green space. I
occasionally go for a walk and visit the park.
Even though it is right by a busy street it is
rather peaceful.
When our weather warms and you can get
outside to safely go for a walk, why not check
these newer parks out and see what you think.
You could take your lunch and eat at any of
them. I’ll look for you.

organización no lucrativa local llamado
40 Below y un grupo de artistas situados
en la fábrica de engranajes. (Se llaman
los administradores del parque.) Debido
He visto a
personas que utilizan las mesas cuando
hace buen tiempo.
parques nuevos? Usted podría tomar su
almuerzo y comer en cualquiera de ellos.
Voy a estar viendo para usted.

West Street fence makeover coming this spring
By Maarten Jacobs
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
In the fall of 2015 the New York
State Department of Transportation
(NYDOT) and the City of Syracuse
partnered together, and in collaboration with the Near Westside Initiative
(NWSI), worked to bring great changes
and improvements to West Street. The
changes included reducing the number
of car lanes, adding parking, adding
a bike path, and adding a pedestrian
crosswalk at Otisco Street. Additionally, a long decorative fence was installed
along the median so as to encourage
people to cross at proper crosswalks
rather than risking their lives by running across West Street.
Unfortunately, since the installation
of the fence, it has been hit by cars
repeatedly, causing it to need regular
maintenance. As a result, the NYDOT
has begun designing a new fence system that will be installed in the spring
of 2016. The fence will be sturdier
and will be rooted in concrete so that
minimal damage will occur in the case
of another automobile accident. In
the meantime, the fence will not be
repaired but rather will be patched as
needed with temporary fencing.
Thank you to everyone who has called
the NWSI and NYDOT with their concerns and questions about the fencing.
The NYDOT is confident that a good
solution will be installed in the spring
that will keep everyone safe, and would
become an eyesore for the community.
By Maarten Jacobs
2016 se perfila rápidamente a ser otro gran
año para el Near Westside. Con un montón
de gran programación en curso, nuevos
proyectos, muchos eventos para la comunidad,
y nuevos socios, 2016 traerá un progreso más
emocionante para el barrio. A continuación
son sólo algunas cosas para este año:
NuVal viene a Nojaim
Bros. Grocery Store
¿Ha notado algunas nuevos letreros en
Nojaim Bros. que dicen “NuVal”? Se
pregunta que son? NuVal es una nueva
manera innovadora de ayudar a determinar
cuáles son los elementos más saludables de
todos los alimentos disponibles en la tienda,
dentro de cada categoría de alimentos. NuVal
4
iniciativa llamada “Take Back the Streets”
(ver para más información sobre esto el
próximo mes) que será bien publicitado en
toda la comunidad.
Nuevo Artista en Residencia Salt
Quarters

Construction begins on Case Supply Building apartments
By Maarten Jacobs
The former Case Supply building, located
at the intersection of Wyoming and
Marcellus streets, continues to see more
improvements. This time, 12 apartments
are being constructed on the 3rd f loor of the
building, in the previously vacant section
nestled between WCNY and ProLiteracy.
The construction began in late December
and will continue through spring and
summer and will be completed by the early
part of the fall in 2016. The apartments
will greatly vary in size and shape ranging
from a small studio apartment to a two
story, three bedroom apartment.
The apartments, designed by Lake
Architects and constructed by Burke
Contracting, will feature open living spaces
with modern kitchens and contemporary
fixtures. Tenants will each have access to
additional storage units, shared laundry
services, and private parking. All of the
apartments will take advantage of the large
window openings that used to be present
in the building which will provide great
natural light.
With close access to downtown (only a 3
minute walk!), easy access to 690 and I-81,
and all the great amenities that the Near
Westside community has to offer (local
grocery store, parks, schools, and services),
these apartments will be leasing quickly.
The Near Westside Initiative plans to start
leasing the apartments in mid-summer
(pricing yet to be determined).
Stay tuned for more construction updates
as the project unfolds!
Wyoming y Marcellus, sigue viviendo
pisos y tres dormitorios .
Los apartamentos, diseñados por Lake
Arquitectos y construidos por Burke
Contracting, contaran con espacios
abiertos con una moderna cocina
y
accesorios
contemporáneos.
Los
inquilinos tendrán cada uno el acceso
a las unidades de almacenamiento
adicionales, servicio de lavandería
compartida y aparcamiento privado.
Todos los apartamentos se aprovechará de
las grandes aberturas de las ventanas que
solían estar presentes en el edificio que
proporcionaran mucha luz natural.
Con acceso cercano al centro (a sólo 3
minutos a pie!), fácil acceso a la 690 y
la I-81, y todos los grandes servicios
que la comunidad Near Westside ofrece
(tienda local de comestibles, parques,
escuelas y servicios), éstos apartamentos
serán arrendados rápidamente. Near
Westside Initiative planea comenzar el
arrendamiento de los apartamentos en pleno
verano (aún los precios por determinar).
