All parishioners are welcome to attend. Adoration of Our Lord… takes place each Wednesday in the Chapel beginning at 8:00 a.m. and the Rosary of the Luminous Mysteries will be said before the Blessed Sacrament every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel. Children are welcome to attend. 01-033 Dear Parishioners, October is the month of the Holy Rosary. The “Hail Mary” is the main prayer used throughout this meditation with the beads. Here are a few points I recently came across regarding the history of this ancient prayer. (1) The first part of the Hail Mary is a collage of biblical verses dating from the early centuries of the Church which was in use well before the tenth century. The next two centuries, the eleventh and twelfth, were a period of intense Marian devotion. The monks of that time and in particular the Cistercians dearly loved this early form of the prayer and the importance afforded it in monastic prayer life was second only to the Divine Office. It was in fact a Carthusian who “invented” the rosary, using the Hail Mary as a “monologic” prayer: a repetition of one phrase which allows us to contemplate the mysteries of Christ. The Dominicans adopted this prayer and spread and propagated it in the centuries that followed and continue to do so to this day. (2) The first part of the Hail Mary is at the same time a prayer and a Lectio Divina; a prayer of praise and of contemplation. The words are exclusively biblical with the exception of the word “Jesus” which was added later. That addition is however in perfect harmony with the scriptural text since it was the very same angel who said “and you will call him Jesus” (Lk 1:31). (3) The second part of the Hail Mary was composed towards the end of the fourteenth century. Its addition to the first part was ratified by the authority of the Church, in particular by Pope Pius V, in the sixteenth century. The tone of the second part of this prayer is more one of supplication, heavily influenced by a late medieval spirituality in which death and sin were ever-present. (4) Today, we have inherited a very balanced prayer, which in common with many others contains a scriptural introduction and a meditation on that word of God. This meditation exposes our human frailty, and our need to entrust ourselves to God’s power through the intercession of the Virgin Mary. (The Hail Mary by Cesare Falletti, O.Cist.) You are reminded the Rosary is prayed on Wednesday mornings in our Chapel at 9:00 a.m. during Adoration. Try to use this prayer form more in your life. Even if you can only say a decade, it still brings peace and consolation. Sincerely, Low Gluten Hosts are available for those unable to receive the regular hosts. Please speak with a Deacon before Mass if you are in need of these hosts. Blessing of the Child in the Womb Any mother expecting a child may with the father and other family members receive this blessing while awaiting the birth of the baby. Please contact the rectory to arrange after any weekend Mass the reception of this blessing from a Priest or Deacon. Legion of Mary Is Our Blessed Mother calling you to a deeper response to Jesus? The Benefits of Mammograms Mammography – most powerful breast cancer detection tool! • • • • Early diagnosis allows us to see tumors that are too small to be felt. The smaller the tumor when detected the more likely it is to be CURABLE and better the outcome. This test allows doctors to make diagnosis before the cancer grows and/or spreads. Thus, most patients undergo LESS invasive forms of treatment. Look for further information on the benefits of Mammograms next week! Welcoming Committee The Welcoming Committee will be meeting on Monday, October 13th at 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Center. Anyone interested in being part of this committee, please join us that evening. This weekend please consider taking a bottle to fill with your spare change and help change a life! The Legacy of Life Foundation funds the crisis pregnancy centers in Bristol and Philadelphia PA that serve over 500 families who cannot provide for simple baby supplies for their children. Many women visit the center and receive free services which give them the strength to say yes to life when baby supplies and support might have been the only reason to say no. The women’s centers are only about 30 miles from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish and also provide pro-life counseling and support for abortion-minded women so that they are able to receive the truth about their choice and live a healthy good life. A bassinet will be placed in the entrance of the church and volunteers will be available to collect bottles on their return. Any checks should be made payable to OLSH with Memo: RL Group. To find out more about this life saving work please watch a brief video at www.legacyoflifefoundation.org. Since this work is happening so close to our home parish and many of the women are coming from nearby … won’t you please join in supporting this work?
