Many of us have a story to tell about
someone we know, or someone we loved, who
died of cancer. This past winter was no
exception for me. Within a three-month period,
I lost several friends and colleagues to this
terrible disease. Linda, Ken, and Kathe all had
some form of cancer that took their precious
lives.
Much longer ago, both my grandmother and
my step-grandfather died of cancer.
Yes, we all have a story. And with each of
those stories, how quickly we are reminded of
how short and precious life truly is.
So it was with much joy that I visited the first Relay For Life of the
American Cancer Society held at the West Allegheny High School’s Joe
DeMichela Stadium in May 18. Hundreds of local residents, teams of
students and teachers, families and friends, each set up “residence”
along the perimeter of the field where a member of each team was
always walking during the overnight event.
There was much to enjoy -- raffles, games, music, sports, food, and
7HDPZRUN%DVNHWEDOODQG/LIH
more. Teams were dressed in matching t-shirts they made, and some
decorated their “booths” in unique themes and colors.
The mood was buoyant, and smiles abounded. Underneath it all,
however, I am sure that each individual had a story about someone they
knew or loved who was taken by this insidious disease.
The weather remained optimum for all who spent nearly 24 hours (yes,
they camped in tents right on the football field), and the event raised a
whopping $37,500.
The monies will go toward further research to hopefully find some cure
for this disease before another generation experiences its ravages.
And, perhaps some hope is here. Heritage Valley Health System has
announced its partnership with Cancer Prevention Study-3 to invite
residents like you and me to take part in a study to determine our risks
for cancer.
With the generosity of so many who take part in annual Relays for Life
around our region and the nation, and the persistent determination of the
researchers to find answers, hopefully someday our future generations
will ask, “What is cancer?”

In Pittsburgh, few other sports matter as little as professional basketball.
That has much to do with the fact that, despite our sports-centric mentality, our town has been snubbed by the glitzy
NBA, with its comparatively small pool of stand-out players. That's hardly to say, though, that Pittsburgh isn't a
basketball town. It's just one that's embraced college and high school basketball to fill a void left by the one major
professional sport that's snubbed us, or visa versa.
Adherents to the college sport often talk about the sense of teamwork and lack of spotlight and ball hogging stars. That
seems perfectly in line with the Pittsburgh sports fan attitude, one that traditionally prefers team play, defense, and
toughness over flashy offense. I am one of many, for instance, who was greatly saddened when it was announced that Pitt
would be leaving the Big East, a basketball conference known for its defense and grit, for the ACC. Football television
contracts being what they are, it was probably inevitable. I now feel lucky enough to have witnessed a moment in
Hartford, Connecticut, when Pitt center Dejuan Blair caught a rebound out of the air, along with Hasheem Thabeet's arm,
and flipped both over his back. Thabeet crumpled onto the floorboards, but was still called for the foul, while Pitt went
on to usurp UConn for its first-ever victory against a top-seeded team for its first-ever top national ranking in team
history.
In July, a Division I pro-am league will be coming to Montour, a school that's had plenty of its own basketball success
in recent years. We write about that league in this issue of Allegheny West Magazine, and about the Montour alum who
grew that league out of a small, high school summer basketball program that he built into one of the largest of its kind on
the East Coast. Sure, when the pro-am plays, some players will be better known than others, but there likely won't be
standouts who can take over a game on their own. Thrown together for a short summer season, they'll have to work that
much harder at developing team chemistry and learning how to work together.
That's what it's all about in basketball, and in life. It should be interesting.

WEBINAR TO ADDRESS
INNOVATION FOR BUSINESSES
A free webinar that will be held on Thursday, August 15, from
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., “Follow This Path: How the World’s
Greatest Organizations Drive Growth by Unleashing Human
Potential,” featuring Curt Coffman, workplace consultant and
co-author of First Break All the Rules.
What do the world’s greatest organizations have in common?
They know that their most valuable resource is human; their
employees and customers. The best companies also understand
two important facts: people are emotional first and rational second,
and because of that, employees and customers must be emotionally
engaged in order for the organization to reach its full potential.
Research not only bears that out, but has uncovered the secrets of
creating and managing an “emotional economy.”

Come to the main Deer Creek Winery where it all began.
Located on a road less traveled and deep set in the pastoral
landscape of Shippenville, Pennsylvania, Deer Creek Winery's
main location is a destination stop you don't want to miss.
Our visitors are given a unique experience the moment they
walk through our doors when they are welcomed by Deer Creek's
best friend, Vino, our beautiful golden retriever mascot. The
experience continues with free tastings of our young Pennsylvania wines of many fruit, sweet, and dry varieties, including our
signature wine, Deer Creek Raspberry. Our visitors are also
welcome to enjoy a conversation over delicious tapas offerings
around our outdoor campfire and a glass of your favorite Deer
Creek wine.
We want everyone who visits to share the unique experience
that is Deer Creek Winery, and to leave with a happy palate and a
smile on their face.
Each of Deer Creek Winery's locations offers their own personality and a specialized grove to add to the whole Deer Creek
experience. While visiting the northern countryside, we invite
you to stop by our Seneca location and check out their beautiful
store. Elegant and inviting, our Seneca Cozy Grove has it all.
There you are welcome to sample our wines, savor your favorite
by the glass, and enjoy our menu of fine tapas eats and our
signature delectables.
For your convenience, we have several winery stores
located throughout western Pennsylvania.
Enjoy a specialty latte or a wine milkshake inside the
Coffee Grove at the Clearview Mall in Butler, or travel further
south and try our specialty oils and vinegars at the Olive
Grove in Ross Park Mall.
You will find the Biscotti Grove at all of our fine locations,
including Beaver Valley Mall and at The Mall at Robinson.
And of course, our main location and birthplace of our
signature Raspberry wines has Vino's Raspberry Grove.
Also, we offer wine ice cream and sorbets at all of our
locations!
For more information, visit www.deercreekwine.com or call
(814) 354-7392. If you're headed to Main, add our address to
your GPS favorite destinations: 3333 Soap Fat Road,

Kavic Winery
Immigrant grandparents from both sides of the Kavic
family were involved with winemaking in Europe. When
our grandparents arrived in the United States from Italy
and Serbia at the turn of the 20th century, they brought
their winemaking skills and love of wine making with them.
The Great Depression was a difficult time for the United
States. There was little work as the mills closed. Many
struggled just to survive. Our grandparents were no
exception. Wine and wine making that provided joy and
pleasure during good times helped our families stay
together and survive.
Today, this same spirit of sharing, love of family, and
self-sacrifice governs every facet of wine making at the
Kavic Winery. The owners, Michael and Patricia Kavic,
are intimately involved in all aspects of wine production.
Patricia’s brother, Patrick J. Fleck, is Director of Operations at the winery and has been involved with every phase
of winery production since a license was granted for the
facility in 2007.
In addition, Patrick is a co-owner and the guiding
force behind Deep Valley Vineyard located in
Oakdale, just 15 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh.
Under Patrick’s direct supervision, a two-acre
block of land at the Deep Valley site is being prepared for planting this summer with the cold-hardy,
hybrid grape, Marquette, which was developed at
the University of Minnesota. Although Patrick is
confident about its success, it will be three years
before the vines mature sufficiently to produce
viable grapes.
Currently, all grapes used for wine making at the
winery are locally grown using local labor and local
product from area vineyards. The entire process is
Pittsburgh made and Pittsburgh proud.
Spend a few moments and sample our wines. We
are certain you will find something you like and that
you will return.
Riesling:
A Versatile Wine
Riesling is one of the better wines for food pairing
because of its balance of intense acidity, minerality,
and fruit. Most would agree that it would be difficult
to find a more accommodating wine for a broad
range of food than this delightful white wine varietal.
A high acid content allows riesling to handle hearty
sauces and high-end meats while innate fruit flavors
lend charm for tackling highly spiced foods.
Our semi-sweet riesling pairs well with almost all
Asian (Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian)
cuisine along with other diverse menus, specifically
barbecue, and Southwestern style dishes.
Try riesling with barbecued ribs and chicken,
corned beef, crab, or cured meats. You won’t be
disappointed. In addition, this light, pleasant wine
goes well with egg dishes, guacamole, ham, curries,
onion rings, pork (especially pulled pork), and hot
dogs.

Volant Mill Winery
Nestled within the farmlands of western Pennsylvania
sits the Janoski family farm and greenhouse. Inside the
market, along with home-grown produce and fresh-fromthe-oven baked goods, you will find yet another local
treasure: Volant Mill Winery. The relationship between
nutritious local food and delicious regional wine goes back
thousands of years and we are pleased to announce that it
is still going strong!
Named for the historic mill in Volant (a small town 60
miles north of Pittsburgh) the winery has four retail
locations: Volant, Grove City, Cranberry/Mars, and
Janoski’s. Their locally produced wine may be sampled
and purchased at each location. The store within Janoski’s
farm market opened in 2010 and has been a hit with
Clinton’s residents, who are well aware of the important
role small businesses play in the area’s economy. Of
course, geopolitical matters aside, the wine itself is the
main attraction!
While the selection of dry wines (including the soon-tobe-released Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc)
appeals to long-time aficionados, even those who don’t
think of themselves as “wine drinkers” may be surprised by
the refreshing, pleasantly fruity flavor for which Pennsylvania wines are best known.
Volant’s perennial bestseller, Volant Red, is a rich, sweet
table wine that goes well with just about anything. The
Apple is crisp and sweet, like autumn’s first harvest; try it
as a pork marinade or in your barbecue sauce! The Blackberry harkens back to those sunny summer days when you
plucked sun-ripened fruit right from the bush. And the
newest release, Cocoa Vino, is a sweet red wine blended
with cocoa, a delectable dessert all on its own. Peach wine
is in the works, which should be available late this summer!
Still not sure? Stop in for a free sample! Or, better yet,
plan to attend Janoski’s Farm Harvest Wine Festival! On
Saturday, July 20, five other area wineries will join Volant
Mill and the Janoski family in a celebration of summer!
Admission ($25 in advance or $30 at the door) includes a
wine glass for sampling, farm fresh food, dessert, entertainment, and more! See www.VolantMillWinery.com or
www.Janoskis.com for details!

ABOVE: Congratulations to Holly
Goodwin, Caroline Dischner and
Ben Lander, left to right, for their
second place award in the 3rd
Annual Children’s Choice
Awards, held May 9 at the
Carnegie Library of Homestead.
The students competed against
other students in grades 3-6 and
answered questions about eight
books that were nominated for
the Children’s Choice Awards.
The students listened to
storytelling, drew their dream
library, and listened to a special
presentation by Adam Gidwitz,
the author of A Talk Dark and
Grimm and In a Glass Grimmly.

Recently retired Montour Athletic Director Mitch Galiyas can list off
numerous highlights from his 38-year career in athletics, much of it
spent at Montour building the program into a AAA force.
Bringing the nationally televised ESPN reality show “Bound for
Glory” there is one. Coaching the boys’ varsity volleyball team to three
section titles and a WPIAL title is another. He can also list hiring two
coaches who have made the football and basketball teams perennial
WPIAL contenders, and brokering sponsorship deals saving the
school and taxpayers over a million dollars.
One of Mitch’s fondest accomplishments, though, actually comes
from another school, Quigley Catholic, where in 1986 he took over the
$OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH-XO\$XJXVW
single-A football squad. During the first half of his tenure at
Montour, Mitch coached a number of teams at other schools,
including Quigley, which at that time hadn’t won a game in three
seasons. With Mitch at the helm, they won their first game that
year.
“They had a sign out front that said, ‘We’re rich, we got
Mitch’,” he says.
He was reminded of that victory when he went to sign up for
Social Security, and the sales representative mentioned it. She
was a Quigley grad, and a former member of the marching band.
Before Mitch coached at Quigley, though, his career started at
the same school where it has since ended, as a history teacher
and the freshman football coach. It was his first job out of
college. After coaching at Quigley, he coached at West Allegheny for a year under coach Joe Frangione, and then at Baldwin
under Don Yanessa. At Carlynton, he was head football coach for
the 1991 and 1992 seasons.
All the while, though, he continued to teach at Montour, where
he also coached the men’s volleyball team to a lifetime 351-169
record, and a WPIAL title in 1987. Among the players on that
1987 team was Chris Hale, who went on to play volleyball at the
Naval Academy.
“He brought that same football fire to volleyball,” says Chris
about Mitch. “He was fiery, passionate, and inspirational.”
It was Mitch who introduced him to his coach at the Naval
Academy, says Chris, who later served in the military, and now
heads Victory Media, a Coraopolis-based company publishing
four national military publications.
Montour alum Sam Woods played under Mike Marchionda, a
member of Mitch’s 1987 WPIAL-winning team, and under Mike
went on to earn Montour another WPIAL title in 2000. Now the
head volleyball coach at Moon, Sam says that when his grades
started to slip, it was Mitch who sat him down to talk to him, and
later got him a job after college.
“He always wanted the best for the people he cared about,”
says Sam about Mitch.
In 1995, Mitch was named athletic director at Montour, after
two years of serving as an assistant to the position. He describes
it as the type of job where he learned to “think outside the box,”
and make moves like one in 1998 when he secured a new track in
exchange for allowing a company to install a 3-way billboard on
campus. The billboard was never installed, but the school still
got its track, which Mitch says would have otherwise cost about
$140,000.
There was also the $75,000 in weight equipment he secured
through a grant from “Body by Jake” for the middle school, and a
deal he brokered with Allegheny General Hospital to supply the
school with athletic trainers.
Most notable, though, may have been the ESPN reality series,
which operated on the premise of installing former NFL player
Dick Butkus as head coach to turn around a high school football
program that hadn’t reached the playoffs in five years. Through
the show, the school brokered a deal with Dicks for amenities

from lockers to projectors, and another with
Reebok for new equipment. Yet another
through Energizer got the school a new
scoreboard and play clocks.
“We were the first in the area to get them,”
says Mitch about the play clocks, noting
that at first some officials were reluctant to
use them.
At Montour, the “Bound for Glory” idea
was met with plenty of enthusiasm by the
community, complete with tailgating and
packed bleachers. That was another payoff,
says Mitch.
“The ESPN producers were confused
when they got the tape,” he says. “They
were like, ‘we thought this was a dying
program’.”
Montour secured just one win that season,
but three years later competed at Heinz Field
for a WPIAL title. Mitch points out that
since 2007, the team has made 3 WPIAL title
appearances under coach Lou Cerro, who
Mitch hired to take over in 2006. Lou was
named the AAA football coach of the year,
while men’s basketball coach Adam
Kaufmann was named the AAA basketball
coach of the year by the Pennsylvania
Coach’s Association.
“I don’t believe that’s ever been done
before in the state of Pennsylvania,” says
Mitch.
Since coming back to coach at his alma
mater, Adam has coached the Montour
basketball team to three WPIAL appearances, two titles, and two state finals. Mitch
says that when he hired Adam in 2007, some
questioned his experience, but Mitch says
Adam’s enthusiasm and character convinced him he was the right choice.
As he heads into retirement, Mitch says he
is looking forward to volunteering with his
church, St. Malachy, and the Knights of
Columbus, as well as the Pittsburgh Basketball Club. After serving as a Kennedy zoning
officer for 15 years, and on the parks board
for 10, he was recently named interim
commissioner, and is running for the
position this coming election.
He’s also looking forward to spending time
with his grandsons and his wife, Mary Jo,
and volunteering at Montour.
“They’ve been good to me,” he says, “and
I’d like to give back.”

Carpenters Do Good
Deed for Botanic Garden
ABOVE: Kitty Vagley of the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden and Seth
Greenier of the South Hills and Zeus Construction show blueprints of
the storybook house.
Before carpenters can join the Greater Pennsylvania Regional
Council of Carpenters, and go on to represent the highest
qualities and standards required by the union, they first must
complete a four-year apprenticeship program at the
organization’s training facility near Settlers Cabin Park.
This year, as some fourth-year carpentry apprentices were
preparing to graduate and become journeymen, they took part
in an event that both tested their skills and benefitted some
good causes.
On May 7, while a number of those apprentices built lean-tos
and octagonal picnic tables for area parks, four apprentices
competed against each other by building one-fourth of a
storybook house. Once completed, the four parts were
assembled, and each apprentices’ workmanship graded.
That house has since been donated to the Pittsburgh Botanic
Garden, a massive project that aims to reclaim 460 acres of
former strip mine and convert it into a thriving garden and park.
Botanic Garden President Greg Nace and Director of Development Kitty Vagley were both on hand to watch the apprentices’
work, as was Board Member Judy Wojanis, president of
Wojanis Hydraulic Supply Company in North Fayette.
Kitty says plans are to install the house in the Book Worm
Glen section of the garden’s Eastern European Woodlands area.
She says the garden is currently working on an attraction
entitled “Mr. Roger’s Garden of Make-Believe,” and that the
theme will be evident throughout.
Working on the house were Seth Greenier of the South Hills
and Zeus Construction, Michael Howard of Irwin and Stevens
Painton Corporation, Daniel Nill of West Mifflin and MBM
Contracting, Inc., and Robinson resident Brian Kovacs, who
works for DCK Worldwide. The house was built out of environmentally friendly, non-wolmanized wood encased in cedar
shingles. Its roof was made largely out of materials produced
from recycled paper.

In 1923, something in Kennedy Township started to bloom. A group of
women met with the president of the Allegheny County division of the
Women’s National Farm and Garden Association to organize the Kennedy
Township Farm and Garden Club. Over time, the name was changed and is
now known as the Kennedy Garden Club.
The original membership totaled 27 women, and dues were two dollars a
year. The club met at the former Ken Mawr Elementary School on Pine
Hollow Road. (The building now houses Allegheny Valley School.)
Club member Anna Jane Bayer notes that, in the beginning, members kept
records of their activities in journals, which were hand-written with ink and
pen. They would hold picnics at members’ homes. Entire families would
attend, complete with picnic baskets, and blankets for the lawn.
The club very early on valued civic duty. One of its first tasks was to
promote the clean up of a local garbage dumping ground in the area near
the Giant Eagle in Kennedy Township.
During World War II, members promoted victory gardens, and, through
the Civilian Defense effort, sponsored and directed the hospital canning
project, canning 5,600 quarts of fruits and vegetables each year. It was a
natural carryover, as members already were growing their own fruits and
vegetables to feed their families.
“Environmental issues are always uppermost on our agenda,” explains
Anna Jane, “so much so, that reports are given at monthly meetings about
current environmental concerns and how we as members can contribute to
keep God’s planet green and healthy.”
This year, the club promoted Arbor Day by planting another flowering
tree at Fairhaven Park in Kennedy Township. In addition, members
refurbish flower gardens at the Father Ryan Arts Center in McKees Rocks,
and support the local Meals on Wheels program with goodie bags for
shuts-ins and centerpieces for fundraising luncheons.
Each year, the club awards an annual scholarship to a deserving high
school senior who has shown academic achievement and has been
involved in community service.
Just a few months after the club was organized, members held their first
flower show. Ladies got to show off their abilities at “mastering” the art of
flower arranging. Notable judges throughout the area came to look over,
critique, and award ribbons for their work.
Such shows are a thing of the past, Anna Jane says, and the garden club
now concentrates its efforts on community service and beautification,
education, and environmental efforts. In the past, cherry trees were planted
along the driveway of the newly built Ohio Valley General Hospital in
TOP TO BOTTOM: Past club presidents gather during this year’s Past President’s
Luncheon in May. At the event, the club honored its oldest active member, Doris
Presutti, with a birthday cake and flowers on her 90th birthday. Last month, an
inscribed granite memorial bench was dedicated on the grounds of the Ken Mawr
United Presbyterian Church in celebration of the club’s 90th anniversary and in
memory of deceased members. Each year at the annual Past Presidents’ Luncheon, a
rose will be placed on the bench in memory of each member who has died during the
previous year. During May, members refurbished the flower beds at the Father Ryan
Arts Center and the Serenity Garden behind McDermott’s Funeral Home. On May 7,
the Kennedy Township Board of Commissioners presented the Kennedy Garden Club
with a Certificate of Merit Award for their 90th Anniversary to recognize their
accomplishments to make the community more beautiful.

Kennedy Township. (The first Ohio Valley General Hospital
was in the Norwood section of Stowe Township)
In recent years, they have planted shrubs, trees, and
flowers in Fairhaven Park, plant and maintain a vegetable
garden at Caring Heights (formerly Sycamore Nursing Home)
help the residents at The Willows plant flowering pots for
their patios, and plant flowers in McDermott’s Serenity
Gardens in memory of beloved members.
Even local residents who aren’t members can get involved
with club activities. Beautification Awards are given each
summer to local residents and businesses who, with their
own hands (not commercially done), beautify the community
with eye appealing landscapes.
To raise funds for their many civic beautification efforts,
club members hold an annual Plant/Bake/Craft Sale at Ken
Mawr Plaza each year. They also bake homemade goods,
create garden crafts, and hold a raffle during the event.
Anna Jane notes, “We are also available at the event to
offer advice about plants and gardening to any first-time
gardener or those unfamiliar with a particular plant. This
major fundraising event has become a widely known ‘place to
be’ in May. No matter what the weather, the community looks
forward to this sale. We divide and mature our own perennials
throughout the year, then let our “babies” go to new homes in May.
Some of these plants have been handed down through generations,
thus in some small way, Kennedy Township residents are truly
“honorary members” of the Kennedy Garden Club.”
This year, members also participated in the May Mart at Old
Economy Village selling plants, baked goods and crafts, and
participated in the plant sale at Old Economy Village, both events
providing additional opportunities to raise funds to benefit community projects.
From its beginnings 90 years ago, the Kennedy Garden Club’s
focus hasn’t changed much. Membership still remains about the
same, with 30 members today. Several members have been with the
club since the 1960s. The club now meets at the Ken Mawr UP
Church now, not too far from its original meeting site. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. (except July and
August).
Says Anna Jane, “We continue to follow in the footsteps of the
ladies who began this wonderful journey some 90 years ago.”
For more information call Judy Fritzges, president, at (412) 3316175. To learn more, visit www.kennedygardenclub.com or get the

Many patients arrive at their first physical therapy appointment
expecting to receive hot packs, ultrasound, and instructions on
how to complete a series of exercises. These modalities are
warranted in many instances, and most therapists would agree
that exercise is needed to help restore muscle imbalances.
However, many therapists now approach the restoration of
function from a different perspective. These therapists are
interested in why a muscle isn’t functioning properly and view
back exercise not as the driving mode of recovery, but as a
complement to manual therapy. They may, for instance, look to
restore proper sacroiliac or lumbar joint function to treat piriformis
syndrome rather than directly manipulate the piriformis muscle
through exercise.
Manual physical therapy is a specialized form of physical
therapy delivered with the hands as opposed to a device or
machine. In manual therapy, practitioners use their hands to
put pressure on muscle tissue and manipulate/mobilize
joints in an attempt to decrease pain caused by muscle
spasm, muscle tension, and joint dysfunction. Most manual
therapy training programs in the United States are a fouryear, post-graduate programs that emphasize clinical
experience, classroom education, and extensive exams. The
credentials COMT, CMPT, or OMT behind a therapist’s
name refer to certifications in orthopedic manual physical
therapy. Certified Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists
are specially trained in medical screening, anatomy,
physiology, joint and soft tissue mechanics. They are
experts in the musculoskeletal system. Research shows
combining manual therapy with exercise has better results
and outcomes than exercise alone.

BUSINESSES CAN RECEIVE
TAX CREDITS FOR SUPPORTING CENTER
Local corporations can impact a community in need, lower
their tax liability, and invest in proven programs for Sto-Rox
children and youth by supporting Focus On Renewal’s (FOR)
Father Ryan Arts Center, thanks to the Educational Improvement
Tax Credit Program (EITC).
FOR has been approved as an educational improvement
organization under the EITC for the Father Ryan Arts Center’s
Reader’s Theater program and arts education programs for
children and youth.
Since 2008, more than 1,000 elementary school students from
several schools and school districts have participated in
Reader’s Theater. Reader’s Theater introduces second and third
graders to theater and visual arts while improving their reading
fluency, vocabulary, and listening comprehension. This highly
successful program has doubled and even tripled these
elementary school students’ reading scores.
At the Father Ryan Arts Center, a wide variety of arts
education and enrichment programs for children and youth are
also offered year-round. Skilled artisans teach a plethora of
classes and workshops - from visual arts to performing arts - to
children and youth from 300 local families.
The Pennsylvania EITC program allows eligible businesses to
direct a percentage of their Pennsylvania state taxes to fund
innovative educational programming. A list of educational
improvement organizations can be found at newpa.com/eitc.
Businesses subject to one or more of the following taxes are
eligible to participate in the EITC program: corporate net income
tax, capital stock franchise tax, bank and trust company shares
tax, title insurance companies shares tax, insurance premiums
tax, mutual thrift institution tax, personal income tax of S
corporation shareholders or partnership partners.

In 2006, Montour alum and former basketball coach John Giammarco
was attending the NCAA Men’s Division I Final Four basketball semifinals in Indianapolis when he had a chance encounter with University of
Pittsburgh men’s basketball coach Jamie Dixon.
Jamie had just completed his third year as the head coach at Pitt,
where the team’s recent trajectory had left little doubt about his ability to
take over following the departure of Ben Howland. John, meanwhile, had
helped coach the Sto-Rox High School men’s basketball team to multiple
titles, and built a summer league he’d started as a way to get his young
players experience into one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast.
“[Jamie] said, these leagues you do for the high schools are great,”
says John, “and he said, how come you don’t do one for the college
guys?”
John says that at that time he’d yet to consider it, but then again, he’d
never had the backing of a Division I coach like Jamie.
A week later, John started in on the paperwork to the get the idea
certified by the NCAA, but then news broke that Jamie’s sister, Maggie,
had passed away suddenly. The news followed Maggie’s promising
introductory year coaching the women’s basketball team at the United
States Military Academy.
“I sort of put the brakes on it,” says John. “I was like, I’m not bothering
this guy.”
Shortly thereafter, though, he got a call from Jamie asking if everything
was ready to go.
“He said, ‘I just got to keep moving, this way I don’t think about it’,”
says John.
Over the next six years, John developed the Pittsburgh Basketball
Club’s pro-am league in much the same way he’d built the organization’s
younger leagues, into one that encompassed some of the best basketball
talent in the region. Now, he says, it’s hard to find a seat at games, which
are usually attended by the general public and Division I coaches alike,
all eager to see how players are shaping up for the coming season.
As the PBC enters its nineteenth season, John is bringing the pro-am
back to his alma mater for a series of six games that will take place at
Montour’s new, state-of-the-art athletic facility. Three games will take
place on July 10 and 17 each, and feature players from the University of
Pittsburgh, West Virginia University, Robert Morris University,
Duquense, Youngstown State, and others. The games are free to the
public, and while there, attendees will get the chance to meet players
between games.
“It’s a great preview of the upcoming college basketball season,” says
John about the league, which will play the rest of its games at the
STORY BY
DOUG HUGHEY
Greentree Sportsplex, where the league has played in the past.
John says the ample parking and seating at Montour, both of which
are more limited in Greentree, will be a benefit. Mitch Galiyas, who
retired as Montour’s athletic director in June, points out that the
games will bring an influx of people into the community, and he says
that he hopes that the PBC will bring other leagues to Montour in the
future.
John credits the original idea of bringing the PBC Pro-Am to
Montour to Assistant Superintendent Jason Burik.
“As soon as that sports complex started to become a reality, the
wheels started to turn for Jason,” says John.
He says the PBC would have held games there last year, if it not for
the fact that the athletic center was still being finished.
“I thought it would be a great way to showcase our new athletic
center,” says Jason, “and would serve as an avenue to continue to
generate interest in basketball at Montour.”
At Montour, the basketball program has already been generating
considerable interest under head coach Adam Kaufman, whose teams
have handed him two AAA WPIAL titles in three years, put themselves in the semi-finals three times, and in the finals twice. Leading
the team this past season in scoring was guard Devin Wilson, who
has since graduated and committed to Virginia Tech. Though Devin
lives within walking distance of the school, John says NCAA rules
preempt a student who has yet to enroll from participating.
Among those who attendees will get to see are returning Pitt players
Talib Zanna and Lamar Patterson, along with recent Rutgers transfer
Derrick Randall, and incoming freshman Mike Young. Sophomore Pitt
guard James Robinson is also supposed to play once he returns from
Prague, where he’s playing for the USA Basketball U19 National
Team. John says he’s personally excited to see Derrick Colter, as
he’s coming off a standout freshman season at Duquense, and
Kendrick Perry, who’s now in his third year at Youngstown State.
“This kid has pro written all over him,” says John.
If this year is anything like others, coaches in attendance will
include Jamie, Bob Huggins, and Andy Toole, each of whom are
taking their teams into pivotal seasons. For WVU, the coming season
marks its second in the SEC, after a disappointing introductory one.
Pitt, meanwhile, is poising for its first run in the ACC after departing
the defense-heavy, grind-it-out Big East, while RMU continues to
generate attention after nearly beating Villanova in the NCAA
tournament in 2010, and handing reigning national champs Kentucky
an early exit from the NIT last season.
For John, this year’s pro-am marks a long overdue homecoming,
one that will be attended by coaches and faculty members who he
himself coached under former Montour basketball coach Eddie
Wavchko in the mid-1980’s. Among them are Adam Kaufman and
Jason Burik.
“I don’t know if that makes me feel old or what,” says John, saying
that in either way “it’s really heartwarming to see these
former players now coaching.”
