Welcome to the beginning of our annual St. Jude Novena! For a number of years, our parish has been celebrating a 9-day prayer experience, calling upon our patron Saint Jude Thaddeus, to be a source of strength and guidance for our parish family over the next year. We begin Tuesday evening, moving our regular 6:30 PM Mass to 7:00,
honored to have Fr. Jerry Simmons preach for us! Fr. Simmons was the Parochial Vicar here at St. Jude’s when he
was first ordained in 1968, and served under Fr. Francis “Pat” Gallagher. Fr. Jerry was here during the construction of the new
Church, but finished his assignment before its completion. For the past 26 years, he has been the Director of the Ecclesia Center,
serving as a counselor, therapist, & spiritual director to priests and religious from all over the country, as well as many lay people.
We were “housemates” for 16 years! And, if you think I’m crazy ...We look forward to his words of challenge and hope, along
with those of Fr. Matt Kujawinski, Fr. Matt Strickenberger, and Fr. Mike Ferrick. I am really looking forward to having these
great priests back home to St. Jude’s.
Congratulations to St. Jude Parishioners Brenda & Ben Villa, who were recently welcomed as Associates of the Sisters
of St. Joseph! Brenda & Ben have completed a year-long formation program, which included information sessions about the
commitment to the charisms of the Sisters … many moments of prayer with the community … and a special retreat. They joined
seven other lay people as Associates into the community. If anyone is interested in learning more about the community of the
Sisters of St. Joseph, or becoming an Associate, feel free to contact Nancy Donnelly of St. Jude’s, who has been an Associate,
also, for a number of years: nancy.donnelly@ssjerie.org.
One more week, and it is the 4th Annual “Serafini’s Spaghetti Dinner”! Our team has been working hard preparing for
one of the best fall dinners in the area! We will start serving at Noon, and going all the way to 5:30. Remember, too, that we are
offering delivery service to those who are not able to come and join us in person. We would be happy to bring your dinner to
you! And, we have great “Take Out” service, too! Now, the highlight of the day will be the raffling off of our 2015 Corvette Z51
Stingray convertible!! Or, if you would rather, you can take $40,000 in cash! We only have one more week to sell or buy the
tickets. If we can get a large majority of registered parishioners to do just that, we could have a wonderful profit, that really helps
to financially secure our budget! One more week, gang! It is going to be a great day! And, let’s hope this is the 3rd year in-a-row
that parishioners win the car!
There really isn’t much mentioned about St. Jude in the four Gospels. But, I found this from “Catholic Online” website:
St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St. James the Less, and a relative of Our Savior. He was one of the 12 Apostles of
Jesus and his attribute is a club. Images of St. Jude often include a flame around his head, which represent his presence at Pentecost, when he accepted the Holy Spirit alongside the other apostles. Another attribute is St. Jude holding an image of Christ, in
the Image of Edessa. Sometimes he can also be seen holding a carpenter's ruler or is depicted with a scroll or book, the Epistle of
Jude. Biblical scholars agree St. Jude was a son of Clopas and his mother Mary was the Virgin Mary's cousin. Ancient writers
tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and assisted at the election of his brother, St. Simeon, as Bishop of Jerusalem. Saint Jude is
not the same person as Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Our Lord and despaired because of his great sin and lack of trust in God's
mercy. Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the Last Supper why He would not manifest Himself to the whole world after His
resurrection. Little else is known of his life. Legend claims that he visited Beirut and Edessa and could have been martyred with
St. Simon in Persia. He is an author of an epistle (letter) to the Churches of the East, particularly the Jewish converts, directed
against the heresies of the Simonians, Nicolaites, and Gnostics. Though Saint Gregory the Illuminator has been credited as the
"Apostle to the Armenians,"the Apostles Jude and Bartholomew are believed to have brought Christianity to Armenia, where Jude
was rumored to have later been martyred. There is some debate about where Jude died, though most Biblical scholars agree he
was martyred. He is believed to have been martyred either in Armenia or Beirut. Following his death, St. Jude's body was
brought to Rome and left in a crypt in St. Peter's Basilica. Today his bones can be found in the left transept of St. Peter's Basilica
under the main altar of St. Joseph in a tomb he shares with the remains of the apostle Simon the Zealot. Pilgrims came to St.
Jude's grave to pray and many reported a powerful intercession, leading to the title, T
" he Saint for the Hopeless and the Despaired."Two Saints, St. Bridget of Sweden and St. Bernard, had visions from God asking them to accept St. Jude as "The Patron
Saint of the Impossible." Roman Catholics invoke St. Jude when in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses
that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances -just as their forefathers had done before
them; therefore, he is the patron saint of desperate cases. There are two mentions of Jude in the New Testament: Luke 6:16 and
Acts 1:13. In John 14:22, a disciple called J"udas not Iscariot"is assumed to be the apostle Jude, though critics believe it is too
ambiguous to believe it is a certainty. When the apostles are listed in Matthew 10:3 and Mark 3:18, Jude's name does not appear
but T
" haddeus"does. This occurrence led early Christians to believe Jude was known as both J"ude"and T
" haddeus,"the latter of
which could have been a sort of nickname.
Finally, here is the Novena Prayer, to be said on each day from October 20th to the Feast of St. Jude the Apostle on
October 28th: "
St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful
intercessor for all who invoke you, special patron in time of need; to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart, and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power, to come to my assistance; help me now in my urgent need and grant my
earnest petition. I will never forget your graces and the favors you do obtain for me and I will do my utmost to spread devotion
to you. Amen."
Have a great Novena, and a great week!

Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time
A wonderful Grandparent Day Celebration at OLCS
Hundreds of grandparents
walked the halls of OLCS on Friday.
Although the weather was rainy and cool
it did not stop grandparents from coming
out and spending time with their grandchildren. Our guests enjoyed hospitality
from our wonderful volunteers and student
council and school ambassadors. The grandparents enjoyed making Christmas cards for
the soldiers, creating squares out of fabric for
the Linus Project. Blankets are collected locally and distributed to children in
hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in
need of a big hug. They also recited the rosary with their grandchildren. The day
wrapped up with a Prayer service.
Corella Productions raises $307 for the
OLCS Tuition Angel Scholarship Fund
The production “Godspell” entertained over
40 guests on Sunday evening in the School Library.
Godspell premiered over the summer as part of the
“theater camp” at OLCS through Corella Productions. Thank you for giving back to OLCS by
having this production performed again to raise monies for OLCS.
Over 1/3 of OLCS families receive tuition assistance each year.
Each year that number increases. Between the EITC program, BRAVO
Foundation, and Advancement efforts, we distributed over $70,000 to
those families in need. Our first priority to our school is our families.
Catholic education is a choice. Many work 2 or 3 jobs so that their
children can attend OLCS. Every penny counts.
The performers were wonderful in Godspell. Thank you for all
your hard work and enthusiasm in bringing the performance to the
school once again for all to enjoy!
Enjoying a beautiful
autumn
day at
OLCS!

Petitions or Intentions Needed
The Rosary Group of the St. Jude’s will be
praying the rosary this month of October for the
intentions of our Parishioners. Baskets will be at each
entrance of the church with paper and pens to write
your petitions or intentions on.
The baskets will be brought to the day chapel and
placed before the statue of St. Jude who is the patron
Saint of hopeless cases. Petitions or intentions will
NOT be read out loud, but we will ask for St. Jude to
intercede for us and grant these requests. These
petitions or intentions then will be offered up at the
Novena to St. Jude at the end of the month.
We are in difficult times right now and many of
us are in need of prayers for ourselves and for others.
Please help this be a great success!!
