BADJA Meeting November 1, 2010 Publication: DJ Bill Ziemski www.billyzee.com Topic 1: Spotlight DJ Topic 2: Music Programing This turkey is not a member. Spotlight DJ The spotlight DJ has been our successful approach in gaining a personal insight of each member’s background. Members are asked to complete a questionnaire so we can learn about their entertainment approach, awards, equipment, and more. A member who completes a questionnaire is given front-page exposure on the BADJA website for a month. Previous spotlight DJs questionnaires can be viewed next to their companies profile under “Find a BADJA DJ” on the BADJA website. www.Badja.org Each monthly meeting begins with the current spotlight DJ telling us a little more about who they are, how they got their start, and where they are headed. The November 2010 spotlight DJ is Brad Hart, who has been a valuable member as our Web Master. Brad updates the Badja site and also sends leads to members from inquiries generated from the website. He comes from a long line of DJs in his family – brother DJ Chris Hart and father DJ Barry Hart. Visit Brad’s site at www.DJBradhart.com To find out more about DJ Brad and other spotlight DJs, visit www.Badja.org. Our goal is to have every member become a spotlight DJ. Members please send your completed questionnaire to DJ Billy Zee at Partybz@aol.com. Music Programming Badja program director, DJ Chris Hart led the November meeting on segues, dance floor fillers and general mixing. He gave many ideas on how to use fades, slap & go and a song’s structure to mix music. “A good rule of thumb is to play three songs per genre,” says Chris. Always read the crowd and create a wave of up and down momentum on the dance floor. This applies to bars, so patrons can get drinks and this applies to weddings, so all generations can enjoy a dance set. When mixing consider using all the tools at your disposal like samples, the cue button, the fader, loops, intros, outros, and of course beat mixing. Members received a handout of short sets, segues and some of DJ Chris’s favorite mixes. The list had many ideas to beat mix like “Billie Jean”, “Ice Ice Baby” and “Stayin’ Alive”, which are within the same BPM range. It is always fun to experiment with new ideas and to put different spins on the same popular music. After hearing a beat mix of Sean Paul’s “Temperature” into The Outfield’s “Your Love”, I worked it into a set this weekend! Remember that mixing music is an art form. You should always practice a new technique, so you don’t create a train wreck on the dance floor. When we opened a round table for discussion, we discussed many topics from DJ experiences to music services. Members have found music remix services from Promo Only, Virtual Remixes, Ultimix, and Backspin for songs and videos. You can find mash ups to simple intros and outros that could make your mixing easier and more dynamic. A special thanks to Chris for supplying the DJ equipment for the live demonstration of the listening examples. If you want to become a fan of DJ Chris then visit his Facebook fan page or email him at DjchrisHart@Gmail.com.
