Please tell us something about yourself My name is James Ogston, I run the company Ria Solutions UK Ltd. I have been working in Architecture for 14 years prior to moving into the design software market for CAD and 3D Design communication and presentation. I worked in the Autodesk arena for 6 years before realizing a different avenue of interest where I found at that time, 3D that was difficult costly and cumbersome to support and train, I then discovered a whole new focus on fun, affordability, intuitive and powerful 3D called SketchUp that has now positioned me to where I am today. I was heavily involved in detail construction design whilst spending my time in Architecture. I have been training many designers in 2D, 3D CAD software for 14 years, with standard, but more extensively in bespoke Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 training and support consultancy. With Ria Solutions we offer competitive software sales, support and training using major design applications to UK - European market. • How did you find SketchUp? I first discovered SketchUp whilst running an Autodesk Architectural Desktop (AutoCAD Architecture) Training Course in Lerwick, Shetland Islands for a design firm there. After 3 days of painstaking training an attendee named Mark Fuller mentioned how complex and time intensive, plus how costly ADT was and offered me a look at his new discovery software application called SketchUp. After class he presented to me 10 house designs all sitting in place on top of a site survey plan - using version 4 SketchUp. He displayed an onscreen animation of the project using pages, known now as scenes. I loved the sketchy edge effects he had applied but as a trainer of 3D CAD software I asked him a very important question. How long did it take to create the work and he mentioned - one day! Straight away I calculated that recreate similar definition and detail 3D work with the applications I knew very well in that time was impossible for me as an expert trainer at that time. At that point Mark Fuller mentioned it is called SketchUp you should look into this application. I really will return the favor to this gentleman one day for this lead. So Lerwick, his office was the golden blessed ground to start my SketchUp journey. My next goal was to contact the original creators of SketchUp - @Last Software. To find out if I could participate in spreading the word of SketchUp to the world, I was to learn that at that time operations were planned to set up SketchUp presence in UK and Ireland, Europe and beyond. And the opportunity for me to prove my capabilities and become a contract accredited trainer - reseller could be a good possibility. • When was Ria Solution founded? Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Ria Solutions was founded in August 2004. We had just started up Ria Solutions at that time and the company was so young. @Last Software requested us to meet up via conference call interview. Then we meet up in London to go through training requirement etc. So I was trained by the training manager and co-founder Mark Carvalho whom I really owe a lot to. He was my mentor. And I do miss him on the scene - thoughts shared by many. He ran the training department at @Last Software and is as far as I see - the voice of SketchUp. So I had the privilege to be trained by the training manager and co founder. • Tell us something your ATC Since the Google acquisition, Ria Solutions received Google SketchUp ATC status, as the first in UK and Europe. Having been involved with SketchUp pre Google and now to see it grow into an ever increasing giant, I love to see this 3D Design and communication tool’s simple message spread across the world. It is amazing to know that when I was first involved with SketchUp Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 training and sales it was a possible dream to maybe realize that only is SketchUp could get further out there how it would change many minds and ideas so that 3D can be more intuitive and not a tough struggle. It is now talked about by millions of people and how it integrates with Google Earth, Google Maps and Street View really places an all around a full virtual, communication tool that reaches out to each and everyone out there. It also does this in the most intuitive and interesting manner for not just designers but for hobbyists, kids and everyone alike. Google SketchUp not only just looks at general sectors of business in which many design software supports, but with the Google brand - it encapsulates a new and growing 3D trend for all. Google Earth, Google Maps and Street View really provide an all around a full virtual, communication experience. • What are the services and courses Ria Solution provided? We offer ATC training on full certified SketchUp courses, essentials 1 and 2, advanced skills, advanced landscape, geomodelling and Layout 3, SketchUp and presentation for non SketchUp users and Google Earth. We offer a fast and professional service to clients so that they see how time can be Used efficiently, working up great models and visuals with great economic value and just produce better professional working and presentation documents doing so. Our Main objective is that we and our clients enjoy and learn every time when working together use and we deliver on time with best results. We also offer live venue training across the UK, onsite or online web training services. Every client is important and 3D anyone can learn and enjoy the 3D experience too. Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 • What is the aim to start an ATC like Ria Solution? I have been so lucky to have a long standing relationship with SketchUp and with so many years of expertise, to see SketchUp grow in its infancy is remarkable. Alternative 3D and CAD was originally aimed at the computer geek. SketchUp in its simple form completely avoids that initial daunting feeling for any user who wishes to jump in. We always demonstrate the power and fun that ATC training delivers to anyone, even if they are not coming from design background, they will earn, develop and join SketchUp’s 3D modeler community experience that is why with the free and pro versions, anyone can make the choice exactly how much they want out of 3D and not the other way round - " I want more out of this but cant " feeling. Don’t forget, there is a simple and complex side when modeling in SketchUp, so anyone wishing to participate in ATC certification should have a good Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 review on Google’s online basic introductory YouTube training videos before attending. This really helps you to get more from our courses, and helps us to express the true meaning of SketchUp and its benefits. The best understanding of what SketchUp is about and how it should be utilized is to watch how industry experts use the application and as all the questions. Our ATC Services are built around years of expertise, its uses and work flows. SketchUp is a problem solver for design and construction. Its further power’s are shown when introducing Ruby script extensions to help you work much quicker and more efficiently. Our very interesting addition to Google SketchUp is of course LayOut 3 – SketchUp’s Paper space! We get great reactions from designers who for the first time learn that PRO and LayOut are just what was SketchUp was missing all along. We see many Design Professional presentation’s and CAD like documents being churned out Whether it is to simply communicate an idea, planning purposes or to work up marketing brochures web and graphics artwork, we see this new presentation tool as SketchUp’s parent. Our ATC and consultancy services offer Google’s certified training methods that provide each and every attendee with a unique understanding and skill base we believe in using our legendary SketchUp hands on approach handed down from the early existence. It is great to see the ATC channel grows with Google’s support and we often look back to our engagement with SketchUp and watch the 3D evolution spread to others. We do enjoy that. • How do you utilize SketchUp in Ria Solution? We use SketchUp for our clients, for our business and to train others plus offer Google SketchUp Pro sales. It plays a very important role in the business. Especially as costs are tight these days and deadlines are even Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 shorter. So we can deliver using SketchUp. Many of our client projects stayed unviewed acknowledging copyright but our models are vast in number and great in quality whether they are presented in SketchUp, LayOut or if supported in a rendering engine. The SketchUp file format is accepted more and more now; company copyright on SketchUp models is now as important as before and it is Almost like magic how the .skp and .layout file format has found its way into many offices and businesses. We break SketchUp into 3 categories - Geomodeling, conceptual, and detailed. We have always known that SketchUp can be used for detailed to working drawing outputs but we know and have proof that at this time it is best for specific sized projects and to specific detail at this time – unless you have a trained expert or experts to drive it. We see our clients use SketchUp to fully design Services (M&E) and sign off in 3D with the clients invested interests. 2D CAD like drawings using version 8 PRO LayOut 3. CONCEPT TO FULL DETAIL.... can be achieved again with expert training working up proposals cleanly and fast. Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 • Why do you prefer SketchUp? It pays for itself the first time you create a model. The new user experience is remarkable to watch. They have accomplished more in SketchUp than they could with any other without the same struggle. Also the affordability of it with the added option to dabble with the free version first. It is hugely extendable – using thousands of Ruby scripts. Anyone can relate to real 3D by touching and handling the model by themselves rather than the software dictating this. Decisions can be made early on and during regular design team and onsite meetings. Speed of use is there to realize .Simple interface dialog boxes to click less and just get a task done. The appearance and design of the toolset and interface style is attractive and favorable for anyone from kids to elderly, saying elderly - I trained a retired 75 year old Architect who was scared of computers and CAD for many years. He was enlightened and quite emotional when he completed the ATC essentials 1 and 2 one day course with us. SketchUp and LayOut versatility along with many companion products shows that businesses and individuals wish to learn and embrace it and this extends the ever growing SketchUp community. So why not start again and understand the needs of everyone. After all we all enjoy the real world – so why should complexity and terminology control that. • You are with SketchUp since @LastSoftware. Till date how do you see the evolution of SketchUp? I see the evolution of SketchUp’s 3D trend continue to grow but at a louder frequency and its welcome knock at your door – really expected as natures own way of reshaping 3D design. It started way back, the market just needs to see its power and personally experience it. Why work with an application that is well marketed and branded but takes weeks to work up something you can’t touch and share? Too much money and time is wasted out there. Referring back to my first experience with SketchUp at TAYCAD in Lerwick 10 houses in one day against 10 houses in one to two weeks using other software, does that add up?. Mark Fuller said to me – I’m not sure if the houses are accurately modeled but look at the detail. He was convinced at the outset. I see and Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 hear SketchUp awareness becoming stronger all the time. The word SketchUp is whispered and recognized being by many now. I am seeing many who looked at SketchUp a few years back and really didn’t appreciate it or think it would not evolve; they are now revisiting where they last left it. We do strongly feel the message and marketing of SketchUp now needs to be pushed. All other industry software apps are steering their way to realize SketchUp’s integration and toolsets more now than ever. Many discussion forums are being set up by folks who may or may not have seen it years ago but realize now what it’s all about • How do you like to see SketchUp develop in future day? Further development in LayOut to provide annotation links to the group or component models that would save typing time would be great for a more direct tagging feature When annotating drawings. More 2D drawing tools, hatches and dimensioning will be well received by all.offering a better understanding and integration of ruby scripts to avoid timely searching across the internet would be invaluable. Better management controls to extend SketchUp’s functionality in offices, better Model management controls in an office for IT and design team management. And more integration of current third party free form and scheduling tools, BIM integration to SketchUp and improved rendering and stylizing. Support to multi core processing and improved compression on file size especially with textures and complex models. In general terms I see SketchUp being the primary 3D tool for kids and educational establishments, small businesses to large commercial design firms alike. I see it as a new working trend and I think the penny could drop. It is like fashion. It is all about time and fashion. 25 Years of 2D and 3D CAD and we all still struggle. SketchUp takes you where you want to be straight away. • According to you what is the USP of Ria Solutions? We not only offer professional sales, training and support as a specialist training and reselling provider, we get involved with our clients on projects Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 and work out the best workflows that both we and the client can achieve in the time scales and budgets allowed. With a close understanding of design and presentation, we talk and respond to each and every requirement that is required from us whether it is using SketchUp or other apps; after all we believe that with our multi faceted business skills come multi faceted workflows using different apps along with various training options. We often show clients what they can achieve in the shortest of time so that they realize the levels that they could reach themselves over time. We commit out time and are very passionate in what we offer. It’s the use of the software and not the thrills of glossy images that we focus on. Many clients we talk to are very clever and know that normally the big demonstration looks good and after sign up they are left with a bad taste in the mouth. When I used to work for the AEC CAD SIDE - TOO MUCH EMPHASIS was spent on after sales, support and training. We ARE ALWAYS LEARNING and receive positive responses direct from clients first time around – e.g. the software delivers a new and exciting way to work. SU offers that VERY CLEVERLY to all. Simple, fun, and powerful1 and wont break the bank. Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 • As a trainer how you have seen the potentiality of SketchUp as a designer tool? Search, Listen Realized, Explore and just do what you set out to do. No strings attached. It’s branded with Google behind it. Focuses on a pleasurable invite to play and learn 3D that has taken software industries at least 25 years to convince the market to buy into but still struggles to deliver to all along with hidden costs. If any child picks SU up that says it all. It is full 3D without any hidden disappointments. Its cost – it comes in both free and pro version. I’m sure your intelligence will guide you there? It is easy to use. If you buy it you will get complete satisfaction and many benefits. • How is the popularity of SketchUp among the newbie designer? It is magnetic to designers and they are keen to learn more. They can achieve much by surprise. It will pull users over to use it very quickly. All newbie designers from what I see is that they use it during their academic years and fully during employment. It is very well received and they are lucky to have it in helping to express their visions and concepts. Most of the designers will be using or should be using it. • Please give some advise to the budding designer Firstly, understand that SketchUp is a designer’s best friend; it has no boundaries as to its capabilities. You can be as loose or as accurate as you wish with plenty scope to keep things simple or add more complexity before further embellishing your designs using inbuilt styles, inbuilt or external rendering and animation apps.Try it out for free and then learn the benefits of the pro version. Take your ideas and concepts and bring them to life and avoid lengthily explanations to client and design team members. Use the model to engage their ideas in a digital. It works well alongside others with SketchUp at its core. Will be the best 3D experience they could expect for their very own needs. Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 • What is your advice to the team of Sketchup ur Space? I love your new site. It invites new and easy focus and emphasis on SketchUp, its community and what everyone can realize about Google’s Design Software. There are valuable resources for information and takes each and everyone’s own personal SketchUp Space and presents personal experiences and opinions in a slick way to help get the word out there explaining many attributes and its community spirit. I am very happy to see this new resource available to the world without having to be a member of a hidden group of members before you get noticed. You have shown that. There is great importance and interest for each and everyone out there to learn the best SketchUp methods from Google’s first and longest established SketchUp Authorized Training Centre. Well done. Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 3DVinci SketchUp Projects-of-the-Month June 2010 1 Rendering for Free, Using Kerkythea By Bonnie Roskes Take a SketchUp model of a room with a window, in which shadows are displayed and sunlight is streaming in. SketchUp’s cartoon-like interface is very clear, but makes the room look unrealistic. Also, the overall look is very dark because SketchUp has no defined lights. A rendering application enables you to produce a more realistic view, by taking away edges, adding lights, and changing material properties. -23- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 There are numerous rendering applications out there, many of which are reasonably priced (a few are priced quite high). For this project I chose Kerkythea for the simple reason that it’s free. (Some other renderers are now, or will be, free for teachers and instructors. I will write about those in future projects.) Kerkythea is the precursor to the commercial product Thea Render. So while still available for free, Kerkythea is no longer actively supported, though there are still user forums and instructional materials out there. It’s a great application for getting your feet wet with rendering, and once you get a feel for it, you could explore more of its many option, or look into other rendering applications. Keep in mind that rendering can take a long time, particularly when you add properties to materials such as reflectivity, base colors, etc. So leave some time for this project, or at least keep some interesting reading on hand (or go grab some coffee) when your computer is processing for long stretches! The idea for this project came from a useful book I recently reviewed: SketchUp 7.1 for Architectural Visualization, by Robin de Jongh. -24- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Robin introduces several ways you can enhance your SketchUp model views, all of which take advantage of free software (such as GIMP and Virtual Dub), freely available entourage objects such as trees, furniture, and people, and freely available textures and materials. My full review of this book is available on (www.3dvinci.blogspot.com), at the entry dated May 27,2010. my blog For this project, it helps to have some basic knowledge of Google SketchUp (though detailed instructions are provided). In particular, it’s important to know how to zoom, orbit, and pan the view. If you need more information on how to get started, and a description of some basic tools, please read 3DVinci’s Getting Started Guide (PDF). PC users: go to http://www.3dvinci.net/SketchUp_Intro_PC.pdf. Mac users: go to http://www.3dvinci.net/SketchUp_Intro_MAC.pdf. Step 1: Download Kerkythea 1. Go to http://www.kerkythea.net/joomla. Click the “Downloads” link. -25- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 2. There are two downloads we need. First, the application itself; click “Application.” 3. Select your version (PC or Mac) and install it. -26- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 4. Once that’s done, go back to the Downloads page and find the second download: click “Integration.” 5. Click “SketchUp.” -27- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 6. Download and install SU2KT. This provides the export mechanism from SketchUp into Kerkythea. Step 2: Set up the SketchUp Model 1. I’ve provided a model for this project, which includes a pre-set view. Go to the Google 3D Warehouse (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse) and search for “kerkythea scene roskes” (watch your spelling!). Then click the download link and open the model in SketchUp. The model looks strange in this view, but the long box is the room itself, and the large picture includes the view that you’ll see outside the room’s window. (The picture is merely an image I found online, which I imported, enlarged, and placed directly in front of the window.) -28- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 2. Orbit to a view like this, in which you can see the room’s ceiling. There are two red rectangles there, which is where the lights will go. Lights can’t be created in SketchUp, but you can (and should) define where they will go. (You could also add the physical lights within Kerkythea, but it’s easier to create them in the SketchUp model.) -29- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 3. At the top of the SketchUp window is a tab with “Scene 1.” Click this tab, which takes you to the view that will be exported into Kerkythea. 4. Display the Shadows toolbar (PC: View / Toolbars / Shadows, Mac: View / Customize Toolbar, then drag the Shadows toolbar to the main toolbar). Click the icon shown below to turn shadows on, and use the sliders to adjust the time of year and time of day. Stop when you see some sunlight coming in through the window (yours can look different than what’s shown below). -30- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 5. If you don’t see the toolbar with the Kerkythea tools, display it (PC: View / Toolbars / SU2Kerkythea, Mac: View / Customize Toolbar and find the relevant toolbar). Click the first icon: Export model to Kerkythea. 6. Choose Yes for exporting geometry (there are no lights and the other options aren’t relevant). Then click OK. 7. When the export is complete, you’ll be asked if you want to open the image in Kerkythea. Choose No - it’s easier to open Kerkythea first. -31- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 3: Render in Kerkythea 1. Open Kerkythea, and use File / Open to open the exported image you saved. You should see a wireframe version of your view (the space shown will be a bit larger than the actual view, but the final product will mimic the SketchUp view). -32- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 2. From the Kerkythea menu, choose View / Adjust / Solid Rendering (or press the V key). All the materials have their base colors, with no translucence (the windows are solid). In the Lights list along the left side, the only light is the sun outside, as it is defined in SketchUp. 3. To see how this initial view would look after rendering, click the Start Render icon. -33- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 4. Accept the default settings (you can see that there many rendering options!) and click OK. This render shouldn’t take much time, and you can see the progress in Kerkythea’s title bar. When all is complete, the Quick View pane shows how the final render will look (pretty dark). -34- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 5. To save this rendered image, click the Image icon. 6. This opens the Rendered Image window, in which you can see the full rendered scene according to the SketchUp view. It’s dark because no lights are defined. If the image is too large, use the + and – magnifying glass icons. You could use the options and sliders on the left to adjust the image’s properties, and if you wanted to save the image you would click Save. But since we’ll be adding lights and other properties, you can skip saving this image (unless you just love it). Close this window. -35- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 7. Back in the Kerkythea window, click one of the red rectangles in the ceiling, which represent the lights. Both rectangles are highlighted, and their material (Color_A01) is indicated with a star. 8. Right-click on the material name, and choose Apply Material / Basic Pack / Diffuse Light. (As you can imagine, there are more material packs available, as well as other types of lights, but you can get great results with the default options that are provided.) -36- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 9. We can now check how this will look: click Start Render again (this time it will take longer to complete), then click Image. The scene is now much lighter. To compare this scene with the one we’ll create next, save this image (click Save in the Rendered Image window). 10. Now we’ll add a couple more properties. Click the blue window of the room, whose translucent glass material now gets the star. -37- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 11. Right-click on this material and choose Apply Material / Basic Pack / Thin Glass. Now you can see through the glass. 12. Now we’ll add a shiny floor. Select the floor to indicate its material (wood), and right-click on this material and choose Edit Material. -38- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 13. The options here are a bit overwhelming, but we just need one: click Reflection. On the left side of the Material Editor window, the current reflection color is black, which means the wood is not at all reflective. 14. Right-click on Reflection and choose Add Color. -39- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 15. A lighter version of black (gray) would keep the floor’s color and make it shinier. But let’s change the floor’s base color as well: choose a medium blue (or any other color you like). Then click Accept. 16. To close the Material Editor window, first click Apply Changes, then click Close Editor. (If you don’t apply your changes, Kerkythea won’t ask if you want to save changes). 17. Render again (this will take the longest - go make some coffee), and here’s the result: a blue shiny floor and a more accurate window. -40- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 18. If you think the window looks the same as before, zoom in more closely. In the most recent rendering, you can see a faint reflection of the room’s paintings. Before you assigned the glass material to this window, its material was only a plain translucent color, with no other properties you’d find in glass. So the previous rendering had no window reflection. As you can see, there are a million ways you can play around with the various material options, so take some time and see what you come up with! You can get some pretty stunning images with Kerkythea’s standard defaults, too. If you try this project with your children or students, and have great rendered images you’d like to share, please let me know! I will be happy to blog about it, and maybe feature it in a future newsletter. Contact me at bonnie@3dvinci.net. Thanks! -41- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Article on D-cad (The Google ATC, India) D-cad is the first Google Authorised Training Centre in India for Google SketchUp & Google Earth. We were awarded as Google ATC in 2007. Professionally, we are an Architectural & Town Planning Firm. The Principal Architect is Ar. Anil Nimesh. He has great vision for Indian Professionals. He has a keen interest in making Professionals aware about advance & affordable Software Technology available worldwide. He first started in July 2005 and introduced two softwares i.e. Intellicad & SketchUp in India. In this relation, he had organised an International Seminar on 'Reinventing the IT Solutions' at S.P.A., Delhi. There are certain facts which every Professional has to face i.e. buying Desktop/ Laptop & Software. Most of the time Software are costilier than Hardware. Thus, no option left to choose Pirated one. It was first time when Ar. Anil Nimesh had introduced softwares suitable serving professional need which are Lower than the cost of Hardware. Today, lots of Professionals learnt & accepted the SketchUp as a most suitable software for 3D work in terms of simplicity, user friendliness and its professional nature. But, still stating "SketchUp as a Professional software" is rare as lots Professionals are not completing aware of the Software knowhow. But, Ar. Anil Nimesh had proved long time back. -42- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Initially, Professionals didn't agreed on this fact and 1 / 2hrs Demonstrations were not sufficient to explain the software's strength. So, he decided for 'No More Demonstration'. Since then i.e. year 2005, he started giving training on SketchUp and Software Application in the respective Professions. So, enough time to explain, prove and train on SketchUp and its professional features. The M/s Jacobs (a UK based firm), Ahmedabad was the first trained Architectural Office in Oct. 2005. And then, he made a statement that “3D Modeling is no more difficult and SketchUp is a professional software”. The first Base Camp was conducted in July 2007 at S.P.A., Delhi. All we need to train a Participant was that he must know hand drafting. So, many Old Age Architects came forward to learn SketchUp. The most known participants were Mrs. Tripta Khurana (The Chief Architect, Delhi Metro Rail Corportation) & Mrs. Manju Safaya (The Chief Architect, HUDCO) and so on. We did Base Camps in Dehradun, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Roorkee, Bangalore and Allahabad. Now, on an average, almost 100-150 Architects get training on SketchUp every year. Our Client list is mentioned in our website. India is full of Talented Professionals. But, most of the Professionals are not able to project their Original ideas in their Work. -43- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 They are talented but they hidden & surviving somewhere in the Country. There may be so many reasons but one of main reason is 3D Visualisation of their ideas. They design well but Client is not capable to percieve those ideas correctly/completely. Hence, Software is solution or medium but beyond their pocket. So, use Google SketchUp free version (unlimited) or Google SketchUp Pro which is for US$495/- lower the cost of Hardware. This software goes with your thoughts if you know how to command it. In SketchUp, making Geometry like tensigrity structure or geodesic forms is a seconds job. Why Training? As all of us know that there are lots of YouTube tutorials are available. It will give you part knowledge to operate the software but not the complete knowledge. That is also after doing so much of efforts, experiments, hit & trial on those tutourials over period of 6 months or more. After this great efforts, if a Professional think that we knew SketchUp and don't need any training. So, we say 'You don't need Training' to those Professionals. But, if you are experienced enough in SketchUp and still keen to learn. So, don't mind if we say, we'll train you but we'll take you as Zero in SketchUp. :-) It is beacuse, there are so many basics not covered in YouTube Tutorials which has a major relation with Advance Modeling. Your simple thought to learn more, give us enough boost to give more. Thus, we train only to those Professionals who know that at Google ATC to learn more and in a systematic manner. Why from D-cad? D-cad provides 'After Training Support' free of cost. It can be learning some basics or difficulties in Projects while using SketchUp. We are happy to serve you (the Trained Participants) beacause we take your Question as a Knowledge/ Learning. -44- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 What we focus during Training? We focus on SketchUp Software's Concept, learning of Commands, Combination of Commands, Hidden Commands, Knowledge & Importance of Hardware Configuration, different Software behaviour & their utilities, Issues & their solutions, Techniques, Efficienciency in working, Tips & Tricks and Application in Profession. At the end of the Training Course, we take Tests. Covering all these make our courses Unique in the World. That means different among Google ATCs worldwide. Types of Courses 1. Mastering Google SketchUp with Basics & Advance 3D Modeling for Architects or Interior Designers 2. Mastering Google SketchUp with Terrain Modeling 3. Mastering Google SketchUp with Realistic Rendering using SU Podium 4. Mastering Google Earth Pro (Limited to Govt. Organisation) 5. Mastering Google SketchUp with Geomodeling in Google Earth (Limited to Govt. Organisation) Deliverables Google Certificate, Software Handouts, Training Kit etc... but all after clearing certain test during the training. Entourage Arts services the entire Canadian market providing SketchUp training classes coast to coast. Susan Sorger, an architectural illustrator, is the owner and operator of Entourage Arts, a company which was established in 2003, providing hand-rendered entourage image collections in SketchUp ™ format as well as PNG format for rendering applications such as Photoshop™ and Piranesi ™. Susan was well-acquainted with SketchUp™, having employed it as the basis for her architectural illustrations as far back as 2002 with SketchUp™ Version 2 and, as a very active member of the, then, SketchUp™ forum, she was well known to the @Last SketchUp team in Boulder. In late 2006 Susan filled-in briefly as a contract trainer for the Google SketchUp™ Boulder office and was invited in 2007, as an already established SketchUp-related business with a web presence, to become an Authorized Training Center for Canada under the new Google model for providing training services. -46- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Classes are provided across Canada, in rented computer facilities. The courses offered are the Essentials 1 and 2 classes as developed by Google SketchUp™, and Advanced 1 and 2 developed by Susan Sorger, Entourage Arts. These Advanced Classes were developed at a time when Google did not offer an Advanced Class curriculum and the decision to continue to offer their own is related to isolating all “CAD” related materials into a single halfday course as this was deemed to better serve the Canadian market. Susan has also developed a 1 week full-day camp curriculum for campers aged 9 to 11 and a version for ages 12 to 15. The curriculum is well-documented with an instructional DVD for councillor training and is licensed to interested camps in North America. In December of 2010, Entourage Arts opened their own training facility located in their offices in Vaughan, Ontario and all Toronto classes are conducted here. Classes continue to be offered in rental facilities across Canada though regularly scheduled classes occur only in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Vaughn/Toronto at this time, though plans are in place for additional locations. Entourage Arts has also offered classes in Ottawa, Halifax, Victoria and Montreal, in English. We do have a French speaking Google SketchUp Authorized Trainer in Montreal, Architect Mario Chabot, however, since our materials are in English and they have not been translated, the training provided by Mario is of his own design. We do not schedule formal classes in French in Montreal, instead referring clients to Mario. Our Google Authorized Halifax trainer is Architect Peter Henry. We have recently welcomed Architect, author and ArchiCAD trainer, Dwight Atkinson as a trainer for our western provinces: Manitoba to British Columbia. -47- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Entourage Art also provides webinar classes with a unique curriculum and private corporate training across Canada. Entourage Arts is dedicated to bringing SketchUp™ training to as many communities in Canada as possible, however the Canadian Market provides some unique challenges. With a population equivalent to only that of California, the Canadian population is scattered over an extensive territory from one coast to another with 5 hour flight times to reach a given market a common occurrence. “Our maximum class size is 10”, states Susan Sorger, “though the average tends to be smaller. In order to just meet our costs for classroom rental, airfare and hotel we need to have a minimum of 4 individuals averaged over the 2 days encompassing 4 half-day modules. On more than one occasion we have decided to go ahead with small classes even though we did no more than break even. We face an additional issue that in smaller communities, there are no computer facilities adequate for SketchUp™ Training.” Nevertheless, Entourage Arts is actively engaged in plans to expand the roster of cities offering regularly scheduled classes. In addition to exploring modeling strategies and options, we developed hybrid drawings that merged hand drawing techniques with SketchUp models. The group created drawings using a simple “overlay and trace” method and the more digital method of “composite drawing” that combined color prints of SketchUp scenes with different hand drawing techniques. The results were quick and very effective for communicating design ideas. Jim Leggitt Drawing Workshop in Denver, April 28, 2011 SketchUp Overlay and Trace Method -51- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 1- SketchUp Massing Model. The subject was a simple residential design from the 1930’s. I built a basic SketchUp model using floor plans and elevations that I scanned from a classic book on residential design. I exported an eye-level perspective scene and printed it in color on 8.5x11” paper. Step 2 - Overlay Drawing. One of my students, Marc Applebaum, AIA sketched over the print with a red pencil to block out the car and other elements, then drew over the scene with a Pilot Fineliner pen on a sheet of tracing paper. His pen and ink drawing captured the basic house model view and added site detail such as walls, steps, trees and shrubs. -52- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 3 - Final Color. Marc completed the drawing with a wash of Chartpak AD markers and added texture with Prismacolor pencils. He built up shadows and contrast with a dark cool gray marker. The overlay drawing took less than 60 minutes from initial redline mockup to final coloring! SketchUp Composite Drawing Method Detailed SketchUp Model. More developed than the overlay and trace massing model, this model of the same 1930’s house was refined with materials and components. Roofing material was selected, 3D tree components added and a classic car imported from SketchUp 3-D Warehouse. I established an identical view as the previous drawing exercise, exported a high resolution jpeg, printed the image on 11x17” bond paper and drew directly onto the color print with Prismacolor pencils and Chartpak AD markers. Final Composite Drawing. The print from my SketchUp model was first colored with very light Chartpak AD markers and then over-traced with a black Prismacolor pencil. The final image was scanned at 300dpi. -53- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Waterfront Composite Drawing. This semi-detailed SketchUp “stage set” model was constructed with the goal of establishing a single perspective view in which a composite drawing was developed. The model view was exported into SUPodium to render glass and water reflections. The final SketchUp view was lightened in Photoshop and printed 11x17” on coated bond paper. -54- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 1 - Ink Line Delineation. Using a Pilot Fineliner pen, Marc sketched directly onto the print and illustrated the different buildings, people, landscaping and signage. To emphasize distance, he concentrated detail in the foreground and faded his linework in the distance. Much of the original SketchUp model view was untouched on the left side of the scene. -55- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 2 - Final Composite Color. Marc added Chartpak AD markers and Prismacolor pencils directly onto the print and completed the drawing in less than 90 minutes. This “hybrid” approach to drawing combines detailed SketchUp models with a hand drawing process which results in very effective presentation “Tradigital Drawings” - the merging of traditional hand drawing techniques with digital models. And architectural designing is not an exceptional. That’s why Google has started Authorized Training Centers all over the world. Though there are many online tutorials available on SketchUp, the users find difficulty while using the SketchUp professionally. That’s why Google Authorized Training Center is here to provide the proper knowledge on professional usage of SketchUp. It is very important to have a proper course to methodically learn SketchUp. For that reason Google introduced different courses according to the requirements and proficiency of the users. From a beginner to an advance, Google ATC for SketchUp has all types of course suites for each genre of the learners. The courses are: • • • • • GOOGLE SKETCHUP ESSENTIALS 1 GOOGLE SKETCHUP ESSENTIALS 2 GOOGLE SKETCHUP PRO ADVANCED LANDSCAPE GOOGLE SKETCHUP PRO ADVANCED SKILLS GOOGLE EARTH PRO ESSENTIALS Here we can have a small discussion on the each course Google ATC offered: -57- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 GOOGLE SKETCHUP ESSENTIALS 1: Google SketchUp Essentials 1 is the starting point of the SketchUp learning. This course contains some basic knowledge of SketchUp. This course is recommended for the new users and for those who have little experience in drawing and wanting to learn three dimensional modeling. The person who has control of mouse of the WINDOWS and MAC OS X along with some basic knowledge can have the eligibility of grabbing the course. After completion of the course the users will have the understanding on how to use the tools for creating and manipulating 3D forms, create and apply surfaces to a model; import components from Google Warehouse, position and export SketchUp models to Google Earth. GOOGLE SKETCHUP ESSENTIALS 2: Google SketchUp Essentials 2 is designed for those who has some basic knowledge on SketchUp and Google Earth and especially for those who wish to deepen 3D modeling to discover the full potential of Google SketchUp. The people who have completed the One Earth essentials or master the basics of this software like the environment and interface of SketchUp – modeling objects in two or three dimensions – Navigation and visualization of 3D models. -58- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 After completion of this course, the users will be able to use SketchUpto manage the 3D geometry by creating and manipulating groups and components; import information into SketchUp from Google earth, use Photomatch to add photographs to the models; create, edit, apply and mix styles; create a basic presentation. GOOGLE SKETCHUP PRO ADVANCED LANDSCAPE: Google SketchUp Pro Advanced Landscape is a discipline that encompasses many workflows that result in designs ranging from human scale site fixture to regional master plans. While many of the designins of this course can be created from scratch, often AutoCAD files, surveyor data, hand renderings and existing photography are all incorporated in the design process as well as the end result. Expressing all this information in three dimensions will greatly facilitate communication of the design to the others. After completing the Essential 1 & 2, anyone can opt for this course. After completion of the course the users will be able to create 2D geometry in 3D environment, create and manipulate 3D faces, maintain a coplanar geometry and use of interface, apply material, use image in the model, add location geo location from Google Earth and many more things. My interest in creating a VR can be traced long time ago. way way back when I was using Max Release 1.5. I would like to try one here using Google Sketchup right after I posted and interesting tutorial using Vray for Rhino. Check it out HERE. How did I start in SketchUp? Here is a screen grab on the scene I used for my IES tutorial. Basically, I placed my camera in the middle of the room. I created a line and place the camera here. 2. All you need to do is to adjust the height of the camera by moving it long the Z axis. Here is my screen grab. The camera is about 1.2 meter above the floor level. -60- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 3. Camera type:. In Vray SKetchup the Camera type must be Spherical and the Field of View (FOV) must be 359.9 degrees. 4. Image aspect ratio Lastly the image aspect ratio in vray must be 2.0 where the width is 2 times the height. In the Vray output size, tick Override Viewport. Image below shows the image output I am using. -61- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 5. Here is the render First of all if you are looking and interested with Panorama. This is a good site to visit. Click HERE. It is important to Vray SketchUp will create your panoramas but not the movie. Therefore you will need a different piece of software - a "viewer" to display the panorama as a movie or in the web page. The viewer like Quicktime for instance need two things: first the image itself, and second the information about the image, such as whether it is 360 degrees wide or less than that, whether the image file is cylindrical2 or spherical2, cubic, fish eye, projection, etc. Using quicktime, flash are excellent since you dont have to use web to view them. All you need is a flash player movie or a quicktime movie. Here is the simple workflow how to put now your spherical render. -62- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Workflow 1: Using Pano2VR. You can download the shareware here. Step 1: Open Pano2VR -63- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 2: Input Type: Auto Panorama: Spherical Browse the location of the rendered image in Vray SketchUp -64- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 3: Panorama Parameters You can adjust the panorama parameters. In my case, I did not touch it. -65- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Step 4: Output Enter your output. In my case I used quicktime That's it. Here is my finish one using pano2Vray shareware program. If you want to download click HERE. -66- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Some other workflow as follows: Workflow 2: Using GoCubic Tutorial from Panoguide HERE. Workflow 3: Using Pano Press Another cool way using using PanoPress. You have to have Wordpress install 1. Download & unzip Panopress 2. Upload Panopress to your wp-plugins folder 3. Activate Panopress in your WordPress admin plugins page 4. Configure Panopress settings in the admin page 5. Optional: Upload your KRPano or Flash Panorama Player global swf file if you are using PanoPress with a global viewer for all panoramas on your site 6. Upload your KRpano Pano2VR, or Flash Panorama Player panoramas to your site via ftp 7. Enter the shortcode in your post Workflow 4: Hosting your Pano to Pano sites The easiest so far is using site to host your spherical panorama, like www.360cities.net, but I am not sure with this. I beleive that the one I did is in jeopardy of loosing the hosting, because it was not a real city nor a real environment. All you need to is to sign up and upload your image. Then you can choose what type you want. Here is the hosted image. -67- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Showcased Images -68- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Showcased Images -69- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Showcased Images -70- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Art Institute Of Colorado: The Art Institute of Colorado is located in Denver, one of America's great cities and a location sure to inspire your creativity. My dream came true when I discovered V-Ray!" -119- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 THE STORYTELLERS You have always been connected to the art of visualization in one way or another. Would you tell us more about yourself? I was born in 1979 in Alicante, Spain. After being trained in traditional painting at a few schools, I discovered the world called CG. After school, I moved to Madrid and began working for a visual effects company. That stint didn’t last too long due to the lack of demand for visual effects in the Spanish market at the time. It was then that I switched to the architectural visualization (VIZ) business. I worked for several companies before taking a sabbatical for a year to work on an “already built work” visualization series, which has now been stitched together into a short animated CG piece called “The Third & The Seventh.” Despite my background, I’ve always been interested in film-making – both cinema and commercial advertisements – since I can remember. I now have several possibilities heading toward the live-action direction, and I think this may be my opportunity to experiment with actual shooting added to seamless CG environments. I think it will be a huge field for me to explore! -120- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 What is the driving force of your inspiration? How is your production organized? I find inspiration in the aesthetics of the fine arts; specifically painting, but even something as varied as architecture. For technical reference, I find inspiration in still image photography for static renderings, and TV and film for animation. Production varies. Although I’ve worked alone so far, the production of “T&S” has been much more chaotic and relaxed than the “Silestone” project. With the TV commercial I had a customer and deadlines, so I had to follow organized production steps. Are you working alone? Can you share something about your recent projects? At the moment I’m still working and directing alone, but in the case of “Silestone,” I have had the invaluable assistance of a former colleague and good friend of mine, Juan Angel Martinez. Right now I’m focusing my career in the direction of TV commercials and films. I will never fully leave my work with CG, but I find that I’m integrating real filming with CG elements more often. Building an entire CG world with a high level of photorealism for a single virtual piece can be draining! -121- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 THE INSPIRATION Silestone - “Above Everything Else” is an impressive recreation of real things. Can you share the ideas behind that master piece and details about the project? For this project there was no intermediary agency, only a direct client. As a result, I was lucky to be able to apply a high degree of creativity. The goal was for me to present a few global concepts for the client to choose from. Once chosen, I began to develop the story-board. My original intention was to shoot the whole commercial, but after reviewing the shooting-board, and being conscious of the deadlines and budget, I quickly realized that it would be impossible. I would have much more control over the slow motion elements by using a completely CG environment. I thought, “ok … V-Ray can give me the level of photorealism that I am looking for without a problem.” Most of the inspiration for this project came from professional photographers and TV commercials. Let us go back in time and talk about that other amazing project of yours: The Third and the Seventh, which is a full CG animated piece that illustrates architecture art across a photograp hic point of view. We will be grateful if you tell us more about it. -122- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Initially I didn’t intend to make the piece so long! In the beginning it was to be a simple show-reel of some jobs I’ve been collecting over time. Then I thought of giving it a narrative history, but I couldn’t shape it. I think at the end it became a mixture with a character (the photographer and his camera) with no history. I see it as a journey through architectural elements from the closed to the open, and from darkness to light; told through the eyes of a photographer and nature (with lots of surrealist elements). What was most complicated? Is there a difference in creating and rendering projects so different? Technically, there was not much difference in these projects, except for the fact that in “Silestone,” there were many more animated elements. However, the pre-production and production were two completely different philosophies. With one, I had much more of a margin regarding the final product, while the other was much less flexible with limited delivery time. How long did it take you for the whole 3D production in the projects? Did you make everything by yourself? “T&S” had a very relaxed process, and I took several breaks, but in general terms it took around a year and a half from start to finish (including the production of SFX and music). With “Silestone” I had to be faster and much more efficient. The entire production took two months and two weeks for the composition, post-production and music. Juan Angel Gracia was with me in production during several stages of the process: modeling, animation, etc. Two other old friends of mine were in charge of the music (ZipZap Music). -123- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 THE BACKSTAGE EXPERIENCE You have trusted V-Ray for the visualization of your creative projects for a long time. Why VRay? Long before spending nearly ten years working in the visualization world, I used CG as a tool in other types of work, but after studying painting I became obsessed with light. I used to spend hours trying to simulate global illumination using very primitive tools … and it was a nightmare! Around the year 2000 rendering engines that integrated GI became popular and I began using them. After examining, testing, and working with several of those engines, I determined that V-Ray was by far my best option for VIZ environments. Surprisingly I gradually realized that it also fits well into other types of work! Did you find it easy and satisfying to work with all of the V-Ray materials and lights in your scenes? Of course. I’ve been working with V-Ray materials and lights for more than eight years. In addition, I think both sides (lights and materials) are very flexible and powerful. So far they have covered all of my needs. Have you used any of the effects that the V-ray Physical Camera provides like the depth of field (DOF) effect or the motion blur? If yes, were you satisfied with the result? Yes and no. I rarely use these camera effects for the final image because I think I have much more control and flexibility when I apply these types of effects in post-processing programs. However, such effects implemented in the V-Ray Physical Camera are extremely accurate to emulate the real lenses. In my daily workflow I’ve always tried to replicate, in detail, all of the factors of a real camera. I know in advance what depth of field will have a lens and how much blur there will be in a particular scene. It is invaluable. -124- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Did you use render elements ? If so, how were they integrated into the pipeline? Were they useful and easy to use during the postproduction stage? I try to keep this issue as simple as possible. Actually, I need passes like depth and speed to make motion blur and DOF effects in postproduction. Sometimes, when it’s necessary, I also compose the parts related to the caustics and volumetric lights. The object ID is really useful in some cases where you need to refine this or that particular object, but I rarely completely disintegrate the final image in sub-elements such as direct light, GI, reflection, etc. ... to re-compose again. The entire composition of elements is mounted in postproduction (AE), but I spend the most time color correcting. Were you satisfied with the capabilities that V-Ray provided in terms of mat ching real footage and CG images? In this sense, I have not had much experience yet because all of my work that has been officially released is based on full CG. But yes, I’m very satisfied with the internal tests I’ve done so far. -125- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 Did you take advantage of the V-Ray GI solutions? Did you find them useful while rendering your animations? Of course! I couldn’t imagine V-Ray without GI. The GI has always been a fundamental requirement for me. I couldn’t imagine a high degree of photorealism without GI, so for me, it is one of the most important aspects of V-Ray – if not the most important! In addition, I have not seen a better relation of GI quality and speed. Regarding animations, well, there was never any problem to animate fly-through cameras with static environments, but things began to get quite complicated when objects were also animated in the same space. Fortunately the new improvements implemented in V-Ray 2.0 successfully resolved these problems in a very high degree. I am very satisfied when I meet with this kind of plane; I no longer think, “Oh my gosh, another plane-nightmare!” It is one less thing I have to take care of because VRay takes care of it. What types of shaders were used for the creat ion of the objects in your scenes? Did you take advantage of the capabilities of the V-Ray sub surface scatter materials? About 90% of the time I use the default VRayMaterial, which is extremely flexible and has solved most of my problems. Other shaders are very useful depending on the situation in which I need them. The effects of sub-surface scatter are one of my favorites. V-Ray offers many possibilities here: the SSS effect integrated into the VRayMaterial, VRay2SidedMtl, and VRayFastSSS2. For example, in the “Silestone” TV commercial I used three shaders in many situations! -126- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 What were the main things you are concerned with when aiming at photorealistic images? Can you choose and point out one feature of V-Ray that contributed the most for the realism in your scenes? Actually, I think it is a complement of all the elements: GI, shaders, lights, etc., but, it’s true that the implementation of the AO algorithm in its VrayDirt form has completely changed my way of thinking and working. Now it’s definitely faster to achieve better photorealism. What other V-Ray features were useful for the working processes of Silestone and The Third and the Seventh? It’s hard to enumerate some features in particular, because the beauty and utility of this engine lies in all of its aspects as a whole; but of course, it would have been impossible without the help of VRayProxy. -127- Sketchup Ur Space May, 2011 CUSTOMER BENEFITS How do you evaluate V-Ray in terms of rendering speed? It’s very fast. Every day I see V-Ray as an extension of the real tools that you can actually use in reality (materials, lights, cameras, etc.) in the CG virtual world with great precision and convenience. This is mainly due to its speed. What would you recomm end add ing in future versions of V-Ray? For a long time we (the user community) have been asking for lens effects which are already implemented in version 2.0! I think the combination between Vertex - Paint and VRayDirt produce great results, but they have separate workflows and can result in very complex materials. Maybe it would be possible to have an integrated interaction such as a combined shader (or material). Are you satisfied with the overall result and what knowledge do you find important to be shared to other 3D art ists who also use V-Ray? I am very pleased overall and I see that the V-Ray evolution is headed in a good direction! With regard to the inspiration, I always recommend that the artist finds references outside of the CG community; there is too much obsession in using the work of other CG artists as a reference, and that ultimately creates copies of other copies, of other copies... With regard to the technical aspects, I think the key point is to understand the functionality of V-Ray and the possibilities it brings. May people only base their learning curve in tutorials, and that is good, but they do not use as much of the official help (manual) which has tremendous value in being able to understand the true performance of the software! Do you plan to include V-Ray into the workflow on future projects? No doubt!
