Some of the Mothers’ Club activities include: • New student welcome picnic • Moms’ Welcome Social • Mother/Son Dance • National Honor Society Induction •Advent Prayer Service and Dinner • Staff Appreciation and Super Mondays • Mother/Daughter Fashion Show • Men of Miege Breakfast • Senior Midnight Breakfast • Baccalaureate Reception Miege Activities Booster Club The purpose of the Miege Activities Booster Club is to support student activities at Miege (both athletic and non-athletic). Specifically their goals are to: • Coordinate and support all parent activities • Provide a forum to bring ideas for new parent involvement or activities • Be a sounding board for the school • Facilitate more parent involvement In addition to the above goals, the MABC sponsors and supports a wide range of activities. They meet throughout the school year to plan and organize student and parent activities to promote Bishop Miege High School. Some of their projects include the Safe Home program, student mixers, parent socials and the welcome picnic. BISHOP MIEGE FOUNDATION DINNER Among the highlights of the Bishop Miege Foundation Dinner on Nov. 5, 2011, was the presentation of the Herbert Rome Stewardship Award. The 2011 recipient was Bernie Madden, who was introduced by Foundation Board Chairman Larry Gates and recognized for his longtime, exceptional support of Bishop Miege High School. Bernie was accompanied by his wife, Jackie, and their children Michelle MaddenMiller ’79, Mike ’81, Mary Madden-Bryson ’82, Denise Madden-Jurden ’83, Patrick ’85 and Paul ’90. ALUMNus OF THE YEAR: Steve Shondell ’73 The Bishop Miege Alumni of the Year Award is presented to a graduate who has given his or her time, talents and loyalty to enhance Bishop Miege and its traditions. Steve is the son of the late Jim and Rose Marie Shondell. Steve comes from a family known for their long-time support of Bishop Miege. His father, Jim, was posthumously recognized for his dedicated efforts in the building of Bishop Miege’s first stadium, Koch stadium in 1969. Steve is one of six Shondell children who attended Bishop Miege. Steve was a member of the 1972 Kansas 4-A State Championship Team. That year, the team was rated number one in the city and state under Coach Len Mohlman. He married Sheryl Theno, also Class of 1973 and they have 4 children: Heather, Courtney, and twins, Stevie and Malory. As an alumnus, Steve has followed in his family tradition of tireless and dedicated support of Bishop Miege. Steve has been a director of the Miege Open Golf Tournament for over 20 years, a leader in our Campaign to build Dixon Doll Stadium and also participated in our drives to build the Kincaid Media Center and renovate the St. Angela Merici Chapel, as well as supporting many other Bishop Miege projects throughout the years. BI S HOP M I E G E H IG H S C HO OL 7 F undraisers and e v ents MIEGE OPEN GOLF Tournament Bishop Miege hosted the 33rd Annual Golf Tournament at a new location on June 25, 2012. Deer Creek Golf Club in Overland Park was the picturesque site for Alumni and generous Miege supporters to gather for great golf, silent auction, dinner and awards. The very warm day did not keep players from enjoying themselves for a worthy cause. Afterwards, golfers relaxed with a full BBQ dinner buffet, bid on great auction items and garnered many awards. Bob Frazier, Chairman of the Miege Open, expressed his pleasure with the event and what benefit it has been for Miege students over the years. The 2012 tournament brought in more than $25,000. Over the past 33 years, the Miege Open has raised in excess of $375,000 to provide students in need with crucial financial assistance in order to attend Bishop Miege High School and receive an exceptional Catholic education. 2012 Winners of the Tom Sullivan Challenge are: John Houlehan, Paul Dow, Phil Mapes and Jerry Lozier After careful consideration this fall, Bob Frazier and the Miege Open Board determined that the Miege Open tournament has come to an end due to steadily increasing expenses and declining revenue. Frazier wrote: Dear Friends, After several meetings with school personnel, board members and other committed supporters I have come to the resolution that the Miege Golf Tournament has run its course. The last five years, despite increased effort by several board members and other committed friends, the net revenue from the tournament has continued to decline, while the cost of educating the students has continued to increase. Given that data and the amount of time, cost and effort it takes to produce it leads me to believe that curtailing the tournament is the best course of action. The good news is the Bob Frazier Scholarship Program will continue. The dollars in the corpus, some $160,000, will be put in the school’s endowment fund. It will be administered by the Bishop Miege Foundation so that monies from the fund will be applied, along with other scholarship dollars, in order to provide eight scholarships annually for needy students. Thus, all of our work and effort on the Miege Open will continue to benefit Miege families for years to come. I want to offer my sincere appreciation to all who have done so much for so many years to generate $378,366 for the scholarships for 116 students. You have been responsible for changing the lives of many young people through your donation of time and dollars. The scholarship recipients and I extend to each of you our heartfelt thanks. Amid a splash of spring colors, talented auctioneers enticed bidders to be winners and raise funds for the students at Bishop Miege. Mary Passantino was the happy winner of the 2012 Nissan Altima from State Line Nissan and Don and Patty Kincaid. For nearly 40 years, the Auction has been Miege’s premier fundraiser. The 2012 event was no different, bringing in over $200,000 through grand live and silent auctions, drawings and the newest promotion, a dessert auction featuring divinely beautiful edible creations. Fund-a-Need raised an additional $106,150 in scholarship funds for students facing economic difficulties. 10 2 0 1 1 -2 0 1 2 A N N UA L R E P ORT n BI S HOP M I E G E H IG H S C HO OL SAVE THE DATE SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2013 Bishop Miege 40th annual BENEFIT auction CARRYING success FORWARD As another year passes, Miege students continue to give our school community reasons to feel proud about the work being done in our classrooms. Bishop Miege offers the only three-year comprehensive ACT preparation program in the area, and it is designed to give our students a measurable advantage in their pursuit of a college education. The average scholarship amount offered to Miege graduates climbed again in 2012, and the last three graduating classes have earned an average of $25,000 to $32,000 per student, which are tied directly to ACT scores. The truest measure of effectiveness is to assess the growth of student scores from the time they enter school until they graduate. This “actual growth” score is then compared to an “expected growth” based on normed ACT data. The goal is to exceed the “expected growth.” Donations and reservations now being accepted online, or contact Merritt McShane at mmcshane@bishopmiege.com or 913-262-2701 x264 They are among just 16,000 semifinalists, who represent fewer than one percent of U.S. seniors. Meanwhile Rachel Schaff, Megan Wancura, and Laura DeDecker (below) received recognition as National Merit Commended Students for their performance on the PSAT. Gray and fellow seniors Daniel Mitchell and Andy Slettehaugh also deserve big congratulations for scoring 35s on the ACT. Throughout this Annual Report, we hope you take note of some of the other good things happening every day at Miege, and know that it is your support that makes them possible. Daniel Mitchell Andy Slettehaugh The Class of 2012 far exceeded the expected growth, with 68 percent of the class meeting or surpassing the top of the expected range of growth. Furthermore, 11.2 percent of the class scored 30 or above on the test! This year’s seniors, along with the rest of the student body, are already building upon Miege’s past successes. For example, Catherine Strayhall and Russell Gray (above) qualified as National Merit semifinalists by virtue of their scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. 11 KEEPING BISHOP Annual Fund Y e a r-to-Y e a r oper ation Why give to bishop miege Today? Stag debaters have finished either first or second in the state tournament in 14 of the past 16 years as they prepare for this year’s tournament. In October 2012, The Laura DeDecker National Forensic League recognized Bishop Miege’s speech and debate program as one of the nation’s finest. Miege earned a spot on the league’s “200 Club,” which recognizes Melissa Reynolds programs earning 200 degrees or more in the last year. Teams earn degrees by the number of students enrolled in a debating program, and the points earned in competition. The 200 Club recognizes the top 5 percent of league chapters nationwide. This fall, the NFL also honored Mrs. Melissa Reynolds with her fifth “Diamond Award,” which recognizes a professional career of excellence and longevity. In addition, the league named senior Laura DeDecker an Academic All-American. 17 A NN UA L F U ND GI V I NG I N 201 1-201 2 Jim Fiorini Lucy Reilly Fitch Tom Graham Phil Hodes Loretta Sanderson Klamm Jeanne Connolly Kohlberg Kelli Lees Cruz Carolyn Pickert Maier Amy Macan Obermueller Anita McConniff Orrick Michael Orrick Phillip Reyes Manuel Rios Steve Sell John Shonfelt Kathy Rinella Strecker Class of 1982 Total: $2,580.00 # in class 233 = 8% Denise Jordan Brown Kathy Bichlmeier David Bob Fagan Patti Gibbons Heck Susanne Vohs Henton Frank Jurden Mary Madden Bryson Connie Carr Mikelait Jane Sittenauer Muraski Kay Strick Newell David Pickert Ken Price Serena Staley Price Mary Isbell Russell 18 2 0 1 1 -2 0 1 2 Linda Abram Smart Melissa Snider Jean Lacy Stoa Kurt Van Keppel Lynn Sanderson Weist Class of 1983 Total: $1,647.50 # in class 249 = 4% Diane Altman Barr Bill Creach Libby DeBauge Ann Gladbach Graham Cathy Hosty Hair Denise Madden-Jurden Mary Kay Koehler Mitchell Debbie Cawley Moeller Jim Monty Jill St. Martin Pittman Dan Spellman Tim Taylor Class of 1984 Total: $4,125.00 # in class 233 = 2% Diane Chezek Browne Suzette Shatto Clark Bob Faherty Patrice Rome Maloney Amy Jacquinot Riscoe Linda Hansel Van Thullenar A N N UA L R E P ORT n BI S HOP M I E G E H IG H S C HO OL Class of 1985 Class of 1987 Class of 1989 Total: $612.50 # in class 236 = 5% Jennifer Johnston Boudreau Carolyn Cawley Kathleen O’Brien Coode Sara Dougherty Mark Lacy Joseph Orrick Sheila LaFavor Pitt Kathleen Brosnan Rechtien Robert Riscoe Lorraine Hummell Silkman Carol Fiala Sirokman Mary Ann Galvin Vogt Rich Vogt Total: $490.00 # in class 269 = 3% Amy Zamierowski Carman Deanna Dercher Gish Chris Mann Sherrie Behner Mann Stacy Warhurst Rice Monica Holthaus Robertson Scott Schemmel Jack Stoerman Colette Sanderson Winklhofer Total: $1,865.00 # in class 251 = 2% Michael Bastasch Molly Cooke Brandsma Mary Hendricks Duff Marcye Stuhlman Lange Joe Owens Katy North Stoerman Don Welsh Class of 1986 Total: $1,275.00 # in class 213 = 6% Joe Fahlstrom Brian FitzGerald Beth Ryan Jackson Vincent Koehler Jennifer Wagner Lynch Michelle Cawley Masoner Mary Gleissner McCaul Todd Richardson Ken Scheve Melissa Blumel Scheve Mary Kay Spiegelhalter Dan Tumberger Shelley Rudolph Tumberger Dan Wilkus Class of 1988 Total: $1,615.00 # in class 230 = 6% Romano DeMarco Libby Wedeking DePinto Amy Campin Goebel Jennifer Walsh Greene Margie Nass Huggins Angie Mufic Koetting Mark Koetting Mary Sue Rinella LeBourveau Andrew Lutz Jeralyn Pilsl Lutz Angie Wesonig McGrath Ryan McNaughton Tricia Decoursey Stark Ted Sullivan Paul Wagner Cheryl Burns Williams Class of 1990 Total: $1,910.00 # in class 228 = 8% Cecelia Infante Bethel Chad Boydston Jennifer Jennings Boydston Joanie Nass Brady Casey Regan Braun Dave Doeren Jeff Flannery Jenny Tylicki Fontaine David Glynn Kerry Bohaty Glynn Carol Fahlstrom Higgerson Paula DeMarco Long Michelle Mulik Carey Pawlowski Angie Moritz Pedrotti Marc Pedrotti Tim Platt Bob Van Cleave Leslie Elsener Warlen Mary Vohs Wilcox Class of 1991 Class of 1996 Class of 2000 Class of 2007 Total: $2,235.00 # in class 164 = 6% Joe Andrade Jenny Cawley Jenny McCarthy De Cicco David Herr Tony Jaime Amy Heit Morfeld Julie Lipari Olivas Veronica Thoennes Quinn Joan Reiser Mike Voll Nichole Newcomer Yannette Total: $214.28 # in class 156 = 1% Tim Burger Stephanie Lee Coatney Total: $171.76 # in class 193 = 1% Janelle Decker Alan Peel Katie Verschelden Total: $10.00 # in class 251 = 1% Kristen Tremonti Total: $440.00 # in class 160 = 3% Jacob Cummings Mallie Wohler DeLarber Andrew Marino David Mogren Joe Walberg Class of 2001 Class of 1993 Class of 1998 Class of 2003 Total: $1,375.00 # in class 181 = 4% Shannon Decker Benes P. CMT was instituted to provide students an opportunity to minister to the Miege community. This is an optional program that invites all students to create activities and opportunities to serve fellow students. CMT consists of several committees that help plan liturgies, prayer services, organize social justice programs such as Unitown, and heritage panels, Miegians for Life, T.A.P. (Teens Acting for Peace), plan retreats, and serve as peer ministers. Students meet regularly during activity periods and before and after school. This proud legacy is now under the direction of Ms. Sonya Salazar. 19 What is PLANNED GIVING? A “planned gift” can be one you give immediately, such as stocks, property or other assets. Or, it can be one you give later, through a bequest in your Will or a Trust. Making a “planned gift” can be extremely easy. For example, you can add “Bishop Miege High School, Shawnee Mission, KS” as a partial or total beneficiary of your life insurance, IRA, pension account or other investment account. A “planned gift” provides future support to Bishop Miege and offers you the opportunity to extend your legacy of faith beyond your own lifetime. “Planned Giving” necessitates some advanced planning to properly transfer assets. This type of giving typically involves deferred gifts to the school. Thank you for your consideration. PRESERVE the PAST PROVIDE for the FUTURE One of the hallmarks of Bishop Miege High School is the tremendous support received from our alumni, parents and friends. This show of generosity has provided $25 million in capital improvements over the past decade. The total renovation of our educational facility and our athletic facilities will serve students for years to come. Currently, we are faced with the challenge of an unstable economy and the rising number of families who seek a quality faith-filled education for their son/daughter, but do not have the necessary resources to provide one. To insure the growth and a secure future, we look to other means of support for the school; thus, the Bishop Miege Legacy Society/Endowment Fund. 20 2 0 1 1 -2 0 1 2 A N N UA L R E P ORT n BI S HOP M I E G E H IG H S C HO OL Types of PLANNED gifts • Bequests: Designate a gift to Bishop Miege in your will or trust • Charitable Gift Annuity: In return for a donation, receive a fixed income for life • Charitable Remainder Trust: Transfer assets irrevocably to a trust, receive an income for life and the remainder goes to Bishop Miege upon your death. •R etained Life Estate: Donate your residence to Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on a certificate of deposit, an annuity, IRA or retirement plan. •L ife Insurance: Designate Bishop Miege as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy or gift a policy you no longer need. Liturgy is celebrated in a variety of settings, including the total school community, grade level, class retreats and individual theology classes. Mass is held in our chapel on a weekly basis. Parents, alumni and friends are invited to attend our monthly all-school mass. Two communal reconciliation services are held each year for all students during Advent and Lent, and adoration is done throughout the year. Student are guided through a series of theological studies throughout high school, with required Theology classes across all grades. Meanwhile, all teachers present Catholic Infusion lessons in their regular classes, and faculty members continue their study of the Catechism with eight half-days dedicated to faith formation. 27 C U MU L AT IV E GI V I NG I N 201 1-201 2 Paula Brunner L. To ensure the incoming freshmen transition into high school comfortably and positively, Miege senior leaders spend the day helping 9th graders getting acquainted with one another through discussions, games and other fun teambuilding activities. The groups also attend mass together. The experience is rewarding for the seniors as well, who remember their first days at Miege and enjoy the opportunity to help prepare younger students for high school. When the day is over, the freshmen are “officially” welcomed into the student body during halftime of the first home football game. 33 C U MU L AT IV E GI V I NG I N 201 1-201 2 Dorothy Beattie Robert Bens Ginny Bertrand Cecelia Bethel Richard Bollig Judy Bond Charles and Elaine Borchers Joanie Brady Mary Ann Braun Linda Brossard Scott and Linda Brownlee Bridget Burns Mary Ellen Byrne Janice Caggianello John and Lori Callahan Kathy Calvert Max and Liz Cerda Ed and Marsha Chezek James and Janice Christoph Trisha Coleman Joanne Commins Ellen Condry Marcia Conley Peter and Julie Cooke Doug Couch Kathy Craig Jim and Kathy Crews Catherine Criqui Steve DeBauge Bill DeCoursey Mallie DeLarber Diane Van Thullenar Ronnie Vaughn Mary Viveros Dick Vogt Bob and Judy Vohs Mike Voll Oavieng and Jennifer Voravong Patty Walsh Ray and Mary Walsh Dan and Teresa Wancura Marilyn Watson Vince and Jan Weiss Paula Welch Greg and Danielle Wilcox Tom Wilkes Rosalind Willey John Wills - State Farm Insurance Polly Wimer Mary Ellen Winter Rick and Laura Worms Brian and Susan Wyssmann Tom Younger John Ziegelmeyer Frank and Kris Zondca Advocates: $25 - $49 Megan Allam Bob Allen Larry and Barb Allen Nick Amey Diane Barr 34 2 0 1 1 -2 0 1 2 A N N UA L R E P ORT n BI S HOP M I E G E H IG H S C HO OL Dan Dercher Kathleen Dickinson Scott Diebold Paul Digiovanni Patrick Doherty Joe and Pat Dold Carol Doring Dave and Mary Beth Dover Tom Doyle Jim and Dorothy Easterday Megan Easterday William Edwards Michael and Kimberly Effertz Michael and Louise Elbein Greg and Nancy Ellermann Nancy Ellis David and Janice Evans Joann Feehan Don Fields Jenny Fontaine Julia Ford Stephanie Foster Justin Francis Mary Frerking Steven and Ruth Fritts Sabin and Myong Fuentes Pat Gallagher Penny Gamm Michael Gassman Michael and Mary Gentry Bob and Clara George Janice Gillihan Mike Glaeser Janet Glarner Tom and Marianne Glavinich Don Glenn Bruce Graham Tom Grant Sophie Grebowiec George and Wanda Gregar Judy Gregar Dean Gustafson Tim Hannon Theresa Healy Patti Heck Molly Helling Susanne Henton Mary Hepworth Mary Sue Hermes Kathy Hines Jim Hippmann Judy Hollinger Justin Hoover Sandy Horvat Steve Hudson Margie Huggins Alan and Deena Hutsell Beth Jackson William Kapp Sharon Kaszar Dwayne and Sandy Katzer Connie Keehn Clancy Merrill John and Hillary Merryfield Jackie Metheny Janet Miscannon David Mogren Susan Molen Judy Morr Frank Mufic Jane Muraski Cindy Murphy McMahon Jean Nickel Don Palermo Sam Panis Joseph and Cheryl Parisi Suzann Parrish Pat Patti Alan Peel Harry and Martha Peel Michael and Kathleen Pendergast Lamont and Erika Phillips Linda Pippin JoAnne Platt Tim Platt Bill and Ann Powell Mike Prior Gene and Pat Propp Benjamin Purcell Tim Quigley Veronica Quinn Paul Redmond Judy Rehmert Bob Kellerman Donna Kerr Lynn Kirchhoff Margaret Kirkpatrick Russell and Jennifer Klein Shandin Klobe Gigi Knox Vincent Koehler Mark and Angie Koetting Jeanne Kohlberg Craig Kuhn Kara Kurtenbach Diane Kusman Jerry and Sharon Lacy Everett and Sara Lanter Martha Lawler Cathleen Lillis Richard and Valerie Lumley Helen Lynch Tim and Caroline Mahoney Chris and Sherrie Mann Amy Marlo Ed and Ansie Marquette John and Mary Martin Kathy Maxwell Mary McCaul Angie McGrath Jane McMahon Megan McMahon Molly McMahon Sharon McQuerry-Lacy 2 0 1 1 -2 0 1 2 A N N UA L R E P ORT n BI S HOP M I E G E H IG H S C HO OL Joan Reiser Pamela Renfrow Ann Reynolds Mike Rhoades Stacy Rice Todd Richardson Robert and Amy Riscoe Jeanne Ritz John Roche Paula Rome John and Therese Roseburrough Gretchen Roth Pat and Susan Rowland Dennis Rues Dan and Joni Rundle Carl and Debora Ryffe Randy and Mary Lynn Salisbury Judi Salo Steve Scanlon Coletta Schmidt Jennifer Schneller John and Julie Schneller Kathleen Schoeffler Mary Sedlacek Joan Seichepine Lamont and Leisa Semien Paul Serrone - LaBodega Mike and Amy Shartzer Lorraine Silkman Carol Sirokman Daniel and Patti Slosburg With the excellent leadership of our student council and the help of many volunteers, Bishop Miege continues to enjoy very successful student fundraisers throughout the year to help meet our annual operating expenses.
