The ANNUAL FUND DRIVE - PARENTS
AS PARTNERS APPEAL continues, and I
continue to ask for your support. With the
state of our society being what it is today, a
curriculum that educates not only the mind
and the body, but also the heart and the soul
of our youth, has never been more critical. A
Christian education, founded on the teachings
and traditions of our Catholic faith, has never
been more needed. Unfortunately, with the
state of our economy being what it is today,
this type of education has never been more
expensive or costly. In order to continue to
offer this important educational alternative
at its highest, most valuable level, while
keeping the cost of tuition affordable for all
of you, we must find alternative methods
of financial support for our school and our
many spiritual, academic and extracurricular
programs. To continue to attract and retain
the most qualified and committed faculty
and staff to support and enhance these
programs, we must constantly find new
methods of revenue building. The Annual
Fund Drive - PARENTS AS PARTNERS
APPEAL is our most effective means of
raising the monies needed. This Drive,
while not the most glamorous, is the most
critical to the continued effectiveness and
success of our school. I know that you have
already made many personal sacrifices to
send your child(ren) to Garces Memorial.
I must ask for your support once more.
If 100% of our families give something
– give as generously as possible while
within their means – this drive will be
an overwhelming success. I would like
to personally thank those who have had
the opportunity to contribute financially

The function of education is to teach one
to think intensively and to think critically.
Intelligence plus character - that is the
goal of true education. – Martin Luther
King Jr.
Did you know that there are 132,656 private
and public schools in the United States,
according to U. S. Department of Education
statistics? And of those, 6,980 are Catholic
elementary or secondary schools.
So what sets these Catholic schools apart
from the pack? Three things, say educators,
parents and community leaders: faith,
academics and service.
•
Children are taught faith—not just
the basics of Christianity, but how to have a
relationship with God.
•
Academics, which in Catholic
schools are held to very high standards, help
each child reach his or her potential.
•
Service, the giving of one’s time
and effort to help others, is taught both as an
expression of faith and good citizenship.
Also according to Department of Education
surveys, 84.9 % of 12th graders who attend
Catholic schools go on to attend a fouryear college as compared to 61.3 % for
other religious schools and 57.2% for
other private schools.
I wanted to share these facts as during the
last week in January your students and
our faculty and staff celebrated Catholic
Schools Week here at Garces. The 2013
theme - Catholic Schools Raise the
Standards – aims to help recognize and
celebrate our many accomplishments.
Catholic schools are not only noted
for their academic excellence and high
moral standards, Catholic schools make
education happen, Catholic schools are
relevant, Catholic schools are challenging,
Catholic schools value relationships,
Catholic schools are Christ-centered and
Catholic schools are essential.
If you have the opportunity in your
discussions with friends, neighbors and
co-workers with soon-to-be high school
age children, on behalf of our Admissions
team of Myka Peck and Lou Ann Durrett

From the Principal
continued from Page 1
and myself, we would ask for your help
by sharing your thoughts on the many
advantages and benefits gained by those
that choose to attend Garces Memorial High
School.
During Catholic Schools Week, I do know that
your sons and daughters thoroughly enjoyed
“Free Dress” Tuesday. I also hope that our
parents and grandparents (98 grandparents!)
enjoyed the op
portunity to
celebrate Mass and the informal social
with your students. To begin the week,
Garces had its own “Dime Wars” to benefit
St. Vincent DePaul and all the wonderful
work they do in our community. Dimes
were collected all week and the winning
homeroom won their own pizza party. Your
students’ service and commitment to help
others was also exhibited during Drug and
Alcohol Awareness Week when they raised
over $2,000 for the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit at Memorial Hospital.
In case you have not already heard, our very
own Garces Rector, Monsignor Michael R.
Braun, was chosen by the National Catholic
Education Association as a Distinguished
Catholic School Pastor for 2012 - 2013. The
Distinguished Pastor Award honors pastors
who have given outstanding support to
Catholic elementary education. I also have
it on very good authority that his locker room
and on-field pep talks to the Garces football
team, just like those of Knute Rockne,
helped motivate them each game on the
way to their Valley championship this year.
Congratulations Monsignor Mike!
I am also very excited that with our Board
of Director’s concurrence, Garces was able
to announce that we will move toward
electronic books and interactive apps and
will provide every student an iPad beginning
with the 2013-14 school year. Garces will
incorporate iPads in the classroom and for
use at home. It is my pleasure to be able
to share with you that our own outstanding
baseball coach and teacher, Mr. Guy Dees,
has agreed to head this new program
and integration into the classroom which
will greatly benefit our students and lead
Garces to the next level in education and
achievement. Guy has already started
training for the faculty and staff and I for
one have had to come in for collaboration
and a lot of extra help.
Garces students have already been blessed
this year with the opportunity to compete
in several Valley Championship contests in
our fall sports programs. I look forward to
continue watching them and reporting back
to you on their success as they compete
in similar contests as members of our
outstanding winter and spring extracurricular
teams. I also had the pleasure to attend our
young Mock Trial team’s matches in this
years’ Kern County competition. I want to close by again thanking our
Parents’ Club and the many PSI parents for
their help in completing this very successful
year for Garces, and I look forward to seeing
many of you at one of our Gala events or one
of our other many spring, extra-curricular
student activities here at Garces Memorial
High School!
Go Rams!
God bless you, your sons and daughters and
your entire family this day, and every day.
From the President continued from Page 1
to this Drive. I would like to ask those of
you who have not yet contributed to join in
supporting this Drive. You can contribute
by printing out, filling out and returning the
form on Page12 of this Newsletter. If you
prefer, you can contribute on line by going
to www.garces.org, scroll on the top bar to
“Supporting Garces”, then scroll down to
“On-Line Giving.” If you have questions
or desire more information, please refer to
our website or call me at 327-2578, ext.
116. Remember: There is no greater
investment that one can make and no
greater gift that one can give than in the
education of their children.
On Saturday, March 9, we will be hosting
our annual Formal Night Gala, which this
year will be held at Seven Oaks Country
Club. It will be followed by our Casual
Night Gala, which will be held on the Garces
Memorial campus on Friday, March 15.
These two events, which consist of dinner
and oral and silent auctions, are excellent
opportunities for our parents, guardians, and
friends to enjoy a wonderful meal, socialize
in a warm and fun-filled environment, bid on
www.garces.org
beautiful items, and support our school in the
process. All proceeds go directly to Garces
Memorial to ensure the continued growth
and success of our school. I encourage you
to attend one or both of the events. For
information about times, ticket costs, and
other information, please contact Ms. Tonya
Abbott, at (661) 327-2578, ext. 118.
I am very excited about the quality of the
applicant pool for the Class of 2017. I
want to thank the Admissions team for the
conscientious and thorough attention given
to this year’s admissions campaign. Through
their efforts and with the enthusiastic support
and cooperation of our local parish pastors:
Msgr. Michael Braun (Our Lady of
Perpetual Help), Fr. Joachim Cheon (San
Clemente Mission) Fr. Dan Coyle (Sacred
Heart), Fr. Larry Toschi (Our Lady of
Guadalupe), Msgr. Stephen Frost (Christ
the King), Msgr. Craig Harrison (St.
Francis of Assisi), Msgr. Ronald Swett (St.
Philip the Apostle), Fr. Miguel Flores (St.
Joseph’s), and Msgr. Perry Kavookjian
(St. Elizabeth Ann Seton) along with their
grammar school administration and staff
and their C.C.D. and Youth Coordinators,
we were able to reach out to every Catholic
family in the community. A special thank
you is extended to Ms. Lou Ann Durrett,
Ms. Myka Peck, and all those who gave of
their time, effort, and expertise to assist in
this effort.
As we enter the Lenten season, may we
all come to more fully understand and
appreciate all that Our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ did and continues to do for us. He
suffered, was crucified, died, and rose from
the dead so that we would be saved. We are
all so very blessed for His love and the many
gifts He has given us.
Thank you so very much and God bless you
for your continued belief in and support
of the mission and direction of Garces
Memorial High School.
Academic News
By Mike Susank
Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs
msusank@garces.org
The second semester is off to a great start.
It is hard to believe that Lent and Easter are
right around the corner. As Spring fever
sets in, please encourage your student to
continue their hard work.
final semester grades in late May. The midterm grades from March will be used when
determining Extracurricular Eligibility for the
fourth quarter.
in order to participate in any graduation
ceremonies. There is a mandatory Graduation
meeting for seniors and parents on April 4 at
7:00 PM in the gym.
First Semester Grades
Mandatory Collaboration
Students who repeatedly earn grades which
place them under Extracurricular Ineligibility
are at risk of falling academically behind to
the point they cannot graduate from Garces
Memorial with their class. These students
may not be invited back to Garces in the next
Academic Year. To assist these students
before they fall that far behind a Mandatory
Collaboration program has been created that
is coordinated by the student’s counselor.
Students in this program will meet with their
counselor weekly and be given a form to
be completed and signed by both student
and parent that outlines the collaboration
schedule for the coming week. The goal of
this program is to provide the support these
students need to prevent them from reaching
the point where they are not allowed to return
to Garces for the coming Academic Year. If
you have any questions about the program
please contact me at extension 110 or your
child’s counselor.
Juniors
The counselors are beginning to schedule
meetings with juniors and their parents to
discuss college plans. Junior families should
also look at the school calendar and begin
making plans to take the SAT and ACT.
Simply repeating the test will not generally
increase scores but repeating a test and
studying in between and/or taking a test prep
course can significantly increase student
scores for these very important standardized
tests.
If your student earned a grade of D+, D,
D-, or F in any class on the first semester
report card, please call your student’s
counselor to discuss enrollment in summer
school at Garces Memorial to remediate
the grade. All grades of “F” must be
remediated in summer school. While a
grade in the D range is considered passing
for Garces graduation and does not require
remediation, most colleges and universities
will not accept any grade of D+, D, or D-; for
most colleges, a course grade of D is the
equivalent of not even taking the course.
(Mrs. Poochigian (ext. 112) for freshmen,
Mrs. Limi (ext. 158) for soph/jr/sr A - K,
and Mrs. Sakowski (ext. 174) for soph/jr/
sr L-Z)
Academic Probation/Ineligibility
Students who earned a G.P.A below 2.0
at both the October and January grading
periods are now considered to be under
Extracurricular Ineligibility for the entire third
quarter. For all students in this situation,
letters were mailed to parents in late
January. If there is any question as to the
status of your child in terms of their ability to
participate in extracurricular activities please
contact my office at your convenience.
Students under Extracurricular Ineligibility
are not allowed to be present, as a
participant or as a spectator, at any Garces
sponsored, extracurricular activity. This
includes but is not limited to: dances,
practice, sporting events, performances,
recitals, competitions, auditions, or other
school events.
These sanctions are intended to motivate
students to refocus their attention on their
classroom responsibilities. Students under
Extracurricular Ineligibility who respond
positively to these sanctions and improve
their grades must still wait the duration of
the period of ineligibility before being able
to participate in any C.I.F game or sporting
event. Students who wish to maintain
contact with their extracurricular groups
while Ineligible can ONLY do so under
very strict conditions established in writing
with office of the Assistant Principal for
Academic Affairs.
Second Semester Grades/Progress Reports
Student grades are available to parents and
students at any time on their NetClassroom
account. However, an online (pdf) report
card will be posted to NetClassroom
on four occasions each semester; the
first progress report on February 13, the
mid-term (quarter) grade on March 20, a
second progress report on April 24, and
Free Sylvan Tutoring Program for Mathematics
Students who struggle in their introductory
mathematics courses (Pre-Algebra, Algebra
I P, and Geometry P) will be supported in
the second semester through an on-campus
tutoring program coordinated by Sylvan
Learning Centers. The tutoring program is
limited to our most struggling students but if
space is available, it may be expanded to other
interested families. This program will provide
30 hours (two hours per week for fifteen weeks)
of targeted assistance every Tuesday and
Thursday in the second semester beginning
February 5th. The program will begin 15
minutes after dismissal on Green Days and
15 minutes after Collaboration ends on White
Days. The program will run the entire length
of the second semester and families that agree
to the program are expected to have their
student attend all sessions. Those students
who have been identified by their counselor
for invitation to this program will receive a
letter in the last week of January outlining the
program. Participation in this program is highly
recommended for these students. If you are
interested in your student being allowed in
this program but your child is not identified as
among the most struggling students, please
contact the counselor and your child will be
added if space becomes available. Garces
is providing this program with no cost to the
families and funding for the program is done
entirely through a Federal Title I grant. We
hope this additional service will better support
those students who struggle in their first years
of math at Garces.
Seniors
As a reminder, seniors must pass all second
semester courses with a D- or better (60%)
On-Line Registration for
Next Year’s Classes
Garces Memorial students register for classes
on-line through NetClassroom. Counselors
will take students in small groups to the
library and walk them through this process.
Counselors will escort students by English
class beginning February 4th. However, no
student will be placed into classes without
parental approval. Forms will be given to
students during the registration process and
are to be signed by a parent and returned
to their counselor before their course
requests will be reviewed. Freshman and
Sophomore parents will receive additional
information about course selection at the
Mandatory College Information Night hosted
by the counselors on February 5th. The
meeting will begin at 5:30 PM in room 72
but counselors are also available individually
for help for all students. Please contact
your student’s counselor if you have any
questions or concerns. Approval from your
student’s counselor and from the Assistant
Principal is also required if your student
plans to take a high school (10 unit) course
in summer school.
Honors/Advanced
Placement Classes for next year
Students who wish to be considered for any
honors or AP course for the next school
year can anticipate at least three steps in
that process. They must register online for
the class with their counselor, they must
submit a Course Registration Form (signed
by a parent) to their counselor, AND must
submit an honors/AP application to the
Department Chair for each course. This
includes students currently in honors courses
who wish to continue in the honors track for
that subject area. Contracts are available
from the Department Chairperson or the
counseling office. Contracts are due by
Friday, February 15th. Admission to these
courses is merit based and courses fill up
fast. Contact the Assistant Principal’s office
or your student’s counselor for any further
questions.

We couldn't
do it without
YOU!
Parent Club Corner
By Caryl Schweitzer, President
Happy Winter!
First of all, I would like to report that Garces
Parent Club was invited to participate in
Drug and Alcohol awareness week. On
January 22, Garces parent Christina Rudie
spoke to the student body regarding the
devastating effects of drugs and alcohol
on unborn babies and how horrible it is to
watch them go through withdrawals when
they are born, most often prematurely. Mrs.
Rudie is a registered nurse in the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Bakersfield
Memorial Hospital. She got the attention
of the students when she showed them the
tiny six-inch long diapers used on premature
babies. On January 24, the GPC served
hot cocoa and cookies to the students and
parents who attended the evening mass in
the gym. To top off this informative week,
Garces students donated $5 to be able to
wear jeans and red shirts on January 25.
These donations resulted in a $2,000 gift to
the NICU at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.
These funds will be used for important
supplies for the unit.
Be sure to watch for GPC sales of items
with the Garces logo. Items are sold as
fundraisers for the GPC, which directly
benefit the students academically and
spiritually. We are currently selling sports
towels for $10. These are great for the spring
sports that are starting soon.
Many activities are on the calendar for the
next several months. Parent participation is
so important for the success of our school
and is a priceless way of holding onto the
bond with our children. Following are dates
of the upcoming events through April for
which we can use lots of assistance.
If you are not receiving email invitations
from me for the GPC meetings, please
email me at:
caryl.schweitzer@dignityhealth.org
I will add you to my list. I look forward to
seeing you at the next meeting on February
20.

ASB Update
By Myka Peck, Director of Activities
mpeck@garces.org
In the past three months our ASB has been focusing a great deal on our winter
formal. The theme of our formal was The Great Gatsby. On January 26th, the
Garces High school parking lot was transformed into a night of magic. The
students have worked a great deal of making this formal unique and different
from the others. The clear tent was made into a beautiful classy night for all to
enjoy. The clear tent was lit with beautiful chandeliers and string lighting. The
center pieces and glass top tables allowed the night to look like the 1920s. The
entrance of the tent had a search light with a red carpet walk up. Most importantly,
there was an actual Gatsby car parked out front. The night was one to remember
for all that attended.
Formal King and Queen Braden Baustita and Frances Klingenberger
Junior Prince and Princess Seth Garza and Ivana Martinez
Sophomore Prince and Princess Jack Scott and Erica Delgado
Freshmen Prince and Princess Andrew Haupt and Zoe Zanoff
We have also continued to enhance our Catholic Schools week at Garces. We
will be recognizing our administration, faculty, teachers, parents, grandparents,
and community members for all of their continued support in catholic Education.
Lastly we will create a special day for our students. The information has been
emailed to all parents.
Also, our winter sports rally will be February 15th. We will be showcasing our
cheerleaders, Garces players, Mock Trial, Academic Decathlon and winter sports
athletes. All are welcome to attend but I have to let you know that sitting is not
allowed. We must show our Ram Pride being loud and proud!!!
We would like to thank all of our parents' support that we have received
throughout this year. We greatly appreciated all the water and snacks donated
to us for Sadie, the night turned out great and good enjoyment for all. We
would also like to thank everyone that contributed to the Winter Formal. The
night could not have been as successful without your help. Your donations
are greatly appreciated. We would like to thank you ahead of time for all your
support in the future.

Counseling Report
Welcome back to an already, busy year! We are
in the process of helping our seniors complete
their college application process and scheduling
meetings for College Information and Guidance
Appointments with all our junior students and
their parents. As we move quickly through our
second semester, we'd like you to be attentive
to our new informational video, located on
our website entitled, Interpreting Your PSAT
Score Results. Mrs. Limi does a great job of
giving a clear and concise explanation on the
importance of your child's scores in regard to
SAT preparation and college admissions. She
also addresses the importance of registering for
both the SAT and ACT.
COURSE REGISTRATION FOR NEXT YEAR
Garces Memorial students register for their
classes via Net Classroom. Students will
complete this process, with the guidance of our
counselors, on-line, in the library, February 4th,
through February 11th. The students will fill out
a course request worksheet, have it signed by
a parent or guardian, and return this worksheet
to their counselor. These worksheets and
final on-line course requests must be returned
by February 15th. If you have not seen and
signed off on your student’s requests for next
year by the 15th, please call your counselor
immediately.
MANDATORY COLLEGE INFORMATION
NIGHT FOR FROSH/SOPH PARENTS
Mr. Susank and the school counselors will be
presenting a Mandatory College Information
Night for Frosh/Soph Parents on February
4th @ 5:30 pm. in Room 72 to explain to
parents how their students select courses that
will help them attain their post high school
goals. Information will also be given about
the Honors and Advanced Placement course
request process.
HONORS CONTRACTS
Students who wish to enroll in an Honors and/or
Advanced Placement course for the 2013-2014
school year must complete an Honors Contract.
Students may obtain a contract from Ms.
Chavez in the Counseling Center beginning on
February 3rd. The forms will also be available
during registration sessions in the library.
Students must return the completed contract
to the head of each department by February
15th. Even if you are currently enrolled in an
Honors class for this year, you must reapply for
the next school year.
SEMESTER GRADES
If your student received a “D” or “F” in
any course, for the semester, they will need
to remediate (make-up) that course during
Summer School 2013. Counselors will be
sending letters home informing parents and
students of the courses requiring remediation.
They have also made recommendations for
those core courses which will need to be
remediated for students wanting to attend a fouryear college immediately upon graduation from
Garces. Please note, as stated in the handbook,
"Students must remediate, in summer school,
all grades of "F" and/or "I" earned in a current
school year prior to the beginning of the following
school year unless otherwise authorized by the
Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs." Please
contact your student’s counselor if you have
questions regarding remediation of course work.
FREE APPLICATION for
FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)
This is a very important time for those students
seeking college financial aid for the 2013 – 2014
academic year. The FAFSA forms are available
on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. All colleges require
a FAFSA form for students to be eligible for
financial aid, including school and federal grants,
scholarships, subsidized loans and work-study.
Priority filing dates are from January 1, 2013,
to March 2, 2013. If a student wishes priority
consideration for financial aid, the FAFSA form
must be in by March 2nd. Some schools will require
financial aid forms to be filed before the March 2
deadline (as early as mid January!!). It is important
to check with each college’s financial aid office for
deadlines. Students submitting applications after
March 2nd cannot be guaranteed financial aid.
To expedite the processing of your application, file
on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
CSS PROFILE
Some colleges have separate financial aid
applications to complete and return to the school
directly. More often, a general form, the CSS
PROFILE, published by the College Scholarship
Service at www.collegeboard.com is required.
Students should check with each college’s financial
aid office to determine if they require the PROFILE
or other documentation.
CAL GRANT/GRADE POINT
AVERAGE VERIFICATION FORM
(Please note electronic submission)
Cal Grants are awards funded by the state with a
small portion funded by the Federal Government.
The awards do not have to be paid back. To be
considered for a Cal Grant Award, in addition to
submitting the FAFSA, seniors must also make
sure they submit a certified Grade Point Average
(GPA) to the California Student Aid Commission
by March 2, 2013. This year, if you returned the
form giving Garces permission to access your
student's social security number for the purpose of
submitting the GPA online, Garces will submit your
GPA electronically to the commission's system. If
your student did not return this form, they will need
to print a GPA Verification Form (access online @
www.csac.ca.gov ) and return it to their counselor
so that the high school GPA can be verified.
Students will then be responsible for mailing this
form prior to the March 2nd deadline. Remember,
the GPA is calculated on a 4.0 (non-weighted) scale
using all academic course work for the sophomore
and junior years only. Extra weighting will not be
given for honors and advanced placement classes.
Using this system, GPA’s are often lower than what
is listed on a senior transcript. Again, the filing
deadline for a Cal Grant is March 2, 2013, and
no late applications are considered.
CASH FOR COLLEGE WORKSHOP
California Cash for College is a partnership
program of the California Student Aid Commission
and regional partners across California. Their

mission is to provide free, in-person help to
college and career bound students and families
completing the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Cal Grant GPA
Verification Form. There are several Cash for
College Workshops offered at various high
schools throughout Kern County. Please visit
the website @ www.csac.ca.gov or see your
counselor for a listing of these workshops.
MONEY FOR COLLEGE!!!
A variety of scholarship opportunities are available
on the Family Connection website including:
essay contests; academic achievements; culture
& ethnicity; and college major interests. Each
scholarship has an application and a deadline. In
addition to our list, students can go to FASTWEB.
com or scholarships.com for more opportunities.
The money is available but the student must
apply.
AP EXAMS
Test Dates: May 6th-16th, 2013
Each exam costs $89.00. Students must register
(pay their fee) by Friday, March 15, 2013.
Late registration will not be accepted! Payment
is made in the Business Office located in the
Administration building. Please make your
check payable to Garces Memorial High School.
The counselors will visit classes to explain to
the students the AP testing procedure. They
will also be given a handout from the College
Board with important dates and procedures. If
you have questions, please contact your student’s
counselor or go to www.collegeboard.com, the
AP testing link.
TUTORING
It is recommended that those students looking
for a tutor to see the instructor of the subject first
for extra help. It is often easier for the classroom
instructor to help the student as the instructor
knows the student’s work habits, test performance
and areas of difficulty. All of our instructors are
available during collaboration, and either before
or after school for help. Garces also offers free
tutoring on Green Days in Room 72 for Math/
Science courses and in Room 7 for all others.
This service is offered through the Garces chapter
of the California Scholarship Federation and is
a peer to peer tutoring service. If you do decide
to hire an outside tutor, please be sure to inform
the teacher and suggest that the tutor contact the
instructor about assignments, test performance
and areas of concern.
JUNIOR COLLEGE ADVISING
Mrs. Limi and Mrs. Sakowski are currently
meeting with our junior students and parents
for College Information and Guidance. The
meeting will go over SAT and ACT testing
information, UC/CSU and private college
admission requirements, essays for admission
and more. If you do not receive a scheduled
appointment by the end of March, please contact
your student's counselor. Students are advised to
take at least one SAT and ACT by the end of his
or her junior year.

By Steve Garcia, Director of Summer School
sgarcia@garces.org
Garces Memorial’s twenty-second Summer
School Session will be June 6 - July 12, 2013.
During these five weeks, students have the
opportunity to enroll in both full year and
semester courses for high school credit, as
well as courses which are either remedial or
enrichment based. All ten-unit courses are
scheduled to run from June 6 - July 12, from
7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Summer Session 2013 is open to students
entering fifth through twelfth grades. With the
completion of the tennis facilities and Salvucci

school packets are mailed with notification
of acceptance. If you have any questions,
concerns, or suggestions, please contact Mr.
Steve Garcia, Director of Summer School, at
327-2578, ext. 146, or Mrs. Joan Richardson,
Assistant, at 327-2578, ext. 109.
Returning students should also consult with
their counselor, Ms. Denise Limi ‘88, Mrs.
Debra Sakowski, or Mrs. Amy Poochigian for
guidance with course selections. There are
many opportunities to enrich the academic
experience. Also current students who
received a failing grade (grade of a “D” or “F”)
should meet with their counselor to review
course offerings in the summer program.
Students who wish to make room in their fall
schedule for Advanced Placement courses
or other electives have the option of taking
Art, Economics/Government, U.S. History,
World History, Geometry, Physical Education
or Health/Computers during summer school.
Students will also have the opportunity to
remediate Chemistry, Spanish I, II or III,
Theology, English, Geometry, and Algebra I or
II, if necessary. Students enrolled in the Music
program need to consult with their counselors
before enrolling in summer school.
We offer a variety of classes over a two
week period for students entering grades
fifth through eighth. Core classes in Math and
English are available. Enrichment classes
in ceramics, photography, music, Guitar
Lessons, Spanish, French, Art, Forensics,

Prep and a variety of athletic classes are also
available.
Besides the Academic and Summer Reading
courses for high school students, we will

desire additional information.

Dean's Notes
Attendance and Participation in
Extra-curricular School Activities
I want to again remind you of the school
policy on attendance and participation at
extra-curricular school activities. On page
45-46 of the 2012-2013 Student Handbook,
it clearly states…A student may not be
permitted to attend or participate in any
extra-curricular activity if the student is
absent for any portion of the school day. It
goes on to state…Participation in week-end
or “all day” activities and sporting events
requires that the student meet the same
instructional requirements on the school
day immediately prior to the event. And
finally, it states…Absences sanctioned
by the administration (certain schoolrelated activities, unavoidable conflicts
such as a funeral, emergency medical
appointments, etc.) are exempt from this
regulation. Parents arte expected to contact
the school in advance when the student will
be absent given the above conditions. The
administration reserves the right to review
cases involving extraordinary circumstances.
Please contact the Dean of Students if such
circumstances and conflicts occur.
Cafeteria and Lunch
On page 87 of the 2012-2013 Student
Handbook, it states…Off Campus lunch
deliveries are prohibited. Our cafeteria
staff works extremely hard to provide
nutritional and tasty lunch and break options
at an affordable price. If your student has
forgotten his/her allowance, please direct
him/her to contact Miss Jen King or me for
assistance. Thank you for your assistance
in this matter.
General Dress and Grooming Code
On page 39-42 of the 2012-2013 Student
Handbook, the dress and grooming
requirements for students is clearly stated.
Please review these expectations with
your student(s). Please assist the school
in the enforcement of these rules. For
girls, please pay special attention to skirt
and short lengths and to tights/stockings
styles and colors. For boys, please pay
special attention to belt requirements, hair
length and shaving responsibilities. For
all students, please pay special attention
to Sweaters, Sweatshirts, and Jackets style
and color requirements. Thank you in
advance for your assistance with these areas
of concern.
Fog Delay
During the winter months, the Kern County area
can experience heavy fog.
Please listen to the radio/television for the
following announcement:
"All high schools in the greater
Bakersfield Area are on a fog delay."
You can also call 283-1800, category 4613 or
log on to www.KGET.com.
NOTE: Garces will follow a fog delay called for
all high schools in the greater Bakersfield area.
On a fog delay, Garces’ first bell rings at 9:55 a.m.

Student Handbook Changes
We are busy making preparations for the next
academic year and I value your thoughts on
the school’s discipline policies. Please
contact me so that the Administrative Team
may consider your input before we make
our final decision on these policies for next
year. The Administrative team will finalize
the handbook by mid-April so please email
me, leave me a message or drop by my office
any time between now and then.
Student Drivers
As 16th birthdays come around we generally
have a new batch of student drivers. Please
remind your sons and daughters that all
student drivers are expected to park their
vehicle in the student lot and that parking
passes (available for $20 in the business
office) are required. Naturally, the rules of
the road apply on school property and will be
fairly enforced including statutes regarding
cell phone use and underage passengers. As
a reminder, at no time should a person be in
a moving vehicle without wearing a seatbelt.
Driving while talking on the phone is illegal
and hazardous to all. And, no person under
the age of 18 is to transport another person
under the age of 24 for one full year after
receiving a license. Student drivers will be
stopped and questioned if this is observed.
Please join us in encouraging your children
to keep this as safe a campus as possible.
Junior/Senior Prom
Plans are already being made for this
year’s Junior/Senior Prom. In the interest
of continuing the tradition of making this
a wholesome event, please make sure
your sons or daughters are appropriately
dressed for the occasion. The expectations
are outlined on page 42 of the 2012-2103
Student Handbook. If there is any question
about the appropriateness of an outfit
please contact my office before removing
the tags.
Senior/Summer Trips
“The End is Near!” Summer is just around
the corner and many vacation plans are
already being made. This is a reminder
that Garces Memorial High School does
not sponsor, endorse or encourage any
“senior” trips. These trips are organized
independently and are not, in any way
school affiliated. The school assumes no
responsibility or liability for “senior” or
summer trips.

By the time that you read this all the Catholic School Week activities will have taken
place. Our Grandparents mass on January
30th and also the Communion Breakfast on
February 1st. Thank you all for your contributions and participation at these events.
With Lent coming up soon, a look ahead
at spiritual activities. Since the last week
of January was so busy, I have postponed
the scheduled Adoration of the blessed Sacrament to a time to be determined during
Lent. Ash Wednesday on February 13th
will be an All School Mass. Then during
the last week of February we will have
Lenten Reconciliation Services for all students, as usual with their Theology classes.
In the first week of March, Fr. Greg Boyle,
S.J. the director of HomeBoy Ministries
and the author of "Tattoo’s On The Heart"
will speak at an All School Assembly. By
then we will expect all students to have
read the book.
Fr. Jim LaCasse, S.J.
Chaplain
During the final week of school, before
Easter vacation, we will also have a spiritual exercise, through the Theology classes,
centering on the Stations of the Cross.
CAMPUS MINISTRY
Lent
A reminder that Mass is celebrated every
morning at 7:20 AM. All are welcome, as
this is a great way to start your day, with
a prayer of thanksgiving and petition for a
great day.
Our Lenten activities will begin on Tuesday, February 12, with
our Mardi Gras Lunch. The cafeteria will be closed and numerous
clubs will be selling food from many of our local restaurants. This
is a great way to celebrate “Fat Tuesday” and support our clubs
on campus. Ash Wednesday Mass will follow on Wednesday,
February 13, at 9:40 in our gymnasium. All parents are welcomed
to join us.

Community Service Hours
Parents should have received an update of all service hours during
the month of January. Please check over these service hour
updates to make sure that all paperwork has been submitted. All
students need to complete at least 15 hours of community service
each year in any three areas: school, parish or community by the
last day of final exams. Seniors need to have all hours completed
and turned into Ms. Rosanne Chavez by the last day of senior final
exams in order to participate in graduating ceremonies.

Garces Memorial Annual fund Drive
The Garces Memorial High School Annual Fund Drive is an annual-giving program that provides critical support to help the
school make up the difference between what is charged in Garces Memorial tuition and the actual cost of a Catholic college
preparatory education.
The Annual Fund Drive is the mainstay of Garces Memorial’s fund raising efforts and helps support four critical areas:
•
•
•
•
The enhancement of the school’s already outstanding spiritual, academic and extracurricular programs.
The ability to recruit and retain the finest faculty and staff.
Need-based tuition assistance to deserving students who desire a Catholic education.
The upkeep and improvement of the existing grounds and facilities.
This is our single most important and critical fund-raising effort held at this school every year. It is the most effective way of addressing the needs of our school. All monies raised through the ANNUAL FUND DRIVE go directly toward keeping the quality of
education at the school at its very highest while keeping the cost of tuition affordable for our students and families.
