During this one-on-one meeting they are introduced to the ideals of a Jesuit culture. These principles, known as the Graduate at Graduation, are: Open to growth, Intellectually Competent, Loving, Religious and Committed to Justice. Junior Family Conference: The summer prior to junior year, Cura Personalis The Jesuit ideal of Cura Personalis is a Latin phrase signifying care for the whole person. At St. Xavier we are intentional in our approach to how we interact with the young men that walk our hallways. It is our responsibility and sincere desire that all of the students attending St. Xavier High School feel welcomed and that we create an atmosphere where they feel a part of something greater than themselves. To this end, our faculty and administration take a deliberate approach to supporting all of our students and embolden them to cultivate their unique gifts and talents. St. Xavier offers a myriad of opportunities and programs that allow for this personal care. students once again meet with a member of the faculty or administration to review their first two years, and reflect on their personal journey at St. Xavier High School. In reflecting on these early experiences, young men establish goals as they begin to develop more significant relationships with others and grow in greater understanding of themselves. Freshman Guidance: The freshman and sophomore guidance office is comprised of five certified counselors who are assigned to each student. The counselor will care for and support each student during his freshman and sophomore years with the following objectives in mind: to understand their interests and strengths; meet with them in groups to ensure a safe and comfortable environment; to share concerns during these formative years; and to create future goals. College Guidance: College counseling focuses on preparing students to gain admittance into their first-choice college. The five certified counselors in this office work with students one-on-one to understand future goals and academic strengths. The ultimate outcome is that we assist each student in finding the best-fit college or university. MENTORING: Freshmen homerooms are organized by zip codes and neighborhoods to assist new students get to know other young men from their surrounding communities. Five seniors, known as Bomber Pilots, serve as mentors in each freshman homeroom. When a freshman enters St. Xavier, he is supported by upperclassmen and an intentionally choreographed system that will lead to a seamless transition from grade school to high school. ORIENTATION: To assist freshmen make the transition to St. Xavier, they participate in a two-day orientation program that includes student leadership, homeroom formation, prayer services, introductions to faculty and administrators, games, a building tour, and a walk through of their schedule. All of these activities are led by a trained group of 80 senior leaders who also serve as Bomber Pilots. Freshman House System: An academic and social journey with peers, the freshman class is comprised of just over four hundred young men from across the Tri-state area. It is often asked, “How do they find their place within the school?” St. Xavier has been pro-active in devising a house system that benefits academically and socially. The system, comprised of five groupings, gives students a place to call home within the larger school. The house structure is designed to achieve a number of goals, including the student’s personal and/or social adjustment as well as his academic adjustment. Under the auspices of a freshman house at St. X every student begins to experience what promises to be four life-changing years. EXTRACURRICULAR: St. Xavier High School offers more than 110 co-curricular activities, including 17 Division I athletic programs and a myriad of intramural opportunities. With such a variety of activities available, every student has the ability to become involved. Participation in extra-curricular opportunities encourages students to cultivate their gifts and further explore interests and talents. RETREATS AND MASSES: Retreats and masses offer students the opportunity to explore their spirituality with staff, faculty and fellow students in a safe and open environment. Sharing inspires students to discover more about themselves while opening their hearts in significant relationships with others.
