Leadership Message from the CEO &
the Chairman of the Board of Directors
Dear Friends of Gilda’s Club,
Our Mission:
To Support, Educate and Empower Cancer Patients and Their Families
Our free comprehensive cancer program includes support groups,
educational lectures, workshops and social events for everyone
impacted by cancer – men, women, teens, and children.
It has been 19 years since we opened our signature Red Door. In those years we have grown
exponentially, we have diversified our program, and we have broadened our reach to medical
centers in the underserved neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx.
Most importantly we have never wavered from our mission to support, educate and empower
cancer patients and their families – free of charge.
At Gilda’s Club, we have a vision that is centered around our Gilda Comes To You offsite model,
which has enabled us to bring our special community of support and education to the underserved
communities of New York City. As we move into our 20th anniversary year, we realize our vision
must expand to meet the needs of all New Yorkers living with cancer. Moving forward, we want
to ensure our free cancer support program is accessible to men, women, teens and children who
are diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones – not just at our Clubhouse in the West Village,
not just at the hospitals where they receive treatment, but also in the neighborhoods where they
work, and where they go to school, Gilda Will Come To You.
The need for our services is growing, not diminishing. The Institute of Medicine has projected
a 45% increase in cancer incidence by 2030. Cancer is part of our reality today and tomorrow.
Gilda’s Club is committed to supporting cancer patients and their families because we believe
no one should face cancer alone. We believe in the strength of our community to support,
educate and empower everyone who is living with cancer, whatever the outcome. We cannot
provide our free comprehensive cancer support program without the commitment and funds
bestowed upon us by our generous donors. Your generosity has truly made a difference for
thousands of New Yorkers living with cancer. Thank you for your continued support of our
vision and our mission.
Sincerely,
Robert J. Easton

Program
Highlights
Our free comprehensive cancer program includes support groups, educational
lectures, workshops and social events for everyone impacted by cancer – men,
woman, teens, and children.
In 2014 we have seen our program grow, evaluated how best our program can
continue to meet the needs of our members, and examined ways in which our
program can reach more individuals impacted by cancer as Gilda’s Club NYC
enters its 20th Anniversary.
Special Project Update:
PCORI Year 1 Nueva Vida Survivor
and Caregiver Research Study
In
2012,
Georgetown
University
(GU)
secured
GCNYC to be a subcontractor
in a research proposal to the
Patient-Centered Outcomes
Research Institute (PCORI) in
collaboration with three other
cancer-care
organizations:
Latinas
Contra
Cancer,
CA; Nueva Vida, D.C.; and
LatinaSHARE, NYC. Research
evidence indicates that Latina breast cancer survivors
have lower quality of life compared to non-Latina
survivors. The disparity of quality of life experienced
by Latinas is clinically significant in terms of depression,
pain, fatigue and strained family relationships. The
expected benefit of the proposed study is that Latina
survivors’ and caregivers’ quality of life will be improved.
The proposed project is targeted at evaluating the
impact of an 8-week educational program for
Latina breast cancer survivors and their caregivers
for three years. The study includes two groups of
survivor-caregiver pairs who will receive access to all

GCNYC general programming and a randomized
group who will also receive a patient-caregiver
intervention which includes attendance at eight 2-hour
educational sessions held twice a month for four months.
On November 6, 2014 we launched the first year of the
study at our Clubhouse. From the first session, participants
reported a great deal of positive feedback, particularly
around psychosocial support and the opportunity it
provided the caregiver to have a forum where they could
also express their experiences and feel validated. Each
session started with a group dinner that was filled with
lots of laughter and sharing. One participant described
this as her “date night” of the week, because she felt so
pampered and taken care of. The dyads expressed their
thoughts on the intervention at their last night. They all
wished the intervention could continue. They shared
that they had learned a lot through this experience,
improved their communication skills and were excited
to be able to help future generations of Latina survivors
and caregivers.
We are currently recruiting for the second year of the
study which we hope to launch in Spring 2015.
Another area of significant growth is our Teen and
Children’s Program, managed by Sr. Program Manager,
Youth & Families, Michele Halusic. The youth program
continues to reach more children and gain awareness in
the NYC and Long Island communities.
Our two Noogie Night support groups provide weekly
support to children that have a loved one living with
a diagnosis of cancer. Our Bereavement Noogie Night
provides weekly support for those children grieving the
death of a loved one to cancer. Twenty-seven children
are currently active members of our weekly Noogie Night
support groups
To complement the therapeutic discussion of these
groups, interactive workshops are provided. Workshops
implemented this quarter include: Interactive Yoga,
Getting Crafty with Michelle, Good Dog Foundation
visits, Cherub Improvisation, Specialized Arts & Crafts
and Furry Fun with Pet Partners.
Noogie & Teen Family Fun Nights, offered quarterly,
bring together the children and teens in our program,
along with their families to enjoy pizza and popcorn, and
watch the latest family films, such as Frozen.
Gilda’s Study Corner offered September - May continues
to provide the children in our program with homework
assistance from trained volunteers prior to their Noogie
Night support groups held each week. Ten children are
actively participating in Gilda’s Study Corner.

Our Teen Program
Our Teens Connect support group continues to be offered
on a weekly basis to our teen members that have been
impacted by cancer in any way. Teens that either had or
have a personal diagnosis, have a friend or family member
living with cancer, or are grieving the death of a loved one
to cancer participate in this special group. A total of 13
active teens are members of the program at this time.
Living with Cancer: A Teen Perspective, is edited by New
York Times best-selling author Tonya Hurley, includes
a very special foreword written by actress and GCNYC
ambassador, Emma Stone. The E-book is now available
for download from the Nook at Barnes and Noble
and the Kindle on Amazon.com. It is also available in
hard copy.
Our first E-book, titled Living
with Cancer: A Teen Perspective
- A Collection of Essays from
the Gilda’s Club New York City
Essay Contest and published by
the William Morris Endeavor
Company, is now released and
available online. It includes a
compilation of 32 selected
essays submitted during the
first four years of the “It’s
Always Something” Teen Essay
Contest. Chosen essays are
inclusive of a wide range of teen experiences in relation
to cancer.
Our 2014 First Place
winner Landon Allen,
brought in national
attention after the host
of NBC’s George to
the Rescue, chose the
Allen family to receive
a home makeover
after reading Landon’s
essay.
Our offsite program for adults, Gilda Comes to You, continues to show growth
at major medical and community centers around New York City. Our goal for
2015 and for the future will be to continue reaching New Yorkers living with
cancer in the communities where they work and live through the expansion
of Gilda Comes to You and Gilda Goes to Work cancer support programs.
It will include partnerships with a broader network of NYC medical centers
that deliver oncology services; community organizations, e.g. YMCA; and
corporations with a large employee base in New York City.
In 2014 we served 1,133 participants
at our offsite centers
We held
185 support group sessions

The Many Faces of
Gilda’s Club New York City
Meet Luis:
Gilda’s Club Member
Hello my
name is Luis, I
have a cellular
imbalance
called cancer.
Member Survey
Over a year and a half ago I was diagnosed with stage 2
Anal Cancer, I call this my imbalance.
In 2014 we administered a Member Satisfaction Survey to evaluate the effectiveness of our program
and the satisfaction of our members. Our participants are important to us and meeting their needs is
paramount to the success of our program.
I started chemo and radiation which lasted six months. By
then my imbalance had metastasized to other parts of my
body. Chemo was tried for six extra months.
Who Are
Our Members?
They parallel the diversity that is representative of
New Yorkers in income, education, ethnicity and age.
Of those who participated in our survey:
62%
22%
20%
attend Gilda’s Club after being
diagnosed with cancer
have a loved one with cancer
have lost a loved one to cancer
Most attend weekly and come to Gilda’s Club for the
support groups as well as the community.
What Do They Say?
93%
would recommend
Gilda’s Club to someone
else living with cancer
“Gilda’s Club made an enormous difference
in my life. It was one of the most important
decisions I made after being diagnosed.”
“I don’t know what I would have done
after my husband died … it made me feel
less alone.”
“I feel like the support from the weekly group
has really stayed with me, even though I no
longer attend.”
It’s this that brought me many times to the front door of
Gilda’s Club. Those moments were full of fears and doubts
like - Is Gilda’s Club only for women? Would I fit in?
I had moments of doubt when I was told I needed to go
through an interview and orientation. I thought maybe this
isn’t for me.
At the moment I was concentrating on fear and those
moments in my life when I had been rejected and told I
didn’t belong.
How wrong I was!
I feel so lucky I became a member of Gilda’s Club. Since
joining Gilda’s Club my experience has been one of pleasant
surprises.
I look forward to the meetings. In these meetings we have
moments when we laugh and cry. We have moments when
we exchange advice on ways to deal with our imbalance
called cancer.
It is at this meeting we have the courage to say out loud “I
am stopping treatment because it isn’t working anymore.”
Or to say out loud “I am trying a new experimental drug.”
It’s at these meetings that we have moments when we talk
about personal challenges and we find solutions to them
with the help of the facilitator and other group members.
It’s at these meetings where we exchange news and ideas
about alternative medicine and nutrition.
Gilda’s Club has brought happiness and pain to my life. Like
when a friend’s imbalance goes into remission and we all
celebrate and rejoice with her or him. Or when a friend
transitions to a new reality, we cry and treasure more the
moments we spent together at Gilda’s Club.
Many people advised me not to be around people who
concentrate on pain, fear and death. How wrong they were.
Gilda’s Club has given me and my family so much more
than meetings. It has given my partner a place to go and
find other caregivers — a place to unload and say things
we can’t say to each other’s face.
Gilda’s Club has given me tools to become my best
advocate in front of doctors, lawyers, insurance companies
and others.
Gilda’s Club has allowed me to get in touch with the artist
in me by offering art workshops and classes in multiple
subjects. Gilda’s Club and its members have given me ideas
and insights as to how to navigate this new reality with my
partner, my kids, their mother, my mother and my friends.
All this has made me value every moment with everyone.
I have learned to be in the present moment, count my
blessings and to concentrate on love.
These meetings are for me, moments in my life that I
appreciate and share with my loved ones.
And Gilda’s Club has brought new loved ones to my life.

EMCOR/Penguin Pink Hard Hat Ribbon
On October 7, 2014 the employees of EMCOR/Penguin,
along with tenants of the Alexandria Center for Life
Science, Gilda’s Club NYC volunteers and members, and
more, donned EMCOR Pink Hard Hats and assembled to
form a 750 person giant human pink ribbon in a “Call to
Action” in support of breast cancer awareness as part of
EMCOR’s “Protect Yourself. Get Screened Today.”
campaign. It was the largest Pink Hard Hat Ribbon ever
formed in New York City.
A $115,000 check, the result of individual donations
and contributions, was presented to Gilda’s Club NYC
by executives from EMCOR/Penguin and Alexandria Real
Estate Equities. Lily Safani, CEO, Gilda’s Club NYC, accepted
the check and participated in the event.

support of breast cancer awareness
and Gilda’s Club NYC. Ten Bands One
The campaign was orchestrated by Alex Brody, the Director
of Indie Sales and Marketing at RED Distribution. His father
died of liver cancer 15 years ago. “I’m pretty big on cancer
research and charities and going on runs and donating
when I can,” he said. Brody also explained that he used
to live right across from Gilda’s Club NYC in Brooklyn
and walked by it every day, always wanting to contribute
somehow. “Ten Bands, One Cause” is that contribution.*
