2012annualreport
dear
friends
While walking the halls of one of our residential houses, I came across a handwritten sign on
a counselor’s door titled Coping Skill of the Day. Underneath, it said, ‘Expect change to feel
uncomfortable.’ While in treatment at Meta House, clients learn many coping skills to help safely
manage negative emotions and remain strong on the road to recovery. Every day in group sessions,
we talk about the process of recovery and the incredible changes it brings: health, healing and hope
for a better future. However, even if the future is brighter and the changes are positive, a new way of
life means moving away from what is familiar and into the unknown. Venturing into the unknown may
be an uncomfortable and scary journey. It takes courage to overcome the uncomfortable unknown
and dedicate oneself to pursuing the wonderful rewards of a life in recovery. Meta House clients are
incredible because every day they have the courage to seek change, feel uncomfortable and fight for
a better life.
It struck me that the Coping Skill of the Day has meaning for Meta House as an agency. Over the
past year, Meta House has gone through many changes. The difficult economic and healthcare
environments have forced us to reflect, evaluate and evolve. We’ve implemented organizational
changes to increase both efficiencies and functionality of the agency, directed efforts to expand the
agency’s revenue base to compensate for the decrease in available government funding and initiated
preparations to best position the agency for the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. These
changes are new, they’re slightly uncomfortable, and they’re necessary. Just like our clients, we must
have courage to overcome the uncomfortable and be stronger and better. We are already seeing
positive outcomes develop from the changes we’ve made. Families in Milwaukee need our services
more than ever. The changes we make enable us to continue providing life-saving interventions for
families in need.
We won’t change our commitment to our mission. As we have done since 1963, Meta House is
dedicated to providing the best possible care for women and children, helping them break free of
addiction and reach for a better future. On behalf of everyone at Meta House, thank you for believing
in our ability to serve these local women and children. And thank you for your continued support.
Your support is empowering women to seek change and thrive on their road to recovery.

“I’m grateful for what I
received from Meta House.
My best coping skill is to
do what is hardest.
I wouldn’t have my
daughter if it weren’t for
Meta House, and for that
I am truly grateful.”

I became involved with the Meta House Board of Directors in 2007 because I was moved by the
work the agency does to support women aspiring to overcome their addiction and change their lives.
Through my tenure as a Member, Chair-Elect and then Chair of the Board, I’m continually inspired by
the dedication of the agency to support women fighting against the painful grips of addiction.
It has been my honor and privilege to serve as Chair of the Meta House Board of Directors this past
year. As always, the Board maintains a strong commitment to ensuring that Meta House meets and
conquers challenges, upholds a position at the forefront of women’s substance abuse treatment and
provides for the needs of women struggling with addiction.
One of the Board’s priorities in 2012 was finding a successor for Dr. Francine Feinberg. We knew her
successor needed exceptional leadership capabilities and an exemplary technical skill set to carry
the agency through changes in the healthcare environment. With her professional accomplishments,
years of service to Meta House and personal qualities, Amy Lindner emerged as the clear choice
to lead Meta House. Since Amy assumed the position of President & CEO on August 1, 2012, we’ve
directed our collective efforts to addressing the agency’s financial challenges and developing
strategic initiatives to guide Meta House into its 50th Anniversary and beyond. I believe that we have
developed a plan that will allow the agency to grow and thrive. Meta House will continue to be a
leader in the field of innovative, gender-responsive substance abuse treatment for the next 50 years.
As always, it will take hard work and dedication. Lucky for us, we have plenty of both.
Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, toured, attended our events and showed their
support to Meta House over the past year. Together we are striving for healthier lives for women and
children in our community.

As we listen to the heartbreaking stories of each
woman who comes to Meta House for treatment, we
recognize that although each woman has her own
unique experience to tell us, there are patterns which
are shared by many women suffering the effects of
addiction to alcohol or other drugs.
Upon admittance to Meta House, a woman typically:
Is living in poverty
Has a history of sexual, physical, and
emotional abuse
Lacks an education and does not have a
high school diploma

Database Management Assistant
David is an incredible asset to the Development Team. He processes in-kind
donations, enters them into the database and prepares acknowledgement
letters for donors. His efforts help ensure that our generous donors are
properly recognized.
“There are many reasons why I love volunteering. For starters, it’s just the
right thing to do. If you have the time, you should donate some of it to worthy
causes - such as Meta House. I love the great feeling volunteering brings.
I find it personally gratifying knowing that I’m helping others achieve their
goals. Milwaukee is a great city full of great people doing amazing things
each and every day. By volunteering, I feel like I’m giving back to the
community that I love.”
Carrie Zielinski
NIA Instructor
NIA blends martial arts, dance and healing arts, giving Meta House
clients an opportunity to practice mental and physical healing.
“I discovered NIA in the late ‘90s. I experienced an awakening of joy
and freedom that is difficult to put into words. As a registered nurse,
I spent over 30 years in the mental health/AODA field. I always thought
there was something missing in the recovery programs for women. As
I pursued training as a NIA instructor, it became clear that the benefits of
NIA are ideal for recovering women. My own challenges with substance
abuse and recovery motivated me to reach out to other women with the
same struggles. NIA addresses mind, body, spirit and emotion through
the joy of movement, building empowerment and confidence. I am glad
to be able to share this joy with Meta House women.”

Celebrating Families! Co-Facilitator
Celebrating Families! is a program for families affected by drug and/or
alcohol abuse. The sixteen week curriculum seeks to rebuild families
and break the cycle of addiction, through age appropriate and support group
activities. As a Co-Facilitator for the adult group, Marjorie leads discussions
and activities that provide participants with the skills, information, and
insights to foster and support healthy family and living skills.
“Volunteering in the Celebrating Families! program has been not only
rewarding, but challenging for me. Each family is unique and remarkable
in their own right. Working with them, along with the support of a very
dedicated Meta House staff, enables me to learn and grow as a volunteer.
All of this feeds my passion to serve, and motivates me to continue on
with this program.”

“On November 20, 2009, I woke up and my twomonth-old daughter did not. And that was crushing.
Three hours after she was pronounced dead at
the hospital, I was high.” Erica’s infant daughter died
from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The trauma
of her daughter’s sudden death triggered Erica to
start using heroin again. But this time she didn’t
care what happened to her and trouble with the
law ensued. Erica was arrested for theft, convicted
and sent to jail. Eventually released on probation,
Erica went into treatment knowing that without
professional help she would not succeed
at staying sober.
erica’sstory
Erica started smoking marijuana in high school
and drinking alcohol in college because she
wanted to be accepted, to fit in, and to ease
the feeling that she was unworthy of other
people’s attention or love. When her boyfriend
offered her heroin, it was just the next thing to
try. Her life quickly spiraled downhill despite
occasional stretches of sobriety. “I turned
down every offer to go to treatment, or rehab or
detox. I thought I could do it by myself.” During
that time, Erica became pregnant. While
unexpected, Erica was excited to become a
mother. After giving birth to her baby girl, Erica
fell deeply in love with her daughter. She felt
she had found her mission in life – to be a
mother. But her happiness was short-lived.
8
Erica stayed clean initially, but found herself
pregnant again. Not having fully dealt with the grief
from the loss of her daughter, she began using
drugs to bury her emotional pain. She informed
her probation officer and was put into protective
custody for the sake of her unborn child. Instead of
remaining in jail, Erica chose to try treatment again
and, this time, came to Meta House. One month
later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. “I came in
with nothing and they said, ‘That’s OK. Here’s some
shampoo. And soap.’ I was given clean sheets and
a pillow for my bed. I was given a place to hang what
little clothes I had. I like to say that while the first
treatment facility did their best and gave me a tool
belt that I could use for my recovery, Meta House
gave me an entire Home Depot of tools to use to
fight this addiction if I was only willing to go and
pick them up.”
Erica graduated from the Meta House program
in February 2013 after four months of residential
treatment and more than a year of intensive
outpatient treatment. Erica’s recovery has been
a long journey which
included understanding
the effects of postpartum
depression, bringing her
family back into her life
and learning how to heal
from the trauma of her
daughter’s death. “The
staff knew exactly what I
was going through. They
knew exactly what steps
I needed to mend my
life and mend the holes
inside me.”
blanche’sstory
Blanche is thankful
that she is now living
the life that she
dreamed of as a girl.
She always wanted
to graduate from
high school; she will
soon be graduating
from college with a
BA degree in Human
Services. She
always wanted to
have a husband; she
has been married
to Charles for 14
years. She always
wanted children;
her four children are grown and successful and
now she’s a grandmother. She wanted to drive
her own car, own a home, and give back to the
community. She has accomplished all this and
more since completing her treatment at Meta
House almost 19 years ago.
But it wasn’t a painless or easy process to
become the successful, happy person she is
today. Blanche grew up in a harsh environment
in the projects of Chicago. One of 11 children,
Blanche’s mother struggled with alcoholism
and her father died when she was 10. Almost
everyone around her dropped out of high school,
joined a gang or became a teen parent. Alcohol
and drugs were just part of the landscape, as
was jail. Even though Blanche was a late
bloomer, she eventually succumbed to the
norms around her. She dropped out of high
school in the 11th grade, had her first child at age
18, and started using alcohol and drugs to cope
with her difficulties. “I was lost, trapped, way
before I came to Meta House.”
For Blanche, it was a quick descent into a
chaotic world where violence was normal and
using drugs was more important than taking care
of the children. Eventually, she was arrested and
her children were put in foster care because she
had left them alone. Living on the streets, tired
and alone, Blanche felt trapped and robbed of
her dreams.
One day, Blanche heard a rumor about a place
called Meta House. “Girls were getting off drugs,
getting their children back, getting an education,
and getting jobs. I wanted that…the things that I had
dreamt about as a child. So I got the number and
called and talked with a counselor who told me that
they would have a bed for me in three weeks. She
told me to go to meetings, stay clean, and call her
anytime. And that’s how I got into treatment. That’s
how I started to heal. That’s how I got my children
back…my life back. Meta House released me from
the trap. They opened doors and gave me the
courage to walk through them.”
Blanche is an inspiration for all who meet her. She is
strong and powerful, funny and wise. She broke the
generational cycle of substance abuse. She is an
example of how a community of caring and generous
people can help restore the dreams of women who
have the courage to accept the many gifts that Meta
House has to offer.

“Meta House knows that if a woman is healed from her
addiction, her family is also healed, which then strengthens
the community. They exemplify what it means to be a
good neighbor. In conjunction with our Lenten theme
of ‘Transformations,’ our parishioners embraced the
opportunity to support the clients of Meta House who
themselves are dedicated to their own incredible
life saving/changing transformations.”

“The Kappa Delta national organization has strong
philanthropic interests and each chapter is encouraged
to get involved on a local level.
One reason we love Meta House is that our volunteer
experiences allow us to be involved with the clients and
children in addition to making donations of household
products and baby items and sending personal checks.
Our members represent a variety of ages and interests.
Supporting Meta House is one thing that brings all of our
members together.
The national organization provides support to local
nonprofits through KiDs Grants. We were honored to
nominate Meta House for a KiDs Grant and thrilled
when they received the award!”

mothers and children to furnish their homes and
rebuild their lives.
Make Meta House part of your estate plans or
make a deferred gift (such as bequests, trusts,
and annuities) to the agency.
Have a party or host an activity honoring Meta
House and collect in-kind donations or raise
money. This is a fun way to get together and
make a difference.
