The dawn of an era for an iconic auto brand is good news for new car customers in the West Shore. General Motors and Spyker Cars NV announced last week that they have finalized the deal for Spyker to purchase Saab Automobile AB. Going forward, Saab and Spyker will operate under the Spyker (AMS:SPYKR) umbrella, and Spyker will assume responsibility for Saab operations. The previously announced wind down of Saab operations has ended. “This is a great day for Saab employees, dealers and suppliers, and a great day for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide,” said Jim Levine, General Sales Manager of Saab of North Olmsted. The array of high-tech features on the 9-5 offer includes: an aircraftThe official transfer of ownership from General Motors like head-up information display (Pilot HUD); adaptive lighting (Bi-Xenon to the Dutch supercar concern occurred Feb. 23. The 9-5 model is generating buzz world-wide. “We expect to have them here in June,” said Levine. “It is a brand new design from the ground up. It is a very impressive vehicle. Starting with world class safety right through to its fully turbo charged engine design, everything about this car says ‘class.’” The international press agrees. “This new, larger 9-5 looks incredibly crisp in the metal. With clean flanks, a distinctive, cantilevered roofline paired with wraparound-look glass and handsome head- and tail lamp detailing, this is an attractive, cohesive design sans adornment – no gaping ducts, fender vents, or protruding aero addenda are in evidence anywhere. Very much in the Scandinavian mold, the 9-5 pulls design elements from the showstopping Saab Aero-X concept coupe and puts them in a real-world package,” writes Chris Paukert on AutoBlog. March 2010 Page 6 Caring For Our Neighbors This past year Community West Foundation gave $5.6 million to our community, supporting Fairview Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, and 46 charitable agencies providing direct service to the needy. Here are some examples of the important ways Community West Foundation impacts our community: Would you like to Feed the Hungry? On a daily basis, one in every six people in Cleveland are hungry and can’t afford to buy food. Often, these residents are confronted by the number of days in the month outlasting their money and food supplies. At a time of increased need, people look to food banks, soup kitchens, and other local organizations for food and assistance. Programs that address the crucial need of providing food for hungry individuals throughout Cuyahoga and Lorain counties received funding through Community West Foundation. Feeding People and Changing Lives Food became a more critical need this year with the downturn in the economy. Many people who never thought they would ever need assistance for food turned to Second Harvest Food Bank. It is the largest regional hunger relief organization with a network of more than 110 member agencies serving Lorain County as well as Crawford, Erie, and Huron Counties. Community West Foundation provided $20,000 to make sure that people in our area will not go hungry, and our commitment will help keep the food pantry stocked for our neighbors in Lorain County. Second Harvest Food Bank is an amazing organization that distributes more than 4 million pounds of donated food and grocery products annually, and supports nearly 160 programs including food pantries, emergency shelters, and after-school programs. In 2008, 7,726 families sought emergency food assistance in Lorain County – a 14% increase from 2007, and it is expected to double in 2009. Children represent 42% of those served, and seniors represent 12%. In 2009, Second Harvest distributed an estimated 2.7 million pounds of food equal to 2.1 million meals to 101 programs in Lorain County. Second Harvest Food Bank Connecting Residents to Resources The Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland is a coordinated network of 54 food pantries and hot meal programs, plus 60 affiliate sites that feed 60,000 people per month - 25,000 of whom are children. As the largest provider of direct emergency food service in Cuyahoga County, the Hunger Network is the safety net for 75% of our communities’ most vulnerable citizens. The Network is able to provide four meals for every dollar raised. Requests for emergency food have risen 8% on the west side since last fall, while at the same time the cost of food has risen 10%. Community West Foundation grant funding of $14,847 for the West Side Hunger Initiative will provide more food for eleven pantry sites, nourishing our west side neighbors. Volunteers from the Hunger Network gather to prepare donations that will feed the hungry. Offering a Lifeline of Hope with Nutrition Program Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center is a faith-based Latino-focused agency serving our west side community through its mission of “challenging the root causes of systemic poverty through holistic and culturally competent service and community building.” The cornerstone program of Nueva Luz provides support services for those in the local community who have been diagnosed with the life-threatening illness of HIV/AIDS. Good nutrition is one of the most powerful weapons available for fighting the effects of HIV/AIDS. A grant from Community West Foundation for $24,000 will allow the Nutrition Program to continue to serve participating clients, most of whom are living at or below the poverty level, for one year. The nutrition program offers assistance by providing critical nutrition to food insecure The Nueva Luz Food neighbors with chronic health issues, and serves approximately 106 persons with HIV/AIDS through Pantry is stocked to help in-home delivery or pick up on-site. The food is culturally appropriate and constitutes a complete our neighbors in need. nutritious menu that is delivered with a warm smile. Join Us... Westwood Country Club Earns Top Award Westwood Country Club, Rocky River’s venerable institution for finer living, is a recipient of a prestigious design award for its new clubhouse! Golf Inc. Magazine selected Westwood Country Club for its Annual Clubhouse Competition – winning one of the two top awards in the private club category. The building was designed by Partners & Sirny Architects, a Minneapolis based architectural firm that specializes in clubhouse design. The Albert M. Higley Company of Cleveland was the general contractor. The new colonial revival style clubhouse opened in March 2009 and reflects the style of the former clubhouse, providing expanded functions in a more efficient design. Many of the old furnishings were reused to establish a strong link to the clubs past. The prestigious Northeast Ohio Club was founded in 1914. “We are pleased to honor these outstanding clubhouses,” said Katina Cavagnaro, publisher of Golf Inc. “The quality of the entries was exceptionally high.” Judges comments included “good sense of arrival,” “roof lines and elevations are simple and elegant” and “the finished product is a nice job of efficiently using the space. The fixtures are very rich traditional colors and textures.” In addition to the Award winning new clubhouse, a Caddie House was constructed and improvements to the site were made including expanded and updated parking areas with decorative light poles and fixtures, new patios were developed featuring a fire pit, a large trellis area, and gazebo, enhanced by extensive landscaping. Westwood’s 18-hole Golf Course designed by C.H. Alison also received enhancements such as a new drainage system on the greens, Some of the Board of Directors & Officers from cart paths added throughout Westwood Country Club (l-r): Bruce J. Magazine. “Its colonial revival-style architecture blends well with the separate pro shop and cart storage buildings that were retained.” Highlighted by a split-level lobby, all dining functions are on the main level and golf functions below with both an adult bar-grill and family grill. If they came up from the “Angle” at Detroit and West 25th street or the “Irish Bend” area along the river looking for a job, the stinging signs of discrimination hung on doors and windows: “Irish need not apply”. The Statue of Liberty still beckons immigrants “Yearning to be free”. Now we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day across this wonderful country. A sure sign of assimilation into our great “melting pot” that is America. Have Coach, Gucci, Louis Vuitton or Other Name Brand Hand Bags or Wallets? Need CASH?
