Mission:
Meta House ends
the generational
cycle of addiction by
healing women and
strengthening
families.
dear supporters and friends:
What an incredible year it has been!
We expanded Child and Family services with our Father Engagement Program to
help increase the amount of healthy involvement of the fathers and father-figures
for our clients’ children. We added a primary care clinic, conveniently located within
our outpatient treatment building. The clinic dramatically increases access to primary
care services for our clients and minimizes the time that women are away from
treatment when seeking medical care. We also expanded services and now offer
career development and job readiness services in our new computer lab.
Perhaps most exciting, in 2014, we began work on our newest program, Shorewood
House. Using a six-bedroom property Meta House has owned for 30 years, we are once
again expanding treatment options to meet the needs of our community. Up until
recently, we offered treatment there for our traditional clientele – women who can’t
afford to pay for treatment. Unfortunately, it’s been closed since then and despite our
best efforts, we’ve not been able to find a way to re-open the facility for our traditional
population of women in a fiscally responsible way. It would have been easy to sell the
house and put a little money in the bank, but Milwaukee needs more treatment beds,
not fewer. This house was, and is, licensed for residential treatment and giving up that
license in the face of such great need felt both shortsighted and contrary to our mission.
At Shorewood House, we offer effective, comprehensive substance abuse treatment.
And even better, we are offering gender-specific treatment in a residential house at
about half the price of many private-pay programs. In July 2015, we welcomed our first
client. Shorewood House strengthens our mission by providing services to women
who may not otherwise have access to appropriate residential treatment. We built
Shorewood House not to only to pay for itself, but also to return significant net revenue
to our main campus to support the women and children who don’t have an ability to
pay for the help they need. We hope that within two years, Shorewood House will be a
reliable source of revenue that helps support the work we do every day on our Riverwest
and Housing campuses.
It has been an incredible experience taking this project from start to now, a project
that will help sustain the agency in the long term. In a time when government funding
is declining, we are really excited to diversify our funding stream and bring quality
services to our community. We thank so many of you who’ve helped us move in this
direction that’s so important – not only for Meta House – but also for the thousands
of women in our community whose futures are healthier and brighter.

meta house history
thank you!
1963 “Our Home Foundation, Inc.” began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to create a place
where women who abused alcohol could be treated instead of being sent to jail. A
home was established at 2843 W. State St. with room to help seven women recover
from alcoholism. The house originally belonged to Mrs. Meta Orth and quickly became
known among its residents as “Meta’s House.” The organization officially adopted the
“Meta House” name in 2000. Since its establishment in the early sixties, Meta House
has celebrated many remarkable accomplishments.
Gifts of $1,000-$4,999
1970 Meta House moves to two homes and gains space for 11 clients.
1985 Meta House purchases the duplex that will eventually become Shorewood House.
1988 Meta House purchases the former St. Casimir convent, adding 30 beds to
Meta House’s program – establishing one of the first residential treatment facilities
nationwide for women and their children.
1997 Meta House acquires the rectory next door to the convent and once again
expands capacity.
1998 Meta House creates outpatient treatment program.
1999 The Transitional Housing program is established to provide women in recovery a
safe and affordable place to live.
2000-2003 Meta House constructs three additional HUD-funded (Housing and Urban
Development) apartments for women in long-term recovery.
2003 Meta House doubles its outpatient capacity.
2004 Meta House expands pregnant and postpartum services.
2005 Meta House earns recognition from President Bush.
2009 Meta House moves its outpatient and administrative building – creating a
campus-like setting.
2010 Meta House establishes a partnership with the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare
and Milwaukee County Children’s Court.
2012 Meta House becomes the first non-hospital substance abuse treatment facility
in Milwaukee to have a smoke-free campus. Executive Director Dr. Francine Feinberg
retires after 29 years.
2013 Meta House celebrates 50 years.
2014 Meta House starts
renovation of the duplex
that will become
Shorewood House.

In 2014, Meta House expanded its Workforce Development Program to meet the
challenges presented by a significant change in the GED exam and the technical
skills increasingly needed for the job search. The programmatic evolution, made
possible by Bader Philanthropies, Inc., increased Meta House’s capacity to help clients
overcome barriers to employment and pursue their educational and vocational goals
to become self-sufficient.
The fully-implemented program offers a Literacy Center and Computer Lab in the
outpatient facility and is supported by two staff members: the Literacy Services
Coordinator and the Career Specialist. Services are delivered in one-on-one and
group settings to match the needs, abilities and goals of each client.
Our Literacy Services Coordinator helps women assess their abilities and needs.
She provides basic literacy support and training in computer literacy, typing and
word processing. She assists in GED and college entry test preparation.
“The overall goal is to help women gain an awareness of their abilities and set goals.
It’s so inspiring to watch women begin to believe in themselves as they learn how to
help their kids do homework and gain confidence in their ability to work toward a GED.
Everyday successes truly bolster a woman’s chances for long-term recovery.”
LaShawn Hill, Literacy Services Coordinator
Our Career Specialist conducts job readiness assessments and provides training
and support in job searches, resume and cover letter development, professional
dress, interviewing and job retention. She helps women find volunteer opportunities
and explores apprenticeship and certification opportunities. The Career Specialist
cultivates relationships with local businesses, with the goal of making employment
referrals. She takes women to career fairs and other employment readiness events.
“We’ve made some great partnerships with local employers. We have many women
finding jobs and keeping jobs – they are feeling empowered in the business world.
Women come in dead-scared and after working with us for a while, they leave with
confidence in their skills and what their paperwork should look like – you see a big
difference.” Dawn Baldwin, Career Specialist
Special thanks to all program supporters, including Bader Philanthropies, the
Manpower Group Foundation and Wells Fargo, for believing in the power of education
and employment.

“I was raised to volunteer, at church, nursing
homes, anywhere that needed help. It is an intrinsic
part of me, to help improve the quality of life for
someone. Volunteering at Meta House has been a
great experience. It has given me the opportunity to
learn about myself and to learn about those in our
community and to build new relationships. Overall,
volunteering and helping others causes happiness.”
Dee McGarity
“I really admire the women trying to turn their lives
around, especially for the benefit of their children.
The discipline required to go through the Meta
House program is not easy, and it requires real
commitment and determination. It is a privilege
to be part of that process and hopefully bring
something pretty to women who truly deserve it!”
Linda Catterson
“Bringing much-needed, relaxing activities to the
women is the main reason I volunteer at Meta
House. Once a month I come to the Friday Fun
Group with an assortment of beads for the women
to make bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Usually
they end up making something special for their
children or a family member. This group allows the
women to make something that they might not
be able to afford in a different setting. I’ve also
offered energy work such as Reiki to the residents
of Transitional Housing. It’s wonderful to see people
relax, and forget their physical pains for a while.
Everyone is so grateful you take the time to help
them feel better!”
“One of my favorite things
about Meta House is their
commitment to meeting people
where they’re at, instead of
where we think they should be.”

Sharon’s story
Sharon woke up Christmas morning to her lowest point – her husband with whom she had
recently separated had been threatening to take their daughter due to her drinking and she
was tired of dealing with the divorce. She was drunk the whole day – she didn’t even get out
of bed. Her daughter was alone and left to go a friend’s house, a safe place. Sharon recalls
not caring about anything, including whether she lived or died. Fortunately, her family
found help and that help was Meta House.
Sharon grew up in a small-town, North Carolina community. As an only child on
a 20-acre property, she learned to be very comfortable with isolation. She felt
pressure to excel at everything – school, Girl Scouts, sports, music – she always
felt like she had to be perfect. She met the boy she’d marry in 9th grade. Much of
their relationship was focused on his career even, from the time they were in high
school planning to build a lab in the backyard. After high school, they parted ways
for college, but remained committed to their relationship. She majored in History
and minored in Business and German and found her liberal arts degree to be
helpful in getting a job wherever they moved. They married in Atlanta, Georgia when
she was 24. From there, they moved to Austin, Texas and later Santa Fe, where their
daughter was born and a few years later, they moved to a Milwaukee suburb. She was a
stay-at-home mom until their daughter went to kindergarten. She was a Girl Scout leader
for her daughter’s troop and an assistant softball coach for her daughter’s team. She finally
began to establish relationships and grow roots in a way she hadn’t before. However, the
stability she felt would soon be rocked when she found out her husband, a college professor,
would not be tenured at his university, leaving their roots in Milwaukee vulnerable.
She tried desperately to control the situation, but the more she tried, the less control she
had. It was about this time when alcohol became a more regular part of her life. Sharon
recalls, “I’d always been a drinker, since my teen years. I partied in college and always
continued to drink – but I was able to function. I used to drink socially, but then I started to
drink every day to relax at night and then it got to be drinking all the time.”
Sharon also began to notice a ‘chatter’ in her head, which the alcohol helped quiet. Sharon
felt like her drinking wasn’t hurting anyone because she would just sit on the couch and
drink, but she didn’t realize at the time that she was emotionally disconnected, quick to
anger and the people around her were always worried about her. When her husband was
offered a position in Georgia, she found herself compelled to stay in Milwaukee. She and
their daughter were settled in a place they jointly felt was home. Her husband moved to
Georgia on his own and despite initially trying to make it work, they soon started the process
of divorce. While they had already started to emotionally drift apart, much because of her
drinking, the stress of their separation took its toll on her.
Her dad came to town to help and he and a close friend coordinated her admission to a
detoxification facility and from there she was referred to Meta House.
Sharon says she “got lucky,” she chose Meta House because of its convenient location,
but found the holistic services offered there to be the difference in her recovery. She’s
been to different outpatient programs that taught her coping skills – but she says Meta
House taught her she was worthy of recovery – Meta House made her want to use coping
skills. Meta House taught her about herself. She’s finally learning who she is, she’s learned
“it is okay to cry, to feel, that [she’s] worthy of sobriety and love.”
The Dual Recovery group at Meta House helped Sharon recognize that
the ‘chatter’ she was experiencing wasn’t right and encouraged her
to seek help. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with Bipolar
Disorder. This diagnosis has deepened her understanding
of herself and the role alcohol has played in her life.
Sharon recently graduated from treatment. She and
her daughter remain in the Milwaukee area, where her
daughter is doing well in school and Sharon works full
time. Sharon enjoys playing soccer and spending time
with her daughter.

how to get involved
“Life before Meta House was
horrible. I was lost, hungry,
homeless, and pregnant with a
desire to get clean and stay clean.
Now, I’m a responsible, loving
mom and an independent,
hard-working young lady.”
- Shelonda, Meta House graduate
Donate
Make a financial gift or pledge that allows Meta House
to continue essential work in the Milwaukee community.
Donate materials or in-kind gifts needed by our mothers and children to
furnish their homes and rebuild their lives.
Make Meta House part of your estate plans or make a deferred gift (such as
bequests, trusts and annuities) to the agency.
Contribute
Organize a donation drive at your place of worship or office to collect items
for Meta House’s wish list. These drives allow us to provide essential items to
women and children in all of our programs.
Have a party or host an activity honoring Meta House and collect in-kind
donations or raise money. This is a fun way to get together and make
a difference.
