He suffered, was crucified, died, and rose from the dead so that we would be saved. We are all so very blessed for His love and the many gifts He has given us. On Saturday, March 8, Garces Memorial High School will be hosting our annual Formal Night Gala, which after two years being held at an off-campus site, this year will be brought back onto the Garces Memorial High School campus. It will be followed by our Casual Night Gala, which will also be held on the Garces Memorial campus on Saturday, March 15. Formal Night co-chairs Raji Sanghera ’87 and Maria (Bernal) Toretta ’88, Casual Night co-chairs Lisa Ebersole LeFleur ’69 and Angela Tidwell, Treasure Chest chair Irene Etchison and all of their staffs and helpers are working tirelessly to make these two evenings very special events to remember. These two events, which consist of dinner and oral and silent auctions, are excellent opportunities for our parents, guardians, and friends to enjoy a wonderful meal, socialize in a warm and fun-filled environment, bid on beautiful items, and support our school in the process. All proceeds go directly to Garces Memorial continued on Page 3 From the Principal's Desk Kathleen Bears, Principal kbears@garces.org The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. – Martin Luther King Jr. Did you know that there are 132,656 private and public schools in the United States, according to U. S. Department of Education statistics? And of those, 6,685 are Catholic elementary or secondary schools. Total Catholic school student enrollment for the current academic year is 2,001,740, of which 317,470 or 15.9% are non-Catholic. So what sets these Catholic schools apart from the pack? Three things, say educators, parents and community leaders: faith, academics and service. •Children are taught faith—not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. •Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. •Service, the giving of one’s time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship. Also according to Department of Education surveys, 84.9 % of 12th graders who attend Catholic schools go on to attend a four-year college as compared to 61.3 % for other religious schools and 57.2% for other private schools. I wanted to share these facts as during the last week in January your students and our faculty and staff celebrated Catholic Schools Week here at Garces. The 2014 theme - Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service – aims to help recognize and celebrate our many accomplishments. Catholic schools are not only noted for their academic excellence and high moral standards, Catholic schools make education happen. Catholic schools are communities –small continued on Page 3 First Semester Honor Roll 2013-2014 3.5 GPA & Above CLASS OF 2014 Madison Alexander Shea Andrew Claire Anspach Jamie Kristen Barnhill Caitlyn Bradford Brandon Burdick Nicholas Burger Dominique Campos Alexandra Campos Ali Champness Cameron De Boer Vincent Del Papa Inderbir Dhanoa Satinder Dhindsa Harjot Dosanjh Antoinette Dulcich Anthony Echeverria Julie Elizagoyen John Evans Joshua Faria Andrew Farr Dominic Frasch Justin Gapper Kathryn Giggy Jagjeet Gill Sarah Grimes Paige Gruszka Kate Hamilton Tristan Hammans Jonathan Hernandez Samantha Highfield Collin Jamieson Bo Kyung Kim Sara Klang Elizabeth Kloock Patrick Kolodji Haley Kotz-Witt Lea Theresa Lavilla Emily Leyva Andrea Loreto Stephanie Lugo Jack Lundy Ivana Martinez Hayden McMurtrey Rachael Metzger Rikkie Meyeres Murielle Morales Jaclyn Morris Jake Munster Francisco Ojeda Jun Hwan Park Bettina Pasamba Jacob Pavletich Julianna Perez Ryan Recicar Joseph Renzi Joseph Roach Alexandria Rodriguez Mariana Roldan Joseph Salvucci www.garces.org Carol Sandoval Da Yea Shim Brooke Shumate Becky Siharath Sean Smith Lauren Smith Katherine Soper Jacob Stuart Caroline Tague Mackenzie Tidwell Madison Todd Taylor Uribe Camille Wood Ryan Young CLASS OF 2015 Mark Anthony Albandia Trey Alderete Joseph Antongiovanni Nicoleta Apperti Amanda Armstrong Logan Aspeitia Claire Barmann Domenique Barnes Samuel Birchfield Ryan Bonas Bridget Boylan Tatum Bradford Gurleen Brar Adrianna Buenviaje Blair Burkhart Francesca Darquea Erica Delgado Amandeep Dhaliwal Nathan Esch Allen Eschete Lilyana Espinoza Maria Etcheverry Sydney Garza Zachary Gomez Maveric Guzman Kyle Haffermann Juan Hernandez Andrew Hoang Rachel Hoover Abby Hulsey Elizabeth Jamison Kyle Klingenberger Ty Layer Mateo Lopez Tehnad Mangat Althea Martinez Abaigeal McCormick Kylie Minor Katherine Morton Yolanda Navarro Victoria Nguyen Alexander Ortiz Matt Pandol Samuel Perez Made Prasadha Sterling Riley Madalyn Roach Amanda Rodriguez Kendall Rudie Jack Scott Renee Senining John Soper Matthew Staugaard Shelby Stewart Jenna Storey Sonia Talamantes Samuel Tobias Stephanie Torres Emily Tovar Kelsey Turner Kathryn VanderPoel Luke Vazquez Jae woong Yoon CLASS OF 2016 Paul Abdou Marc Abdou Shirleen Achieng Garrett Andrew Delaney Beck Alyssa Bernardino Nicolau Borba Navdeep Brar Crispin Chipres Ciera Cinquemani Yasmine Culbertson Alyssa Nicole Dailo Madison Demos Navneeth Dosanjh Francesca Dulcich Danielle Echeverria Jenette Echeverria Jared Elliott Julianne Finch Sophie Freeman Katerina Gardella Raquel Gomez Nicholas Gonzales Allison Gonzalez Benjamin Hakimi Juliann Hallum Emma Hawkins Joshua Hedden Ashley Hernandez Nicole Jamieson Amber Khieralla Macy Kirschenmann Kennan Klingenberger Kathryn Koenig Jose Miguel Limcaoco Gabrielle Lipco Olivia Matalka Robert McDermott Sarah Mortel Alberto Munoz Daniel Navarro Annamarie Oddo Alexandra Odello Addison Oesch Thomas Packebush Scott Packebush Johann Phillip Palo Jordyn Pavletich Maci Petrini Marissa Ramirez Drew Rogers Ariana Sales Dante Scatena Kayla Scott Jordan Slaton Calista Tanuwijaya Elsy Tovar Brian Traut Nina Lyka Tumulak Thom Christian Turingan Naizemarie Ubay Giann Visque Celeste West Emily Young Zoe Zanoff CLASS OF 2017 John Abrams Nevada Allison Justin Barnes Scott Boylan Conor Bruce Patrick Burke Bianca Burkhart Lauren Burson Abigail Campbell Thomas Demler Anastasia Drulias Adrienne Ducato Mikaella Estoque Samuel Etchison Spencer Etchison Antone Fanucchi Jacqueline Faria Spencer Garza Michael Georgino Joshua Gonzales Katherine Goode Emma Goulart Blake Grider Kelsey Haley Claire Hamilton Sean Hatten Lillyan Hoang Eric Inman Swan Kolodji Danielle Lacayo Matthew Lee Jared Lubatti Gabriella Lugo Bryson McCathron Alexandra McCullum Corbin McMurtrey Emily McMurtrey Jocelyn Medina Hannah Merjil Siara Meyers Jack Minor Jacob Moody Michelle Moore Robert Moseley Olivia Muller Eduardo Munoz Megan Nagel Sabrina Ortiz Nathan Ortiz Gunkyu Park Jamie Penner Megan Puget Taylor Ramirez Madeleine Reyes Taylor Riggan Lauren Riggan Esperanza Rivera Deanna Rodriguez Kenneth Russo Giovanna Sacco JohnPaul Sakowski Paulina Salas Kyra Sales Isabella Santerre Randolph Senining Dylan Simonsen John Starkey Alexandria Strahan Samuel Subia Joseph Tobias Thomas Toretta Zachary Turley Jakob Uribe Emily Urner Hannah VanderPoel Kristen Vibal Brandon Villalobos Emily Weber Blaire Williams Jensen Williams Olivia Wooner Vincent Zaninovich From the Principal continued from Page 1 families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be measured. If you have the opportunity in your discussions with friends, neighbors and co-workers with soon-to-be high school age children, on behalf of our Admissions Director Ms. Anne Styles and myself, we would ask for your help by sharing your thoughts on the many advantages and benefits gained by those that choose to attend Garces Memorial High School. During Catholic Schools Week, I do know that your sons and daughters thoroughly enjoyed “Free Dress” Tuesday. I also hope that our parents and grandparents enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate Mass and socialize at a meal with the students. As you know, Garces was able to move forward with bringing its education plan into the age of technology of using electronic books and interactive apps by providing every student an iPad beginning this school year. Unlike other school districts, Garces has successfully incorporated iPads in the classroom and for use at home. The program has been well received, so much so that even our neighbors participate, with one family returning to the school an iPad they found in the street. It is great to have such nice neighbors. I want to close by again thanking our Parents’ Club and the many PSI parents for their help in completing this very successful year for Garces, and I look forward to seeing many of you at one of our Gala events or one of our other many spring, extra-curricular student activities here at Garces Memorial High School! Go Rams! God bless you, your sons and daughters and your entire family this day, and every day. Garces students have already been blessed this year with the opportunity to compete in several Valley Championship contests in our fall sports programs. I look forward to continue watching them and reporting back to you on their success as they compete in similar contests as members of our outstanding winter and spring extracurricular teams. I also had the pleasure to attend our young Mock Trial team’s matches in this years’ Kern County competition. From the President continued from Page 1 to ensure the continued growth and success of our school. I encourage you to attend one or both of the events. For information about times, ticket costs, and other information, please contact Ms. Tonya Abbott, at (661) 327-2578, ext. 118. I am very excited about the quality of the applicant pool for the Class of 2018. I want to thank the Admissions team for the conscientious and thorough attention given to this year’s admissions campaign. Through their efforts and with the enthusiastic support and cooperation of our local parish pastors: Msgr. Michael Braun (Our Lady of Perpetual Help), Fr. Joachim Cheon (San Clemente Mission) Fr. Dan Coyle (Sacred Heart), Fr. Larry Toschi (Our Lady of Guadalupe), Msgr. Stephen Frost (Christ the King), Msgr. Craig Harrison (St. Francis of Assisi), Msgr. Raul Sanchez (St. Philip the Apostle), Fr. Miguel Flores (St. Joseph’s), and Msgr. Perry Kavookjian (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton) along with their grammar school administration and staff and their C.C.D. and Youth Coordinators, we were able to reach out to every Catholic family in the community. A special thank you is extended to Mrs. Anne Styles, Ms. Myka Peck, and all those who gave of their time, effort, and expertise to assist in this effort. I would like to take this opportunity to personally that Geri and John Kauffman ’58, former Garces parents who have been actively involved in our Sunday Bingo program for the past 35 years, and who have served as the co-coordinators for the past 15 years. Their tireless efforts and dedication of countless hours and valuable expertise have served the school well. Their efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars that have gone directly into the continued growth and improvement of this school. They have formally stepped down at the conclusion of 2013, but continue to work when called upon. The Bingo program will continue, now under the direction and leadership of Joan and Gene Garibaldi, former Garces parents and long-time supporters of the school. Joan and Gene are the originators of the Garces Bingo program and have returned to continue to ensure the success of this proud and supportive program. If you enjoy playing Bingo and would like to find out more about our Sunday games, please call the school for information. Mr. and Mrs. Kauffman, thank you so very much and God bless you. Mr. and Mrs. Garibaldi, welcome back, thank you, and God bless you. Construction continues on our newest classroom addition, the Our Lady of Perpetual Help – Garces Memorial High School Music Building. The completion date is scheduled for mid-to-late February, 2014. This outstanding addition to our campus was made possible through a generous gift given to both schools by Frankie and E.G. Berchtold, longtime supporters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and School and Garces Memorial High School. We are all so very grateful for and have definitely been blessed by the generosity, love, and concern of the Berchtold’s. Thank you so very much and God bless you for your continued belief in and support of the mission and direction of Garces Memorial High School. 3 Academic News The second semester is off to a great start. It is hard to believe that Lent and Easter are right around the corner. As Spring fever sets in, please encourage your student to maintain a high level of dedication to their studies. Seniors As a reminder, seniors must complete their service hour obligation and pass all second semester courses with a D- or better (60%) in order to participate in any graduation ceremonies. Juniors The counselors are beginning to schedule meetings with juniors and their parents to discuss college plans. Junior families should also look at the school calendar and begin making plans to take the SAT and ACT. While simply taking the test multiple times will not generally increase scores, using past results to target areas for practice in between test dates and/or taking a test prep course can lead to increased student scores for these very important standardized tests. Spring All School Testing Historically, half of Garces students take the ACT by the time they are seniors (and eighty percent take the SAT). Garces is committed to supporting students in preparation for this test. Garces is the only school in Kern County that offers a practice ACT opportunity for students within the school year. On Thursday March 27 all Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior students will sit for practice ACT tests. Seniors are excused from school attendance on that day. First Semester Grades If your student earned a grade of D+, D, D-, or F in any class on the first semester report card, please call your student’s counselor to discuss enrollment in summer school at Garces Memorial to remediate the grade. All grades of “F” must be remediated in summer school. While a grade in the D range is considered passing for Garces graduation and does not require remediation, most colleges and universities will not accept any grade of D+, D, or D-; for most colleges, a core course grade of D is equivalent to an F. www.garces.org Second Semester Grades Progress Reports Student grades are available to parents and students at any time on their NetClassroom account. However, an online (pdf) report card will be posted to NetClassroom on four occasions each semester, typically two school days after the grading period ends. In the second semester, the grading period ends on February 13 for the first progress report, March 14 for the mid-term (quarter) grades, April 11 for the second progress report, and the second semester ends on May 30. The mid-term grades from March will be used when determining Extracurricular Eligibility for the fourth quarter. Academic Probation/Ineligibility Students who either earned a G.P.A below 2.0 for both the October and January report cards or students who earned more than one grade of “F” for the January report card are now considered to be under Extracurricular Ineligibility for the entire third quarter and automatically enrolled in the Mandatory Academic JUG program (see below under Academic JUG). For all students in this situation, letters were mailed to parents in mid-January. If there is any question as to the status of your child in terms of their ability to participate in extracurricular activities please refer to the Parent Student Handbook (Academics) or contact my office at your convenience. The sanctions for students in this situation are intended to motivate these students and to make sure they have the time to refocus their attention on their classroom responsibilities. Please note, by C.I.F. policy, even students under Extracurricular Ineligibility who respond positively to these sanctions and improve their grades must still wait the duration of the third before being able to participate as a player in any C.I.F game. Under strict conditions, established in writing with the office of the Assistant Principal for Academic Affair, Garces has the latitude to allow students to earn back their eligibility to team practice (again, not games), dances, and all other extracurricular events. Please contact my office for further details. Academic JUG To assist students who are ineligible for Extracurricular Activities a Mandatory Collaboration program has been created. Students in this program will meet from 3:15 to 4:15 PM every Green Day in Room 73 on the Garces Campus for a one hour study hall monitored by the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs. Parents of students in this program were contacted by letter in midJanuary. If you have any questions about the By Mike Susank Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs msusank@garces.org program or if you are interested in getting your child included in this program, please contact me at extension 110 or see your child’s counselor. On-Line Registration for Next Year’s Classes Mark your calendars for the night of February 12th when the Assistant Principal and counselors will be making a presentation and answering questions about the best courses for families to choose for their child in the upcoming 2014-2015 Academic Year at Garces. The presentation will begin at 5:30 PM in room 72 followed by a Q&A session. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Beginning February 17th counselors will be escorting students to the library (by English class) for online course registration. However, no student will be placed into classes without a parental signature of approval. Course request forms will be provided to students (and are also available from the counseling office). Forms are to be signed by a parent and returned to their counselor before student course requests will be accepted. Please also note, approval from both your student’s counselor and from the Assistant Principal is also required if your student plans to take a high school (10 unit) course in summer school. Honors/Advanced Placement Classes for next year Students who wish to be considered for any honors or AP course for the next school year can anticipate at least three steps in that process. As above, they must register online for the class with their counselor, they must submit a Course Request Form (signed by a parent) to their counselor, AND they also must submit an honors/AP application to the Department Chair for each course. This includes students currently in honors courses who wish to continue in the honors track for that subject area. Contracts are available from the Department Chairperson or the counseling office. Contracts are due by Friday, March 7th. Admission to these courses is merit based. The number of courses offered will be largely determined by the number of qualified students who apply at that time so it is critical that any student with interest submit an application for consideration. If too few students apply for a course it may impact whether or not a course is offered. Contact the Assistant Principal’s office or your student’s counselor for any further questions. We couldn't do it without YOU! Parent Club Corner By Caryl Schweitzer, President Happy winter (but more like spring)! I hope everybody had a peaceful and healthful holiday. Myka Peck, Director of Activities mpeck@garces.org The ASB class has worked hard on planning three major events over the next couple months! We just finished a wonderful Catholic Schools Week. It was a week where students had many opportunities to "give back" for this great education we are blessed with. Students recognized the teachers, community, our parents and grandparents. This week reminded the student body how lucky they are to have so many people support us in reaching our goals. The second event coming up is Garces Winter Formal on February 8, 2014. The theme is James Bond: Skyfall and will be held at the Epic Hanger. We will recreate a sophisticated James bond theme with beautiful jets, cars, and a classy evening for all. Come dressed to impress. Make sure your students buy their bids on time! Towards the end of February, the ASB class is hosting the first ever Rampede, a 5k color run. This event will be on the 23rd at the Sam Tobias Field. The money raised by the participators for the Veterans Flight Association of Bakersfield will cover the cost of registration, donation and a t-shirt for the run. These are great for the spring sports that are starting soon. Also, we are selling printed Parent Directories for $10. The ordering deadline was January 15, but we have some extras to sell. If you have any questions, please call me at 979-1456. Sincerely, Caryl Schweitzer President, Garces Parent Club 5 Counseling Report PSAT SCORE RESULTS Welcome back to an already, busy year! We are in the process of helping our seniors complete their college application process and scheduling meetings for College Information and Guidance Appointments with all our junior students and their parents. Also, we have received the score results from the PSAT which all sophomore and junior students took in October of 2013. Please be on the lookout for these results, students received these results on January 23rd and 24th. To help you interpret your student's scores, we would like you to be attentive to our new informational video, located on our Counseling website entitled, Interpreting Your PSAT Score Results. Mrs. Limi does a great job of giving a clear and concise explanation on the importance of your child's scores in regard to SAT preparation and college admissions. Mrs. Limi also addresses the importance of registering for both the SAT and ACT. Additionally, you may visit the website at http:// professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/ understanding-psat-nmsqt-results-presentation. ppt where you can view a power point titled; Understanding Your PSAT/MNSQT Results COURSE REGISTRATION FOR NEXT YEAR Garces Memorial students register for their classes via Net Classroom. Students will complete this process, with the guidance of our counselors, on-line, in the library. They will fill out a course request worksheet, have it signed by a parent or guardian, and return this worksheet to their counselor. Information regarding registration dates, deadlines for completion of worksheets, honors contracts and final on-line course requests will be made available to parents and students at a later date. SEMESTER GRADES If your student received a “D” or “F” in any course, for the semester, they will need to remediate (make-up) that course during Summer School 2014. Counselors will be sending letters home informing parents and students of the courses requiring remediation. They have also made recommendations for those core courses which will need to be remediated for students wanting to attend a four year college, immediately upon graduation from Garces. Please note, as stated in the handbook, "Students must remediate, in summer school, all grades of "F" and/or "I" earned in a current school year prior to the beginning of the following school year unless otherwise authorized by the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs." Please contact your student’s counselor if you have questions regarding remediation of course work. www.garces.org F R E E A P P L I C AT I O N f o r F E D E R A L STUDENT AID (FAFSA) This is a very important time for those students seeking college financial aid for the 2014 – 2015 academic year. The FAFSA forms are available on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. All colleges require a FAFSA form for students to be eligible for financial aid, including school and federal grants, scholarships, subsidized loans and work-study. Priority filing dates are from January 1, 2014 to March 2, 2014. If a student wishes priority consideration for financial aid, the FAFSA form must be in by March 2nd. Some schools will require financial aid forms to be filed before the March 2 deadline (as early as mid January!!). It is important to check with each college’s financial aid office for deadlines. Students submitting applications after March 2nd cannot be guaranteed financial aid. To expedite the processing of your application, file on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. CSS PROFILE Some colleges have separate financial aid applications to complete and return to the school directly. More often, a general form, the CSS PROFILE, published by the College Scholarship Service at www.collegeboard.com is required. Students should check with each college’s financial aid office to determine if they require the PROFILE or other documentation. CAL GRANT/GRADE POINT AVERAGE VERIFICATION FORM (Please note electronic submission) Cal Grants are awards funded by the state with a small portion funded by the Federal Government. The awards do not have to be paid back. To be considered for a Cal Grant Award, in addition to submitting the FAFSA, seniors must also make sure they submit a certified Grade Point Average (GPA) to the California Student Aid Commission by March 2, 2014. This year, if you returned the form giving Garces permission to access your student's social security number for the purpose of submitting the GPA online, Garces will submit your GPA electronically to the commission's system. If your student did not return this form, they will need to print a GPA Verification Form (access online @ www.csac.ca.gov ) and return to their counselor so that the high school GPA can be verified. Students will then be responsible for mailing this form prior to the March 2nd deadline. Remember, the GPA is calculated on a 4.0 (non-weighted) scale using all academic course work for the sophomore and junior years only. Extra weighting will not be given for honors and advanced placement classes. Using this system, GPA’s are often lower than what is listed on a senior transcript. Again, the filing deadline for a Cal Grant is March 2, 2014, and no late applications are considered. CASH FOR COLLEGE WORKSHOP California Cash for College is a partnership program of the California Student Aid Commission and regional partners across California. Their mission is to provide free, in-person help to By Debra Sakowski Director of Counseling dsakowski@garces.org college and career bound students and families completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form. There are several Cash for College Workshops offered at various high school throughout Kern County. Please visit the website @ www.csac.ca.gov or see your counselor for a listing of these workshops. MONEY FOR COLLEGE!!! A variety of scholarship opportunities are available on the Family Connection website including: essay contests; academic achievements; culture & ethnicity; and college major interests. Each scholarship has an application and a deadline. In addition to our list, students can go to FASTWEB. com or scholarships.com for more opportunities. The money is available but the student must apply. AP EXAMS Test Dates: May 5th-16th, 2014 Each exam costs $89.00. Students must register (pay their fee) by Friday, March 14, 2014. Late registration will not be accepted! Payment is made in the Business Office located in the Administration building. Please make your check payable to Garces Memorial High School. The counselors will visit classes to explain to the students the AP testing procedure. They will also be given a handout from the College Board with important dates and procedures. If you have questions, please contact your student’s counselor or go to www.collegeboard.com, the AP testing link. TUTORING It is recommended that those students looking for a tutor to see the instructor of the subject first for extra help. It is often easier for the classroom instructor to help the student as the instructor knows the student’s work habits, test performance and areas of difficulty. All of our instructors are available during collaboration, and either before or after school for help. Garces also offers free tutoring on Green Days in Room 72 for Math/ Science courses and in Room 7 for all others. This service is offered through the Garces chapter of the California Scholarship Federation and is a peer to peer tutoring service. If you do decide to hire an outside tutor, please be sure to inform the teacher and suggest that the tutor contact the instructor about assignments, test performance and areas of concern. JUNIOR COLLEGE ADVISING Mrs. Limi and Mrs. Sakowski are currently meeting with our junior students and parents for College Information and Guidance. The meeting will go over SAT and ACT testing information, UC/CSU and private college admission requirements, essays for admission and more. If you do not receive a scheduled appointment by the end of March, please contact your student's counselor. Students are advised to take at least one SAT and ACT by the end of his or her junior year. There are many opportunities to enrich the academic experience. Also current students who received a failing grade (grade of a “D” or “F”) should meet with their counselor to review course offerings in the summer program. Students who wish to make room in their fall schedule for Advanced Placement courses or other electives have the option of taking Art, Economics/Government, U.S. History, World History, Geometry, Physical Education or Health/Computers during summer school. Students will also have the opportunity to remediate Chemistry, Spanish I, II or III, Theology, English, Geometry, and Algebra I or II, if necessary. Students enrolled in the Music program during the academic year should consult with their counselors before enrolling in summer school. We offer two sessions of a variety of classes for students entering grades fifth through eighth. Each session lasts two weeks. Core classes in Math and English are available. Enrichment classes in ceramics, photography, music, guitar lessons, Spanish, French, Art, Forensics, Journalism, Cooking, CSI, and Science Fair Prep and a variety of athletic classes are also available. In the online Garces Parent-Student Handbook, “Handbook”, it clearly states…A student may not be permitted to attend or participate in any extra-curricular activity if the student is absent for any portion of the school day. It goes on to state…Participation in week-end or “all day” activities and sporting events requires that the student meet the same instructional requirements on the school day immediately prior to the event. And finally, it states…Absences sanctioned by the administration (certain school-related activities, unavoidable conflicts such as a funeral, emergency medical appointments, etc.) are exempt from this regulation. Parents are expected to contact the school in advance when the student will be absent given the above conditions. The administration reserves the right to review cases involving extraordinary circumstances. Please contact the Dean of Students if such circumstances and conflicts occur. Cafeteria and Lunch In the online Handbook, it states…Off Campus lunch deliveries are prohibited. Our cafeteria staff works extremely hard to provide nutritional and tasty lunch and break options at an affordable price. If your student has forgotten his/her lunch money, please direct him/her to contact Mrs. Bears or Mr. Susank for assistance. Thank you for your support in this matter. General Dress and Grooming Code Also in the online Handbook, the dress and grooming requirements for students are clearly stated. Please review these expectations with your student(s). Please assist the school in the enforcement of these rules. For girls, please pay special attention to skirt and short lengths and to tights/stockings styles and colors. For boys, please pay special attention to belt requirements, hair length and shaving responsibilities. For all students, please pay special attention to Sweaters, Sweatshirts, and Jackets style and color requirements. Thank you in advance for your assistance with these areas of concern. Fog Delay During the winter months, the Kern County area can experience heavy fog. Please listen to the radio/television for the following announcement: "All high schools in the greater Bakersfield Area are on a fog delay." You can also call 283-1800, category 4613 or log on to www.KGET.com. NOTE: Garces will follow a fog delay called for all high schools in the greater Bakersfield area. On a fog delay, Garces’ first bell rings at 9:55 a.m. www.garces.org John Fanucchi Dean of Students jfanucchi@garces.org Student Handbook Changes We are busy making preparations for the next academic year and we value your thoughts on the school’s discipline policies. Please contact us so that the Administrative Team may consider your input before we make our final decision on these policies for next year. The Administrative team will finalize the handbook by mid-April so please email us, leave us a message or drop by our office any time between now and then. Student Drivers As 16th birthdays come around we generally have a new batch of student drivers. Please remind your sons and daughters that all student drivers are expected to park their vehicle in the student lot and that parking passes (available for $25 in the business office) are required. Naturally, the rules of the road apply on school property and will be fairly enforced including statutes regarding cell phone use and underage passengers. As a reminder, at no time should a person be in a moving vehicle without wearing a seatbelt. Driving while talking on the phone is illegal and hazardous to all. And, no person under the age of 18 is to transport another person under the age of 24 for one full year after receiving a license. Student drivers will be stopped and questioned if this is observed. Please join us in encouraging your children to keep this as safe a campus as possible. Junior/Senior Prom Plans are already being made for this year’s Junior/Senior Prom. In the interest of continuing the tradition of making this a wholesome event, please make sure your sons or daughters are appropriately dressed for the occasion. The expectations are outlined in the online Handbook. If there is any question about the appropriateness of an outfit please contact our office before removing the tags. Senior/Summer Trips “The End is Near!” Summer is just around the corner and many vacation plans are already being made. This is a reminder that Garces Memorial High School does not sponsor, endorse or encourage any “senior” trips. These trips are organized independently and are not, in any way school affiliated. The school assumes no responsibility or liability for “senior” or summer trips. Chaplain's Corner By Father Jim LaCasse, S.J. jlacasse@garces.org Blessings to all in the new year. With the new year on the calendar and the start of the second semester several projects are being planned. Dates for the Spring Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament are being considered and the Lenten Reconciliation Service for all students. Looking forward to Lent and Holy Week, the Stations of the Cross will again be celebrated by individual Theology classes, as this allows more students to participate. A special prayer is being added to the daily Mass here at Garces, asking for the blessing of rain in the valley and snow on the mountains to end the drought. CAMPUS MINISTRY Lent Our Lenten activities will begin on Tuesday, March 4, with our Mardi Gras Lunch. The cafeteria will be closed and numerous clubs will be selling food from many of our local restaurants. This is a great way to celebrate “Fat Tuesday” and support our clubs on campus. Ash Wednesday Mass will follow on Wednesday, March 5, at 11:30 in MLH. All parents are welcomed to join us. Dime-A-Day Lenten Collection Campus Ministry will once again be sponsoring our Dime-A-Day collection through the Lenten season. Cans will be available in the Theology classes for students to donate their loose change. Each year Campus Ministry selects an organization to sponsor for our collection. Last year we collected over $3000 for Fr. Greg Boyle and his Home Boy Ministry in Los Angeles. By Susan Rizo Director of Campus Ministry srizo@garces.org Community Service Hours Parents should have received an update of all service hours during the month of January. Please check over these service hour updates to make sure that all paperwork has been submitted. All students need to complete at least 15 hours of community service each year in any three areas: school, parish or community by the last day of final exams. Seniors should have submitted all service hours by January 6. For questions or inquiries on service hours opportunities contact Mrs. Rose Guice at 327-2578 x191.
