STEWARDSHIP
“Takecaretoguardagainstallgreed,forthoughonemaybe
rich,one’slifedoesnotconsistofpossessions.”Luke12:15
The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern
culture where advertising continually tries to convince us
that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us
that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but
rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle.

MeritandGoodWorks
Is your real treasure here on earth, or being stored up
in heaven? Perhaps it doesn’t have to be one or the
other. Did you know that your good works, done under the in luence of God’s grace, have real value in
God’s eyes? It’s called “merit”—in its way a treasure
both on earth and in heaven. Learn more about this
core of the Church practice called “indulgences.” It’s
not a thing of the past but is a very real blessing for us
all. (CCC 1471-1473, 2006-2011) archstl.org/dynamic

UPCOMING EVENTS
FISHPOTCREEKBLUEGRASSBANDCOMESTOST.CLARE
About ive years ago Mary & Pete Pancella, both musicians, gathered together a group
of friends to start a bluegrass/gospel band. The original members were all from the
Ballwin/Ellisville area. The name of the band, Fishpot Creek, comes from the name of
the creek that actually runs from Ellisville to the Meramec River.
Their purpose was to play bluegrass and gospel music for the liturgy. The style is
simple and spirited. The lyrics carry a straightforward, unmistakable meaning. Best of
all, bluegrass music lends itself to the participation of everyone present. This, happily, is
one of the major goals of music at worship.
Many of the tunes you will hear at the 5PMMassonAugust20may be familiar to you:
SOMEBODY TOUCHED ME, LEANING ON THE EVERLASTING ARMS, DOWN IN
THE VALLEY TO PRAY.
The band has the conventional bluegrass instrumentation of iddle, guitar, string bass,
banjo and mandolin. It adds four part gospel style singing.
They have played for the Mass in several different area churches including Christ Prince
of Peace, Holy Redeemer, Holy Infant, St. John the Baptist and St. Stephen
Protomartyr. They are delighted to come to St. Clare and hope that it will provide a new
way to lift your voices in prayer.
