In this issue: From the Superintendent, 1 Calgary Foundation, 1 A New Way to Donate, 2 CAA Video, 2 Weston Building History, 3 Thank you, 5 Dear Calgary Arts Academy Community: I am pleased to inform you that we have been granted permission from Alberta Education to tender the renovation of the historic Weston Bakery building. This facility will be our new home for 300 middle school students. There will be 55 day tender/application / approval process for selecting a general contractor following the provincial School Building and Tendering Regulation protocol. All applications must be reviewed and evaluated. CAA Society Board and Alberta Education must approve the selected general contractor. We anticipate that demolition/construction will begin in April 2016. The estimated date for completion is February 2018. Recently, there have been many questions regarding the timeline for moving students out of Glenmeadows. This will not happen until we take possession of our new middle school campus. As the time draws closer, we will keep you informed. In the near future, we will be meeting with the Calgary Board of Education to ensure a smooth transition process. The bakery’s Edwardian-style is characterized by its red pressed brick exterior and its unique configuration of corralled brick bays and regular fenestration on the first and second storeys of the south and portions of the west facades. Multi additions have increased both the height and size of the building since it was first constructed, resulting in its present sprawling patchworkstyle form. Interesting Timeline….. 1930 Victoria Park site of the Golden West Bakery opens March 1930 consisting of Bakery building and heated Stable. 1936 Addition of Drive Shed between Bakery and Stable constructed. 1939 Weston Bakeries Limited purchase Golden West Bakery, bakery continues operating under name “Golden West Bakery.” 1944 One-storey flat roof addition of Women’s Lunchroom added over portion of original Bakery. 1945 One-storey flat roof brick addition constructed above eastern one-story portion of original Bakery, making entire bakery two-storeys in height. One-storey flat roof addition of Men’s Lunchroom constructed over Drive Shed. 1947 One-storey flat roof concrete structure serving as a Garage constructed at the northeastern edge of the site. Post 1977 One-storey side-gabled wooden frame building constructed between Garage and Barn. One-storey shed roof concrete block additions with five additional loading bays added. The bakery produced approximately 20,000 loaves of bread per day and employed 40 people in the first few years of business. The bakery building contained a showroom, offices, and bakery on the first floor with a cake decorating room, mixing room, and ingredient storage room on the second floor. The bakery’s fullheight basement was used to store wheat. The heated stable accommodated up to 26 horses. The construction of the Drive Shed in 1936 connected the Bakery and Barn. Further expansion of the building resulted in additions still evident today. The bakery’s name was changed to Weston Bakeries Limited in circa 1943, and was owned by the Weston family until it closed in 1989 and was purchased by the Calgary Stampede. The building is significant as a late example of Edwardian style commercial architecture and a rare representation of a style that once dominated commercial buildings in the 1900s to 1920s.
