Izzie was the unconventional wild child with ‘a reputation’, fiercely independent yet vulnerable, these traits we find are reflected in the wine. Izzie shows her fresh youthful exuberance through her generous sweet fruit, balanced by her energetic youthful acidity. The child’s sweet and delicate nature is reviled as a delicate baklava pastry with lashings of honey and sesame. While her child like self-confidence and unique personality appears and reappears as you question the presence of cumin, nutmeg then coriander seeds!? This wine was a lot of fun to make and defiantly over delivers for its price point. Izzie is a rich fruit driven Non-Vintage style made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that showed less than classic Champagne characters. Parcels were vinified and aged in a number of methods and many arguments were had over the blending table as they were recombined to represent the personality of Izzie Lawson while keeping all the hallmarks that have made the premium Eliza Cuvee’s famous. Colour: Pale straw with apricot hues Aromas: Strawberries and cream, fresh apricots, rich Middle Eastern pastries and nutmeg Palate: The delicate aromas lead into an intensely giving palate highlighted by playful wooded curry spices while a velvety round mouth feel and creamy persistent mouse that lingers on the palate with a sweet lemon curd. Food suggestions: Izzie has the strength of character to match all manner of seafood even sauced white meats. Though pre-dinner nibbles, while outside enjoying long playful summer afternoons as Izzie Lawson did, fits perfectly. Eliza Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2008 The 2008 vintage was a model vintage in many ways. A cold wet winter and cool long growing season lead in to a late starting vintage. This extra time had a positive influence. Eliza is hand picked, whole bunches are chilled overnight and then pressed in the champagne basket press. This process is very gentle resulting in very fine juice and base wine. The traditional champagne blend is Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier which in these properties compliment each other and does give a complex elegant structure with a creamy finish. Colour: Pale straw. Nose: With a base note akin to a pre-dawn bakery: of fresh baguettes, brioche and a structured firm rye loaf. The alto clef is filled with fresh apricots to lemon cream and tart mandarin. And the soprano hits lifted notes of sweet cinnamon and ruby grapefruit rind. Palate: The wine begins with orange notes; grapefruit, cumquats and a west coast sunset. It is carried on by a mousse of fine persistent beads through a complex of lemon tart and nashi pear frappé. The finish takes you to Wimbledon for strawberries and cream where the creamy structure is cut through and carried by the persistence and tartness of the under ripe strawberries. Food suggestions. Pigeon breast or partridge both will marry in well. Eliza Sparkling Chardonnay 2008 2008 was only the second time in the history of the winery that a Blanc de Blanc was produced and made to the very limited release. Often considered Champagnes purist form Blanc de Blanc is a stile we only attempt in exceptional vintages. The Chardonnay grapes were handpicked and whole bunch were chilled overnight and then pressed in the champagne press as true to French Champagne law. Only the “ultra” free run was retained (the first 250L/T), giving a juice and wine with very little phenolic content. It was matured on lees in tank until triage. Where it was further aged on its lees before disgorgement and release. This wine has already been regarded as exceptional among Australian Sparkling wines and has a fine yet firm structure which will allow it to cellar and develop over the next 10 years. Colour: Pale straw with a green hue. Nose: Of almond bread cooked in an oven too hot and too quick resulting in doughie yet biscuitty characters these are cut through and propped up by grapefruit pith, a quite pretty lemon flesh and, lime zest. Palate: The wine tastes the way Audrey Hepburn looks. The Blanc de Blanc possesses the elegances and seductiveness in which she carries. The two are appear very approachable yet intimidating in their complexity. The pair shares the same posture which will help to carry the wine far into the future. Food suggestions. Atlantic oysters from Marennes-Olérons. Eliza Sparkling Rosé 2006 This 2006 Eliza Pinot Noir Rosé compliments the Eliza Sparkling Range. Padthaway Estate “Limited Release” Rosé NV This fresh Rosé wine was made by blending Pinot Noir pressings juice with Cabernet Sauvignon skins. The Pinot pressings juice is fuller and richer and is ideal for producing a Rosé style of wine. This juice was stored for two to three weeks and then pumped on top of Cabernet skins and fermented for a short time before the wine is racked out and the skins pressed. The result is a wonderful blend of fresh lively aromas from the Pinot Noir backed up by further depth from the Cabernet. As the Pinot Noir was picked early for Sparkling, it means that this wine is quite low in alcohol. Colour: Nose: Palate: Bright rose petal pink. Rosé water, musk and strawberries aromas are evident. This early drinking style of Rosé has Turkish delight and musk stick flavours. The palate has a refreshing zing that makes it ideal for the ‘Alfresco’ experience. Spikey norman Created at Eliza Estate Australia’s only specialist sparkling wine house, Spikey Norman was made from a blend of 100% Australian apples and pears. We blended apple with pears, as pears created fruit sweetness which means we could have a lower residual sugar and create a low G.I. product. Here at the house of Eliza we have used our Sparkling winemaking techniques to produce a complex cider; the use of battonage, lees stirring, old champagne oak and co-fermenting cider and perry has produced a drink of elegance and balance and blah, blah, BLAH. It doesn’t matter what is written here, take a sip its bloody good! We made this cider because we wanted to drink it. We sourced fruit from the NSW tablelands, using our sparkling winemaking knowledge and pulling all bells and whistles made a drink to wind down on after the long days during vintage. We quickly realized that we also wanted a Spikey on Friday nights,. Saturday nights and then needed a Spikey on Sunday mornings. Unsure of what we created, we then setup an in depth field trial. We targeted: BBQs and birthdays; focusing on party goers, and lawn mowers; we visited at bar mitzvahs and at Ramadan. The results came back with a unanimous; ‘It’s bloody good.’ So why are you still reading?, Eyes up! Elbows up! ‘n take a sip its bloody good! At close to 6% Spikey is a good friend when you want to take the edge off the day or take the night up a notch. Spikey contributes your serve of two in the ‘two and five’ for fruit and veg daily intake requirements so it’s basically health food. Spikey is vegan friendly, fat free, and laughs at celiacs. It mops chops and dices. But none of that matters, Take a sip its bloody good!
