The Ecole Centrale Marseille • What is a Grande Ecole d’Ingénieurs? that train highly selected students to occupy key positions as engineer-managers in a wide range of industries and public administrations in France and abroad. An original feature of the French system of higher education in science and technology is that there are in fact two parallel systems: the universities, and the Grandes Ecoles d’Ingénieurs The particular features of the Grandes Ecoles include: ■ highly selective admissions procedures ; ■ top-level teaching staff that includes a mix of academics, professionals from business and industry and consultants; ■ courses that are closely tailored to match the present and future requirements of industry and business in France and abroad ; ■ Company and industrial placements, and student projects commissioned by companies ; ■ a staff-student ratio that enables students’ progress to be closely monitored ; ■ a wide range of extra-curricular activities: the arts, cultural activities, voluntary work, sports and pre-professional projects (student-run Junior Companies, etc.) ; ■ a strong esprit de corps, fostered by influential alumni associations . ) ■ The Ecole Centrale Marseille is a Grande Ecole d’Ingénieurs, set up in 2003-2004 by the fusion of four engineering schools, the oldest of which was founded in the 1890s. The Ecole Centrale are among the most prestigious of the French Grandes Ecoles d’Ingénieurs, offering an M.Sc. level postgraduate degree in science, engineering and management (Diplôme d’Ingénieur). Centrale Marseille students are recruited from among the successful candidates in the Centrale-SUPELEC competitive entrance examination after a preparatory two-year undergraduate course in maths, physics and chemistry (the Classes Préparatoires). The International Relations of the Ecoles Centrale are co-ordinated by Centrale InternationalCentral Graduate School. Arriving in France If you are a student of the European Union or the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and the 27 EU Member States) you need a valid identity card. If you are a non-European Community, non EEA student: You need a valid passport/visa. If you are a non-European Community, non EEA student, you have to apply for a temporary student residence permit as soon as you arrive. The International Relations Office will give you the required documents. After handing in your application for a residence permit, the student receives a notice to attend the medical examination. At the medical examination you will be given a document on which you need to put a 55 €. OMI stamp. You need to present the medical certificate when you pick up your residence permit. Budget / Cost of living The amount officially requested by the French authorities is 460 € a month, but this amount is insufficient. Obviously, your expenses depend on your way of life. The amount varies according to the rent paid and the status of the student. The form you have to fill in can be picked up at the CROUS offices, at the International Relations Office or from the CAF website (http://www.caf.fr). There are several self-service computer rooms reserved for students with internet access. Two computer rooms are equiped for laptop computers. Centrale Marseille uses the Open Source-learning platform Claroline. International Relations- Centrale Marseille 2007 STUDENT FACILITIES • Photocopies Price of a photocopy card (on sale at the scolarité: card 150 units : 6.50 € (should be paid by cheque). • Extra-currricular activities Student life at Centrale Marseille revolves around several student clubs : The Association des Elèves de Centrale Marseille, run by the the Stu- dent Union, the BDE (Bureau des Elèves) organises a range of activities including the Freshers’ Weekend (WEI : week-end d’intégration), regular parties and the annual gala. It coordinates the activities of the various clubs other than those for sport and cultural activities. The BDE is also the main interface between the students and the school administration. The Association Sportive, run by the BDS (Bureau des sports) organises sports competitions Frontières is an NGO that works on overseas aid and development projects. The Association Artistique et Culturelle, run by the BDA (Bureau des Arts), organises activities focussed on culture and the arts. It arranges social, cultural and public service activities and events both inside the school and outside. The BDA also maintains photographic and audiovisual records of the life of the school. and the participation of the school’s sports teams in various inter-school tournaments (TIE, Challenge Centrale Lyon, Tournoi Inter Centrale, etc.). It also arranges membership for Centrale Marseille students in clubs outside the school for sports such as scuba diving, riding and badminton and organises sporting weekends (skiing, rafting, mountaineering, etc.). The Association Massilia Défi Voile organises sailing activities including Centrale Marseille’s participation in inter-school races such as the EDHEC race. Reservations are made via a form which will be sent to you by the Centrale Marseille International Relations Office. NOTE : reception at university halls of residence is from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 12.30 pm and 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.
