Mayor Dennis Clough joined Drs. Khaled Issa, Craig Harris and Edmond Blades, all acknowledged leaders in this important specialty, for the ribbon-cutting. “We are very proud to have you here in the City of Westlake. You bring a standard of excellence that sets you and our community apart,” said the Mayor. Drivers along the Bradley-Clemens corridor, will appreciate Westlake architect Steven Schill’s facility design. With elevated intentions of patient service within, the building exterior and streetscape looks and feels more like a spa than a medical facility. Welcome Noma Dakhil-Jouma, MD Cutting edge amenities are available on both comfort and high-tech fronts inside. Dr. Issa and the North Ohio Gastroenterology team worked closely to create a model practice that offers leading edge components in all categories. “We are almost paperless,” said Dr. Issa of the practice’s conformity to coming standards of electronic patient records. “And we have made every effort to make the facility very patient friendly, from its location to the amenities inside.” Everything inside is high-tech. The best in computer-based screening and diagnostic equipment is on site. 12,000 square feet in all, 11 exam rooms, endoscopy unit, with three procedural suites and even 42 inch plasma monitors for doctors to view procedures. It is all done with patient service and privacy in mind. Yes, there is a sensitivity required of addressing gastrointestinal issues and procedures. North Ohio Gastroenterology is committed to protecting the privacy of patients with compassion and care. The nine, large, private recovery rooms are a good example of this commitment. Drs. Issa, Harris and Blades are recognized regional leaders in the specialty. Dr. Issa was the Chair of Endoscopy at MetroHealth Medical Center for 10 years and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case. He is the Director of Endoscopy at St. John West Shore Hospital and also has privileges at Lakewood, Fairview and MetroHealth hospitals. Dr. Harris has been in private practice since 1981. He did his fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic and has privileges at Fairview, St. John West Shore and Lakewood Hospitals. Dr. Blades is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He formerly directed University Hospitals’ Endoscopy Unit and its gastroenterology fellowship training program. His privileges are at St. John West Shore, Lakewood and Fairview Hospitals. An exciting addition to the staff is Dr. Noma Dakhil, a female specialist who will join the North Ohio Gastroenterology team in November! “She has an interest in women’s gastroenterology and this is something that the community has wanted for a long time,” reports Petra Boesinger, Administrator. “She is a very exciting addition to our team and to our practice in the community.” The real importance of North Ohio Gastroenterology, however, is community health! Colon cancer ranks as the third leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States. The problem is colon cancer may often show no symptoms until the advanced stages. More than 90 percent of patients diagnosed with colon cancer are aged 50 and older. North Ohio Gastroenterology exists to protect community health from a common but treatable threat. They urge people, especially 50 and over, to have a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening even if they are symptom free. Edmond Blades, M.D. Craig Harris, M.D. Noma Dakhil-Jouma, M.D. Khaled Issa, M.D. The physicians of North Ohio Gastroenterology specialize in all aspects of gastroenterology care. Dr. Noma Dakhil-Jouma also has a special interest in women’s wellness. The Caring Continues: A Fundraiser for Local Cancer Patients Imagine being so sick with cancer that you can’t afford to have the disease! That unthinkable scenario is sadly common for many in the West Shore who enter treatment. They may then be unable to work, earn enough to maintain house payments or insurance premiums or, sometimes, even afford groceries. Want to help? Taking place on Saturday, November 7 at the Lakewood Elks Lodge in Westlake, a tasty buffet dinner and reverse raffle with sideboards benefits the Caring Continues Fund providing financial aid to adult cancer patients receiving treatment at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center at Fairview Hospital. The “Caring Continues” Fundraiser was initiated by long-time West Shore residents Bill Cochrane and his sister, KC Cimo, four years ago. Bill and KC teamed up with the Community West Foundation and the Moll Cancer Center to raise resources for the Caring Continues Fund to help people facing hardships while undergoing treatment for cancer. Bill lost his wife, Barbara, to cancer in 2004 and created “Caring Continues” as a means of transforming the tremendous grief of her loss into something positive. Bill’s legacy to Barbara’s spirit and commitment lives on through the Caring Continues event in her honor. “It is amazing to realize that many people can’t afford to have cancer,” said Bill. “It is unbelievable, but true. And that is why we started this event.” Through the generosity of supporters, the Oncology Social Workers at Moll Cancer Center were able to help approximately 200 patients in 2008 with rent, utilities, medication, car payments, and transportation to medical appointments. They also provided Giant Eagle gift cards to assist with gasoline and food expenses. Over 200 people from the community, many of whom have been impacted by cancer in some way, will gather together to enjoy an evening of dinner, reverse raffle, sideboards and some great silent auction items generously donated by local businesses. It will be a great night and a great way to express gratitude for the help and support received at the Moll Cancer Center. Several patients of the Moll Center offered personal testimonials at last year’s event. “Cancer is devastating, and treatment can be very hard,” said one man who underwent simultaneous chemo and radiation therapies that prevent his from maintaining his earning ability. “This group and the people at the Moll Center meant so much to me and my wife,” he said. “No, it did not fix everything. But it gave us a beacon of hope when we needed one the most.” Dr. Timothy Spiro, Director of the Moll Cancer Center at Fairview Hospital, emphasized the importance of the community’s involvement in the “Caring Continues” Program. “The support of this group is so important to the people we serve,” said Dr. Spiro. “Cancer can be a devastating disease. It is made more challenging when patients are unable to work and maintain their paychecks. Imagine the hardships of battling this disease and then also struggling to keep up with Bill Cochrane & KC Cimo house payments, insurance and medical bills, and even groceries. The work of this program cannot be underestimated. We are so very, very grateful for their support.” See you there! The Caring Continues Fundraiser will be hosted Nov. 7 at the Lakewood Elks Club at 24350 Center Ridge Road in Westlake. Tickets are on a presale basis only. If you would like to participate in or contribute to this event please email pat.kubene@cwfc.org or call Community West Foundation at (216) 476-7060. Fairview, Lakewood and Lutheran Hospitals honored eight individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to improving our communities. The annual Community Service Awards 2009 luncheon was hosted at LaCentre in Westlake on Sept. 29. “From developing programs that care for our elderly to economic development Western Region, Lakewood Hospital and a number of other area service groups. Father John J. Cregan – Pastor, Our Lady of Angels Parish, and Catholic Chaplain of the Cleveland Police Dept., Fr. Cregan was born to family of police officers. But as a senior at St. Ignatius High in the ‘50s, he responded to a higher calling after hearing a priest speak at a 2009 Community Service Award Winners Left to Right: Peggy Zone Fisher, President & CEO The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio; Fred M. DeGrandis, President and CEO, Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals; Lucille M. Sinagra, Member Lakewood Library Foundation; Stephanie Morrison Hrbek, Executive Director Near West Theatre; Curtis M. Brosky, Lakewood Senior Citizens, Inc.; Betty Kemper, President & CEO Kemper Compan; Rev. John Cregan, Pastor Our Lady of Angels; Jean A. Rounds, Retired Principal Goldwood Primary School, Rocky River OH; Edward FitzGerald, Mayor City of Lakewood to serving our communities through innovative programs, each of our honorees has been instrumental in making a difference to residents of the west side,” said Fred DeGrandis, President and CEO Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals. “The fifth annual Community Service Awards recognized individuals who address a variety of needs for our many neighborhood organizations,” said DeGrandis. “They share some common values: dedication, generosity, commitment and a passion for helping others.” This year’s Community Service Award winners are: Curtis M Brosky – President and CEO Lakewood Senior Citizens (LSC) Service Corp., Mr. Brosky came to Cleveland 30 years ago with Jones & Laughlin/LTV Steel. His community involvement led him to a successful career. A longtime Jaycees leader, he calls the group a “portal to other service organizations.” It led to his involvement with LSC, where he is responsible for the day-to-day operations of nearly 1000 apartments in five non-profit senior citizen apartment complexes. He also oversees Barton Senior Center, Barton Center Memorial Foundation, and West Shore Senior Center. He is proud of the role he plays in the LSC mission: To provide safe, secure, and affordable housing that enriches the quality of life for its residents. He is also on the Board of Trustees of the Cleveland Clinic – career day program. After his ordination, he returned to his roots and became Catholic Chaplain to the Cleveland Police in 1968. 41 years later, he still serves at this post. He provides vital support to the Cleveland community, police and firemen, and serves as Pastor of Our Lady of Angels Parish, his fifth pastoral appointment in his career and a post he has held since 1987. Fr. Cregan considers his police work central to his ministry. The hardest part is notifying families when a loved one has lost a life in the line of duty. “I feel honored when I’m asked to help a member of the safety forces,” he said. “I assure them of my daily prayers for their safety and protections as I ask God to bless them and their families.” Peggy Zone Fisher – President and CEP The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio, Peggy Zone learned the importance of public service as a child. Her parents, Michael and Peggy Zone, each served on Cleveland City Council. “They taught us to have courage and to do the right thing,” said Peggy. “They taught us that the world is far bigger than our on community.” After serving as President and CEO of Zone Travel for more than 30 years, Peggy stepped into a leadership role with The Diversity Center. Zone Travel was recognized as one of the largest women owned businesses in Cleveland, and she served as one of 11 National Commissioners of The White House Conference on Small Business under President Bill Clinton. Within her first year of leadership at The Diversity Center, she engineered a rebranding campaign for the organization, which was founded in 1927 as The National Conference for Christians and Jews. “The choices you make in your life need to be led by your passion,” she said. “If you stay open to new possibilities, you end up doing what you are meant to do.” The Honorable Edward FitzGerald – Mayor Ed FitzGerald is a third generation Lakewood resident. After college, he served as a staff member in the United States House of Representatives. He later worked as a Special Agent for the FBI and was honored for leading an extensive investigation into organized crime and corruption in Chicago. In 1999, he assumed the role of a supervising prosecutor for Cuyahoga County and lent leadership and vision as a community volunteer. Appointments such as Chairman of the Zoning Board in Lakewood, Children’s Trust Fund of Cuyahoga County and election to City Council led to his run for Mayor in 2007. He won by the largest margin in 20 years. Today, Mayor FitzGerald is committed to priority goals of improved city financial performance, advancements in public safety, and new and revitalized housing. A key initiative is to enhance the health and well-being of Lakewood residents. To that end, he has overseen the establishment of Healthy Lakewood Partnership and Live Well Lakewood, community education and outreach programs established in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic. Betty Kemper – President of Kemper Company, Betty Kemper learned with surprise 30 years ago, at the diagnosis of her mother-in-law’s Alzheimer’s disease, that so little information existed. As a registered nurse and an executive at Eliza Jennings House, Betty had become an expert in providing care and housing for the elderly. So, when she was promoted to CEO, Betty made it a priority to develop a program for Alzheimer’s that would be delivered by the Eliza Jennings staff. The plan distinguished the facility as one of the first in the nation to segregate Alzheimer’s care from traditional elder care. Betty then aspired to expand on her vision to assist the Alzheimer’s population. In the mid90s, she left Eliza Jennings to open Kemper House, the first freestanding facility dedicated to the treatment of Alzheimer’s in the region. Two additional facilities have since been built, including Kemper Care, a specialized program for treating dementia. Betty has also worked with Community West Foundation to establish the Memory Care Fund, which helps defray costs of training and educating those who care for Alzheimer’s patients. Betty is also involved with other initiatives, leading the revitalization of the historic Chicle Building and surrounding Cudell community, where the Kemper Company offices are located. “I have been very lucky,” said Betty. “I owe so much to my husband, John, who has always been my biggest supporter, and to my children, some of whom even work at Kemper Company. God has blessed me.” Stephanie Morrison-Hrbek – Executive Director Near West Theater, Stephanie has built on her family mission to promote social justice. Her parent, both ministers in the United Church of Christ, formed the basis of her calling to start the Summer Youth theater program on Cleveland’s near west side 30 years ago. A trained dancer and choreographer, there was no better way to use her talents than ‘to build community through social justice.’ Not just a positive recreational outlet, the program is a home and safe haven where individuals of all ages are challenged and given a chance to realize their potential. The Near West Theater now showcases the talent of both youth and adult performers, identifying it as an intergenerational theater committed to making art accessible to all individuals. Stephanie has now embarked on the organization’s boldest effort – a $6 million capital project to build new space in the Gordon Arts Square District. The initiative is a key component to revitalize the historic Detroit Shoreway neighborhood utilizing the arts as a catalyst for economic development. Jean A. Rounds – Principal of Goldwood Elementary School (retired) and Rocky River Board of Education Member, Jean Rounds new as a young girl she would someday be a teacher. During her work with the Lorain County Consortium for Gift Children, she found a calling to administration. “By supporting your staff and building relationships with your students and their parents, you can make a real impact on our children’s future,” she said. That commitment was hallmark of Jean’s tenure as Goldwood Principal for 10 years. After retirement, she won a seat on the Rocky River BOE and has served for a decade. In this role, she lends her perspective as both a former teacher and school administrator to help craft and implement critical district policies. She also serves on the boards of Community Challenge, Recovery Resources, and the Coalition for Youth Asset Development. “My family is the foundation for my strength. I’m so blessed to have such a wonderful and caring family and so many dear and caring friends within the school system and the community of Rocky River,” she said. Lucille Sinagra – Founder of the Lakewood Arts Festival, Lucille was inspired to initiate the famed after attending a similar celebration in Cocoa Beach, Fla. “I knew we could do something even more remarkable in Lakewood,” she said. That was back in 1977. Now 31 years old, the Lakewood Arts Festival presents the work of more than 160 artists and draws crowds of 15,000 each year. It is one of the most anticipated events in the Cleveland area and one of the most successful one-day shows in the state. “The Board of the Lakewood Arts Festival, the City of Lakewood, our sponsors, and of course our artists, have all stepped forward every year to make the festival a success. They deserve a great deal of thanks,” said Lucille, who is also active in a plethora of other community organizations including the Lakewood Hospital Junior Board, Lakewood Public Library Foundation, Advisory Board of the Hospice of the Western Reserve, and the Special Project for Adult Guardian Angels. Old Man in the Kitchen here, Tom. Here’s an Old Wives Tale from one of our readers. Thank you: “My mother used to tell me not to put my elbows on the table, because, if you put both elbows on the table at the same time, it could create a circuit while you are eating and you might be electrocuted.” You have to love them! They had all the smarts! Try this delicious recipe for Chicken Stew – Great and easy! 1 package (16 oz) of frozen California Blend vegetables, thawed and drained; 2 cups cubed, cooked chicken; 1 can (10-3/4 oz) Cream of Potato soup; ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (sharp, if you like); 1 tube of crescent rolls; 1 cup of milk; ½ tsp salt; ½ cup French fried onions. In bowl, combine vegetables, chicken, soup, milk, cheese, onions and salt. Transfer to a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, separate crescent dough into two rectangles. Seal perforations. Place over warm filling and bake 15 minutes or until crust is golden brown. It’s like a big chicken pot pie! Take care friends and keep the old wives stories coming.
